Pangborn Airport looks to expand service

After year-over-year records in ridership, Pangborn Airport in neighboring East Wenatchee continues to find ways to expand and fill its capacity.

Ridership aboard Alaska Airline flights into and out of Pangborn Airport hit a record 121,175 in 2015, up almost 10 percent over 2014, and up 50 percent over 2006 numbers.

That upward trend is expected to continue into the future as Pangborn Airport has prepared the runway to accommodate new aircraft with the longer 7,000-foot runway. The $30 million Runway Extension Project completed work in summer 2016. The extended runway length will allow more air carriers with different types of aircraft to offer commercial air service from Pangborn Airport.

Review of passenger destinations from North Central Washington guided the airport to recruit a new flight to the San Francisco Bay area, Airport Director Trent Moyers said.

There are other direct flight options as well, but the San Francisco Bay area is first on the list.

Only a 30-minute drive from Quincy Valley, Pangborn Airport continues to grow in popularity with people living in the Columbia Basin. Riders who call the Quincy Valley home make Relocation Guide 2017-2018

up the sixth largest ridership group at Pangborn, said Craig Larsen, Port of Chelan County’s director of business development.

Alaska flies daily between Pangborn and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The daily scheduled service to Seattle provides the region with one-stop connecting service to 20 major international and 100 domestic destinations. The prospect of added service in 2018 to the San Francisco Bay area will increase the flexibility and opportunity for one-stop connections to destinations worldwide.

Airport Director Trent Moyers links the continued increase in airline passengers to an improved economy, business growth and increased awareness of the airport. Our region now knows the “Fly Wenatchee” brand. Cost effectiveness and convenience are two main reasons to fly from Pangborn. Parking at Pangborn is up to $20 a day less compared to parking at a larger regional airport. Time savings can be significant when calculating drive time, check-in time and security gate time. The cost calculator on the FlyWenatchee.com website can factor those in for you to determine cost effectiveness.

While Central Washington’s abundant sunshine attracts thousands of visitors to the Quincy Valley to play in the Columbia River, fish in the nearby lakes, hike the area’s trails, hunt for birds and deer, and attend concerts at the world-renowned Gorge Amphitheatre, it is also a great place to live.

The Quincy Valley has been attracting settlers for more than 100 years, people looking for a chance to build a better life for themselves and their families. “Opportunities Unlimited” is our community motto, and local people have taken it to heart.

That attitude is seen today in our dynamic economic sectors: agriculture, food processing and high technology. Here, world-class food processing companies are next to data centers of world-famous technology companies.

The rise of data centers in Quincy has brought a new vitality and round of opportunities to the area. New homes are being built, and more subdivisions are expected. The community has invested in new facilities, including a spacious library, animal shelter and police headquarters. The city has also started on the path toward a new city hall and a recreation center. Our schools are being expanded, and a new high school is planned to open soon – a school that promises to provide new opportunities and pride for the community.

This exciting growth and renewal signals another stage of development that can be traced to Quincy Valley’s first permanent settlements in the late 1800s, when immigrants came to plant grain and start ranches.

Quincy was incorporated in 1907. The population hovered around 300 from the 1920s until the early 1950s, when the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project diverted water from the Columbia River at Grand Coulee Dam, about 100 miles northeast of Quincy. With the water, new pioneers came to the Quincy Valley, determined to turn the sagebrush-covered land into productive farms.

Today, Grant County is a leader in farm production in Washington. The Quincy Valley is one of the largest potato-producing regions in the world. Other local crops include peas, beans, corn, alfalfa, apples, cherries, onions, carrots, asparagus and mint. Today, the Quincy Valley is also a rapidly growing wine-producing region.

Port of Quincy: Leading economic development The Port of Quincy is in western Grant County, near the center of Washington. The Port covers 572 square miles, including the cities of Quincy and George, and has facilitated the location or expansion of numerous companies.

The Port works to complement Quincy Valley’s strengths, particularly electricity and electrical infrastructure, irrigated agriculture, Interstate 90 access, railroad access and fiber optic lines. Utilizing these strengths, the valley is home to industries such as food processing, warehousing, agribusiness and data centers.

warehousing nearby to provide shippers with distribution, crossdock and storage.

