THE EMPTY STREETS OF ANTIGUA

It was as if a gas attack had occurred. Overnight, the bustling sidewalks full of visitors and locals alike, the endless stream of cars and tuk-tuks, the sound of everyday life just vanished into thin air! Lockdown had begun…

How wrong we were! Today, as you walk through the hustle and bustle of Antigua or curse as you strive to find a parking place, these images transport us back to a time when many of us thought that Antigua would never be the same.

Many thanks to Ricky Lopez and Juancho Galich ( juancho.galich.imagine), two of Guatemala’s leading photographers who with their press passes were able to document this once in a generation episode. Ricky Lopez’s coffee table book, “Guatemala Inédita”, (Guatemala Unpublished) has many more remarkable photos shot throughout Guatemala during this time. Call 5528-8556 to order your copy.

FERMENTO ONE WITHOUT, TWO WITH 15th of March 2019, we were celebrating our very first anniversary when our dear Prez came on national TV to tell the country we were shutting everything down. Everything. Many of us thought it was going to be a matter of a week or two and then everything would be back to normal. “They” would never allow the whole world to shut down for more than that…right? We laugh about it now but for any single business in the service industry to still be open today is a minor miracle. In the beginning the uncertainty was palpable and terrifying. No savings, still carrying debt, still growing pains, not fully established, living day to day. It was Semana Santa season and the sun was out but it was pretty much the only thing that came out. That and street dogs. Saturday afternoon in Semana Santa and not one soul in the street. Maybe a delivery motorbike and the end of the street every now and then. It was a scene from a bizarre sci fi movie. In our case, we just pretended we were not done even though there were no customers. There was still gas in the tank and food in the fridge. My position was that nobody from my staff was being let go and that we would survive this together, which we did. My job was mainly to be here to prop my staff up, cheer them up and give them some hope, even when I myself wasn’t certain if tomorrow we were going to be able to serve a burger again. Debt was piling up. We would be having lunch at the bar facing the street and we would see another pickup truck full of restaurant equipment on its way out, and all of us in silent were wondering when it was going to be our turn to pack everything. At least there was always a plate of warm food 18

for us every day. We kept going with what we had and got creative in whatever ways we could. I guess that was part of the minor miracle to be here today. Some people didn’t like those creative ways but we had to do what we had to do to survive. C’ est la vie. The Pandemic brought out the best and the worst in people. Some relationships were unfortunately lost. I guess the Pandemic accelerated what was going to happen eventually. Fortunately, other friendships were reinforced too. That was the other part of the minor miracle. There are a few names that quickly come to mind that I know without them and their divine intervention Fermento would not be open today. And those Angels keep showing up. We must be doing something right. Things have somewhat returned to something similar to how it was before and it’s a breath of fresh air. The uncertainty is no longer there. To all of my fellow restaurant and bar owners who are still here, I salute you. If I survived one year without Pandemic and two with… we will all make it. As you can imagine, starting a business during a pandemic is not for the faint-hearted. But then again there are opportunities as more and more people want to spend their free time in the open air. With this in mind, El Azote Beer Garden was born in August 2020, first with the rental of a couple of bicycles, then the sale of some beers and finally a food option, located in the stunning Finca Azotea just 5 minutes from the centre of Antigua. Since then, El Azote BG has become one of Antigua’s most popular places to visit. It now has more than 80 craft beers and a selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails to enjoy. Try their freshly prepared breakfasts and lunches. Highly recommended are pizzas, the German sausages, hot dogs and pretzels as well as the very popular ceviche. Other options include chicken wings, hamburgers and vegetarian dishes. Couples and families can easily spend a full day at El Azote BG as there is so much to do. It’s also pet friendly! As well as renting a bicycle, you can visit three museums including

For those who just want to relax, you can take it easy in a hammock and for those who want to work in a peaceful place, El Azote BG offers free high-speed internet. Finally, you can listen to live music every weekend and watch a film on the big screen. And, coming soon to el Azote Beer Garden will be an amazing climbing wall- Fun for all the family! A New Ambience In Antigua

Cerveceria Catorce opened its doors outside Cuidad Vieja with the idea to bring world-class products and service to Guatemala. In the few years since its inception the demand for more outlets has brought the brand to the center of Antigua with El Deposito, Zone 4 with 14grados, and coming soon to El Paredon, Playa Catorce Beach Club. Each new project is unique to its location and is executed by the Catorce project manager and Head of Development Fares Perez.

