Welcome to our Summer Season Welcome to a great season of shows, exhibitions, talks, workshops and lots more. Whatever your tastes there should be something for you – from Shakespeare to Tim Brooke-Taylor, from Oddsocks to Kathryn Tickell. Festivals play a big part in our summer season and we’re looking forward to the Hexham Book Festival in April, the Hexham Gathering in May (sponsored by Red Hot Property) and the Wide Skies Film Festival in June. We also have monthly film screenings, this season featuring classic comedy with Blazing Saddles, celebrating Mel Brooke’s special BAFTA award, and Airplane, awarded Empire’s “greatest comedy of all time”. On a more serious note we are pleased to be hosting a special screening of I, Daniel Blake on 27 April in support of the West End Food Bank. We are thrilled to let you know that Arts Council England are currently match funding income we raise from donations, grants and sponsorship. This has helped us attract a number of new funders. Recently The Wellesley Trust, via The Community Foundation, have awarded us a grant to establish an autism specific youth theatre and Beales Department Store will be supporting us with fundraising activities throughout the year, including an Easter Raffle for the chance to win some delicious treats. And, of course, every pound you donate with a ticket purchase gets doubled up to help us bring you great arts experiences now, and in the future. So, a big Thank you from all of us at Queen’s Hall Arts. Geof Keys Artistic Director | Queen’s Hall Arts

Burton Saturday 24 June 8.00pm In the Green Room

June

IZE BITES MA DRA

Burton vividly presents the life of the great Welsh actor in his own words from humble beginnings to Hollywood mega-stardom. Beautiful women (not least Liz Taylor), alcohol, wealth, stage and screen are the threads woven into this sad, happy, exuberant often hilarious one-man show. Drink was the only real release to his deteriorating health and mental state, his doomed tempestuous relationship with Taylor and his constant guilt over the abandonment of his family. Written by Gwynne Edwards, directed by Gareth Armstrong and performed by Rhodri Miles (Game of Thrones, Eastern Promises), Burton was the winner of ‘Best International Show’ at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2010. Running time: 70 minutes - no interval Tickets: £12.50 (BITESIZE inc food & a drink from Little Angel Cafe) £7.50 (Play Only)

Featuring 50 black and white photographic prints, this is a rare opportunity to encounter an artist widely regarded as one of the most important photographers to emerge from Africa in the last sixty years. Utilising both street and studio photography, Ojeikere has fastidiously documented the many different fashions and nuanced meanings of his subject matter. These ever-evolving designs symbolised key life events such as weddings or birthdays, and often denoted social status. Artsmark for Northumberland Schools Queen’s Hall Arts offers a number of ways for young people (up to 25 years) to become involved in the arts and achieve an Arts Award qualification at Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver or Gold level. We are interested in working in partnership with more schools, youth groups and other groups of young people to support and enhance opportunities for young people to develop as artists and arts leaders. Please contact us to discuss how we might work with you. Our Arts Award offer includes opportunities to: • take part in the arts • enjoy and appreciate the arts • meet arts professionals • access progression routes

Artsmark can help unlock the potential of children and young people, help to develop character and talent, and increase their knowledge and understanding. That’s why Artsmark was created: to bring this ambition to life in every classroom. Awarded by Arts Council England and designed by schools, the new Artsmark award will help schools to deliver a high quality arts and cultural education, and provides an excellent way to demonstrate this. If your school is interested in finding out more and applying for Artsmark, please contact Amanda Gould at QHA.

Creative Age Queen’s Hall Arts is involved in a three-year programme of arts projects aimed at older people which has been made possible by funding from the Kellett Fund, through the Community Foundation. Groups will have the opportunity to take part in taster sessions across a range of arts and crafts processes, leading to larger projects over time which link with their local communities. If you are part of an art or craft group, – or would like to start a new one – and would like to know more, please contact Susan Priestley at QHA.

26

Queen’s Hall Arts is delighted to be working in partnership with Culture Bridge North East and Northumberland National Park to deliver a new Artsmark programme for schools in 2017.

For further details about these projects or our outreach work please contact the QHA Engagement and Development Team of Amanda Gould & Susan Priestley on 01670 624513