It is the only intermodal terminal in central Washington and the closest in all of Eastern Washington to the ports of Tacoma and Seattle.

Another infrastructure element, State Route 281, is also a focus for the Port of Quincy, as it works to stay ahead of the area’s needs as it grows. To that end, the Port got SR 281 – which links Quincy to Interstate 90 and is classified a critical rural freight corridor – onto a list of road projects with the hope of widening it to four lanes.

With the volume of Quincy corridors’ motor vehicle traffic, the Port thinks there are also opportunities for hotels and restaurants to serve travelers in Quincy Valley.

quick access to Puget Sound. The Port sees a lot of upside as George becomes a hot location and an important logistical point.

The Port is also placing a lot of emphasis on its intermodal freight terminal in Quincy, located on the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe main line running between Seattle and Chicago. Numerous entities have approached the Port about shipping cargo containers, and the Port thinks there is a big opportunity to make the Quincy intermodal terminal a westbound ocean container shipping hub.

The 16-acre intermodal facility has more than 8,000 feet of railroad side tracks and can easily accommodate loading of westbound short-haul trains with 40-foot and 20-foot containers. There are nearly 1 million square feet of

Our Schools Education and our schools are at the heart of our community, That’s why the Quincy School District, with the support of the Quincy and George communities, has embarked on a two-year plan that will completely reconfigure public schools in the valley and bring a wave of construction.

For starters, three elementary schools will get new gymnasiums, with George Elementary School receiving new classrooms as well.

Secondly, a new building with up-to-date facilities on a new campus is planned for Quincy High School, scheduled to open in 2019.

The current high school building will be upgraded and turned into a new middle school.

Quincy’s junior high will be replaced by the middle school, in the

former high school building, and will educate students in grades 6-8.

Lastly, the current Quincy Junior High School building will become Ancient Lakes Elementary School. As with the other elementary schools in the district, Ancient Lakes Elementary will house students in grades K-5.

There are private schools in the region as well, with Quincy Valley School making its home in Quincy.

The Quincy branch of the North Central Regional Library opened its spacious new building in 2011 and continues to bring educational programs to our community, from science and art to children’s entertainment and lectures.

To honor the faith of their forefathers, a group of Quincy residents restored the 1904 German Lutheran Church, the first church built in Quincy. The church was moved next to the historic Reiman-Simmons House, which was built the same year. on F Street Southwest, Simmons Park is a quiet park with a full play structure for children, lots of grass and some shade.

O’Connell Park This is a small park at the corner of B Street and Third Avenue Northeast.

Quincy Memorial Park Memorial Park, a small triangle at F Street Southeast and Second Avenue Southeast, is the site of the Quincy Valley Veterans Memorial Wall.

South Park Adjacent to Pioneer Elementary School, South Park is the site of the city’s Little League fields.

Quincy Rotary Park This park in downtown Quincy has a fountain and benches for folks to sit, relax and listen to water spilling over the antique equipment parts that make up the unique water feature. The park is also the site of the annual community Christmas celebration.

George Community Park Located next to the George Community Hall, 403 W. Montmorency, George, this park is the hub for many of the festivities in George, from the Fourth of July celebration to the annual bluegrass festival. The park has a community stage and children’s playground, as well as many shaded areas.

What to do in the Valley The Gorge Amphitheatre: Best outdoor venue in North America The Quincy Valley’s No. 1 visitor attraction is the Gorge Amphitheatre.

The venue, considered by many in the entertainment industry to be the best outdoor amphitheater in all of North America, is 14 miles away from Quincy and 9 miles from George.

The Gorge is set in a natural bowl above the basalt cliffs of the Columbia River Gorge. Its scenery and the natural acoustics of the area draw top performers and spectators from across the world.

Concert season kicks off on Memorial Day weekend with the annual Sasquatch! Festival, a four-day music fest that draws some of the best in entertainment. The Gorge caters to many fans, from those who enjoy Watershed, which features top country acts, to those who follow the Dave Mathews Band, a favorite with the locals on Labor Day weekend.

