HENRY VAN DE VELDE
Henry van de Velde
The architect, designer, painter and theorist Henry Clement van de Velde was born in Antwerp in 1863, the second youngest child of a pharmacist. After initially wanting to devote himself to fine art, and enrolling at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown in 1882, he developed a keen interest in the modern British Arts & Crafts movement, which was influenced by Japan. As a painter of moderate success, he began to take an interest in arts and crafts. He produced his first designs as early as 1892.
Van de Velde's revolutionary design took several attempts before it became a great success. He was particularly helped in this by his acquaintance with the German art critic Julius Meier-Gräfe, who wrote for many influential magazines in France, Belgium and also Germany and who frequently reviewed van de Velde's furniture designs positively. The same was true of Samuel Bing, in whose Art Nouveau gallery in Paris van de Velde's first exhibition took place. Van de Velde became so popular in Germany that he eventually moved to Weimar, where he lived and worked with brief interruptions until the beginning of the First World War. In 1907, he founded the School of Applied Arts there, which, after Walter Gropius became its rector, was transformed into the world-famous “Bauhaus” in 1919.
One of Henry van de Velde's earliest Gesamtkunstwerke is his first residential building: After marrying the wealthy Maria Sèthe, he had the opportunity to design and furnish his own home in Uccle, near Brussels. Without any special prior knowledge, he drew up the building plans and designs for most of the furnishings. The Bloemenwerf house was ready for occupancy in 1896. Due to its unusual appearance for Belgian standards at the time, the building quickly became well known in the small suburb of Brussels, but it rarely received positive feedback; passers-by and visitors usually reacted with amusement or even ridicule to the unfamiliar sight. Nevertheless – or perhaps because of this – international artists and creative minds soon began frequenting the Bloemenwerf house.
Henry van de Velde's early designs are characterized by his desire to be functional or, in his words, “sensible”.

HENRY VAN DE VELDE
Sophie und Curt Herrmann
Sophie Herrmann (née Herz) was born on October 14, 1872, in Mannheim. Both her parents came from Jewish merchant families and placed great importance on providing their daughter with the best possible education. In addition to attending an excellent girls' school, Herz received private lessons in various foreign languages as well as painting and drawing instruction, including in Munich, Paris, and Rome. In 1895, she became a student of the painter Curt Hermann, who was 17 years her senior, and to whom she became engaged the following year. The young couple were introduced to Henry van de Velde through their friend, the art historian Julius Meier-Graefe, whom they met several times during their honeymoon in Paris and Brussels in 1897. They commissioned him to decorate their newly acquired apartment in Berlin's Tiergarten district, thus becoming some of van de Velde's earliest clients in Germany. At the same time, this unique pendant with a corded band was created, enclosing the owner Sophie Hermann's monogram, designed by van de Velde. The Hermanns and van de Velde shared a deep friendship, documented in extensive correspondence, which also records the exchange of gifts between them. In 1911, their relationship with van de Velde culminated in the elaborate redesign of their new apartment at Knesebeckstraße 96. Catalogue numbers 384-394 come from the estate of the painter Curt Herrmann (18541929), a friend of Henry van de Velde, and his wife Sophie, née Herz (1872-1931).

Else von Guaita-Lampe
The furniture designed by Henry van de Velde for the von Guaita-Lampe couple is one of the most impressive examples of the close connection between artistic vision and personal relationships that repeatedly characterized his work. Else von Guaita (1875–1963) was one of Henry van de Velde's early students in Germany. She met the Belgian artist in Munich at the turn of the century before she began working at the School of Applied Arts in Weimar in early 1900. The collaboration between van de Velde and von Guaita-Lampe was not only a business relationship, but also a strong friendship. Van de Velde described her as a lady with ‘extremely refined taste and an alert sensitivity to all things beautiful.’

395
Henry van de Velde
The interior design of her home in Weimar is a testament to a cohesive ensemble in which every detail was part of a harmonious overall concept. In the early 1920s, van de Velde procured furniture for the Kröller-Müller family after Else von Guaita-Lampe moved away from Weimar. In the 1950s, the furniture then passed to Helene KröllerMüller's personal advisor Salomon, also known as Sam, van Deventer, who eventually passed it on to his grandson via his stepdaughter. It is an outstanding example of Van de Velde's ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art.

