Quincy’s Jones is state teacher of the year

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA sports@qvpr.com Camille Jones, an enrichment teacher at Quincy’s Pioneer Elementary School has been named the 2017 Washington State Teacher of the Year.

Jones received the honor Sept. 19 at a ceremony at Seattle’s Experience Music Project.

Quincy schools’ chief John Boyd issued a statement praising Jones.

“Camille is a teacher who is always striving to meet the needs of 21st century learners with innovative activities that are hands-on and that integrate technology in ways that motivate learners. She is a teacher who gets results and her reach goes well beyond the classroom, as she targets every single kid in the school for enrichment challenges for students,” the statement read.

“Camille is a team player who works collaboratively with students, staff and parents to make enrichment available to all kids in ways that are fun, meaningful and challenging.”

As the state’s teacher of the year, she is now a nominee for 2017 National Teacher of the Year, which will be announced in the spring by the next president of the United States.

Already the regional teacher of the year for NCW, Jones had to write a handful of essays and undergo mock interviews as part of the selection process. Then, she spent the weekend at a teachers’ training camp in Olympia, with the

other seven regional teachers of the year. Next, the nominees got to meet last year’s state teacher of the year and speak to Gov. Jay Inslee about the needs and plans for education in the state.

“He wanted to hear our opinion about different education policy concerns,” Jones said. “He asked us about student opportunity and how we felt we could better increase equity and opportunity for all kids in our state’s education system.

All these meetings and interviews occurred in a 72hour period prior to the announcement. There was no sense of competition among the eight nominees, Jones said. In fact, she said, she remembers feeling awe at what the other teachers dealt with at work.

“One of the girls was a specialist in Sequim who serves students with emotional and behavioral disorders,” she said. “I mean, she’s a hero.

Hardly any teacher would even stay in that classroom.

And there’s a variety of stories like that.”

The award comes with a long list of responsibilities, tasks and thrills for Jones.

One of the thrills is she will get to speak to Microsoft founder Bill Gates, one of her childhood heroes. Another childhood dream come true thanks to this award is a trip to NASA space camp.

The responsibilities include a six-month residency that will keep her away from the classroom during part of 2017, starting in January.

“I will be sent out to do more speaking and talking to legislators,” she said.

Jones said that being away from the classroom doesn’t set too well with her, but she understands that she has been given a great opportunity to make a difference, not just at a local but at a regional and statewide level.

“It’s given me a voice,” she said. “Having this title gives me an amount of respect and that people stop and listen.

Like with the governor. He listened to what we had to say.”

Jones said she believes every child deserves to have a chance to be inspired, to have every opportunity and to grow

to his or her full potential. The title will give her a platform to speak about that to people who will listen.

Jones credited QSD’s Carole Carlton with starting the enrichment program she teaches at Pioneer many years ago.

“What we have here in Quincy is really special and has been really successful,” she said. “I get to say ‘look at all this amazing work we are doing in Quincy,’ and I don’t think everyone always hears about that, coming from Quincy schools and that’s exciting, too.”

The award was a thrill not just for Jones, her co-workers

and her family, but also for her students, both current and former. Some of them dropped by for a congratulatory hug even after school was out.

Before she left for the award ceremony and her busy weekend, many students made cards for her, even one shaped like a suitcase.

“I think some of them thought I wasn’t coming back,” she said with a laugh.

The children’s pep talks ran the gamut from the basic to the downright sophisticated.

“They told me to have a good time and not be nervous and that my brain could grow big enough for me to do this,” Jones said.

Bluegrass Festival

By Debby Kooy The 10th annual Bluegrass Festival was held at the George Community Park from Monday, Sept. 12 through Sunday, Sept. 18. The musicfest marked the end of the festival season for many bluegrass fans. The George Community Hall and George Park served as venues for an event that featured a relaxed atmosphere that bluegrass enthusiasts relish, enabling pleasant hours of “jamming,” making music with friends and acquaintances. The free, weeklong event also featured stage performances by

bluegrass bands on Friday and Saturday, including The Combinations Band, Roosevelt Road, Heartbreak Pass, Rusty Hinges, Moses Willey Band, The Weavils, and Farmstrong. The Roosevelt Road led free instrumental and vocal workshops, as did Rusty Hinges and Farmstrong bands on Friday and Saturday.

Saturday evening’s special attraction was a $15 a plate Dutch Oven dinner served by the Dutch Oven Club from Moses Lake, and on Sunday, the Bread of Life Church Band led a community worship service.

“You have to make sure that what you are saying is extremely clear,” she said.

