We all love to be entertained, to enjoy an escape from the realities of everyday life and cinema is, of course, the ultimate form of escapism. At other times we might want to be informed, provoked and stimulated and cinema has just as important a part to play in this – to present a wide range of ideas and make us see the world through fresh eyes. This month we have a decidedly thought-provoking theme with the inaugural Imagine! The Belfast Festival of Politics and Ideas, our ongoing Conversations about Cinema: Impact of Conflict programme and a special screening and discussion to mark International Women’s Day (March 8th) all making an appearance in our programme.

Cinema can play its part, too, in inspiring new ideas and stimulating creativity and we are particularly proud to be presenting PlaySpace, a weekend of creative sessions, discussions and screenings, focussing on the ever-growing computer games industry and how it can interact with film. As well as screenings of gamer classics, Tron and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, there will be opportunities to hear from leading NI games developers, meet other games fans and, of course, play the games themselves (including the chance to play on the cinema screen). PlaySpace is supported by Jameson Irish Whiskey and Arts & Business NI and is presented in association with NI Science Festival and QUB Dragonslayers.

It’s fair to say that fresh ideas are well and truly on display in this month’s new releases, including the terrifying It Follows, giving a new twist to horror, the barking mad but brilliant White God (think Cujo meets Lassie and you are on the right track) and the award-winning Catch Me Daddy, from up-and-coming director Daniel Wolfe. And then, of course, there is the profoundly powerful and moving Still Alice, starring the (rightly) Oscar nominated Julianne Moore.

Finally, if it’s inspiration you are after, you can’t do better than to check out this year’s BAFTA Nominated Shorts (including, of course, NI’s own BAFTA winner Boogaloo and Graham).

At age fifty, Alice Howland (Julianne Moore) has it all: a Columbia University linguistics professorship, a devoted husband, and three loving children.

Her life is a whirlwind of work and family, and she thrives on it. But, while lecturing at UCLA, something unexpected happens: mid-sentence, she struggles to find a word.

Though a seemingly innocuous relapse, the incident leads to a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, a stunning realisation that sees the bonds between Alice and her family thoroughly tested.

QFT is screening two films as part of the Russian Speaking Community NI Cultural Festival & Fair 2015: The Barber of Siberia, with its large-scale set pieces and epic sweeps of landscape, and Land of Good Kids, a Russian-language fairytale for all the family.

As Hamas became the dominant political party within the Gaza strip, many misconceptions were dispelled by the strength and success of female representation within the organisation. This documentary follows three Hamas women to try and understand why an Islamist political party, operating in a very conservative society, allows its women to become political, social and even military leaders.

Yann Demange’s vivid and powerful debut feature stars Jack O’Connell (Starred Up) as a young British soldier accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the streets of Belfast in 1971, where he must then attempt to survive the night.

Arch satirist Chris Morris’ 2010 comedy is almost spookily prescient in its depiction of the misadventures of four incompetent British Jihadists as they plot an act of terrorism.

Now, looking back from 2015’s post-ISIS/ Charlie Hebdo perspective, Four Lions makes particularly unnerving viewing – life becomes a tragic imitation of Morris’ comic art.

The Marx Brothers are in fine anarchic fettle in this classic knockabout comedy. A subversive satire on militarism, nationalism and the pomposity of politicians, Duck Soup ruffled plenty of feathers on its 1933 release, with its cynical take on war and international politics at a time when the world was just waking up to the crisis of Nazism.

Why not accompany this classic comedy with a lunchtime bowl of actual soup (probably not duck though), served in the QFT bar from 12.30pm.
