Portrait of a yoked sweater Growing up, round-yoke sweaters were all I knew. My grandmother knitted them for everyone in the family.

For the most part, they were worsted weight (knittin’ woostered, as she says) with a simple two-color chart worked across the yoke. If she chose to get fancy and use, say, three colors in the chart or an additional pattern worked at the waist and cuffs, it must have been a special occasion!

I still have the sweater she knitted for me when I was a teenager, an oversize pullover in white and teal tweed. And last year she made my son, her great-grandson, a nautical-theme pullover with sailboats and anchors around the yoke. It took me right back to my childhood.

So I was led to create my own collection of round-yoke sweaters, one with the modern knitter in mind. If you’re accustomed to knitting raglan sweaters, I hope Yoked will serve as an introduction to a different construction method, that of circular yokes from the top down. And, if you aren’t already familiar with color work, these patterns will introduce you to some of its possibilities.

Once again, I was inspired by Quince & Co’s color palette, especially the soft colors in their wool/alpaca blend, Owl. Their vintage feel was a natural fit for this little collection. On top of that, our model, Kaye, had just the right look.

I love these sweaters, I love the palette—this raglan knitter has fallen in love with yoked sweaters!

Owl is a sweetie We’re delighted that Hannah wanted to work up her latest collection entirely in Owl, our newest yarn. Owl is a light-worsted, two-ply yarn that knits up plush and pretty. Owl is a good choice for color work. It’s smooth in the skein. But wash it and it blooms. You can see its halo quite nicely in Hannah’s Chevron Pullover, page 24. That soft fuzziness fills in gaps between stitches when changing colors and its stickiness evens out uneven tension.

Unlike many an alpaca blend, Owl is light and buoyant because we spin it in a woolen mill, a spinning method that keeps a lot of air between the fibers. Owl is spun from white wool and naturally colored alpaca. It comes in 6 natural shades and 13 overdyed colors.

Best of all, we think, Owl is made from American wool and—tada!—American alpaca.