El Bosque de Antigua Cerveza

El Deposito has become a staple in the center of Antigua for live music and the best craft beer in town. The open area seating is reminiscent of a German beer garden with delicious food served by our friends and neighbors at Hector’s Bistro. The newly renovated Library Bar inside El Deposito is the perfect place to spend time working or socializing with your favorite people. Live music five nights a week by the area’s best artists creates the perfect atmosphere conveniently located in the center of Antigua.

El Bosque de Antigua Cerveza, originally a coffee farm and still active as such, gave rise to a dream born from the desire to be able to share an outdoor space surrounded by 4 blocks of forest in the centre of Antigua Guatemala, just 3 blocks from the church of La Merced. Making this experience even better, you get to experience it with a glass of fresh beer, bonfires, and live music.

14grados located just outside the pedestrian street of Zone 4 in Guatemala City opened in 2021 as a Catorce taproom with food by the genius Peter Meng of Sal.gt offering the best handmade charcuterie in all of the Americas. Akin to all affiliated Catorce projects, 14grados boasts live music from local and international acts five nights a week. As a satellite bar to the main brewery, you can always find the freshest Catorce flagship beers as well as the seasonal specialities.

Surrounded by the forest you find the restaurants - La Cosecha and Chermol to accompany your beer. So how about a pizza? Or an Argentinian grill?

El Bosque continues to offer the best of Antigua Cerveza. With more than 7 styles of beer, merchandise, beer to go, food, and much more for you to discover.

Pottery from Topis, and thematic gardens for you to live an experience full of life, flavours, art and music.

As the Catorce brand continues to grow and serve as the premier craft beer in the region our team continues to work diligently to raise the bar for quality and customer service. In the words of our project manager and Head of Development Fares Perez, “With each new location, our philosophy is simple, create a space where we would enjoy spending time. Live music, great service, unique food, and the best beer. We design bars here in Guatemala that would thrive anywhere in the world. It is a pleasure bringing this to the market of my home country and we will never stop innovating and raising the bar as we continue to expand.

A space not only to eat and enjoy fresh beer, but also a space where you are able to create lifelong memories, create moments, design dreams and start making them a reality. If you like to work outdoors, with good music and let’s not say... That real craft beer is just what you need... Wi-Fi, food, beer, coffee and good music, make this place your new office. And don’t forget to introduce us to your pet. That’s right! El Bosque de Antigua Cerveza is pet friendly with everything you’ll need for your pet to also have a great time! The huge painting Ecce Homo, one of a series of eleven representing the Passion of Christ is one of the greatest creations of the Guatemalan artist Tomás de Merlo painted during the colonial era. I’m mentioning the gift shop, not only as it has some pretty interesting gift ideas but because much of the profits go directly to the Obras Sociales de Hermano Pedro, providing healthcare for those that live at or below the poverty line. Discover Antigua’s Museums and Galleries - Part 1

The National Museum of Art of Guatemala (MUNAG) If you’ve only got a day to spend in Antigua, then add to your bucket list a visit to The National Museum of Art Guatemala. Situated in the Palacio de Los Capitanes Generales to the south side of Central Park, the museum charts 3000 years of cultural heritage, from prehispanic, through to colonial and finally to republican eras. It’s the first museum in Guatemala to offer free audio phones both in Spanish and English to make it a really interesting experience. 26

Of the many exhibits to see, the incredible wood carvings Dintel II from the Temple III of Tikal are pretty awesome. Also, the burial offerings of King K’utz Chman at the Tak’alik Ab’aj Archaeological Park in El Asintal, Retalhuleu, are considered the most important archaeological find of the Mayan civilization and the oldest discovered to date in Mesoamerica. 34