“You have to make sure you’re not attaching too many meanings to that song, so that you confuse the listener, "What are they saying, what do they mean by that?”

She has written more than 100 songs in her career. The music tends to come first to her, and then the tone of the music, the “mood” as she calls it, dictates the lyrics.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2016 A former cosmetology student, she has recorded three albums so far, and said she hopes to travel sometime next year to Nashville to start working on her fourth.

“Different seasons of life take me through different experiences,” she said, and that tends to color her songwriting.

Being on the road presents unique challenges to someone trying to lead a Christian life. An important factor, she says, is whom you surround yourself with, and Starr

credits her drummer Nicole Hickman as a positive influence in her life.

“She’s an amazing Christian girl, with a heart for the Lord like nobody I know,” she said. “She’s always there with me, 100 percent of the time when we travel, we are in the same place, so there is an accountability there.”

The real challenge is to remain positive and keeping one’s mind on the purpose of the journey, she added.

“It’s more of a mental battle sometimes,” she said.

“It’s like ‘I’d rather be home with my cat and my husband.’ But overall, it’s a really good experience, doing Christian music.”

She gets testimonials from Facebook or after shows about the impact her music has made in people’s lives.

“Obviously that’s not me changing them, that’s the message of Jesus in the music that changes them,” she said. “At least that’s what I believe.”

She might delve into other types of music, but the mes-

sage will remain the same.

That’s why she got into music in the first place.

“I had a passion in my heart for my friends to know Jesus,” she said. “One way for me to share that with them was songwriting. For me to quit doing that, it would probably feel like a hobby. I would still enjoy it but it wouldn’t have as much passion in it.”

Adams, being the next senior member of the council, said she respected Farmer’s decision and would accept the position if a montion was made.

Council members voted unanimously to give Adams the authority to act as mayor pro tem in the absence of the mayor until December 31.

The resolution requires that Adams serve only until the end of the year “or upon the death, incapacity or resignation” of the mayor.

Quincy’s city council passed a resolution designating councilmember Debra Adams as permanent mayor pro tem.

Council members offered the positions to Wayne Farmer at the Sept. 1 meeting, but farmer said he was not ready to make a decision at the time.

When Farmer was again asked to accept the position to serve in the absence of Mayor Marcel Dorais, Farmer said he had given the matter serious thought. Farmer said, “I respectfully refuse the request.”

QPD works for you

Every year during National Night Out and Farmer Consumer Awareness Day I speak with Quincy citizens and learn what your Police Department, is doing well and where we can improve.

I am thankful many of our citizens are willing to provide feedback so we can continue to improve as a PD. These opportunities to visit with you are the highlight of my job. The best part of being Chief is the time I get to just hang out with citizens and learn what you want from our department.

Many thanked our officers for a job well done. Our citizens appreciate the effort police officers give to make our neighborhoods safer.

Most comments are positive and want us to continue the good work. I am especially proud of the conversations where citizens tell me they like the direction the department is headed.

They appreciate the customer service that the officers care and are pleasant.

I am thankful that so many like the direction we are headed and encourage us to stay on this path.

Almost everyone has asked the status of the new police station. The good news is we are almost done. We were projected to receive the keys to the building on Friday, September 16, 2016.

We would then have one week to vacate the old police station and move into the new building.

As anyone who has moved knows, moving can be a busy and mildly chaotic week, but we have a plan to continue to provide police services seamlessly to our community.

Citizens should see no difference when they call the police. The only change will be the new building. Our new address is 223 1st Ave S.W., Quincy.

Once we are settled, we are planning on having two or three open houses for the community to visit and tour the new facility.

I expect to have both evening and weekend open houses to accommodate as many schedules as possible. I recog-

nize that this is your new police department and you have blessed us with the finances to build it.

Each citizen should have the opportunity to see what’s inside this building. As soon as I know the dates we will advertise right here in the Quincy Valley Post-Register.

This fall I will be forming a Citizens Advisory Committee, made up of volunteers to provide input to the QPD on issues facing our community.

My goal is to create a group of citizens that represent our community and share on a continuous basis what the citizens of Quincy need and want from its department.

This fall we will also be recruiting citizens to be part of our Neighborhood Watch program.

We will ask citizens on each block to get to know each other and commit to watching out for each other. Making sure everyone has all their neighbors’ contact information.

This program is about neighbors protecting each other. You know best who belongs in your community.

You will also connect with

your assigned officer so you know who to call when you have a non-emergency question.

Community Services Officer Sergio Castillo will lead this project and will answer questions and assist you.

