Editor's Letter The holidays will be upon us all, ever so soon. And with them, blissful memories will be made. Travel begins to reach your loved ones and reflection begins anew. Why do we need to go through so much effort during this time? The preparations, the dress, the drinks, and so onward we go. We sing songs merrily and welcome friend and foe. You have an incredible connection with your audiences. How did you carve out such an impressive place for yourself in such a competitive business?

My connection comes with caring about how my audience feels. It's no different than the way I would treat strangers sitting around a dinner table. I carved out the position with hard work, luck and a dull spoon.

Recording in the studio or performing live?

Which one refuels you, gives back some level of energy for all that you give out?

In my case, recording in the studio is recording live. The difference is with one I get paid and with the other it costs me money. I love both. !

Quintessentially Canadian

What are some Christmas traditions around the BublĂŠ home? When it does snow out west, are you outside playing or staying fireside with a good Single Malt?

My Christmas tradition is being embedded with my family and friends. We get so little snow that when it does we take advantage by going outside and enjoying it.

Sledding and building snowmen with the kids in our family is a blast.

Being married is a gift on its own, but being a father is magical. I have two young daughters of my own that give me laughter and hope every day. Does fatherhood open anything creatively in you for your music?

Being a father has given me better perspective. Sharing my love of music with my son has made it even more fun for me to listen and to write.

What does the New Year hold for you musically and personally?

The new year will bring a couple new kids, my wife and I are expecting a little boy in late January, and I'm also going to be delivering my own little bundle of joy later in the year (a new studio record). I am truly excited to introduce both to the world as I have taken so much joy in creating both of them. !

Michael Bublé's "Christmas" has become a classic of the genre and one of the bestselling holiday albums of all time. It is one of only a handful of album releases by a Canadian to ever have achieved a Diamond sales certification in this country (10X Platinum.)

Music producer David Foster ! first discovered Bublé when he caught the aspiring star performing at the wedding of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's daughter. The son of a British Columbia-based salmon and herring fisherman, Bublé spent the months his parents were away with his musicloving Italian grandfather, who introduced him to the singers who would become Bublé's idols: Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Sinatra, Ray Charles, and Elvis Presley. !

I" am" currently" a" resident" artisan" at" the" Quidi" Vidi" Village" Plantation" (Craft" Incubator" Program)" in" St." John’s," Newfoundland." As" a" member" of" this" program," I" have" a" studio" which" serves" as" my" workspace" and" fullFtime" retail"space"(open"to"the"public"year"round)."I"am"also"a"juried"member"of" the"Newfoundland"and"Labrador"Craft"Council"and"sold"my"work"at"their" annual"Christmas"show"in"2014.""My"work"can"be"purchased"directly"from" www.ragmaw.com" or" at" my" studio." Several" retailers" in" Newfoundland" carry"my"pieces,"including"Whink"and"Dozen"Odd"Galleries.""

My" passion" for" textile" art" began" at" five" years" old," in" my" grandmother’s" sewing"room."I"was"given"a"kidFsize"plastic"sewing"machine"for"Christmas" but" quickly" rejected" it," insisting" that" I" have" full" access" to" my" grandmother’s"industrial"sewing"machines"instead!""

I" learned" sewing" and" pattern" drafting" from" my" grandmother" (she" ran" a" local" sewing" course)" while" my" grandfather" taught" me" about" hardware" installation" (and" metal" tinkering)" in" his" basement" workshop." My" mom" also" handFcrafted" leather" goods" and" taught" me" a" little" bit" about" those" techniques."I" began" making"bags"at" the" age"of"15." Lusting" after"a" certain" handbag"I’d"found"on"the"Internet,"but"could"not"attain,"I"decided"to"make" my"own…"I"fell"in"love"with"the"process.""

Over"the"past"5"years,"I"have"taken"short"courses"in"screenFprinting,"block" printing"and"colour"theory."In"spring"of"2014,"I"attained"a"Business"Skills" Development"grant"wherein"I"worked"with"a"consultant"to"streamline"my" handbag" production" and" business" plan." I" was" also" granted" a" 6Fmonth" private" mentorship" last" spring" with" an" instructor" from" the" Anna" Templeton"School"of"Textile"Arts."My"mentor,"Barry"Buckle,"helped"me"to" improve" and"refine" several" of" my" bag" assembly" techniques." In"June/July" 2015,"I"will"be"spending"2"weeks"at"the"University"of"the"Arts"in"London" to"study"leather"surface"design"techniques.! "

For" me," product" construction" is" a" stepF wise" process," which" requires" a" variety" of" techniques" including" block" and" screenF printing," patternmaking," and" leatherwork.""