Jade Museum at Jade Maya The Jade Museum at Jade Maya is well worth a visit. If you’re lucky you may be given the free tour by Mary Lou Ridinger, Guatemala’s leading jade archaeologist. In 1975, In partnership with her late husband Jay Ridinger, they discovered three distinct sources for jadeite in the Motagua River valley of Guatemala, and also discovered tools and other indications that pre-Columbian Maya artisans had worked the material at the source site. During the talk, you will learn the history of jade which goes back 3500 years to the Mayas, the 25 natural colours that make Guatemalan jade so unique. Displays of Maya jade funeral masks and jewellery are shown and described. You then go through and visit the Linda Schele Museum. She was an American Mesoamerica American archaeologist who was an expert in the field of Maya epigraphy and iconography She played an invaluable role in the decipherment of much of the Maya Hieroglyphs. You will see the Guatemalan jade timeline and see examples of hieroglyph translations. Finally, you will be able to spend time in the jade workshop and see modern-day techniques in cutting and polishing jade.

Where pizza meets Pacaya Above Antigua on the hill of the cross, known in Spanish as Cerro de la Cruz, I can see illuminated to the south, Agua, the most massive volcano in Central America. Between us, the whole of La Antigua is spread quietly across the valley. While Volcan Agua has been dormant for at least 10,000 years, it hides from Antigua to the Southeast, its smaller and very active cousin, Pacaya. As recently as 2021, in fact, fresh rivers of red-hot lava covered its slopes then cooled to a curiously inviting crust. So inviting, in fact, that locals welcome visitors with paths across the jagged landscape, a small artisan’s hut and even a destination ‘restaurant’, Pacaya Pizza, where chef David Garcia crafts lava roasted Italian pies. While visiting the lava fields is an easy 1–2-hour hike, we chose to navigate the trail by horseback and weave a little romance into the adventure. One can rent a horse at the trail head for Q100, but we reserved a romance ride with Guatemalan Horse Tours. Manual picked us up in Antigua for the 1-hour drive around Volcan Agua. We donned cowboy hats, mounted sure-footed steeds and ascended the winding path. A naturalist guide pointed out edible plants, we held the gigantic larva of the rhinoceros beetle and he even found us samples of a rare gold colored lava. As the air cooled, we made our way by foot through the lava field to our volcano-warmed blankets and pillows. As we watched David craft pizza dough and toppings, Manual mashed fresh guacamole and opening a bottle of cabernet sauvignon. Later, as the setting sun silhouetted the volcanos towering to our west and high clouds glinted with red and orange, we roasted gourmet marshmallows in the heat of Pacaya and watched Volcan Fuego shoot glowing lava and ash into the sky. Don’t say cheers.

Say SKÅL As you may well know, the Vikings first settled in Guatemala way back, even before Game of Thrones in the late 8th century. Today, you will find some of those ancestors, and even maybe a Latino Viking relaxing at SKÅL, enjoying a beer or two (or even maybe ten), clinking glasses and toasting each other with the Nordic word for cheers-SKÅL. The Danish owners and staff take their food seriously. At SKÅL. you’ll find fine authentic traditional Danish dishes; recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. Try plates such as the succulent pork loin sandwich or the rich and hearty boiled potatoes and gravy. Or perhaps the bacon-wrapped meatloaf, Danish pork meatballs or even the pork loin with crackling. It’s just like grandmothers cooking! Another traditional Danish dish on the menu is a selection of tartletters. They are puff pastry tartlets filled with fillings such as shrimp and Asparagus. Their homemade dill and cream cheese yellow lemon zest and asparagus tartletter is a total winner. It’s even topped with a lovely spoon of Danish caviar! For something lighter, try an open-faced sandwich or as the Danish call them, Smørrebrød. Perhaps the Atlantic harvest salmon with homemade remoulade or the Danish style liver paté served with homemade pickled beets on locally sourced fresh rye bread. Enjoy your drinks and meal inside at the bar, seated under the two warm fireplaces or outside in the delightful courtyard. You’ll always receive a friendly greeting in Central America’s only Danish bar and restaurant! SKÅL Antigua 4a Calle Oriente #14a CC. Osteria Di Francesco - Authentic Italian cuisine in Antigua If you’re looking for authentic Italian cuisine in Antigua, then check out the Osteria Di Francesco. Over the years, it’s become a magnet for the Italian community in Guatemala- they know and appreciate good home-cooked Italian food! Francesco Naso, owner and chef was born in Calabria in the south of Italy. In the 1990’s he travelled to Guatemala and opened restaurants in Guatemala City. But Francesco always wanted to live in beautiful Antigua and so opened Osteria Di Francisco here in 2013. Now located on the leafy Alameda el Calvario, one of Antigua’s most picturesque avenues, you’ll be sure of a warm welcome. You can dine on the terrace, the garden, the lounge or in one of the six dining rooms. Or perhaps outside in the front and pretend to be Italian and watch the people go by!