I want every citizen to know the guidelines I give our officers to follow as they provide police services to our community: -Be the kind of officer you want to have respond to your Mom’s house.

-We are here to be a part of the fabric of the community, not occupy the city.

-Don’t leave a call worse than you found it when you arrived.

-Make sure you bring value to every decision you make and action you take on behalf of the citizens and department.

The Quincy Cemetery received a facelift last week thanks to the effort of a varied community members, including Rotary members and the cemetery district.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Make A Difference Day, the largest day of community service in the world, will be featured at the Quincy Senior Center, 522 F St. S.E., when I, Laurel Helton, the local coordinator in Wenatchee, will come to speak on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 1 p.m.

Quincy is a great community that really lives up to our motto of “See a need, do a good deed.” This is a great opportunity to learn about Make A Difference Day, as well as hear about this year’s Hat Project in Quincy.

Over the past 25 years, Margie Kerr and I have coordinated hundreds of projects to improve communities or the lives of the people in them.

This year’s Make A Difference Day is Oct. 22 and every Quincy resident is invited to participate.

The grassroots effort to reach out beyond yourself started in 1992 with a challenge by USA Weekend Magazine to every person in the United States. The idea caught on immediately, went global, and is now held on the fourth Saturday of October every year.

Wenatchee Valley Make A Difference Day organizers join together with surrounding communities such as Quincy, Leavenworth and Entiat.

They have received seven top national awards, including being named the very first

Make A Difference Community. The Wenatchee Valley was featured on the cover of USA Weekend Magazine for its winning efforts and has received tens of thousands of dollars in prize money.

Bonnie Kniveton of Quincy has organized projects in Quincy for several years.

She is chairman of the Senior Center’s Chat and Stitch/ Quincy Hat Project that will hold an Oct. 22 knit-in at the Senior Center.

They will make hats for Quincy Elementary School students as part of Make A Difference Day. Anyone can come to the knit-in, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For that project, bring knitting needles, crochet hooks or knitting looms. If you have a favorite pattern for a hat for children, bring that too. Yarn will be furnished.

The Hat Project was started

Laurel Helton Wenatchee To the editor, Many of you have already noticed a big change at the Quincy Valley Cemetery. (See above) The arborvitae trees, which have been a permanent fixture on the west side of the cemetery for as long as anyone can

remember, were removed by a volunteer work crew organized by the Quincy Rotary Club last weekend.

The Rotary Club coordinated with the Quincy Valley Cemetery District to undertake this task as a first step in an improvement project, which will include new curbs, sidewalks, fencing, trees and other amenities.

We understand that change like this can be difficult and none of us relished the idea of extracting the arborvitae, but it was time to remove the dying trees as they could no longer be saved, according to an experienced landscape architect who is helping with the project.

We are excited about the improvements that are coming to the cemetery. We invite everyone with an interest in the cemetery improvements to follow the Friends of Quincy Valley Facebook page.

Chuck Allen, Quincy Rotary Club President Dear Editor, I am a private attorney who practices regularly in Grant County Superior Court.

I have appeared before both Judge Estudillo and his election opponent, Nick Wallace, when he occasionally serves as a Pro Tem Commissioner handling juvenile matters.

I think the voters should know that there is a dramatic difference in temperament between Judge Estudillo and Mr. Wallace.

Judge Estudillo is known for his calm, rational, judicial

demeanor and the respectful way he treats everyone in his courtroom. He is both humble and thoughtful.

And his rulings are sound and based on the law. I have also had the opportunity to observe the Judge campaigning to retain his seat on the bench.

There is no sense of entitlement in his approach to his election campaign.

By contrast, everything I have seen and heard from Mr. Wallace projects a sense of entitlement, and overstates his qualifications and experience.

His message seems to be, “I was the chosen one, I got robbed of the appointment, Estudillo couldn’t possibly be more qualified than me, and he’s nothing other than a place-holder.”

I know that I am not the only one who is offended by Mr. Wallace’s attitude.

Judge Estudillo is widely respected by the attorneys who appear before him, wellliked by the Court staff, and his 16 years of experience as a lawyer on both sides of the mountains is, I presume, one of the many reasons he was appointed to this position in the first place.

Mr. Wallace’s courtroom experience is minimal compared to Judge Estudillo’s.

Indeed, someone like Judge Estudillo is a credit to the judiciary and Grant County.

He is everything we deserve to have in a judge. He was the right choice for appointment, and the voters should retain him in this position.

Dear Editor The Quincy Valley Library Foundation would like to publicly thank our local Microsoft for its generous donation and support over the last few years.

Recently Microsoft donated $8,000 to be shared between the Quincy Public Library and the George Public Library.

