Missoula Children’s Theatre to perform at PAC

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA sports@qvpr.com The Missoula Children’s Theatre production of “Aladdin” comes to the Quincy High School Performing Arts Center this weekend, with a cast that includes several local child actors.

The performance, scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., is only one of the activities the MCT has scheduled in its visit to the area.

On Tuesday, they visited Monument Elementary School and did several scenes of the Story of John Henry, the Steel-Driving Man with handfuls of students.

Students shook off nerves and the stares of their peers to play along and follow the instructions from two people, MCT’s co-coordinatorsDarby Alice Bixler and Joey Hedrick.

The performances saw students whom teachers say lean toward the shy side stand up and participate, a big smile plastered on their face.

“We incorporate them into our stories,” Bixler said, “And we give them in-

structions. They don’t feel so self-conscious when we give them something to do.

It’s harder when they have to come up with something on their own, but this they like a little more.”

On Wednesday, they returned to Monument to conduct workshops for students and on Thursday, they held workshops for teachers.

The children's workshops involved 15-30 students and taught them how to create a character, the basics of acting and the basics of theatre makeup. You can’t teach a kindergartner the same thing you teach a fifth-grader, the co-coordinator of the workshops said, but the older the child is, the deeper you can go in teaching acting concepts.

“They are all art-related exercises,” said Bixler. The purpose of the exercises is to instill self-confidence and patience in the students, and how to play or perform well with their peers or, in this case, fellow actors on stage.

The teacher's workshops taught the staff at MES games they could incorporate into their different areas of study, Bixler said.

casting calls for Quincy students wanting to participate in “Aladdin.” Some of these students attend Monument Elementary, and some attend other schools, including Quincy High School and Quincy Junior High School.

Asked how difficult it is to mix local talent into a production that has never seen them act before, Hedrick said it’s fairly easy.

“A lot of the work is done before we get here,” he said.

“The presenting organization will send notifications to parents and kids about what’s coming up.” In this visit’s case, the organization behind the visit was Quincy Valley Allied Arts, which sponsored the visit of the renowned theatre troupe to Monument Elementary.

“By the time we get here, we see who shows up,” Hedrick said. “Our show can accommodate anywhere from 20 to 60 kids, and we work with what we get.”

Bixler agreed, “The more the merrier.”

Tickets for “Aladdin” are $5 at the door. The show is for the whole family, Bixler said, with a few jokes thrown in for the grown-ups.

Trip to Kyrgyzstan has Quincy connection

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA sports@qvpr.com It began with a pair of shoes.

Quincy teacher Gulzat Perry got wind of a delegation of dignitaries traveling to Kyrgyzstan this summer, her native land, and asked them if they could take a pair of shoes to her mother.

“When I found out they were going, I just offered if they would like to stop by and have a little break at my parents’ house,” Perry said.

Randy Smith, Chelan County Public Utility District commissioner, obliged, and on his fourth trip to the former Soviet republic, he found himself having tea with Perry’s mom and dad in their home in the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan.

That region is known for its lake, the second-largest alpine lake in the world, and its apples, hence the connection also with Chelan County. The trip, Smith said, served to officially begin a sister-region relationship between Issyk-Kul and Chelan County.The visit to Perry’s home lasted but a few hours, but it also served to deliver a pair of shoes, and to have some yummy tea and bread.

Tea, Smith says, is a big deal in Kyrgyzstan. It’s a social occasion as much as a meal.

“Tea is a very special event.

It takes about two hours, it’s a full meal, with all kinds of food and a very special engagement with the family,” Smith said. “It’s really an honor to be invited to tea.”

Tea in Kyrgyzstan is not like tea in London, set by tradition at 5 p.m. Tea in Kyrgyzstan happens when you want it to happen. In this trip, Smith had tea in the mid-morning, early afternoon and late afternoon.

“At 9 o’clock in the morning we walk in to a table full of breads and jellies and fruit, all kinds of different foods, and a very hearty soup with noodles and meat,” Smith said, calling the food “phenomenal.”

The Kyrgyz people are famously welcoming and hospitable, Smith said.

“All in our group said that we in our country could learn something about their graciousness in hosting people from other countries,” he said, adding that Perry’s parents were no exception in terms of hospitality, Smith said.

Perry agreed. The Kyrgyz open their doors to many people, she said, and that’s why she didn’t think having her parents open their door to 10 strangers and a box of shoes would be a problem. And she was right.