goat’s cheese Caprese and an antipasto Calabrese amongst many other options. Pasta is a very popular choice. For instance pasta Alfredo, penne al chorizo, Carbonara, and pulpo al cognac. Also, very popular for diners and take out are the pizzas. The choice is huge, but consider the Al Funghi Porcini, Siciliana and the Pizza Francesco. Highlights of the main courses are the Tagliata Toscana and the Scaloppine al Funghi. If you’ve still got room for dessert, then consider the Semifreddo, the Panna Cotta or the Tiramisú. Finally, it’s good to mention that Osteria Di Francesco is petfriendly, great for families, and has easy parking.

Ana, Francesco’s partner told me that they take pride that all the cheese, ham and olive oil are imported directly from Italy. Osteria Di Francesco specialises in seafood. Mouthwatering options include Frutti di Mare, lobster, octopus, and pasta vongole. For starters, you can choose from various carpaccio, a

A Story Of Old AndArt New Selina No trip to Antigua is complete without a meal at Meson Panza Verde as it’s well renowned for its fine cuisine and romantic ambience. Dine in the elegant Main Sala with its vaulted ceiling, amid fine wines and original paintings. Its reputation for “International Cuisine with a Twist” has made it a favourite for Guatemalans and international travellers alike. If you prefer, you can choose to be served on the corridor surrounding the main garden, on the terrace in a romantic candle filled setting for two in the Cupula or in La Cueva, where live music is performed Thursday through Saturday evenings (Check our calendar to see what’s on). MAGIC IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE SYNCHRONY IS PRESENTED We started with a dream, an illusion really, with very little control over the outside world. Many moments were laced with confusion, uncertainty and our burning passion to bring our dreams to reality. This constant uncertainty gave away, and we realized that our possibilities were endless. Recreating an Italian atmosphere on a Patio in Antigua Guatemala; ensuring that our clients can immerse all their senses at once as they visit our little Tuscan town right here in Antigua, with the contrast of a beautiful and giant Avocado Tree in the heart of the Courtyard.

special cuts of meat such as Tagliata and Bisteca Fiorentina to do up on the grill just the way you like them. Also, don’t forget our marvellous specialty Fetuccini ai Frutti di mare as well as salads. Visiting us will leave you wondering what your everyday routine was as you fully enjoy this time that completely feeds all your senses.

It all started during the hard days of 2020, when the streets were silent and the cars were stowed away - covered in dust, life became so fragile, fleeting, and unsafe. It was in these moments that the simple took on importance; walking lightly was necessary, and the most valuable thing was the passing of every second and using them constructively.

We know that to dream you must feed your mind and heart, that’s why we invite you to trust what we put on your table and you take care of surrounding it with friends and family.

This chaos gave rise to a high demand for private moments in open corners, it awakened a special taste for simple things and interrupted our consumerism, natural light and fresh air was a privileged option, and was no longer underestimated.

We are fortunate to have been able to rebuild and recreate this beautiful place on one of Antigua’s most vibrant streets, where art shows and private events take place al fresco each day.

