The Monastery of San Ginés de la Jara Standing beside the busy MU312, the main access to the La Manga area, is the old Monastery of San Ginés De La Jara. The road passes between the monastery and the hill known as Monte Mira, or Monte Sacro - the sacred mountain. One noticeable feature of the site from the road is the many beautiful palm trees, some of them very tall and of great age, that were a key part of the quiet monastery gardens. Thousands of visitors to the beaches and resorts of the area drive by this group of once attractive old buildings each year without any idea that they are passing one of Spain’s most historic places. Saint Ginés de la Jara is a semi-legendary saint of Spain. He is associated with the region surrounding Cartagena, of which he is co-patron. A hermitage was founded adjacent to the Mar Menor, and ruins of the monastery bearing his name date from before the Moorish conquest of 711 AD Like many Christian developments in the Murcia region, the monastery is said to have been situated on the site of an Arab hermitage. Over almost a thousand years the place became famous for the many miracles that occurred there and devotees came from far and wide. A Royal decree recognised the holy nature of the place and the monastery was developed first by the Dominicans and then by the Franciscans. He was considered to be the protector of agricultural labourers and of the fields.

Sailors also invoked his aid against storms. In 1541, Pope Paul III officially canonized him. His feast day is August 25th, a day for special celebrations in San Ginés De La Jara. Angels were said to be frequent visitors to San Ginés and even helped a holy man erect his home. The fame of the church and monastery grew steadily and noble people as well as local people and travellers constantly came to the monastery in search of cures, favours or divine aid. Legend has it that after Ginés was decapitated in southern France, he picked up his head and threw it into the Rhóne. The head was carried by sea to the coast of Murcia, where it was venerated as a relic. In modern times, however, the tide of faith receded and the ancient monastery was no longer used for regular worship, The complex has been abandoned for many years and the extensive buildings allowed to fall into a state of disrepair, though much has been said recently about restoration. Around 1692, La Roldana made a polychromed sculpture of Ginés de la Jara (now at the Getty Center). Front Cover: The Old Monastery

IV Concentración Automóviles Clásicos Mar Menor Classic Cars - Lo Pagan - Sunday November 9th Those that appreciate the finer things of yesteryear shall want to make their way down to Lo Pagan on Sunday November 9th where you'll be able to witness one of the largest Classic Car displays in the region for yourself. It's the IV Concentración Automóviles Clásicos Mar Menor organised by the Club A.C.M.M. along with support and sponsorship from the Ayuntamiento de San Pedro del Pinatar.

If you are thinking of joining the classic car community in Spain you'll also have the opportunity to purchase a raffle ticket to give you the chance to win a beautiful 1975 Mercedes 450 SEL. Now this isn't a car for the faint hearted but back in 1975 this was the top of the line executive Merc which packs a 6.9 litre engine. It's probably not the sort of car you'd be likely to drive around town every day but you'll certainly turn a few heads if you do. For those looking for a classic, you should check out www.ClubTorrevieja.com as they have a number of member's cars for sale plus, it's also where you'll find some more information about the event closer to November 9th. Keith Nicol - www.CostaBlancaTV.com

If last year's event is anything to go by, you'll be transported (no pun intended) back to a bygone era when such words as carburetors, chokes, crossplys and roof racks were everyday terms. The Car Clubs should be arriving from about 9.00 am and included in their ranks will be a couple of dozen classics from Torrevieja's original International classic car club, Club Torrevieja. On display I'd expect to see such wonderful marques as the ubiquitous Mini, American classics (especially from the 70's), 2CV's, Rolls Royce, MGB, Austin Healy, VW Beatle and more than one or two Seat 600's, Spain's iconic 'people car'. As we go to press, final details of the event had not been released but I expect the first cars to be arriving for the 'breakfast' between 9.00 and 10.00 am with all of the assembled cars setting off on a 'cruise' around the area around noon.

La Manga Branch with the re-opening of their regular venue

BINGO IS BACK at Julian’s Bar Playa Honda every Monday Night (now also at Paddywacks on Friday night)

A Day Out In Águilas & Diving With Dolphins by Debbie Jenkins We've been to the port town of Águilas (you pronounce it with the stress on the very first A) a couple of times over the last few years and we've always had a wonderful time. Our most recent visits included a spot of diving, some really great food and seeing a dolphin. I'll tell you more.

