It’s at the start of summer, the middle of the week and, at 61 years and counting, it’s got no end in sight.

Welcome to George’s Fourth of July celebration, a warm, joyful mix of music, family fun and patriotism, where a small town in Grant County does it up big to celebrate Uncle Sam’s birthday, even on a Wednesday.

The fun begins early with food booths opening at 7 a.m. and several talented hands beginning construction of the fabled “World’s Largest Cherry Pie” around the same time.

At 7 a.m. also, those looking to shed calories instead of collect them,

will meet on the island at Montmorency Boulevard to sign up for the Cherry Bomb Run, which starts at 8:30 a.m.

Then, at 9 a.m., the parade registration opens at the Martha Inn parking lot.

The veterans, always present in these patriotic celebrations, will once again have a position of prominence in the parade.

“We are going to lead the parade,” said Phil Anderson, a longtime resident of Quincy Valley, a war veteran and a member of the George VFW Post 24. “We are going to get a couple of young veterans who are able to carry the flag, (fellow VFW See George page 15

“We are kind of excited this year, because the VFW donated money two years ago to get a new sound

system,” Anderson said, “and they have told me that they have updated that.”

Owens shared in his friend’s excitement, describing the veterans’ participation as “a big part of getting the day started.”

At 11:30 a.m., the pie-eating contest begins on the basketball courts, followed by the cherry-pit-spitting contest and, at noon, the serving of slices of cherry pie a la mode at the

Just before noon, the music begins with the Rusty Hinges bluegrass band performing one of its two sets.

The band got its start in George, so an invitation back is always meaningful to its five musicians.

At 1 p.m., Seattle magician Nate Jester will take the stage. Jester was a big hit during his first George show last year, so a return trip is anything but surprising for this talented illusionist.

starting at 2 p.m. Then, at 3 p.m., the music stops until 5:30, when bluesmen Darnell Scott and Mojo Dave Robinson take the stage until 7 p.m. Then, closing the music will be local band Los Vega, playing from 7:15 p.m. until dusk, which is when the fireworks show begins.

This year’s celebration has a special significance for Anderson, who grew up in the valley and who returned for good in 1984.

Performers have agreed to donate money toward fixing the roof of the George Community Center, the same community center Anderson’s father, a veteran and a onetime bricklayer, helped build.

George Citizen of the Year knows the drill

It’s been a while, but Josephine “Jo” Kniep remembers it well.

The car was a beautiful 1937 Chevrolet, the day was a sunny July morning in 1989 in George, and the occasion was the title of George Citizen of the Year, bestowed upon her husband that time. Kniep (pronounced Kuh-NEEP) rode in the parade with him.

Fast forward a few decades or so, and Kniep is getting ready for one more go round in the parade. This time, it is she who is being honored as George’s Citizen of the Year, after 60 years in town.

“I’m really happy because my husband had this honor, too,” she said. “I was really surprised.”

In addition to her two times in the parade, Jo was also chosen in 2017 to cut the first slice of the traditional cherry pie.

“This was an honor that they called me and asked me,” she said. “I had never done that before.”

Not bad for someone who wondered what kind of place she had moved to when she first arrived with her husband, Elmer, in 1958.

Jo Kniep is the George Citizen of the Year. Her husband was given the same honor years ago, and she got to participate in the Fourth of July parade that time, as well.

They had come from Ashton, Idaho. A farmer, Elmer wanted to find some farmland and heard from some friends that there might be something available in Grant County.

“We farmed for my mother for nine years, and we decided we needed a place of our own because our family was growing,” said Kniep, who added

that the change from southern Idaho to central Washington was a huge shock, especially in the summers.

The weather was milder in that part of Idaho, and their first summer in George, the temperature reached 103 degrees, she recalled.

“And I thought, ‘Why have we moved here?’ I stepped out of the car

to go into the house and my foot was covered in sand. But I love it here now,” she said.

It took a couple of years before she felt at home, although many relatives remain in Idaho to this day. And to this day, Idaho still feels a little bit like home, especially this year, during what she anticipated would be her last trip back, in late June.

“I’m 93 years old,” she said. “It’s hard to get around, I have a walker now. It’s not so hard, but I am not able to travel a lot.”

She has four grown children, one in Wenatchee, one near Mattawa, one in Quincy and one in George.

Elmer passed away in 1993, but she’s anything but alone, she said.

She has six grandchildren (and seven great-grandchildren), and four of the grandchildren live close by.

“I’m truly blessed with my family,” she said. “I’m just so thankful for them.”

