John Cusack and Paul Dano give voice to Brian Wilson’s broken soul.

Love & Mercy presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter and leader of The Beach Boys. Set against the era-defining catalogue of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon whose success came at extraordinary personal cost.

Paul Dano and John Cusack portray the former Beach Boys singer during two troubled periods of his life. The narrative unfolds across two timelines at once: the sixties, in the aftermath of the Beach Boys’ first wave of fame, when an emotionally disturbed Wilson breaks away from the group to craft more adventurous sounds; and his more perilous state some two decades later, when he’s forced into the dictatorial care of therapist Eugene Landy (Paul Giamatti).

Paul Dano and John Cusack both do sterling work as the two halves of this broken soul, drawing us in and making us care about the man behind the star, so that when we do finally get a chance to see the real Brian Wilson at the end of the film, singing “Love & Mercy” live, it is thrilling and almost overwhelmingly beautiful.

The 6.30pm screening on Wed 29 July will be an Access screening with audio description and on-screen captioning.

Robert Carlyle makes his directorial debut with this delightful jet-black comedy about a downtrodden barber whose mundane life is turned upside down when he accidentally turns killer.

Carlyle also plays the lead role as mild-mannered Barney Thomson, an old-fashioned barber who is slipping down the pecking order in the Glasgow barber shop where he works.

After an accidental killing, he turns to his hilariously fierce mother (a quite wonderful Emma Thompson) for help.

With a supporting role for Greta Gerwig and cameos from real-life house names, this story of a briefly flaring idyll is a tender, exuberant, musically heady experience that comes across like Flaubert’s Sentimental Education with a Frankie Knuckles remix.

Featuring Bernard Pruvost as the Clouseau-like detective on the case and charismatic young Alane Delhaye as the title prankster, P’tit Quinquin is proof that even an auteur like Bruno Dumont, best known for uncompromising and austere dramas, is capable of shifting gears without conceding his signature.

She begins an affair with her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend (Alexander Skarsgård), which leads to both great joy and serious repercussions. Set in San Francisco in 1976, the film mirrors the graphic novel by featuring beautiful Aline Kominsky/Robert Crumb-like animation sequences.

Filmmaker David Nicholas Wilkinson has spent 33 years trying to prove that the inventor of the moving picture was a Leeds-based Frenchman named Louis Le Prince.

In 1888 Le Prince disappeared under mysterious circumstances, just as he was about to travel to America to demonstrate his revolutionary ‘projection machine’. Using archive footage and expert commentary, Wilkinson presents a convincing case for his contention that the forgotten inventor should finally be accorded due honour.

Followed by a Q&A with director David Nicholas Wilkinson, hosted by film critic and broadcaster Mike Catto.

Age definitely is no barrier in this fascinating, warm and uplifting documentary.

Directed by veteran documentarian Albert Maysles (who died in March this year aged 88), Iris gives us a glimpse into the life and wardrobe of New York style icon and collector Iris Apfel.

More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. 94 years young and still going strong, Iris really is one of a kind.

Banned for many years by the BBFC on the grounds that it ‘…exploited for commercial reasons the…people that it claimed to dignify…’, Tod Browning’s 1932 tale of not-so-ordinary circus folk is now rightly regarded as a classic of shock cinema.

Forcing the audience to reassess their perception of what is normal (and what isn’t), Freaks used real sideshow performers to disturbing and powerful effect.

Martin Scorsese’s pioneering musical portrait of The Band, filmed at their all-star final bow in 1976.

Interspersed with recollections from Robbie Robertson and cohorts, the result seems both spontaneous and seamless as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters and high-steppin’ Van Morrison share the stage with the quintet.