While" this" can"be" challenging," I" take" pride" in" completing" each" and" every" step" myself" while"learning" new"skills" along" the"way."" I" am"especially"intrigued"by"projects"where"I" have" to" think" backwards" ‘from" the" inside" out,’" as" is" often" the" case" with" handbag" construction.""I"work"with"a"variety"of"tools" and" materials," from" upFcycled" fabrics" to" leather"and"metals."

I" am" focused" on" creating" oneFofFaFkindF bags" that" appeal" to" and" represent" a" sense" of" individuality." My" inspiration" is" drawn" from" the" culture" and" landscape" of" my" home" province" –" Newfoundland." Most" of" my" pieces" feature" imagery" from" nature.""

While" producing" pieces" that" are" fashionable," I" strive" to" maintain" a" consistent" colour" palette" that" is" unique" to" Ragmaw! and" also" has" the" feel" of" the" wild," rugged"island"on"which"I"live"and"work."" "

Step"by"Step"Product"description" " I"start"off"by"choosing"the"fabric" that"I"will"use.""I"either"use"upF cycled"tapestry"fabrics"(which"are" endFcuts"from"upholsters)"or"I"print" my"own"fabric.""For"the"handF printed"fabrics,"I"use"screenF printing"inks"and,"generally,"I"print" onto"hempFcotton"mix"or"linenF cotton"mix"fabrics."I"use"either"lino" blocks"that"I"carve"myself"or"I"have" my"drawings"burnt"onto"screens"for" screenFprinting."! !

For"the"screenFprinting,"I"hire"a"local"artist"to"actually" do"the"printing"as"I"do"not"have"enough"room"in"my" own"studio"(this"is"the"only"step"in"production"where"I" currently"have"some"assistance)."Once"the"fabric"is" printed,"I"use"a"heatFsetter"to"prevent"the"inks"from" washing"out.""! !

I"have"drafted"all"of"my"own"patterns"and"have"created" reFuseable"cardboard"templates."So,"after"I’ve"chosen" the"fabrics,"I"cut"all"the"pieces"needed."I"also"use" leather"in"a"lot"of"my"pieces;"I"cut"all"of"the"leather"by" hand"using"weights,"a"rotary"cutter,"and"a"handFheld" strap"cutter"for"thicker"leather"straps."The"leather"is" fixed"to"the"fabric"pieces"using"temporary"leather"glue" before"it"is"sewn"in"place.! !

I"have"several"different"industrial"sewing"machines."I" sew"all"of"my"fabric"pieces"on"a"regular"industrial" sewing"machine;"I"use"my"industrial"walkingFfoot" machine"to"sew"the"leather"pieces."My"large"bags"have" pockets"and"key"clasps,"which"are"also"attached"and" sewn"in"at"this"stage.! !

After"I"have"done"all"the"sewing"on"the"bag,"I"add"the" zipper"closure"(also"done"on"my"industrial"sewing" machine)"and"then"next"step"is"to"add"the"brass" hardware"and"straps.! !

Currently,"I"am"adding"all"of"the"brass"hardware" (mainly"double"head"rivets"and"OFrings)"to"each"bag"by" hand."I"use"a"handFpunch"tool"to"pierce"the"fabric"and" leather"and"then"guide"the"rivet"through"the"piercing."I" set"each"rivet"with"a"hammer"and"setting"tool.""I"use" the"rivets"to"attach"all"of"the"following"pieces:"leather" OFring"holders,"leather"zipper"tabs,"and"leather"zipper" pull.! !

I"add"a"leather"tassel"to"most"of"my"bags,"which"is"a"big" part"of"my"signature"look."I"craft"these"tassels"by"hand" also."I"use"a"rotary"cutter,"leather"glue"and"a"brass"rivet" to"finish"the"look.! !

I"also"add"a"descriptive"tag"to"each"piece"(tied"on"with" jute)"and"pop"a"promotional"postcard"in"each"bag.!