Back in 1958, the Fourth of July celebration was one year old. To this day, the inaugural celebration is the only one she has missed, she said.

In six decades, she never thought of going anywhere else to live.

“George is special to us,” she said.

Construction makes a huge difference at George Elementary

For anyone involved in George Elementary School, the phrase “what a difference a year makes” really is true.

A big construction and renovation project was completed last summer just in time for the new 2017-2018 school year, and it is a hit.

Principal Curt Schutzmann just completed his second year at the K-5 school, and things changed a lot in one year. Construction includes: a new gymnasium; eight new classrooms; four new restrooms; a new staff work room and two flex rooms for small student groups.

Schutzmann explained what the project has meant.

“I think that the biggest

difference it has made for staff is having everyone in the building. Prior to the construction, we had three portable classrooms that housed our second- and third-grade classes, as well as our music and TBIP (Transitional Bilingual Instructional Program) classrooms.

It is great having everyone in the building. We have a total of 14 classrooms in the building.”

In addition to the new construction, the school received a major makeover, upgrading most everything.

“We were able to have new carpet installed in the existing portion of the building as well as new paint and new, more energy-efficient lighting,” Schutzmann said. “Our cafeteria got a

fresh coat of paint and new flooring. We had carpet and replaced it with a vinyl flooring. As far as technology, each classroom has a touch screen Promethean Board that teachers use to support their instruction during class time.”

George is part of the Quincy School District.

It was really important to the Quincy School District superintendent and assistant superintendent that the school didn’t feel like there was an old and a new section, he explained.

With the remodeling of the original building, that isn’t a problem.

P.E. classes to start. When that was done, tables and equipment had to get back in place in order to serve lunch. Of course, as soon as students finished eating, everything had to be cleaned and stored again in time for afternoon P.E. On top of that, every Monday morning the room was used for whole-school meetings, monthly student assemblies, guest speaking and presentations and of course the many family night events.

With the addition of the new classrooms, it means all students are housed in one building. Before this, portable classrooms were used for some classes, which meant, bad weather or not, students and staff had to head to separate buildings away from the main school.

It’s a bit of an understatement from Schutzmann who said, “The gym has been a significant addition to our school.” Now, the gymnasium is actually the gymnasium.

It’s not just the students and staff who have seen and felt a difference with the construction project.

“I think that the community response has been positive about the new additions here at George

Elementary. Parents have been very pleased with the new construction,” Schutzmann said.

“We had a fantastic turnout during our grand opening ceremony this last fall and the parents all seemed to very proud of the new additions. In the short time that I have been here at George, the parent support has been amazing. We are very grateful and appreciative of the support that we get from the parents and the community.”

Quincy School District Assistant Superintendent Nik Bergman, who served as George Elementary School principal several years ago, had something to say about George and the new school.

“George went from having a school that really needed attention to one of the nicest schools in the district. The city of George deserves to have a great school,” he said.

He added that the people in the community have a deep sense of pride and the changes at the school have just made that greater.

School is out for summer, and the break is, of course, much needed, but returning in the fall can’t help but look a bit brighter thanks to the extensive improvements at George Elementary.

Look at those flowers, by George

Swaying in the breeze, the bright trio of red, white and blue is eye-catching, to say the least.

Yes, the flags on display for the Fourth of July are eye-catching, but so are the hundreds of petunias along the Washington Way walking path, planted and tended by the community service group, the Georgettes.

Marylou Krautscheid, who leads the George Beautification Project, said the project started with individual people each doing a portion of the work. The Georgettes volunteered to take on the project about 10 years ago.

The group cleaned the ground between the trees along the walking path, as well as behind them. Once Sebastian Moraga/Post-Register free of the many weeds, Marylou Krautscheid the area was ready for till the ground with a roto- petunias,” Krautscheid said, Krautscheid’s trusty tool.

“In the spring, I usually tiller and get it ready for the adding that irises and daylil-

ies form the background for the petunias.

After fertilizing and putting down weed killer, Krautscheid also deadheads the irises, removing any faded blooms and foliage to keep the beds looking their best. Then, she said, “The Georgettes plant the petunias and keep them mowed and taken care of throughout the summer.”

This spring, Krautscheid spent about four hours, along with Lynn Felder and Yvonne Boon, planting hundreds of petunias to create a vibrant border along the path.

Since George is a patriotic community, Krautscheid said, the flowers are arranged in a red, white and blue theme: “Six red, six white, six blue in a pattern all up and down the walking path.”

The Georgettes rely on the Quincy High School FFA for their colorful blooms each year.

