2021 SUMMER PROGRAMS Aquatics At Lincoln Hancock Community Pool Under the supervision of American Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors and Lifeguards, the Quincy Recreation Department sponsors Instructional and Recreational Aquatics Programs for all ages year-round. The American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program is conducted daily Monday through Friday in July and August for Quincy residents ages 6 to 18. Participants must register for classes in advance and are assigned times according to swimming ability. Children must be at least six years old when lessons begin. Lessons are free for Quincy residents who have a Membership Card. A variety of full year memberships are available which include Adult, Family, Youth, and Senior citizen. The fees for full year memberships are Youth: $90.00, Senior citizen: $70.00, Adult: $100.00, and Family: $150.00.

Family memberships include two adults and all children in the family ages 6 to 18. The pool is handicapped accessible and has a lift and stairs for entry into the pool. The Quincy Recreation Department is an American Red Cross Licensed Training Provider.

There will be two sessions of the Learn-to-Swim Program during the summer of 2021. Participants may register for one session only. Session 1 runs Monday, June 28 to Tuesday, July 20. Session 2 runs Thursday, July 22 to Thursday, August 12. Classes for American Red Cross Level I/II, III, IV, and V/VI will be taught between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and are half-hour or hour long depending upon the level. Children must be at least six years old when lessons begin. Lifeguard Training will also be offered at various times throughout the year. Registration for Session 1 and Session 2 will be held on Wednesday, June 16 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. under the Pageant Field pavilion. Registration is limited and will continue as long as openings exist.

During the summer, the Recreational Swimming Program will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The pool is open to Quincy residents who obtain a Membership Card issued by the Recreation Department.

Playground Program

2021 SUMMER PROGRAMS

Neighborhood playgrounds are supervised by Quincy Recreation Staff from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. during June, July and August. Free registration will take place beginning Monday, June 28th, 2021 at each location. The Program will continue Monday through Friday until Thursday, August 12th. There will be no Program on July 5th. Registration is ongoing throughout the summer.

Supervised activities are for Quincy residents ages six through sixteen and include: active games and sports for individuals and teams, arts and crafts, and a variety of special events. Teams are formed from each playground in basketball, soccer, and baseball for boys and girls in three age groups: Midget age 8-9, Juniors age 10-12, and Seniors age 13-16. Each playground location is equipped with a bulletin board which will display weekly schedules and important announcemments.

2021 Supervised Playground Program Locations: Beechwood Knoll Playground, Bishop Field, Clifford Marshall, Faxon Park, Fenno Street Playground, Forbes Hill Field, Fore River Field and Playground, Heron Road, Kincaide Playground, LaBreque Field, Mass Fields Playground, O’Rourke Park, Perkins Field, Parker/ Cavanaugh Field, Snug Harbor School Playground/ Palmer Field, Squantum/ Wendell Moses Field, Welcome Young Playground, Wollaston Field. Playground Locations are subject to change check website for most up-to-date information.

Playground Specialists- Playground specialists visit select playgrounds on a regular weekly schedule. Any playground that does not have the facilities to conduct special activities is invited to visit the nearest site. In this case, programs are held at the largest playground in the immediate area. Local Recreation Leaders on your neighborhood playground will have the information regarding the specialists.

Archery- Fundamental instruction from beginner to advanced. Equipment provided by trained Sports Specialists. Check with a Leader on each playground for a day and time.

Arts and Crafts- Weekly projects are delivered to each playground and are started by our Arts and Crafts Specialists and then are completed by our Recreation Leaders. Gimp, Animal Masks, Friendship Bracelets and Tie-Dye are only a few of many creative projects. Check with a Leader on each playground for day and time.

Sports Clinics- The Department will offer various clinics providing instruction for different sports with guest speakers sometimes available. Times and locations of each clinic will be available at the neighborhood playgrounds.

