A Day in Cartagena Romans, Dining, Geocaching and Diving (of course!) by Debbie Jenkins Cartagena is a medium-sized town on the south-east coast of Spain, dominated by an industrial port and an illustrious naval history: the inventor of the submarine was from Cartagena, as commemorated by the huge grey prototype submarine from 1888 that squats down by the leisure port. The largest submarine in the world is also being built here, under wraps so nothing to see unfortunately. Being the second largest city in the region of Murcia you would think Cartagena would still have the big metropolitan feel of Murcia, but it's a refreshingly wide open and low slung place with a beautiful and busy port area. We had ice cream at the leisure port, overlooking the natural harbour formed by the mountains, which is full of bars and restaurants (which serve as cafes by day and clubs by night). We also visited the city's air raid shelter (it was a key strategic town during Spain's civil war) and museum, which was fascinating. If you have a car you'll be able to drive to many fortresses, castles, fortifications and battlements, ranging from Roman

construction through to abandoned 20th century projects. Cartagena's military importance is charted by numerous installations including huge guns on the hilltops, submarine tunnels straight out of a James Bond film set and 16th century pirate look out towers. Cartagena has a long history of Roman occupation and battles. The reason the Romans wanted Cartagena was because they were amazed at how quickly Carthage, its north African rival, managed to pay off punitive damages imposed by Rome after the First Punic War. There was enormous mineral wealth in the hills surrounding the natural harbour which the Carthaginians discovered and swiftly colonised it (hence its name, from the Latin for New Carthage). The remnants of the mining works can be seen all around (and under the water!) The Roman ampitheatre has been finished and opened. Teatro Romano slap bang in the middle of town is now open for visitors and will be staging events in the not too distant future. (continued on page 4)

A Day in Cartagena We also visited Cartagena earlier on in the year with our nephews and placed a multi-part geocache. If you're not sure about geocaching take a look here: http://www.nativespain.com/geocachingwhat-do-when-it-s-too-cold-go-beach for some more information. This geocache is an excellent way to get to know the city and see some of the highlights. If you want to have a look at this cache, go to www.geocaching.com and search for "fuertenavidad" from user "marcusj" - I promise you it will be a fun day out with your family. As you'll have noticed by now, if we're visiting a place near the sea, we'll probably be diving there! And Cartagena was no different. We dived with a lovely club called Estrella Sub www.estrellasub.com based in the working harbour in Santa Lucia. Our first dive included two sunken boats and a Harrier Jump Jet fuselage. We also dived around the Island of Escombreras and have more dives coming up! They speak English, are easy to reach and during the summer one of the better dive clubs as they're away from the tourist areas!

And of course no trip is complete without some food. Now I hesitate to tell you about Techo Bajos because some restaurants I like to keep to myself! But I would feel bad if I didn't let you in on the best restaurant in Cartagena. It's rough and ready, with fast turnover and quick food. The prices are great, the menu del dĂa is super value, the ambience is fun, and all our Spanish neighbours in La Murta highly recommend it! One word of warning - it's a fish restaurant - they sell fish, shellfish and more fish! Go on a weekday and get the menu del dĂa you won't regret it. Techos Bajos - Paseo del muelle s/n - 968 505 020 - it's out of the city in the small town of Santa Lucia. Skincare Tips That'll Make You Glow by Jes Witham

If you want to look great, then having great skin is a necessity. Diet and exercise play an important role when it comes to taking steps to improve the health of your skin beyond simply using good skin care products. Not only will it make you feel good about yourself, but the following steps also have many ancillary benefits when it comes to your health and happiness. Dry Brush Exfoliation: This should be done in the morning prior to going in the shower. This gets ride of excess dead skin, thus allowing your skin to detox. This will also help with blood circulation and decreases any puffiness. While this is a great way to improve your skin condition it also provides a calming affect through the gentle pressure, which stimulates the nervous system. With the help of a bristle brush you can be on your way to a dry brush exfoliation once a day in no time. Hydration: This causes your digestion to slow down and in turn leaves your body filled with impurities for longer than it should. You should try to drink 4 litres of water per day, at least. In order to make sure you meet this target have a bottle of water with you at all times throughout the day and you will find it's easy to get through this amount without thinking about it. Don't like drinking plain water? Consider adding flavoring to your water. Fibre: Fibre will improve your diet and your skin at the same time. Most people know that this will make their skin glow, but few know how to realistically eat