In the midst of all this change, our senses sharpened, and we found the direction that this new space needed to fill. A place that many didn’t even know to look for, and we understood the opportunity. “Nothing lasts, nothing is complete, and nothing is perfect” For this reason, on the Patio de la Primera you can enjoy the elegant beauty of humble simplicity and the understanding that the passage of time is what causes the natural deterioration of elements - being for us a source of inspiration and desire to return to the essential. Today, the relaxed nature of the Patio de la Primera and the melancholy of the materials were revealed in its restoration, the purest and most primitive elements being wood, adobe and stone that call to a past time, uncovering emotional memories, as well as speciality dishes - such as Grandma Blanquita’s recipe and her fresh sweet corn cake, delicately baked to achieve an explosion of unforgettable flavor. In its details, the Patio reveals and encourages your senses, hoping to attract your attention through colors and subtle textures that would have previously gone unnoticed. The patterns that form naturally in the herb garden which grows and flourishes in harmony with the music that artists present every night, between applause and toasts to life. Here you can enjoy live music from Thursday to Monday, different artists accompany us with guitars, drums and melodies. A place for groups of friends who enjoy a table of cured cheeses and aged salami, a bottle of wine or exquisite cocktails lit by candlelight and lots of human warmth. You will find an environment that speaks of the romance of a garden with fresh basil, sweet aromas and bright colors that have inspired our cuisine, using ingredients that tell a fresh story. Their colors are an essential part, while each flavor

compliments each dish achieving a cultural connection and revealing the Mediterranean tradition. Take a step out of our little Tuscany and step onto our beautiful terrace where you can see the volcanoes and domes in the middle of the valley of Antigua while enjoying a remarkable glass of basil pineapple ice cream.

Nothing was by chance, everything was waiting for its moment... to be, and the desire coincided with the opportunity... today we invite you to the best moments al Fresco.

This is an invitation to you - to see between the lines, to appreciate the details, taste the sounds and savour the smells that we put into each dish seasoned with aromatic herbs. While with us you will also find fresh burrata, sweet prosciutto and fine cuts of grilled vegetables. We open at 8 am, the coolest time of the morning to enjoy a cup of highaltitude coffee served with special care accompanying your delicious breakfast, fruit yoghurt and the best granola. We are waiting for you with a variety of pizzas, homemade pasta and

Old School Pizza In Antigua

Growing up in the Boston suburbs, Greg started working at 16. His first job was in a historic ice cream parlor called Brigmans. At the age of 18, he joined the US Army and served in the War with Iraq. Upon his return, he left the military and got a job working at an exclusive country club in Nashville, Tennessee. There he found a love of the culinary arts. It was while he was attending Johnson and Wales Culinary School in Providence Rhode Island, he started working in a famous pizzeria, Fellini. Providence is a very Italian city and the pizza served within the community is classic New York style or Neapolitan. Large pizzas with robust sauce, exotic toppings and bountiful flavors. After years of working in several restaurants, Greg rejoined the Army. He served in Bosnia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan. He moved to Seattle Washington, where he found a community of people who grew up in the North East Coast, and had the same love of New York style pizza. He befriended several pizzeria owners and shared his experience of learning pizza in Providence. Greg retired from the US Army in 2015 with a goal to travel the world on his motorcycle. It was when he was passing through Guatemala, that his life changed again when he met his wife Luisa. Settling down in Antigua, Greg decided that there has to be a better pizzeria here in Antigua, and he would be the one to make it happen. He contacted his old mentor Paul, from Fellini after working for him 30 years ago. It was a special reunion. They had several conversations, and in the end, Greg would bring the famous Fellini style pizza to Antigua. Designing his pizzeria from his memories of all the good places he loved, and a timeless 80’s theme, his pizzeria is not only a great place to grab a slice, but to play a classic arcade game and listen to fun music.

El Cazador Italiano Wine Bar And Pizzeria

Are you confused by the ad on the left-hand page? Well, let me explain. The man from the mountains, Luciano Tarabini, owner and chef of El Cazador Italiano Wine Bar And Pizzeria has been in deep contemplation these past two years! “It’s for everyone” he has been heard whispering and sometimes shouting. Over a small glass of Brunello, one of more than thirty wines that he imports from his native Italy, he stares at me madly, eyes blazing, screaming “It’s now for everyone! It’s the Cazador 0.2!” The Cazador 0.2, in its new central location, has a more relaxed feel. Now you can watch your favourite live soccer games with your friends at the long bar in the afternoons. But you can be assured that Cazador 0.2 has the same excellent food and service that you have been accustomed to. “I eat; therefore, I exist.” Luciano Tarabini’s existentialist view of cuisine and perhaps life itself is everpresent! For something really special, Luciano Tarabini himself hosts VIP private dinners here in Antigua. However, maybe that’s not for everyone! Call for more information. And check out El Cazador Italiano Deli- It’s a real Italian emporium. You’ll find the store stocked with the best in Italian wines, cheese, hams, salamis, sauces, olives and so much more all sourced by the tireless Luciano Tarabini. Various bread and focaccia as well as cornetto (the delicious Italian version of croissant) are baked daily on the premises.

