trong and graceful. That’s how I would describe Paulina Popiolek’s shawls. When it comes to borders and body patterns, she has an eye for pleasing combinations.

Take Holt (opposite), for example, in which a variation of the traditional feather-and-fan pattern meets garter stitch.

Knitted from a narrow point to opposite long side, it’s simple and satisfying to knit. And, in Owl, so cozy to wear.

Butterfly (pages 16-19) mixes small motifs, rows of faggot stitch, and smooth stockinette in a half-circle. The shawl is shaped along two spokes to sit nicely over the shoulders.

Breaking Waves (pages 6-9) also uses garter stitch with a border, this time in a crescent shape. The border and body are worked at the same time, no picking up stitches to worry about.

Finally, Palmetto (pages 10-13) is a whisper of delicate lace and garter stitch. It’s worked in Piper, a wool/mohair blend that simply floats when knitted up.

Shawls delight us around here. We love that they always fit, no matter your gauge. And we love that Paulina’s pieces offer the pleasure of stitch patterns that sometimes require attention along with the comfort of plain stitches that allow us to rest a little while our fingers move along.

paulina popiolek My passion for knitting stems from a very young age. From the beginning, I would experiment with different stitches and shapes. My interest in knitting slowly evolved into designing.

Although trained in the science of nutrition, my fascination with design eventually found an outlet when Ravelry came into existence. What once was a hobby has turned into a profession. My patterns are now published on Ravelry and other publications and hard copies are available in selected yarn shops.

I live in Surrey, United Kingdom, with my very patient husband and two cats.