This grant money came in just in time to help both Libraries prepare for their Summer Reading Program.

The George Public Library was able to spend their money on more child and teen friendly furniture.

They added new chairs to go with the Teen Game Table, which is always in use. The children now have a fun bookworm that they can sit and climb on while in the library.

Also a beautiful floor rug was added as well. All of these items had previously been on the George Library’s wish list.

The Quincy Public Library was able to purchase their own Minecraft Server. The educational version of the Minecraft game has been extremely popular at the Quincy Public Library for quite a while, and the library was not able to keep up with the demand.

So the purchase of their own Educational Minecraft Server solved this problem.

Now with this server, only the children in Quincy who have signed up to play are allowed access to this game. No one else can have access to it.

This makes it extremely safe, and the parents seem to Continued on page 8

The Minecraft game is so popular that not only do the kids play daily on the 15 public computers, but during the summer, the library staff started a separate Minecraft Club that was available three times a week. This was so successful that the library staff will be starting this up again in October once or twice a week after school.

Dear Editor, I'm a lawyer who practices in Moses Lake (and lives in Soap Lake) who supports Judge David Estudillo in the upcoming election. I believe that former Grant County Superior Court Judge Ken Jorgensen may have submitted a letter to your paper last week regarding Judge Estudillo and his challenger in the election, Ephrata lawyer Nick Wallace.

If so, I would ask you to print the following letter to the editor to correct misinformation in Judge Jorgensen's letter: "Retired Judge Ken Jorgensen had the facts wrong in his recent letter to the editor about Judge Estudillo and his challenger, attorney Nick Wallace. Judge Jorgensen has been retired from the court for nearly eight years, so perhaps he doesn’t have the most current or accurate information.

Judge Jorgensen wrote "Nick Wallace has 20 years of courtroom experience" and current Judge David Estudillo "has virtually none." With respect to both the Judge and Wallace, he is simply wrong about the facts.

According to information Wallace himself submitted to Grant County when he unsuccessfully applied to be a district court judge in 2011, he had participated in only six trials in his entire career. He was sole or chief counsel in only four of these, and only one was a jury trial. And at a recent candidate forum, Wallace admitted that he has had limited or no trials in recent years. Carl Yeates has been appointed commissioner for Grant County Fire District 3, replacing James Reimann, who moved out of the district’s boundaries and resigned last month.

Yeates was one of three people who applied and all had great qualifications, commissioner Keven Gardner said.

A former volunteer with the district for 10 years, Yeates is “very concerned and very passionate about stuff,” Gardner said. He has been a Scout leader for many years, “and we felt that Carl

She’s pursuing an associate of arts degree online with Brigham Young University-Idaho, and teaches tax law and tax preparation for prospective H&R Block employees.

Janet Lybbert has joined the staff at the Quincy Valley Post-Register.

Lybbert, a native Quincyite, is the newspaper’s new bookkeeper, replacing Sharon Lalley, who resigned to return to Montana and spend more time with her grandchildren.

This is Lybbert’s second stint with the QVPR. She worked for the paper for five years until the mid-2000s.

Quincy soccer seeks progress in 2016

You have no doubt heard that old adage about how to start a journey of a thousand miles.

Well, for the Quincy’ girls soccer team, that first step occurred last year: a league win, 3-2 over Wapato after a winless league season in 2014.

So now the Lady Jacks want to take that next step, obvious as it may sound. A second league W on the ledger before the season ends.

“We are not shooting for a specific win total as much as we are shooting for that next win,” head coach Eric Nelson said. “If we can get that next win, I think we are going to gain a lot of confidence.”

They have already earned a non-league win, a thrilling comeback victory against Chelan that saw Alysha Donovan score four goals to erase a 3-0 deficit.

“It wasn’t a surprise,” Nelson said of the rally and the win. “We knew they had it in ‘em.”

Donovan has five goals for Quincy as of Sept. 20.

“You get the ball on her feet and good things happen,” Nelson said. “She’s really making the most of her senior season.”

The subsequent results after the trip to Chelan haven’t been as sunny, with three losses in three games, against

Ellensburg, Grandview and Wapato, but it’s a long season and a young team, and the team’s goals haven’t varied despite the early setbacks.

Losses like the one against Warden serve as learning eperiences for a youthful squad and its leaders, co-captains Giselle Hernandez and Hailey McKee, Nelson said.

“It’s really a teaching moment to show them where they should position themselves better to stop so many shots on goal,” Nelson said.

Even those with experience are starting anew. Co-cap-

tain Hernandez is a first-year goalie after playing defense last year. Last year’s starting keeper Carla Beltran did not turn out for soccer this year.