Peter
Behrens
Around 1900, arts and crafts began to change, moving away from the ornamental excesses of historicism and searching for a new, honest form. In the midst of this period of upheaval, Peter Behrens designed the furnishings for the reception room at the Third German Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Dresden in 1906. It is a cohesive ensemble in which architecture, furniture, and decor form a harmonious whole. In the first monograph on Peter Behrens, Fritz Hoeber praises the design with vivid clarity: "The forecourt-like quality of the coolly reserved hallway prepares the viewer for the cozy splendor of the reception room [...] with a deliberate contrast in effect. In this room, one is reminded of the elegantly stuccoed ceiling, divided into two sections, with coffers on the window side and beam-like longitudinal strips at the back, which Behrens had designed at the same time for the exhibition at A. Wertheim and for Gustav Obenauer. The mood is carried by the same elegant proportionality as there, only here it appears heightened to the majestic, quasi-proud grandeur of an imperial Roman palace style.“
The furniture in the reception room follows the same idea of proportion and unity in terms of its dimensions and choice of materials. The Dresden reception room represents Behrens at the height of his artistic phase, shortly before he moved into the industrial sector as a designer and architect. Today, the presentation of Behrens' furniture in institutions and collections offers an opportunity to once again appreciate the significance of this pioneering interior design.

Gerrit Rietveld, between 1919 and 1923.
Beech square timbers and slats, dark stained, ends of the timbers painted white, natural-colored linen.
Marked: van de Groenekan workshop branding, handwritten paper label.
This chair is an absolute rarity; only two other similar examples are currently known to exist. One of them is in the collection of the Central Museum in Utrecht and another in a Japanese collection.
This type of chair, but with a wooden backrest and vertically attached wooden boards below the armrests, was first published in the magazine De Stijl in March 1920. Another high armchair was presented in the November issue of the same year. A photograph from 1923 shows two armchairs that have further similarities to the version offered here; the backrests are not made of wood, as in the version presented in 1920, but of leather, the ends of the vertically and horizontally attached wooden slats and square timbers are light in color, and the vertical side panels have been omitted.
A report on the dating of the chair, the materials used, and its condition, written by an acknowledged expert very familiar with the subject, is available and will be provided to interested parties upon request.
Provenance: Family-owned in East Germany since the 1990s; acquired at that time from the Holger Fischer Collection, Saxony. Küper/van Zijl, Gerrit Th. Rietveld The Complete Works, Utrecht 1992, p. 77, p. 87.

Marcel Breuer
Born in Pécs in 1902, Marcel Breuer was one of six apprentices who attended the newly founded carpentry workshop at the Bauhaus Weimar in 1920. The training program followed a dual structure: At the beginning, Johannes Itten - from the summer semester of 1922 Walter Gropius - was the artistic director at the Bauhaus, while the practical carpentry trade was learnt in a Weimar company. In 1922, Marcel Breuer was given the opportunity to furnish the entrance area of a house designed by Walter Gropius and Adolf Meyer. In the hallway of the Sommerfeld house, he presented an ensemble of armchairs and side tables made of cherry wood and leather. The way the furniture was made is worth mentioning: Breuer did not join the chair legs, backrests and seats together as was previously customary, but instead inserted the individual elements into one another. The first design for the slatted chair dates from the same year. Breuer produced various versions of the characteristic and unmistakable armchair. The versions differed not only in the choice of wood, but also in the construction. While he used square legs in the early version, dated 1922, he used only wooden slats of the same cross-section in the second version presented here. He also reinforced the backrest with another wooden slat. Breuer dispensed with upholstery; the pieces of fabric stretched between the slats came from the Bauhaus weaving mill.
As the majority of the objects from the joinery workshop were commissioned works, the slatted chair never made it into industrial production. It is not known how many handcrafted examples were produced

Provenance: Family property, East Germany: The chair has been in the consigner's family property since the 1990s when he had acquired it from the collection of Holger Fischer in Saxony. Chieftain Chair
The Chieftain Chair is considered one of the highlights of Finn Juhl's work and one of the most elegant designs in Scandinavian design. Finn Juhl was inspired by modern art, such as the sculptural works of Henry Moore and Hans Arp, as well as older cultures. During a visit to the Louvre, he saw an Egyptian chair whose geometry he imitated in his ‘Egyptian Chair’ and then transferred to the Chieftain Chair in 1949. The special feature of this chair is the structural and visual separation of the upholstered seat and the wooden frame. This gave rise to his characteristic furniture style, which stood out from the classic Scandinavian design of the time. There is a clear contrast to the prevailing style of furniture at the time, including that of Kaare Klint, which was characterized by clean, simple lines and a focus on ergonomics.