Rod Cool said the group orders the rooted plugs in late January, 285 of each color, to be exact. Once in the Quincy High School greenhouse, FFA members tend the plants, along with thousands of other plants.

The greenhouse fills quickly over the early spring, until nearly 22,000 plants sit ready for new homes.

The petunias for the beautification project leave first, delivered via stock trailer to the Georgettes.

Of the group of students he leads, Cool said, “They’re pretty proud at the end, when we start moving things out, seeing (the results) of their hard work. We went from plants that are half-inch tall to these beautiful, full-grown plants.”

When the frost hits, the Georgettes clean up the flowers, haul away the waste, and put the project to bed until the next spring.

Antique tractors rumble into town

Hank Ramsey holds membership in a very unique group.

“The Columbia Basin Antique Power Club is about 20 years old,” he explained. “I joined this group five years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed my association since then.”

Ramsey and his fellow club members share an interest in antique tractors.

“I am 79, and my interest in tractors is longstanding,” he added proudly. “Recently, I fully restored a Ford tractor. This is an exact model my father had in the hosts a July 4 tractor run in early 1950s.”

The Community Hall in George has been a place of parties, weddings and jam nights since 1964. The local residents joined forces to build their gathering place. It is time again to show strong mutual effort to maintain the building: the roof is in urgent need of replacing.

Jesús Santiago is one of the past patrons of the Community Hall. He had both his wedding and baby shower under its roof.

“I like the hall. It was a very nice place for my parties, and the rent was reasonable,” Santiago said.

“I don’t know where people would go if we didn’t have (the) Community Hall.”

As for adding to the donations toward the roof repairs, Santiago thought a yard sale might help.

Blanchard suggested looking for manpower besides financial donations.

He thought getting in touch with the high school could

help, to see if they have some student programs that could step in to assist.

Another possibility is the Corrections Department, which could send individuals on work release to participate in physical work. Maybe the roofing materials could be donated? Blanchard was eager to think of ways to help the hall.

Debby Kooy and the Georgettes are busy at work daily in looking for ways to collect the necessary funds, estimated at $72,000, to replace the roof of the muchloved hall.

Rusty Hinges return to where it all started

Getting old can have its rewards: things like job seniority, having another cookie without needing permission, or finding a really cool name for your band.

That was the case for the Rusty Hinges bluegrass band – performing on the Fourth of July in George. Its five musicians weren’t even a band, just five friends attending a bluegrass festival, when they were first asked to fill in as performers.

“They had a day of open mics, and nobody had signed up for a couple of spots,” said Al Price, one of the five friends. “We were all playing together at the campsite, because we are all buddies, and the organizers of the festival came and said, ‘Can you guys do 20 minutes?’and we said OK.” The person in charge of the show asked the group if it had a name. as how the stairs to the stage were becoming a challenge for their sore legs and knees, turned around and said, “Right now, we got rusty hinges.”

The show went well enough that the newly christened Rusty Hinges got offers for three gigs within a week. Their first show

as a bona fide band was in George, so the town has always held a special meaning for the band, Price said.

For the past three years, the Rusty Hinges have performed in a variety of places around the state. That’s not a small feat when you consider that the bass player, Jan Delfel, and her husband, guitar-

ist Jim Delfel, live in Yakima, guitarist Curt Fields lives in Kennewick, mandolinist Ron Clark lives in Chelan and Price, and banjo player Al Price lives in Auburn.

“We don’t see each other for six months in the wintertime,” Price said.

They get together in smaller groups when they

can, or use YouTube videos of their stuff to stay sharp.

And when the weather turns warm, the five friends reunite and start working on new stuff.

The key to their success is they all like playing together and they are all having fun, Price said, which the audience can tell.

“It’s like we are throwing a party and everybody’s invited,” Price said.

Part of that is due to the nature of the group, five longtime friends, but also partially due to the very nature of the music they play.

“Bluegrass has a social quality about it,” he said.

“Bluegrass is something you play with other people, and it’s got a little bit of magic sometimes. You can meet somebody … play a song you never heard before, and next thing you know, you’re playing it with this complete stranger. And you make great friends.”

Keeping George humming

George is a small town with a lot of heart, and helping keep that heart beating is Aaron Harwood, the city’s public works superintendent.

Harwood has been on the job for two and a half years and is often seen around town in a white Ford Ranger pickup with the George emblem on the Aaron Harwood side.