Citywide Events- The Department conducts various citywide tournaments and field trips for boys and girls who participate regularly in the supervised playground activities. Frisbee, Street Hockey, 6 on 6 Soccer, Basketball Hotshots, Whiffle Ball and 3 on 3 Basketball are just a few of these funfilled tournaments. Teams will also play Ultimate Frisbee, Basketball, Softball and Kickball.

William F. Ryan Boathouse Boating & Sailing Program

2021 SUMMER PROGRAMS

For over 60 years instructors from the Quincy Recreation Department have taught the skills of rowing, sailing, kayaking and canoeing to Quincy residents of all ages.

The program is located in scenic Merrymount Park on Black’s Creek in a salt water lagoon ideally suited for teaching boating and sailing. Instruction is offered daily for children age 8 and above who are able to pass a prerequisite swim test. The core youth program is weekdays from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Classes are conducted in July and August. The Boating and Sailing Program offers instruction for all levels from beginner boaters through advanced boaters.

In addition, adults can take advantage of their leisure schedule to take the whole family sailing. The adult and family schedule is Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 noon to 5:30 p.m. This program is designed so that the entire family may participate and develop boating skills and enjoy valuable family time on the waters of Quincy. Adults interested in boating and sailing lessons may inquire at the Boathouse for individual lessons and appointment availability.

Summer 2021 registration will begin online on Monday June 14th; and will continue daily as long as class openings exist. Classes begin on Monday, June 28th and end on Wednesday, August 11th. Children who vacation during the summer are also welcome to enroll. The registration fees for Boating and Sailing are: Youth Membership Fee $60.00; Family Membership fee $110.00. Adult Sailing fee is $40.00. A one-day pass for recreational use of the kayaks, canoes and paddleboards is available for $20.00. This fee may be applied to a seasonal membership on the day of use.

The prerequisite swim tests will be held at the Lincoln Hancock Pool from June 28th to July 2nd between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

2021 SUMMER PROGRAMS Happy Acres Program For Children with Special Needs Located at Pageant Field in the William F. Ryan Recreation Area, Happy Acres is a municipally sponsered summer program for youths with mental and physical disabilities.

Happy Acres offers a wide variety of activties that includes crafting, boating, swimming, nature studies, sports, and field trips. Under the supervision of trained and experienced staff, each child is encouraged to compete and learn in accordance with their own level of skills and abilities. The staff is augmented by a number of young adult volunteers. With the direction and guidance from regular staff, these teenage volunteers help enable each participant to have one-on-one supervision in many games and activities.

Prevention First & Teamwork

2021 SUMMER PROGRAMS

The Quincy Recreation Department is excited to partner with the Office of the Mayor and the Substance Abuse Prevention Office to run the Prevention First Program. This program is intended for children entering grades 6 through 9 in the fall. Under supervision of the Recreation Staff, children will have the opportunity to gather in a safe space to participate in many activities and to hang out with friends.

The Teamwork Program will pair Quincy Police Officers with Recreation Staff at Kincaide, Clifford Marshall, and Welcome Young Field on weekday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Supervised activities for Quincy Reidents ages six and over include: active games and sports, arts and crafts, and a variety of special events. A drop-in volleyball program will also be offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This program is funded by the Charles E. Shannon, Jr. Community Saftey Initiative Grant.

Clinics Leader-In-Training

Too young for a part-time job, but too old to be a camper? Get a head start on developing important job skills during an active session of learning teamwork and leadership skills.

Quincy Recreation will be offering a Leaders-in-Training (L.I.T.) program for Quincy residents who are entering grades 9 and 10 in the fall of 2021.

This program is designed for those who are ready to take on fresh challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities. L.I.T. Program participants will develop important life skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and communication in a setting that is both supervised and supportive.

The Leaders-In-Training program will provide teens with training and hands-on experience with day-to-day activities at popular Quincy Recreation summer programs, under the supervision of Recreation Staff.

While L.I.T.’s are not staff members, they will be treated with the utmost respect and will have a Performance Evaluation weekly. Please note that participation in this L.I.T. program does NOT guarantee being hired as a staff member.