SHECAS

Xela (or `Xelajú) is located in mountainous valley in the western highlands. It is also one of several places in West Guatemala that produces a local bread know as shecas. Some of the ingredients that are mixed into the dough include cinnamon, brown sugar, honey and aniseed. Apart from giving the bread a particular flavor they also infuse it with a unique aroma. Although traditionally a sheca is round in shape and darkish in color (with a little ball on top), nowadays you can find a wide variety of shecas - varied in both shape and color- depending on the ingredients that are added to them. Some ingredients thet have been added to the traditional bread include cheese, jam and refried beans. 56

We love plantains! Some of the most well-known desserts in Guatemala are prepared around one specific ingredient, full of flavour and fantastic nutritional properties: plantains. Considered a tropical fruit, one of the most cultivated and important, speaking in global terms, plantains are grown by small and medium producers in the country. Its quality is recognised worldwide and very much appreciated in the culinary world. Fried plantains are a constant in Guatemalan’s homes, most of the times accompanied by fried beans. If you add sugar, cinnamon and a tiny bit of cream, you have prepared “Plátanos en Gloria” (something that mixes glory and plantains, but trust me, you have to try them for the wordplay to make sense).

If you thought beans and chocolate aren’t good together, then you need to try the famous “rellenitos” (which can be translated into little stuffed bits). Rellenitos are small, round shaped and fried, made out of pureed plantains and filled with a mix of chocolate and black beans. We do know this entire recipe sounds exotic, but you need to trust us on this one, they taste really, really good. In La Merced, La Escuela de Cristo and El Calvario, you’ll find a hot beverage (usually after 5 PM) called “atol de plátano”, which is the result of boiled plantains, water, sugar and cinnamon) and “plátanos en mole” (mostly in La Merced) which are the same fried plantains Guatemalans make at home, but this time coated with a mix of chocolate and chilies, topped with toasted sesame seeds. Whatever you decide to try, we’re sure one of Guatemala’s plantain-based dishes is going to capture your heart, and stomach! Written and photos by Sofia Letona

Hidden Markets of Antigua Every time someone asks me “Where can I buy traditional Guatemalan…?” or “Which is the best place to buy…?“. I usually think of Antigua’s three biggest markets: The Artisans Market, Antigua’s Municipal Market and Nim Po’t. You know, the usual places tourists flock to buy authentic Guatemalan fabrics, textiles, paintings and handicrafts. But Antigua has so much more to offer. The smaller markets -that seem to be hidden away and a lot of tourists don’t get to see- offer just as much if not more.

and only open once a week, on Mondays, this is an excellent place to find all your beadwork and bags at an exceptional price. That is the beauty of Antigua, every time you walk through a doorway, there is a wonderland waiting on the other side full of treasures. So don’t walk past, stop for a moment and walk through that door and discover what awaits you. Then next time a tourist asks: “Where’s the best place to buy…?”, you may surprise yourself by giving them an entirely new answer.