We had a week off work and thought a couple of days diving would be fun. We chose http://www.buceoaguilas.com right on the harbour, next to the train monument. Diving around the Cabo Cope area you'll find wooden fishing boats sunk to provide an artificial reef, in conditions that are usually calm and clear with good visibility. You'll see damsel fish, grouper and many moray eels, in fact huge moray eels, probably bigger than me! We also saw barracudas nipping about in the gloom.

The Arroz a banda is more known as a Valencian dish and is rice with fish (and stuff), and again was yummy, but a little too much for us to finish. On our final day of diving, on the boat on the way back to the port, we saw a dolphin. Our dive master said that only a few years ago he would routinely see 6 or 8 dolphins on every trip, but this is the first he's seen this year. I think that dolphins are like stars, the first to spot one gets to name it. I name that dolphin Flipper. Unique, original, apt, inspired! If you see flipper tell him I said hello!

TIME FOR A BREAK sudoku

The aim of the sudoku puzzle is to insert numbers in the boxes so that: each row, column and 3x3 box contain one each of the digits 1 through 9.

Codebreaker A Codebreaker is a crossword puzzle with no clues! Instead, every letter of the alphabet has been replaced by a number, the same number representing the same letter throughout the puzzle. All you have to do is decide which letter is represented by which number! To start you off, we reveal the codes for two or three letters. When these letters have been entered throughout the puzzle, you should have enough information to start guessing words and discovering other letters.

A Chef’s Eye View Hi my name is Andy Taylor and I am Chef/Proprietor at Dia y Noche Restaurant, La Manga. Over the next few months I will be sharing some tips and secrets with you and also giving you an insight into the life of a restraunter, “warts an all. Well...here we are, November already and some of us feeling a slight chill in the air and what with all the rain we have had over the past few weeks it's been a bit gloomy. So what better way to cheer ourselves up? "Comfort Food"......we all love it! Be it a great big stew and dumplings, cottage pie, bangers and mash with onion gravy to name but a few. I'm getting hungry even thinking about it, but if you think about it comfort food is always traditional like "Grannies Home-Made Apple Pie" passed down through the years, real wholesome homemade food. So with that in mind here's a recipe to get you started; Ingredients 2 tsp vegetable oil 1 onion , chopped 800g potatoes , peeled and cut into small chunks 1litre vegetable stock 350g frozen peas handful mint, chopped Method Heat the oil in a large saucepan, then fry the onion for 5 mins until softened. Add the potatoes and stock, then bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for 10-15 mins until tender, adding the peas 2 mins before the end of the cooking time. Use a slotted spoon to remove a quarter of the vegetables from the pan and set aside. Blend the remaining vegetables and stock in a food processor or using a hand blender until smooth, then stir through the reserved veg, chopped mint and some seasoning. Serve with bread on the side. Tip: Some supermarkets sell frozen peas with mint, a great freezer standby if you can't get hold of any fresh herbs.

Thats it for this time, as always, if you have any questions regarding recipes or cooking techniques please feel free to email me at andy@diaynoche.co.uk and I will do my best to help. For those of you who prefer to disrupt my restaurant service by queuing at the Carvery unit on a Sunday evening to pick my brains, myself and the 100 people in the queue behind you thank you, please use the email facility, its quicker and you will probably get a more polite response! And a little story to end with: I was eating soup at a restaurant the other night when I dropped my spoon. A waiter walking past at that moment immediately produced one from his pocket and placed it before me. "Do you always carry a soup spoon in your pocket?" I asked. "Well sir," he said, "We had an efficiency expert give a lecture here last week and he told us that 30 percent of all diners who order soup drop their spoons. So rather than make such frequent trips back to the silverware station he advised us to all carry soup spoons to save time." I had to agree it made sense in an odd sort of way. During dessert I noticed the same waiter walk by, and there was a string dangling from his fly. I motioned him over and discreetly pointed it out. "Thank you sir." he said. "This is part of the efficiency program as well. You see, the other end of the string is attached to my, um, privates. When we male waiters need to pee, we just unzip our fly, use the loose end of the string to pull ourselves out, and pee without ever touching anything. Therefore we don't have to wash our hands and it saves about a minute each time." I thought about this for a moment then asked him, "But how do you get yourself back in your pants?" "I don't know what the other waiters do sir, but I use the soup spoon." See you next time folks

