COLLAGE ART

It is a series of 4 pieces puzzled into one large artwork. Single artwork has its meaning and different stories. However, as one piece, it conveys one message about the beauty of the old Saigon in the 60s.

This artwork holds pictures that speak a thousand words. You will travel back in time to the 1960s, where there were still racecourses and theatre troupes hanging in all corners of Saigon. Reminiscing on Saigon’s past, even though the city is very different now, you will also be impressed by the use of neon color tones to highlight the richness of the old Saigon street life.

The first piece tells the story of the background in Saigon during the 60s. The city was known as Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, Saigon Central Post Office, and the street was always crowded with people.

The second piece shows various entertaining activities in the old days like horse races and kid slides,... There were no technologies, there were the only things attracting people and entertaining them. Hippodrome was famous for a while, it was dangerous but fascinated as well. People could get richer or bankrupt at the same time.

The third piece illustrates the specific typography that the old Saigoneers used for billboards or brands on the street. This created an influence on later designs these days in Vietnam. Typography was created manually, and it was the combination between the Western and South-East Asian Design, which was so-called “Indochine” typography.

The last piece of this puzzle is all about the relationship between family and friends. It was shown through some particular activities in Saigon at that time, there were religious and festive activities, “dine-out” cultures, mobile theatres, and pedicabs...

Not Just Art, is our first season of a Vietnamese Digital Magazine Vietnamme Magazine. About this project, there are 3 stories told by objects to describe the idea of Not Just Art. Art is not just “art”, art is also about artists and the public, art is a means of living and art is everywhere.

Artists & The Public There is a relation between the artists and the public that always exists. If the artists were the flowers in a vase, the publicity would be the hard stones. Some stones stay silently and contribute to the artist’s work as courageous or genuine comments, other stones are used to throw into the art as critics and negative reviews. The artists’

mission is collecting the stones to embrace, manage the good and the bad things then release the final statement most flexibly and skillfully. The audiences need to learn to criticize an artwork, and the artists need to consider the public’s idea but still keep their ego in an artwork.

The Dancing Father There was a story of the man dancing on Dien Bien Phu street in Vietnam. People usually called him a crazy man. But the story behind his moves tells differently. He danced to entertain people on the street, make money for his living, and raise his children. He loves music and dancing, he loves art. He carries on his shoulders the tuition fees of his children, receipts of the daily groceries but he still dances. To him, dancing is not just art, dancing is a means to live. The public’s eyes, once again, look down on him, some others look up to him. There are many different opinions, in the end, he reflects on ourselves.

Street Lifestyle Living in Vietnam for about 21 years, we were raised by the Vietnamese street lifestyle. People usually ask where we can find inspiration to create art. I said “Everywhere”. I saw the patterns of the clothes that those street food vendors’ owners wore. I heard the sound of the man selling ice cream in the middle of the afternoon. I smelled the flavor of our specialty meal - Banh mi. They all exist in my life and I use them as my weapons in the art playground. It’s not just art, it’s my weapon.

The Christmas Fool Every Christmas, my parents told me to write a letter for Santa Claus, wish him all the best, and tell him if I were good or naughty and promise him to be better. Then, I would receive Christmas gifts from him. I was naive as a rabbit. I believed there would be Santa Clause until I turned 13. I knew my Santas were my parents. They all created my precious childhood even though my friend told me Santa was unreal.

What is Do Bo?

Do Bo is casual clothes the Vietnamese women wear to markets or stay home. Some opinions criticize the people who wear Do Bo because they think it impolite to wear outside. I did the math, I counted the number of Do Bo from my grandmother’s house to my house (1km), around 30 women were wearing Do Bo at the same time. I realize Do Bo is also our national-specific clothes.

Stay away from those assumptions, I came up with the idea of Restyling Do Bo. Do Bo is not just for elders. Do Bo is not impolite. Do Bo can be style in many different ways. You can be fancy, artistic, cool or even futuristic with Do Bo. Do Bo is for everyone no matter your body size or your gender. Do Bo is comfortable and iconic.

Marimekko is, without doubt, one of the great success stories in the history of 20th-century design.

Founded in 1951 by the visionary textile designer Armi Ratia and her husband Viljo, the company grew from a small textile-printing firm into an international phenomenon and gave Finland a definitive presence on the world fashion stage.

The exuberant colors and accessible cuts of Marimekko clothing as well as the bold patterns of their printed textiles became a national symbol of a new optimism and equality in postwar Finland and introduced a highly original vocabulary to the fields of fashion and home design. Even more than sparking a revolution in printed textiles, Marimekko also introduced a ground-breaking marketing concept, proposing a definition of fashion that embraced the entire home environment and set the precedent for a lifestyle brand.

ARTWORK

Past Life This artwork is a background for my Initial Project. The Project has created a piece of art that represents me when I am at the happiest moment. The size is 44’’ x 20’’ for the Installation Exhibition Showcase. My art should have an art movement or any style of a specific artist, and my art only contains the black, white, and original color of paper according to the criteria. I choose Basquiate - my favorite artist.

This piece is called Past Life including my poems about past events and my feelings at that time. I drew my family and my friends that I left them for Canada.