their RDA of fibre every day. Here's some tips to make sure you manage: 1. Brown is better than white. Pasta and bread both have up to ten times as much fibre in them when you opt for brown rather than white. This is an easy dietary change for most people, so at least give it a try and see if you can make the shift. 2. Eat apples, and lots of them! Apples are sweet and tasty. More importantly their skins are jam packed with fibre. Try to eat a couple of apples a day as a contribution towards your 5 fruit and vegetables. Get exercise: If you fail to get exercise then you'll notice your muscle tone turning to flab. This has been said to lead to cellulite, acne and bloating. None of which will do your complexion any favours! That's why you have to consider incorporating an exercise plan into your lifestyle. This shouldn't be a chore, and is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Sugar: Sugar may be sweet, but it doesn't do your skin any favours. This is said to be one of the major causes of ageing in the skin. You can easily tackle this problem through ensuring your not having any more sugar in your diet than you have to. This means that a sprinkle of sugar on your cereal shouldn't be an option. When it comes to tea and coffee, it's easy to gradually reduce whether or not you take sugar. If you currently take 2 spoonfuls, come down to zero half a spoonful at a time.

Kite Landboarding The Latest Extreme Sport for Extreme Skateboarders Those who are into skateboarding tend to be thrill seekers. They are fun, adrenaline-loving, and ahead of the curve. They are always open to something new and exciting to try out. If this sounds like you or someone you know, then you'll definitely want to learn more about kitelandboarding! Kite landboarding is a sport, originally designed by skaters, that takes the skateboarding to an entirely new level. The Board The board used in kite landboarding looks a lot like a regular skateboard deck, but with fat all-terrain wheels that can handle fast speeds on different types of surfaces. In kite landboarding, the kite actually picks the rider up off of the ground using the power of the wind. These wheels and the special bearings of the kite landboard are designed to absorb the impact when the board touches down on the surface again. The board also has bindings similar to snowboard bindings that keep the rider's feet on the board while in the air. The Kite The special type of kite used in kite landboarding is long and rectangular and designed to catch the wind and give the rider maximum control over speed and direction. Kites with pre-stretched bridle lines provide optimal performance in higher winds. These kite landboarding kites also come with handles, a kite killer safety device, and a metal ground stake that keeps the kite from flying away when not in use. How Kite Landboarding Works The sport of kite landboarding is a lot like kite surfing - only you don't need an ocean or a lake to have fun! All you need is some wind and an open terrain to be off and flying. Unlike skateboarding where the rider is powering the board,

the wind and the kite do all of the work. As the wind catches the kite, which is held by the rider using specially designed handles, the board literally takes off. Jumps and hills that give regular skateboard riders the ability to catch only a little bit of air send the kitepowered landboarding rider flying and soaring above the ground for an exhilarating ride. Boards: Speed Seekers, and Freestyle Boards As with skateboarding and surfing, the length of the kite landboard you choose will make a difference on the type of actions you can do. Longer boards are great for those who are new to kite landboarding because they offer more control and balance. If you're into fast speeds and long rides, a longer board is best because it offers more stability. Longer boards also tend to be a better fit for taller or heavier riders. Shorter kite landboards are more agile and allow riders to do lots of tricks and catch serious air. The smaller board provides optimal maneuverability and is extremely responsive to the rider's movements. These smaller boards are usually better for those who have some experience with kite landboarding. Whether you're a skater looking for a new challenge, or you have a skater or ex-skater in your life that you want to surprise with something cool and unusual, a kite-powered landboard is sure to be an ideal fit. No matter where you are in the world, if you've got open terrain, some wind, and a sense of adventure, you can have a blast with kite landboarding!

