Report for today: warm, misty and overcast, with a chance of some chill Brazilian bossa breezes and musing daydreams. Some strong currents and swells. Please swim between the red and yellow flags and enjoy your day! E R I K A J O H N S O N

Magnitude is a work for solo piano which explores the use of graphic scoring and metric improvisation to create a thundering, unstable timbre. Taking full advantage of the grand piano’s extensive range and register, it aims to highlight contrasts between violent and peaceful tempers, while affording the pianist freedom to embody that nature within their own formation of the melody. This piece alternates between chromatic and modal harmonies, which work to parallel their corresponding textures through shifts in complexity and dissonance.

A meditation and guided improvisation over this beautiful Psalm.
Psalm 27: 4-6
"The one thing I ask of the Lord the thing I seek most is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in His Temple. For He will conceal me there when troubles come; He will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock. Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me. At His sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music." R U S S E L L D U N N E T T

Softly, softly, hung the moon in the dead of night.
I clasped the bamboo carver’s hands, ‘Til a chilly breeze held my eyes.
From the doorstep’s cradle, my loved ones arrived –And two with warmth, respect, and malaise.
They gathered ‘round with lowly gazes.
I couldn’t bear witness, and turned away, reeling. So rested I, ‘neath the canopy’s sprawl, With wounds that knew no pain or healing.

The starling shrieked and the silence shattered, We sighed though endless lamentations.
The carver was carved by Heaven above, Surrounded not by his creations, but his relations.
And the floating sun dawned its mighty blaze –Turning ever higher, higher… louder, louder.