“Giselle stepped right in and took it upon her shoulders to do the best she can,” Nelson said. “No complaints, no excuses, she just walked right in the goal and put on the gloves.”

Hernandez was the de facto backup goalie last year.

Against Chelan, co-captain McKee also had to play farther upfield than she was used to, Nelson said.

The team has six returning players from 2015, so many girls, not just Hernandez, are learning new positions.

The team chemistry is good so far, Nelson said, finding different ways to come together as a team and lifting one another even after heavy losses like the one against Warden.

“That’s what we saw when we first got together,” Nelson said. “They have this grit, this intestinal fortitude to not give in. And I think that’s what is going to make this season a really successful one.”

Tiger time: Quincy Football preps for Battle of the Basin

But Quincy football player Jerry Hodges will say it: Having friends in the Ephrata team, “is awesome.”

“Between plays, we chill and we talk to each other like we are best friends, but then when the play is on, we try to hurt each other pretty bad,” he said. ““But in a fun way.”

The fun hurt, if there’s such a thing, begins in earnest at 7 p.m. Friday at Jaycee Stadium, when neighbors Quincy and Ephrata meet for more than just bragging rights in

this year’s Battle of the Basin.

With Ellensburg and Prosser at 2-0 in league and playing each other, a win against the Tigers would leave Quincy at 2-1 and within sight of at least fourth place in the CWAC. The other 2-0 team is Othello, which plays Toppenish.

The Wildcats beat the Tigers 55-18 on the road last week.

The Tigers remain winless after three games, but no one in green is taking them lightly.

Practice this week has been a lot more serious than normal, Hodges said.

Hayden Reynolds is a sophomore, but at the same time he’s an old hand at this rivalry business. Ephrata, he said, has been the team to beat since his Grid Kid days.

beat them,” Reynolds said.

For Quincy, a win against Ephrata would return the team to the W column after losing to defending state champs Prosser 62-0 on the road.

“We are doing pretty good, but we are a little banged up,” said Wade Petersen, head coach of the Jacks. “We are trying to get guys ready to play.”

The Jacks will be without Kyle Mills, starting defensive end and tackle, and he’s one of a handful of players nursing injuries. The team might use its third center this season against the Tigers.

“We are really thin at our linemen spot,” Petersen said.

“Ninety percent of volleyball is eye work,” he said.

“You see it first and then react to what you see as opposed to being a robot and reacting after they have made the play. If you see it first, you are able to maneuver to it, and it takes all the pressure off.”

The lack of trust is solved through communcation, Pratt said.

The Lady Jacks play Grandview Thursday on their last non-league match. The CWAC regular season starts next Tuesday.

Nevertheless, Pratt said his team fought hard. Furthermore, battles like these reinforce what he has believed all along.

“We can play with anybody we have seen so far,” he said.

“If we take care of us, that’s the most important thing. If we can take care of what we do, we can play with anybody.”

The time off allowed the team to recover from the Ultimook, the grueling mud-andwater meet in Tillamook, Ore, a first for the Jacks.

Public Notices REQUEST FOR STATEMENTS OF QUALIFICATIONS CITY OF QUINCY COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER/GYM The City of Quincy is requesting statements of qualifications and performance information from qualified firms interested in providing professional Architectural and Engineering services for a proposed Recreation Center/Gym for community activities and programs. Services will include design for the building and all other necessary upgrades to the park as per codes and requirements and construction cost estimate.

The level of competition, the fact that they were far from home and camping added to the nerves, but those same girls ended up having a blast, Martinez said.

“Everyone is kind of scared of the mud until you do it,” he said. The river was no little creek, either, it took about 40 seconds to cross.

The team walked the course before the race, emphasizing attention to their footing. Now the team knows what it is like and will be better prepared for next year, he said.

It wasn’t all business, either. The team spent about an hour at the beach, hiked Multnomah Falls and had a zombie game in the dark after the race. All these experiences make a team grow tighter, he said.

“It was a great team bonding experience,” he said. “Just to see the kids have the con-

The benefits of this trip will pay off in the long run as well.

“I hope that in future years, it gives them a reason to come into the season in shape,” he said. “They will know that two weeks in we are driving to Oregon to run this crazy race, so in August they have to be running on their own before we are even a team.”

The runners have already asked whether they are coming back next year. Martinez thanked the school district and QHS administrators for supporting the idea of this year’s trip in the first place.

Next up for the team is a much shorter jaunt, to Ellensburg, home of the league’s meet this Thursday.