Driving In Spain By David Hudson of Torrevieja’s classic and specialist car club

WHAT YOU LEGALLY NEED TO CARRY IN YOUR CAR Inspeccion Tecnica de Vehiculo document z Permiso de Circulacion (proof of ownership) z Current insurance receipt (this is proof of payment) z Current car tax receipt (Impuesto de Circulacion) z Residencia or passport z Driving licence z ITV sticker on the windscreen, if tested z 2 triangles z Set of light bulbs for the car z Fluorecent jacket for driver - and passengers if they have to leave the car whilst on the carriageway z Parte Eureopeo de Accidente it can be in your language and is used when you have an accident. Do not sign yours or the other parties if you do not agree with what is written as it will be difficult to get it changed after. The police cannot make you sign this if you do not agree with anything. z If you normally drive wearing glasses you need to carry a spare pair z

You do not have to have your insurance policy in the car but it helps. The Inspeccion Tecnica de Vehiculo, Permiso de Circulacion, Residencia or Passport and driving licence are difficult to replace if lost or stolen. It is recommended that these documents are substituted for a copia compulsada from the Notary which will be accepted as the same as the original documents. Most Car Hire companies do this as their cars tend to get stolen and it is easy for copies to be made, with the original kept in a safe place.

If someone else drives your car it is advisable that they carry a letter from you saying that they have permission to do so. If that person is on the Insurance policy as a named driver and providing you carry those details, then a letter is not necessary. This is the same as in Britain and the same chance of being checked applies, but this is not your country and your Spanish may not be up to standard explaining it, therefore why not give a letter?

Finally, depending on your Insurance, you may have a limited distance for breakdown. If this happens and the Grua says they cannot pick the car up, ask your insurance to pay up to the limit and then ask them to negotiate with the Grua the difference which you will pay for. I have done this twice without any problems. CONTACT 96 571 6360 or davidclubtorre@terra.es Copyright David Hudson

Out & about around the Mar Menor Diving in Hormigas Islands Hormigas Islands are some rocky capes that appear at sea level, close to Cabo de Palos. The extraordinary beauty and preservation of the seabed have obtained the distinction as an Integrated Marine Reserve and the acknowledgement on behalf of the regular divers as “one of the best places in the Peninsula to practice." Description of the route: there are some boat trips from the diving schools all year long. The first stop is Bajo de Enmedio, where the rocky capes appear four metres beneath the surface. There you can see perches, meagres, congers, barracudas, morays and octopuses, swimming along with some common species in Cabo de Palos: great schools of wrasses and damselfish.

Difficulty: to dive in these areas you must have some experience. Another more simple - although equally interesting - option is to explore several coves near the cape: Cala FrĂa, Cala Correos..., which are also included in Palos Cape- Hormigas Islands Marine Reserve. Forbidden: the beds nearest to the islands have been declared Integrated Reserves, so diving there is absolutely forbidden, although you can do it in other areas of the marine reserve. information courtesy of marmenor.net

The bottom is rocky, covered in algae and marine flora. In Bajo de Fuera, passing the lighthouse island, you will see again the same flora and fauna with the added interest of the remains you will find from the shipwrecks at depths of 30m. Las Hormigas, and especially Bajo, were one of the danger points for navigation in the Mediterranean for centuries. It was so shallow (about 3 metres in depth) that it managed to finish off hundreds of ships that unsuccessfully tried to pass Palos.

TIME FOR A BREAK sudoku

The aim of the sudoku puzzle is to insert numbers in the boxes so that: each row, column and 3x3 box contain one each of the digits 1 through 9.

Codebreaker A Codebreaker is a crossword puzzle with no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. When these letters have been entered throughout the puzzle, you should have enough information to start guessing words and discovering other letters.

A Chef’s Eye View Hi my name is Andy Taylor and I am Chef/Proprietor at Dia y Noche Restaurant, La Manga. Over the next few months I will be sharing some tips and secrets with you and also giving you an insight into the life of a restraunter, “warts an all”.

Welcome to this months "Chefs Eye View", each month we are going to be looking at different recipes and ways to make cooking just a little more interesting. This time we are going to have a look at Chicken, now I don’t know about you but I find chicken in Spain seems to taste so much sweeter than the ones we get in the UK, the only thing I can possibly put this down to is the feed, in the UK its all dried pellets, whereas in Spain it seems the old traditional way is still used, ie food scraps, anyway here is a great recipe for you to try at home.

Chicken & Parsley Casserole

This will serve 4 people, delicious when served with new potatoes. Ingredients: 4 medium sized chicken pieces (washed and dried) 75g/3oz of butter 100g/4oz of bacon 2 large onions 1 pint/600ml of milk 1 bay leaf 1 teaspoon of mixed herbs 1 Chicken Stock Cube Salt/Pepper to taste 100g/4oz sliced mushrooms 2 level tablespoons of finely chopped parsley Turn oven on, 160°C/325°F (that’s gas mark 5) Fry the chicken in 50g/2oz of butter until it is golden on both sides, transferring to a large casserole dish when finished. Chop the bacon and onions and fry them (in olive oil or butter) until they are golden brown. Sprinkle the bacon onion mixture over the chicken.