Nothing on that table surprised Smith, he knew what everything was. He did, however, relish the chance to try

the Kyrgyz bread once again.

“Their deep-fried bread is just absolutely marvelous,” he said. Perry first connected with Smith in Wenatchee about a year ago, he said, after a presentation on Kyrgyzstan.

Connecting with Perry’s parents required a translator, but the American delegation and their gracious hosts hit it off anyway.

The same could be said of Chelan County and the Issyk-Kul region, Smith said, noting that the ties between the two regions have deepened.

“There’s an energy and a desire to create a deeper connection with Kyrgyzstan,” he said, adding that more cultural and student exchanges may occur in the future.

For starters, the delegation this year witnessed the World Nomad Games, a competition of sports and games native to Central Asia. The exchange also happened on a more basic level.

Smith returned to Wenatchee with a package from Perry’s parents, meant for their daughter.

“I have no idea what it is,” Smith quipped, adding that he hoped to connect with Perry once again to deliver the gifts from her parents.

“They opened their homes and their hearts,” Smith said.

“It’s been a marvelous experience.”

Recognition wall gets boost from Sabey

BY SEBASTIAN MORAGA sports@qvpr.com What’s in a name? Well, some long-overdue recognition for starters.

Second, said Mark Owens of the VFW Post 24 in Quincy, changing the name of the wall on F st S.E. honoring veterans with ties to Quincy from the memorial wall to the recognition wall gives those veterans who are still alive the chance to be recognized alongside their comrades who have died.

“The problem was people thought they had to die before they got on the wall, it being a memorial wall,” Owens said.

“And so we figured that if we change the name, they will understand that it’s a recognition wall.”

Sabey Data Centers donated a little more than $12,000 to make sure the wall welcomes as many names as possible.

Veterans don’t have to be born in Quincy to earn a spot on the wall, just have ties to the town. Either you studied here, lived here, worked here

or have family and/or friends here, Owens said. A friend of his from Virginia Beach is on the wall, he said.

Having fought in a war is not a requirement either, just having worn the uniform is enough.

“Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines during wartime, National Guard and reserves,” Veterans of the United States Marine Corps are also included, Owens added later.

The goal, Owens said, is to get everyone from the area who was a veteran. Getting their information takes time, especially if Owens gets it done the way he wants: Not just a name, but their branch of the service and where they saw combat. Each wall fits 121 plaques.

“Every once in a while I see flowers there,” Owens said.

“People stop and leave them.

Makes you feel good.”

“Right now, if I can’t get some more people to show up to meetings and become officers, we are going to fold,” he said. “VFW, we got 239 members, and I can’t get five of ‘em to a meeting.”

Many of them have gotten older or moved out of the area, Owens said. Nevertheless, without five members, there’s no quorum. Without a

quorum, there’s no meeting.

And without meetings, there can’t be a chapter.

“We got money in the bank and people who need help and we can’t help them because we don’t have enough people to OK spending our money,” he said, adding that he has tried, to no avail, to get younger veterans to join.

“I don’t blame ‘em,” Owens, a Vietnam veteran, said.

“It took me 30 years to join.”

the three Pacific Coast states expected to total 550,00 tons, 5 percent above last year.

Washington’s other pear production is placed at 200,000 tons, also unchanged from last month and a record for the state.

California and Oregon expect to harvest 18,000 and 140,000 tons respectively. The combined Pacific Coast production is placed at 358,000 tons, compared with 357,000 tons last year.

BY RICH ELFERS Guest columnist That is one of the big things I miss about my time on the city council. Politics is experiencing human nature in the raw, with no niceties to hide the real intentions of those who wish to gain advantage from political participation.

After being on a city council for four years, I gained a great deal of understanding about the mechanics of running a government. Barack Obama, before he became President, wrote in his book, “Audacity of Hope,” that the amount of knowledge required to make legislative decisions was like drinking water from a fire hose. It took me nearly one-and-a-half years to understand what goes on in government.

People who come before the council sometimes have self-serving motives. One time, a woman argued why her organization needed money from the city. It was obvious to me and the rest of the council that she was lying, but we said nothing since to call the woman out would only

have angered her organization and embarrassed her.

On three occasions, business people and a government official came before one of the city committees that I served on, trying to pressure us to give them special treatment.

They insulted and threatened to try to get their way. They failed. No legislative body likes to be bullied.

