Hardballers seek deeper run this year

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA sports@qvpr.com With the desire to improve on last year’s playoff push, the Quincy Jacks baseball team prepares for a 2018 season that will see a young bunch of players don the green jerseys.

In 2017, the boys upset a seventh-ranked East Valley-Yakima team before yielding to Othello. This year, the squad is young but talented and ready to work hard.

Mistakes doomed the Jacks against Othello, with the Huskies jumping to a big lead. That was a good learning experience for this year’s squad, said head coach Andy Harris.

“If they are willing to work hard, we are going to have a chance to be pretty good,” Harris said.

On the other hand, the CWAC is always tough, so these younger players will have to take every team seriously, he added.

The Baseball coach one senior on the roster is ace pitcher Kade Schutzmann. He will play centerfield when not pitching.

Sophomore Connor Donovan and Michael Spence might join Schutzmann in the outfield. Donovan may still need some time before he reaches varsity, but “I’m excited to see what he brings to practice,” Harris said.

Tommy Workinger have some varsity experience already. Other names that might man the bags for the Jacks are Andrew Escalante and Noah Tarango, with Nick Gonzalez likely playing at shortstop. Into the mix will be a couple of freshmen who have a shot, Harris said, suddenly keeping his cards close to the vest.

“I’ll just leave their names out for right now,” he said.

“Give ‘em a little motivation.”

On the hill, the team is young, with Spence and Escalante likely to see some innings, along with staff ace Schutzmann. A handful of others could also pitch a few innings, and the team will mix and match until a true No. 2 starter arises.

The team’s offense will be one of its strengths, Harris said. The Jacks will have

to manufacture runs rather than rely on the long ball, but “these young guys, they can hit,” he added.

“Catching up to that varsity level fastball, they are going to have to learn how to manufacture a run, how to get a bunt down, how to move a runner, do the little things well so we can win some games,” he said.

The team’s ceiling will be determined by its defense, Harris said.

“We gotta be able to knock the ball down, make the simple throw, the simple play,” he said. “If we can pitch and play simple defense, we are going to have a chance to be as good as we were last year.”

Season opener is a nonleaguer at home against Cheney on March 13 followed by a road doubleheader against state champion Ellensburg on March 17.

New-look Lady Jacks to emphasize unity

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA sports@qvpr.com With a familiar face as the new skipper, the Quincy Lady Jacks softball team prepares to compete in 2018.

The schedule gives the Jacks zero cushion, with no nonleague games to start.

The season begins against Selah at home on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. “We are going to have that lucky, little four-leaf clover on our side, hopefully that day,” joked former longtime assistant coach Pauline BaughPauline man, now a firstBaughman Softball coach year head coach.

“We will be the ones in green.”

Baughman, a former Lady Jack and Wenatchee Valley College Lady Knight softball player, was the assistant varsity coach for more than a decade, before stepping in to replace Bill Gonzalez.

Mike Benedict will return to coach JV, and newcomer Madeline Loomis will serve as assistant varsity coach – Baughman’s spot last year.

A Baughman-led softball program will emphasize unity between the JV and varsity sides, Baughman said. On the field, the team will focus on defense. Those two things will walk together, Baugh-

“We are going to be excited for each other, so when we perform well, we are going to be able to help each other and let the excitement for one person’s success be a wholeteam success,” she said.

Same goes for when things go wrong, she added.

The team will be faster and more knowledgeable on the base paths, Baughman said.

“The plan is: Get on. I’m going to teach you ways to get on, you’re going to get

on, and when you get on, you’ll know what to do,” she said.

Offensively, the team will seek to rely on all nine batters to bring baserunners home.

Last year’s team could hit, but it stranded many runners.

On the mound, a familiar face will occupy a new role.

Ivania Chavez, an infielder in 2017, will pitch in 2018.

Hannah Soelter will also take the mound for the Lady Jacks.

focus on unity. Mistakes do happen and will happen, Baughman said, but that’s no reason for dissension among the Quincy nine.

The Central Washington Athletic Conference is as tough as ever, with Baughman setting her sights on the upper part of the standings.

And if the result is a little south of mid-pack, that’s OK, too.

“We have to start somewhere,” she said. “This is our first year under my head-coaching, so we are hoping for the best, setting some high goals.”

Team carries a mix of youth and experience

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA sports@qvpr.com Sporting a mix of talented upperclassmen and enthusiastic youngsters, the boys track and field team aims to improve on last year’s performance.

High-jumper Tyson Thornton missed out on going to state by one spot.

“He was at about 5 (feet) 10 (inches),” head boys coach David Stoddard said. “If he can get past that six-foot mark that would pretty much stamp him a ride to state.” He can also make an impact in the javelin and the triple jump, Stoddard added.