The Columbia River: A bounty of recreational fun The Columbia River forms the western border of the valley, provides residents and visitors alike with plenty of recreational opportunities. From boating and jet skiing to swimming and fishing, there is something for everyone to do at the river.

There are access points up and down the river, with a hub of recreation at Crescent Bar, 7 miles west of Quincy. Crescent Bar features beaches, docks, water sports rental companies, shops, restaurants, two golf courses, campgrounds and rental housing.

Sunland Estates, about 14 miles southwest of Quincy, also has a store and a public-access beach.

Another nearby public access point is at Vantage and Wanapum State Park, about 20 miles southwest of Quincy off Interstate 90. For a list of public access points, go to www.grantpud. org.

Quincy Valley wine: Award-winning wineries In recognition of the unique qualities of this growing region, the federal government granted an American Viticultural Area designation, known as Ancient Lakes of Columbia Valley. The name Ancient Lakes refers to the geological forces that shaped the region, which can be displayed on local wine labels as a badge of quality.

In addition, the Quincy Valley is flush with awardwinning wineries, including Milbrandt Vineyards, Cave B Wines, Jones of Washington, Beaumont Cellars, White Heron Cellars and Errant Cellars.

Most have tasting rooms in the area.

Fruit stands: A taste of the Quincy Valley Quincy and the surrounding areas offer a wide variety of local produce from growers who live in the community and, in some cases, have worked the land for generations.

Locals and visitors enjoy an abundance of delicious foods that come right from the farm.

White Trail Farm Market, 10024 Road U NW, has fresh, sweet local cherries in June and fresh corn and apples in late summer and fall. It also serves espresso and milkshakes.

Hilltop Harvest Barn is at 10086 Rd U 7 NW. Traveling north through Quincy toward Wenatchee, you will find the turn into the store on the right side of the highway, just across from the rest area.

Golf courses: Three courses, lots of sun Colockum Ridge Golf Course, located south of Quincy at 17056 Road 5 NW, is an 18-hole public golf experience. Golfers of all skill levels enjoy a course suitable for walking or riding in Central Washington’s sunshine.

Nature lovers: Chukars, jackrabbits and marmots Driving in Quincy Valley, one is likely to see red-tail hawks, owls, ducks, geese, pheasants, killdeer, chukar, grouse, quail and partridges. There are also occasional sightings of jackrabbits, ground squirrels, badgers, marmots, mule deer and coyotes.

The Quincy Lakes Wildlife Area is one of the most important waterfowl breeding grounds in Washington. Along with the ducks and other species that stay year-round, millions of other birds use the area for resting and feeding as they make their annual migrations across the Pacific Flyway.

The Quincy Lakes Wildlife Area is between the communities of Quincy and George. The main access point is off Road 5 NW about two miles west of Highway 281.

The east side of the wildlife area can be accessed via Highway 281 from Road 3 Northwest.

The Winchester Lake Wildlife Area is also another important breeding ground and stopover on the Pacific Flyway. About 930 acres of land and 1,020 acres of water, it is just north of Interstate 90, about 15 miles southeast of Quincy.

Both locations offer public hunting for game birds, including ducks, geese, chukar, partridge, quail and grouse.

Museums: Explore our local history Built in 1904 by GermanRussian immigrants, Quincy’s Reiman-Simmons House (seen at left) is a museum listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The museum is one of the few buildings left from Quincy’s earliest pioneer days, featuring artifacts, photos and information about Quincy’s history.

More than a museum, it is popular in the Quincy community as a venue for events and celebrations throughout the year.

Some of the annual events are Summer Adventure classes for kids, Harvest Festival in October and an Old-Fashioned Christmas in December.

For another view of local history, visit the Wanapum Heritage Center, which is near Priest Rapids Dam, 45 miles south of Quincy, off Highway 243 North. The Wanapum, which means River People, lived along the Columbia River from above Priest Rapids down to the mouth of the Snake River.