One example is the market at El Carmen ruins, or Mercado el Carmen. On the weekends, it is a bustling hive of activity with wares literally spilling out onto the streets, for all to see and busloads of tourists visit. But during the week, it seems to withdraw and hide so people walk right by and are unaware of the wonder to be found inside. Another example is a little known market where you can shop like a local, because this is where the street vendors buy their goods and then sell to the tourists as they walk the streets of Antigua. A market with no name, it can be found across the road from the main carpark, behind Antigua’s Municipal Market; on Calle de Los Recoletos. Tucked away 74

In 1999 Mesón Panza Verde opened the doors of a space designated for art. Surprising with its versatility, presenting and supporting works by renowned Guatemalan artists, as well as internationally recognized artists. Panza Verde Gallery has had exhibitions of great artists such as Luis González Palma, Julio Zadik and Daniel Chauche. Demonstrating support for most artists, they showcase pieces decorating various spaces such as the rooms, hallways and restaurant. It is a place frequented by design lovers; they like to keep remodeling different areas of the facilities to renew and give a fresh touch. Maintaining the decoration style with an exact mix between art and antiques. Generally, there is an art opening the first Friday of the month where you can meet the artist and a glass of wine. Tulipanes Hospital Guatemala’s First Cleft Lip Hospital For The Poor

Tulipanes is the very first cleft lip hospital in Guatemala that is making comprehensive care accessible to poor families who can’t afford private hospitals. A hospital that not only performs surgeries, but also provides all preand postoperative care. By having their own facility, Tess Unlimited foundation is no longer dependent on other hospitals. Where previously the organization could provide life-changing surgery to about 200-300 children per year, it is expected that at Tulipanes hospital, between 500-600 surgeries can be performed annually.

The Tulipanes hospital offers a “Home Away From Home”. Children with cleft lip and palate often undergo multiple surgeries and treatments from a young age, which can be very scary. Rather than coming to the clinic in fear, the foundation strives to welcome them with open arms and a smile. The many details, cheerful colours and playful murals make the clinic very child-friendly and home-feeling. This is the place where everyone will walk through with a smile. And, where many, many smiles will only become more beautiful. A real “Happy Hospital’!

In addition to performing surgeries, the hospital also cares for children for longer periods of time (when necessary). Local dentists and orthodontists provide their services and the hospital offers opportunities to train local professionals. Goal is to make the foundation’s working methods as sustainable as possible.

Tess Unlimited has been helping children born with cleft lip and palate in Guatemala since 2008. Until recently, the foundation has operated in several partner hospitals throughout Guatemala. In 2014, founder Tessa de Goede started dreaming about building her own cleft lip and palate hospital. Many enthusiastic conversations followed but knowing it would be a big project, she mostly just kept dreaming. By the end of 2016, this dream started to take shape when Tessa’s brother Tom wondered why they didn’t turn their current office building into a hospital. At the time, the foundation’s office was located in a beautiful building in San Gaspar Vivar, a small village just outside La Antigua Guatemala. Speech therapy sessions and patient evaluations were held here, among other things. At first, the property seemed a little too small, but the more they thought about it, the more it seemed like a good idea. In 2017, the foundation started working with a medical architect. He was shown around the location and became enthusiastic immediately. This could be turned into a hospital! Drawings were requested and an extensive project plan was drawn up. The search for funds could now begin, which was not easy. Two years later, the funds had been raised and the building permit was ready. Now, the real work could begin! The office was moved to the building next door and construction was completed at the end of 2020. The new hospital was painted and decorated with lots of love and attention to detail and on March 5, 2022, Tulipanes hospital was officially inaugurated. A dream came true! 80

If Something Goes Wrong Most visitors to Antigua have an enjoyable, memorable, and safe time. However, it’s always good to know what to do if something goes wrong. If you only remember one thing from this article let it be 1500. That’s the 24-hour hotline to the Guatemalan Tourist Office (INGUAT). Their service is completely free, and they speak English! Importantly, they have a designated English-speaking person in Antigua who oversees emergency help 24 hours a day.

Apparently, they have an English-speaking officer there every day between 8 AM till 8 PM. After 8 PM, I would contact INGUAT for help coordinating with the Tourist Police. They can also assist with consular matters, especially emergency passports. Thanks to Abraham Martinez, Angel Quiñonez and Ronny Castellanos for their help in writing this article.

For instance, they can help with medical emergencies- From arranging the logistics to get you stabilised in a private medical centre to transportation to a private hospital in Guatemala City (If you’ve got insurance) or if not to the National Hospital. In the unlikely event of being robbed, then you will need to head to the Tourist Police. It’s important to have a police report made so you can make a claim on your insurance. 92