One mayor during my time in office tried to control the council by only feeding them information that supported his point of view, leaving out vital facts that would have changed the council’s opinion. All the mayor accomplished was to create distrust and suspicion among the council. After trust is lost, a mayor finds it very difficult to accomplish any goals.

Another time, it was discovered that the city administration had remodeled one of the city shops without notifying the council of the large expenditures, a violation of city code. When confronted with this information by a member of the council, both the mayor and the administrator said, “We cannot remember.” This

is the legal way to avoid a direct lie.

Once, two council members colluded with each other to set up the mayor, who sought reelection, to react to a situation in an emotional way, so that what the mayor said could be used against her in the next election.

The mayor saw the plot developing and instead of being caught, she turned the attack around on the council members. I was impressed with the skill the mayor exhibited in parrying their attack.

Once, before I got on the council, the city had spent several thousands of dollars on a study about the condition of city streets. The expert testified before the council that the best approach for streets is to keep them maintained before they degrade too far.

The longer the city waited to fix the streets, the higher the cost would be. That meant spending money each year to maintain them—in other words, thinking short-term rather than long-term. I was shocked to see that the study was put on a shelf and ignored.

It is only recently, nearly eight years later, that the council acted to raise taxes to increase funding for street maintenance. The council is currently looking into a bond issue to fund the streets and bring them up to standards that should have been done years before. Politicians often procrastinate rather than have to make difficult decisions that will make them unpopular with some sector of the voting electorate.

In politics, one can see our nature expressed openly with greed, selfishness, and often stupidity. This behavior is real. It is authentic. Politics cuts away the veneer and shows us as we really are.

Our nature can also be expressed with intelligence, a sense of stewardship, and courage to do what is best for all. However we express our human nature, I prefer the unvarnished truth to falsehood.

That is one of the major things I miss about no longer being a public servant.  Rich Elfers is a professor at Green River College.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

During my 16 years as Superior Court Judge, Governor Inslee’s appointee, David Estudillo, did not appear before me for any purpose.

More importantly, he never appeared before any of the other Superior Court judges, Sperline, Antosz and Knodell, either.

A trial lawyer will appear a number of times before the court for various reasons in preparation for trial.

Estudillo had no trial experience here before his appointment. Those are the facts.

It is difficult to track down Estudillo’s history.

I understand when he left law school he came to Moses Lake for a period of time and then left to practice emigration law in Seattle.

He has been back in Moses Lake for few years but his practice never took him to Grant County Superior Court.

He has not appeared in Grant County Superior Court either before or after he returned from Seattle.

Governor Inslee should not decide who our Judges should be. That should be our choice.

He understands the law.

His decisions are fair and well thought out. He has no problem making tough decisions.

His personal story of working his way from stocking shelves at his parent’s grocery store to attending the University of Washington Law School is inspiring.

It is apparent that these humble roots keep him humble on and off the bench.

He is a public servant that truly lives and embraces his campaign slogan: Faith, Family, Hard Work, Education and Community—Eastern Washington Values.

Dear Editor, There is no doubt in my mind that our community must continue to have an

emergency room as well as a lab and a radiology department.

Over the years we have been fortunate in Quincy when there have been accidents people could be stabilized, examined, X-rayed and then sent on to Wenatchee, if necessary.

I attended an information meeting about the hospital levy that will be on the November ballot.

I was reminded that this is a levy for only one year because the hospital district is only permitted to run a levy one year at a time.

It was also pointed out that for a $200,000 house the cost would be only $62 per one year, that is, 31 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation.

This is a very small price to ensure that we have an emergency room staffed here in Quincy with the necessary equipment.

Dear Editor: After hearing and reading a lot of misinformation about the race between Judge David Estudillo and his challenger, Nick Wallace, I feel compelled to set the record straight regarding two issues: campaign financing and judicial experience.

According to Wallace,

Judge Estudillo’s campaign funds come largely from western Washington.

This is absolutely false.

According to Public Disclosure Commission records, 41 percent of Judge Estudillo’s campaign funds come from donors residing in eastern Washington.

Another 35 percent comes from Judge Estudillo and his immediate family.

Another 9 percent comes from organizations with eastern Washington members.

Another 6 percent comes from his fellow judges. That leaves only 8 percent that comes from donors residing in western Washington.

This is hardly the “majority” as breathlessly claimed by Wallace.

