Rebecca Lloyd-Jones: Between Structures
Friday 2 August 2024 : Ian Hanger Recital Hall
Between Structures composed for solo percussion and electronics, evokes vulnerabilities, intimacies, and ambivalences centred on disorienting temporal perceptions. Inspired by Audre Lorde’s vision of intersectionality, Between Structures delves into the liminal spaces where different identities and experiences converge, exploring transitions, audibility, and psychoacoustic phenomena to reflect the complexity and interconnectedness of human experience.
Consisting of five sections, each section originates from a single sound source and gradually develops acoustically and through live signal processing. These sections—Vibraphone, Triangle, Tam-Tam, Cymbals, and Bass Drum—reward the persistence of both the listener and the performer, with each section reflecting the interplay of different sonic identities and experiences, inviting listeners to explore the nuanced spaces where sound, identity, and perception intersect.
Between Structures, composed and performed by Rebecca Lloyd-Jones, was released in July 2024 on the Los Angeles-based experimental music label Populist Records. It was recorded and mastered by Samuel Pankhurst at Poverty Castles Studio in Meanjin, Australia, in November 2023, funded by the Creative Arts Research Institute.