Finn Juhl describes the process of creating the Chieftain Chair: I began designing the Chieftain Chair in the spring of 1949. I was at home and started around 10 a.m. with a small sketch consisting of just four vertical lines connected by something. By two or three o'clock in the morning, I had finished drawing it. But I don't really know how long it took me to design this chair. Perhaps I had had a vague idea of wanting to design something bigger for some time.“ Since, in his opinion, Scandinavian design was dominated by lots of small, practical chairs, he aspired to ”design something more pompous." The collaboration between Finn Juhl and Niels Vodder ended in 1972, and the commission for the Chieftain chair went to Ivan Schlechter, who had been working as an upholsterer for Niels Vodder's Chieftain chair since the mid-1950s. Since Børge Mogensen, one of Vodder's best carpenters, had moved to P.P. Møbler, Ivan Schlechter asked P.P. Møbler to produce the chairs for him. This collaboration was to continue until 1987. It is noteworthy that Schlechter's chairs are made exclusively from mahogany.
The Chieftain Chair was first presented in 1949 at the Cabinetmaker's Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen and was so unique that it attracted a great deal of attention. At the unveiling, King Frederick IX sat on the chair, prompting a journalist to suggest calling it the “King's Chair.” However, Juhl did not like this pretentious name and quickly replied, “Better call it the Chieftain Chair,” and so it remained. The Chieftain Chair marked the beginning of a new design language in Scandinavian design, which was later followed by designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Verner Panton.
The Chieftain Chair offered here was acquired in the early 1970s and has been in the consignor's family ever since.

VERNER PANTON
The lot numbers (481-486) all originate from a party room that was designed and furnished by Verner Panton for a private client in the early 1970s. The client was fascinated by the living environments created by Panton for Visiona I and II and therefore explicitly chose these colorful, psychedelic-fantastic living landscapes for his 400-squaremetre party cellar in his home in a quiet residential district of Vienna. The bar was dismantled after the owner's death a few years ago; the remaining furniture and lighting fixtures went to his heirs. Viennese photographer Stefan Oláh was able to photograph this little-known Gesamtkunstwerk in 2019 for his exciting and highly informative photo book on 1970s architecture in Austria (Bunt, sozial, brutal.) and thus preserve it for posterity, at least digitally.
Verner Panton's fabrics were used in this futuristic setting as wall coverings, tablecloths, and partitions; the ‘Ring lights’ on offer achieved cult status through their use in the legendary Spiegel Verlag canteen.

In the early 1970s, a few Italian designers departed from the path of ‘classical’ design and created works that were also referred to as ‘anti-design’ or ‘radical design’: a grass surface, a stony forest path, a foot, a capital, and even an open book (made of plastic)—of course, an artist like Marcel Duchamp with his readymades, who also breathed life into Andy Warhol's pop art, was the inspiration here.

Alchimia
The Alchimia design movement was founded in Milan in 1976 as a reaction against functionalist modernism in Italy by Alessandro Guerriero and his sister Adriana. It viewed design as an artistic process beyond industrial constraints and also drew on ideas from the Arts and Crafts movement. Alessandro Mendini, an official member of Alchimia since 1979, emphasized the connection between art and design as well as the personal signature of the designer in his theories and works. The core team usually consisted of five to seven members; depending on the project, additional external artists and designers were brought in by Guerriero and Mendini.
From 1970 to 1976, Mendini was also editor of Casabella, an architecture and design magazine that had been in existence since 1928. His designs for the Spaziale table and chair are already visible on the cover of issue 299, published in March 1975.
The two objects offered here were shown in 1982 in the exhibition La stanza da manuale at the Galleria Comunale d'Arte Moderna in Bologna and sold shortly afterwards to a gallery in Düsseldorf. Both an invitation to the exhibition and an invoice issued by Alchimia for the sale have been preserved. The chair and table have been in the possession and use of the consignors from western Germany since 1992.
From November 11 this year until January 22, 2026, the ADI Museum in Milan will be showing the exhibition ‘Alchimia. La Rivoluzione Del Design Italiano’.