He has a helper in the summer, but Harwood is pretty much responsible for keeping the city in physical shape. Some of his responsibilities are maintenance of pumps, vehicle mechanical work, street patching, signs, meter reading, spraying weeds, sampling drinking water and sewer water, disposal of treated wastewater, graffiti patrol and irrigation at parks, street islands and easements.

He has to be a jack of all trades.

He also has to be certified by the state of Washington for certain tasks.

He has earned those certifications,

as a water distribution manager and wastewater treatment plant operator, through study online. He also has a commercial driver’s license and pesticide license.

Mayor Gerene Nelson emphasized the value to the city of Harwood’s certifications. It is a huge convenience to have him in town and certified, rather than the city falling back on Gerene Nelson contractors.

“If there is an emergency, he is right here,” she said.

But preventing emergencies from arising is the goal, Nelson and Harwood agreed.

Getting things organized to prevent emergencies from happening comes naturally, as Harwood likes to know how things run. And, he finds satisfaction in the work and is just plain happy to be here.

“Aaron is doing a fantastic job,” Nelson said. “We are very happy to have him. He is a hard worker and very willing to learn – and there’s a lot to learn!”

Blueline opens in industrial park

Mayor Gerene Nelson is excited to see recent developments in George, including Blueline Equipment’s new building and the new fire training facility.

People and groups from all over the region will send firefighters to George for training now, she said, and local fire volunteers don’t have to leave for training either.

“It’s a nice addition to our town,” she said.

Blueline opened its new building in an industrial park north of Interstate 90, next to Ancient Lake Wine Co., which recently opened a state-of-the-art bottling plant.

“It’s pretty exciting to have that industrial park grow,” Nelson said.

Kelly Brown is the store manager at Blueline in George.

Blueline’s new location alongside Highway 281 is very visible from the highway, but access is from Beverly Burke Road and into the industrial park on a new road called North Garnett Road.

The business had operated at 603 S. Frontage Road NW, just outside the George city boundary, for years.

The new steel frame building gives Blueline at least three times as much space, Brown said, at approximately 8,500 square feet.

“Everything in this place is state of the art,” Brown said.

A grand opening will be planned, when there is time, but for now he said the crew is busy with the move, besides the everyday business. The business is open Monday through Saturday.

There will be four to five employees at the new place shortly, and the staff will rise to 10 to 12 when the expanded operation is at full speed, he said.

The business is a Kubota dealer and sells and maintains equipment for orchards, vineyards, row crops and hay customers. Blueline also manufactures a line of equipment of its own.

“We are very happy to have them” in the city, said George’s mayor, Gerene Nelson.

Los Vega bring a touch of Michoacán

Los Vega, a band from Royal City that specializes in Tierra Caliente music, will be in charge of closing the musical lineup at this year’s Fourth of July celebration in George this year.

Tierra Caliente is a type of traditional Mexican music hailing from the low-elevation states of Guerrero and Michoacán, the latter of which is home to some of the longest-tenured members of Los Vega.

Natives of Ucacuaro (OoKAH-kwa-roe) in Michoacán, the group has been together off and on for more than two decades, with relatives and friends mixed in the lineup.

Jorge Hernandez Vega, one of the leaders of the band, said that Los Vega have taken their brand of Mexican sound to places such as Idaho, Oregon and Texas. This year’s show will

George Community Hall pie pan retires with dignity

Is 59 years too young to retire? Not if you are a pie pan – it’s actually high time to let a new one hold up the crust.

When it became evident that the much used 8’ by 8’ pie pan that had been serving the world’s largest cherry pie every Fourth of July at George Community Hall was finally too worn for the duty, Jack Foglesong stepped in.

He proposed that the old pan be given a new life instead of being discarded.

It now decorates an outside wall of the Hall.

George’s founding father, Charlie Brown, had the steel pan made at Pioneer Metal in George. The dish is 8’ by 8’ and 6” deep. It was sandblasted in Wenatchee.

The pan was sturdy enough to hold pies from 1957 to 2016. It took several peo-

In the early days, the Georgettes picked and pitted the cherries as well as made the crust. It was a time-consuming and laborious process. People don’t seem to have the time for such tasks anymore, with jobs that take up their days.

The old pan now rests prominently on the Hall’s exterior wall that faces the park, where it used to serve generations of locals and visitors. The design on it says: “George Community Hall/World’s Largest Cherry Pie/Established July 4, 1957.” The profile of George Washington, the first U.S. president, dominates the center with clusters of cherries lining both sides of his image.

The pan may be banged up and bent, but it is a firm testament of a community that shares and cares. May the pan witness many more happy times at the Hall.