Melt the remaining 1oz of butter in the frying pan (moderate heat) and stir in the flour. Cook without browning for 2 minutes Gradually blend in the milk Add the bay leaf, herbs and crumbled stock cube Continue cooking until the sauce comes to the boil and thickens. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the sauce over the chicken. Cover the Casserole dish with its lid (or aluminium foil if there isn’t a lid) Hopefully the oven will be preheated by now, put the casserole dish into the oven and cook for 1 hour. After one hour add the mushrooms to the casserole, put back into the oven (covered) for another 30 minutes. Before serving, sprinkle with the chopped parsley If you have any questions regarding recipes or cooking techniques drop me an email, andy@diaynoche.co.uk and I will do my best to answer them, in the meantime here’s a little chicken humour for you. A waiter approached the man studying the menu carefully at the fancy restaurant. "May I take your order, sir?" he asked. "Well, I was wondering how you prepare your chickens." The man replied. "Oh, it's nothing too special, sir," the waiter confided. "We just tell them straight out that they're going to die." See you next time folks, happy cooking Andy Taylor

the Mar Menor FOCUS

There are a huge number of different birds to be seen on and around the Mar Menor. From September onwards migratory birds start to return to the area from their summer excursions in Northern Europe. Keep your eyes open and you should be able to spot the different birds I write about in each edition. This time I will look at the two largest birds to be found on the Mar Menor, the Grey Heron and the Flamingo. Flamingos are incredibly easy to spot (I'm sure you've all seen them). They stand in groups (colonies) in open, shallow, salty water. Their unusual pink colour comes from the food they eat which contains carotene (also found in carrots). Young flamingo are grey in colour and take 3-4 years to become pink. The Flamingos we see on the Mar Menor are not as bright in colour as those seen in some other parts of the world. This is due to the fact that there food source does not contain as much carotene. They feed on brine shrimp, algae, insects, crustaceans and small fish. They feed by drawing tiny animals out of water and mud, by filtering the water through their bill. Most are seen on the salt lakes at San Pedro but they may also be seen on the salt lakes at Playa Paraiso. Grey Heron although large are much harder to spot. They stand very still at the edge of the water usually surrounded by reeds waiting to catch their food. They tend to be alone to avoid competition while feeding. When prey is spotted they will stab or catch it with their strong pointed bills. They are most active at dawn and dusk. They feed on fish, insects, amphibians, small rodents and birds. Herons tend to feed alone but nest in colonies in the reed beds around the Mar Menor. They make their nests out of branches and sticks. Grey Heron are native to southern Spain and may be seen in the Mar Menor throughout the year. Flamingos on the other hand are migratory and most only spend the winter on the Mar Menor. They normally arrive in September and leave again in Spring to travel to the lakes where they breed. Lesley Singleton, Aqua Adicta

Going Native in Catalonia

by Simon Harris

Pick up any guidebook to Spain and chances are it focuses on the same old landmarks, beaches, food and attractions. That's all well and good if you're only staying for a week or so but what about the growing breed of longer term travellers - also known as 'vagabonds' - who take extended time out to really become one with their new home? With longer-term visitors and new natives in mind the latest book from NativeSpain.com sets out to inform and enlighten readers on the finer points of living in Catalonia: from the history, mindset, stereotypes, humour and loves of the people to their food, quirks and 'non-standard' routines. "Going Native in Catalonia" comes 2 years after the first book in the series, "Going Native in Murcia" and again is written by an outsider, who over the years, has made the region his home. In Simon Harris's case, "Going Native in Catalonia" draws on his 30+ years' experience as his 'short-term' stay led him to marry a Catalan woman, appear on TV as a musician, become a father and eventually become a University lecturer. Simon says, "You may already know that Barcelona is in Catalonia and that the natives 'speak different' compared to the rest of Spain. But beyond that - unless you'd spent a lot of time there - you'd be forgiven for thinking that the people, architecture, customs and way of life in Catalonia are just like any other in Spain but they're not."