Carlos Solorio, Miguel Preciado (shot-put and discus) and Trevor Moloso (hurdles) also bring experience to the table. Gonzalo Birrueta returns as the top long-distance runner for the Jacks.

Among the boys, sophomore Oswaldo Perez showed a lot of promise in his freshman season last year, Stoddard said.

“I’m hoping Oswaldo will be one of our best half-milers this year,” Stoddard said.

schools like Selah and Prosser doubling the turnout for track that Quincy tends to have.

“It’s hard to win league meets when you have 60 kids (turning) out going against 100 kids (turning) out,” Stoddard said.

Asked about the state of the pipeline of talent coming from the junior high, Stoddard said that “it’s always hit-and-miss,” when students leave the junior high and its reduced sports offerings and enter high school, which offers softball, soccer, tennis, baseball, golf and track.

The broad variety makes it harder to get more athletes into track and field, Stoddard said, in particular with the strong

pull of the soccer program.

“Everybody wants to do that,” Stoddard said. “It’s a challenge.” A couple of students showed promise as track athletes in eighth grade, Stoddard added, but it’s all an unknown whether they will show up until they suit up at Jaycee Stadium.

“I won’t bet on it until I see the whites of their eyes,” Stoddard said.

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

A promising year ahead

The only returner with state experience will be Bryn Heikes, a sophomore.

“Really excited to see what Bryn David Stoddard H e i k e s Track coach can do this year,” Quincy girls assistant coach David Stoddard said. In addition to her being a year older,

her longtime training partner, Jane Kennedy, a freshman, will likely join the team.

“That will be a great push for Bryn, and she can help Jane learn the ropes, too,” Stoddard said.

Among girls, junior Avery Vander Veen was the team’s top javelin thrower, Stoddard said.

Junior hurdler Morgan Kleyn will return, and senior Logan Thompson will return, as well, for only her second year in the sport. Stoddard also sounded enthusiastic about what Kleyn and Thompson might bring to the team in the high jump.

Kleyn is the Lady Jacks’ best long-jumper, Stoddard said, and Thompson might be poised for a breakout year.

“We are looking to see some really good things out of Logan,” he said, adding that adding a couple of inches to her jump, might secure a long postseason for the high-jumper.

Another returning hurdler is Julissa Herrejon, who has “shown some good things in the weight room,” Stoddard said.

In the shorter races, the girls team brings back Vander Veen, the team’s top sprinter in 2017. Promising sophomores Ruby Martinez and Piper Horning, along with upperclassman Cynthia Diaz, will also return.

In throws, the girls team will miss Mashayla Schaapman, who graduated last year.

Her sister Samantha was on the team last year, but Stoddard said he’s not sure whether Samantha will suit up.

Lastly, Anne Safe was the top pole vaulter for the Lady Jacks in 2017, reaching the 6’6” mark, and she may not be done.

“She’s put in a lot of hard work,” Stoddard said.

The season will be tough, with a lot of growing pains and learning, but, Stoddard said, “hopefully we will see some individual performances toward the end of the year that gets them into state.”

A season of promise ahead

Armed with a nice mix of youth and experience, the Quincy High boys soccer players face 2018 thinking that if they manage to stay healthy, they may make some noise in the Central Washington Athletic Conference.

Last year’s early exit stung, especially happening a year after the team fought for the state title until the very end, but the squad is ready to turn the page.

“There’s a lot of talent and

a lot of youth,” varsity head coach Arturo Guerrero said.

“The team looks really good, on paper.”

Another new face will be the C team’s head coach. With Manuel Ramos’ resignation, the position has become open, Guerrero said.

On the field, the mix of young and veteran presents a unique challenge for the boys, Guerrero said, adding that everybody, from the seniors on down, will

The schedule begins with a road matchup against 4A powerhouse Wenatchee, the winners of the state title two years ago.

The team has slotted 15 games so far this year. The team will add a 16th game later on, a friendly – an exhibition game – against Quincy alumni as a fundraiser in March.

The schedule shows one additional wrinkle, a non-league matchup late in the season against 4A Eastmont in April.

A non-leaguer right before playoffs is nobody’s idea of a good time, Guerrero hinted.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense for either one of us, but we will see,” he said. “If we have injuries and they have injuries and we don’t want to risk our players, we might play the game but we might not play it with our varsity guys.”

Regardless of the opponent and the date, the Quincy boys just flat can’t wait for the ball to start rolling.

“Everybody is excited,” Guerrero said.

Game on for young players

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA sports@qvpr.com The Quincy High School girls tennis team will face the season eager to see what youth can do, after a season when seniors led the way.