Mr. Wallace’s campaign slogan is “Experience Matters.” I wholeheartedly agree.

That is why I am supporting Judge Estudillo.

Mr. Wallace’s “judicial experience” is not as a judge, but as a court commissioner.

A court commissioner has very limited authority and discretion.

They cannot preside over jury trials and their rulings are subject to revision by Superior Court judges like Judge Estudillo.

Mr. Wallace’s experience as a court commissioner is not extensive.

According to Grant County records, over the last ten years Mr. Wallace has worked an average of one partial day per month.

This is certainly not the “part-time judge.” status he deceptively claims.

They recorded a total of 92,348 hours (that’s more than 5.5 million minutes) — surpassing last summer’s 75,726 hours.

“The summer reading program is a great antidote to the summer slide, when children tend to lose reading skills,” said NCRL Executive Director Dan Howard. “Kids that read over the summer perform better when school resumes in the fall.”

“The books, the amazing prizes like bikes and iPads, and the free programs make our summer reading program a fun and effective way to inspire reading among our children,” Howard added.

In addition to promoting reading, NCRL’s 30 branch libraries in Chelan, Douglas, Grant, Okanogan and Ferry counties offered nearly 900 free programs, including story times in English and Spanish, arts and crafts, puppet shows, science experiments, theatrical productions, children’s yoga and Knights of Veritas demonstrations.

Soap Lake readers fueled the increase in reading hours, logging 2,687 more hours this summer than in 2015. They were followed by Grand Coulee readers, who tallied 2,262 more hours this year. In Quincy, 387 signed up and logged 5,337 hours of reading, a 609-hour increase over last summer.

Also of note, Wenatchee Public Library had the highest number of kids who read at least 10 hours — 495; and every child who signed up for the program at the new Curlew Library clocked at least 10 hours of reading.

The Quincy branch of the North Central Regional Library system will host film and literature historian Lance Rhoades and his Speakers’ Bureau presentation “Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: Anatomy of a Masterpiece.” The presentation speaks about how Shelley’s legendary character “seves as a vivid allegory in debates about technology, slavery and universal suffrage.”

OBITUARIES Karen Jennie Rosenberger Karen Jennie Rosenberger, 65, passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer on Sept. 16, 2016, at her home in Sequim with her family and very close friend, Jim, by her side. Karen was born in Culver City, Calif. to Henry and Lena Rosenberger on Oct. 10, 1950.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2016 Karen graduated with High Honors from Eastmont High School in 1969. She lettered in her favorite sport, tennis.

Moving on to Western Washington State College, she received a degree in education.

Karen decided not to pursue teaching, rather taking a civil service position in 1972 with the U.S. Air Force Plant Representative Office (AFPRO) at Boeing Plant 2, Seattle. She began as a Procurement Clerk with the Minuteman Missile Program. She subsequently completed training and received her warrant as an Administrative Contracting Officer (ACO). Karen was ACO for the Minuteman program for a short time and in 1984 she became ACO for the E-3 Sentry, Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS). She was responsible for administering the U.S. Government contracts for the USAF, NATO, Saudi and Japanese AWACS programs.

During her time in this position, she was awarded numerous awards and citations for her work performance. Karen frequently travelled internationally representing the U.S. Air Force. The AFPRO later became part of the Defense Contract Management Agency, from which Karen retired on Oct. 4, 2002.

During her time at the Boeing facility, Karen met and married Lt. Col. Jack Pierson (USAF/Retired), who was also working at the Boeing plant.

After retirement she and Jack moved to the Sequim area, building their retirement place on 20 acres of land up on Blue Mountain. After Jack’s untimely death, Karen sold the house and moved down the mountain to her new home in Sequim. Oh, how she loved her new home.

She made many trips over the mountains back to Quincy to see her family. We always looked forward to spending time with Karen. Karen was a huge supporter of many local events and artists in the Sequim area.

They attended Super Bowl XLIX and that result really upset her. She always flew a Seahawks flag at her home during the season. Karen was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Lena Rosenberger; her husband Jack H. Pierson; her brother Jim Rosenberger of Rock Island; her niece Gwen Taylor and nephew Mark Rosenberger of Quincy.

Quincy man killed in motorcycle accident

BY DEE RIGGS World staff writer BURLINGTON — A 65-year-old Quincy man died Saturday in a motorcycle accident about four miles north of Burlington on Interstate 5.