the Mar Menor FOCUS

Enjoy your time near the Mar Menor more, by spotting and identifying the many birds which live and breed here. In this article I will look at Egret. There are two types commonly seen around the Mar Menor; Little Egret and Cattle Egret. Little Egret are large Heron like white birds frequently seen around the Mar Menor. They are generally seen alone and feed on fish and insects around the waters edge and in the shallows. You can spot them near areas of open countryside but also on beaches. I have frequently seen them on the edge of Mar de Cristal and between Los Urrutias and Los Nietos. They nest in colonies, a large colony may be found on Isla Redonda at the southern end of the Mar Menor.

Little Egret Cattle Egret are normally found further from the waters edge, among herds of sheep or goats. They often travel on the back of the animals and feed off insects which are attracted by the animals or disturbed by them as they graze. The type of things they eat are; crickets, spiders, flies, moths and small lizards. Several birds will normally be seen among one herd of cattle as food is plentiful. Cattle Egret may be spotted in areas of open countryside among sheep and goats which are grazing. They are frequently seen in the countryside around El Carmoli. If you have ever been on safari in Africa you will have seen them riding on the back of zebra or buffalo.

Cattle Egret Egret are native to southern Spain and may be seen in the Mar Menor throughout the year. Some Little Egret El Carmoli will migrate to central Africa for the winter but many remain. Both types of Egret breed in the Mar Menor during spring. Lesley Singleton, Aqua Adicta

Rio Safari Elche: A unique and enjoyable animal park with a 'train' ride through the park and some entertaining animal shows to enjoy. Feeding the animals is allowed and the kids especially love feeding the giraffes and the hippo.

A mix between a zoo, a safari park and a community farm, it is even more appealing if you have young children with you. Conveniently located on the CV-865 (Santa Pola to Elche) it is well signposted and easy to find. Your ticket includes free entry into the sea lion show, the parrot show and the elephant show. The shows are all excellent and have commentary in English as well as Spanish. Also included in the price is a train ride around the park and in amongst the animals.

aquarium and a parrot house with some excellent specimens. Between the shows you are free to wander the park and feed the many animals as you go. For the hot summer days there is a large swimming pool with slides which is free for visitors to the safari park. There is a cafeteria and a restaurant where you can enjoy a barbeque or a paella or if you prefer to take your own food there is a large picnic area, and to add to the fun of the day there are also trampolines and go karting. The F un Spot A blonde joke A blind guy on a bar stool shouts to the bartender, "Wanna hear a blonde joke?" In a hushed voice, the guy next to him says, "Before you tell that joke, you should know something. Our bartender IS blonde and the bouncer is blonde. I'm a 6' tall blonde, 200 lb black belt. The guy sitting next to me is a blonde, 6' 2, weighs 225 and he's a rugby player. The fella to your right is 6' 5" pushing 300 and he's a wrestler. Each one of US is blonde. Think about it, Mister. You still wanna tell that joke?" The blind guy says, "Nah, not if I'm gonna have to explain it five times."

Going Home Early There are three ladies working together in the same office - a brunette, a redhead, and a blonde. After a while, they begin to notice that each day their boss, who is also female, leaves work early. After this pattern continued for a few weeks, one

day they decide that as soon as their boss takes off they'll leave right after her; after all, she never comes back or calls so how would she know? So, after their boss takes off they all leave as planned. The brunette was elated to be able to get in a quick workout at her spa before meeting her dinner date. The redhead was thrilled to be home early; she did a little gardening and went to bed early. As for the blonde, she was so happy to finally come home early for once. But when she got to her bedroom she heard a muffled noise from inside. Slowly, quietly, she cracked open the door and was mortified to see her husband in bed with HER BOSS! Ever so gently, she closed the door and crept out of her house without saying a word. The next day during their coffee break, the brunette and redhead mentioned leaving early again and asked the blonde if she wanted to go with them. "NO WAY!" The blonde exclaimed, "I damn near got caught yesterday!"