With players like state-placers Rachel Faw and Natalie Thomsen as well as singlist Alysha Donovan having joined the ranks of the alumni, the team this year will be high on players rich on energy and enthusiasm, but not on varsity experience.

“We’re kind of young this year,” said girls head coach Mike Mills. “We are just going to have to see.”

Carrying a squad of young players cools the expectations a little. Mills said that if the team can finish above .500, “it will be a real good thing.”

Another benchmark will be how the team f a r e s Mike Mills against Tennis coach archrival Ephrata.

A good showing against the striped netters from the county seat “would be amazing,” he added. “That’s always a good push for us. Last year

we did pretty well against them overall.”

The Lady Jacks beat the Lady Tigers in 2017.

One of the few seniors this year is Brynn Nieuwenhuis, who split time between singles and doubles last year. If a good partner turns up, she might play some doubles this year, too, depending also on how things look around the always-tough CWAC. The team opens against Ellensburg, followed by a series against Selah. The Vikings are one of the few teams that is not betting on youth this year, having returned several varsity players.

“They will be pretty dominant,” Mills said.

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA sports@qvpr.com For the past couple of years, Quincy boys tennis players have come close to making it to state. This may be the year they book tickets to the University of Washington.

But first, they have to go through Washington State University.

With the regional tournament in Pullman and the state tourney in SeMatthew See attle, the Tennis coach Quincy Jacks will have to head east then west if they want to have a long postseason.

First-year head coach Matthew See, a former assistant for the Jacks, has replaced Alan Rasmussen, who retired from coaching after decades on the sideline in several sports.

A See-coached team will play with special emphasis on attitude, effort and focus, he said.

“No matter who you’re playing, those are things you control,” See said.

And unlike what could be expected of a first-year head coach, he’s not hedging his bets.

“We should be one of the top teams in our league,” he said. “I have some high, high expectations for these guys.”

Behind the big trio, a group of sophomores await, See said. Out of that bunch, the team’s No. 2 singles player and the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams will emerge. Right now, Merred is slotted as the top singles player, and the duo of Petersen-Hodges will start the season as the top tandem.

“I’m excited, and a lot of the kids are excited,” See said, adding that he expected the same kind of turnout, about 66 students, as last year. This year’s schedule shows seven home matches and eight away matches, with districts taking place at East Valley-Yakima.

The season opener is scheduled for March 13 at Ellensburg. The home opener is March 24 versus East Valley-Yakima.

Five out of the seven golfers who reached districts last year are gone, and Sarty is the de facto leader of Pat McGuire a crew of fresh facGirls golf coach es, many of whom have never picked up a golf club before.

Sarty qualified for districts and qualified for state. However, at districts, she self-reported an infraction and did not get to play at state.

“That’s her expectation, that’s what she’s striving for, and we hope to help her get there,” he said.

For the rest of the team, the goal will be to fall in love

with the game.

“We want them to want to go back out. We want them to, even after they are done with high school, we want them to say, ‘Hey, let’s go pick up the clubs and play.’ ” The sight of so many first-timers is an encouraging sign of sorts for the team,

This year, around 17 players turned out, which is about four more than last year.

“We are scrambling, trying to purchase equipment and get fitted for the season,” said McGuire, who added that if there are people willing to lend or donate women’s golf clubs, they are more than welcome to contact the team.

In the meantime, the majority of the team will get to work following and emulating its sophomore leader’s dedication and continuing to build a team and a relationship with the sport.

“There’s things to get excited about and there’s things to enjoy and there’s things that you can relish that don’t necessarily mean competing for a state title,” McGuire said.

Building on last year’s success

With 22 players turning out for the first meeting of the season, the boys golf team at Quincy High is in a healthy spot, with 10 of those players just starting their high school education.

“Ten freshmen,” head coach Chris Trevino said. “I can definitely build a program with that young group, and continue to be pretty strong.”

“It was a pretty successful season for our guys, the best team that I’ve coached,” Trevino said.

Trevino and Van Diest figure to start the season at the top of the Jacks food chain.

Nick Wilson, a player with a little varsity experience, is expected to make the team as well.

“We are expecting big things out of Nate,” Trevino said.

The goal, he said, is to put out the best team, so “whoever is playing the best at that point is who I want out there, because I know the game of golf can be finicky. I got it one day and then I don’t the next.”

Vega played basketball in the winter as did Trajan, and that’s a good sign for the program, the elder Trevino said.

athletic students to join the program, because the more athletic a team can get, the easier the game gets to teach, he added.

“You gotta be pretty mentally tough,” Trevino said of the sport. “You gotta have a lot of resilience. And it’s a really cool game. You’re always going out there and trying to be your best, and then there’s a team factor, when you’re going, ‘Oh, I gotta perform for my team.’”