William R. Higgins lost control of his motorcycle as he was traveling northbound on I-5 about 8:55 p.m., according to a State Patrol report. Then, he was struck by an oncoming, northbound van.

No one in the van was injured. The van was driven by Mark S. Swaagstra, 35, of Vancouver, British Columbia. The accident happened at 8:55 p.m.

Higgins was a teacher at Royal City High School. Royal City School District Superintendent Roger Trail said Higgins taught English and physical education, where he was a long-term substitute teacher.

He said Higgins had a good rapport with his students and “he will be deeply missed by many people on our staff.” He said grief counselors were on site Monday morning to help staff and students.

Battle-tested: Jacks rally to beat Tigers

In front of a packed house and with regional TV cameras watching, the Quincy Jacks returned the Battle of the Basin trophy to the green-andgold faithful with a 17-10 win over Ephrata.

The Jacks reversed a 10-0 Ephrata lead, with a stubborn Tiger squad playing far better than its 0-3 record led some to believe it would.

With eight minutes left in the first quarter, Ephrata intercepted Cade Schutzmann, on his first game as the starting quarterback for the Jacks.

Kaden Murphy, the starting signal-caller at the beginning of the season, started the Battle of the Basin as a receiver, although his throwing arm would come in handy later.

Ephrata took advantage of the pick on the first Quincy drive, putting three points on the board near the end of the first quarter.

Ephrata continued to set the pace well into the second quarter, adding a touchdown to its lead with two minutes left in the first half. Ephrata’s first two drives ate up most of the first half’s possession time.

Just when Quincy fans feared that the Jacks would go into the halftime break on the wrong end of a first-half shutout, the Jacks struck. A pass to Travis Harris took the

Jacks to the Ephrata 23-yard line.

Two plays later, with 59 seconds left, Pablo Mariscal took the ball to the two-yard line. On the next play, Schutzmann dialed his own number and scored. The point-after left matters 10-7 for Ephrata.

In the second half, Ephrata had a chance to extend its lead but a field goal attempt fell short with 5:28 left in the third quarter.

From then on Quincy took steady control of the action and grabbed the lead with a masterful play that combined Schutzmann, Murphy and Harris.

Schutzmann delivered a lateral to Murphy, who then unloaded 48 yards downfield to Harris, who drove it in for the TD with a minute left in the third quarter.

Ahead 14-10 late in the fourth quarter, Quincy took one last risk, forfeiting a Jacks’ field goal for a roughing-the-kicker penalty on Ephrata.

The penalty negated three Quincy points, but it gave the Jacks good field position to try for another TD, and more importantly, it gave them another set of plays to drain time off the clock.

Kevin Rios nailed the field goal, bringing the score back to 17-10 and left Ephrata with less than a minute and a half left in the game clock for them See Battle on page 12

“It was a great experience, it’s my first year as a Quincy Jackrabbit,” said Schutzmann, whose dad just took over as principal at George Elementary. “It was a really hard-fought battle but in the end we came out victorious.”

Schutzmann said the move of Murphy to receiver sought to give Quincy more weapons against opponents.

Pablo Mariscal agreed.

“Kaden’s got wheels,” he said.

Schutzmann praised the way his team fixed mistakes after a slow start.

“We came out not getting our blitzes right,” Schutzmann added about the slow start by the Jacks. “But once we adjusted and figured things out , we took it to them.”

Kicker Kevin Rios, a senior, had never beaten Ephrata, and he had waited a long time.

“It’s my last year playing against them, and it’s the last year for a lot of my friends, too,” he said. “It’s a great win because we are making history.”

With former longtime athletic director Bill Alexander wiping away tears and joking that the trick plays he used disqualified coach Wade Petersen from attending church on Sunday, the celebration extended long after the game was over.

“It feels good that I can trust my teammates on ev-

erything,” Mariscal said. “It’s something amazing that has just has happened, winning it and enjoying it with my teammates.”

Petersen praised his team’s ability to make adjustments, especially the new guy under center.

“He’s a real cool customer,” Petersen said of Schutzmann.

“He doesn’t get shaken. He had a great game.”

Unlike many of the folks at Jaycee Stadium, including a certain newcomer from Montana, he wasn’t hanging on to the fact that it had been years since Ephrata had lost to Quincy. What matters, he said, is that Quincy won this one.

“Couldn’t be more proud of our guys,” said Petersen, a first-year coach.