Things you'll discover in the book include: z why Catalonia is not just another part of Spain z the quirks of the Catalan people and language z a brief history of Catalonia and its politics z intimate guided tours of key towns and cities z advice for short, long and medium term stays z personal photographs from the author's travels z Catalan culture, art, style and partying z witty anecdotes and interesting facts to share z the inside scoop on Catalonia's culinary delights z tips on 'going native' yourself and making a home here Debbie Jenkins, Simon's publisher and author of "Going Native in Murcia", says, "Our 'Going Native' guides are written with a rare type of traveller in mind... longer term visitors who want to become a true part of their new home. Whether their stay is a month or a lifetime we aim to give them everything the tourist guides won't." "Going Native in Catalonia" by Simon Harris ISBN-1905430302 - is available to buy from Amazon and all good bookshops now. "Going Native in Alicante" and "Going Native in Tenerife" will also go to print later in 2008.

He continues, "What I've found, living amongst my Catalan neighbours for over three decades, is a place and a people unlike any other on earth. They party harder than anyone and have a unique pride in fair play and hard work. I love it here and I want to help other outsiders thinking of living here to really understand the real Catalan culture too!" Debbie Jenkins is co-a author of "Going Native in Murcia" and author of "Buying Property in Murcia". Find out more at www.nativespain.com

Focus on Spain Get to Know the Different Types of Spanish Music by Gerd Pacher

Spanish music has become increasingly popular due to the hit-makers of pop superstars Shakira and J-Lo. Did you know that there are many different types of Spanish music? Every Spanish-speaking country has its own version of what Spanish music is, and it differs greatly from culture to culture.

Spanish pop music is a meld of many regions that is produced to appeal to the masses. Pop music is usually more about the singers than the songs themselves. Latin jazz does not have a backbeat which makes it sound completely different from American jazz music. The rhythm is straight and not like the swing sound found in American jazz. Latin jazz combines African rhythms with conga drums giving it a Caribbean flavor Bossa nova music originated in the country of Brazil. Unlike other types of Spanish music, bossa nova does not use percussion instruments. Instead, bossa nova is infused with guitar and piano instruments to give it a gentle rhythm.

Salsa is a type of Spanish music that is featured prominently in Cuban and Puerto Rican communities. Salsa is a fast moving style of dance that is popular in all of the clubs these days. It is popular because the dance moves do not require a lot of space, so more people can be squeezed in to enjoy this music on a dance floor. Salsa music is a combination of African rhythms with Spanish beats. Tango music and dance is known for its dramatic flair. You probably already have a picture in your head of a woman dancing with a rose held in her teeth! The music is fairly classical featuring violins, double bass and a piano, but it can also have the accompaniment of flutes and clarinets.

Tejano music is often characterized as a Spanish polka, if you can imagine that sort of comparison. Tejano music roots are from Mexico and traditionally feature an accordion, but synthes i z e r s have been used more recently to update this classic style of . Spanish music.

The F un Spot Talking Dog For Sale This guy sees a sign in front of a house: "Talking Dog for Sale." He rings the bell and the owner tells him the dog is in the back yard. The guy goes into the back yard and sees a mutt sitting there. "You talk?" he asks. "Yep," the mutt replies. "So, what's your story?" The mutt looks up and says "Well, I discovered this gift pretty young and I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA about my gift, and in no time they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, 'cause no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies eight years running. The jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger and I wanted to settle down. So I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security work, mostly wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings there and was awarded a batch of medals. Had a wife, a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired." The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.

The owner says "Ten dollars." The guy says he'll buy him but asks the owner, "This dog is amazing. Why on earth are you selling him?" The owner replies, "He tells such incredible lies!" Never Heard That Excuse A fellow bought a new Corvette and was out for a nice evening drive. The top was down, the breeze was blowing through what was left of his hair, and he decided to open her up. As the needle jumped up to 80 mph he suddenly saw a flashing red and blue light behind him. "There ain't no way they can catch a Corvette," he thought to himself and opened her up further. The needle hit 90, 100, 130 and finally 150 with the light still behind him. "What the hell am I doing?" he finally thought and pulled over. The cop came up to him, took his license without a word, and examined it and the car. "I've had a tough shift and this is my last pull over. I don't particularly feel like doing more paperwork, so if you can give me an excuse for your driving that I haven't heard before, you can go." "Last week my wife ran off with a cop," the man said, "and I was afraid you were trying to give her back." "Off you go," said the officer.
