2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Friend of Augusta Health, Since 2013, Augusta Health Foundation has provided philanthropic support to enhance the care, treatment and healing of Augusta Health patients. Generous gifts from members of the community, grateful patients and others who believe in the mission of Augusta Health enable the Foundation to make a difference in the lives of patients and employees every day. Giving is personal. For some, it means expressing gratitude for the expert care received, or honoring the memory of a loved one who has passed. Yet, for all of us who support the Foundation, giving is a way to ensure that advanced, lifesaving services are available right here in our community. Whatever the reason, we are grateful for your generosity. As has been our practice since the Foundation’s inception, every penny of every gift goes directly to the programs and services our donors choose to support. One hundred percent of the Foundation’s operating costs are provided by Augusta Health. In 2018, the Foundation completed the Moments Matter Campaign, exceeding our $2 million goal by raising more than $2.13 million to support the expansion of the Emergency Department. In addition, generous gifts to the Foundation provided for end-of-life care for hospice patients, medications for those in our community who are uninsured or underinsured, wigs, prosthetics and dental care for patients receiving cancer treatment, professional development opportunities for Augusta Health nurses, and patient education for those living with ostomies, just to name a few of the things made possible through our donors’ generosity. With every gift, we are able to fulfill Augusta Health’s mission to provide access to excellent care for all – even those who are unable to pay for their care.

Thank you for your support of Augusta Health, our patients and employees. Your gifts will ensure that the people of our region continue to have access to excellent care, close to home. Sincerely, Robin Crowder, EdD Chairman, Augusta Health Foundation Board of Directors

any times, simply saying “thank you” for outstanding care doesn’t seem like enough. That’s why the Augusta Health Foundation has provided opportunities for patients to honor caregivers through the Grateful Patient program. Patients and family members have generously recognized physicians, nurses, and staff for their exemplary care and support. Launched in 2018, the program not only provides gifts to support patient care initiatives funded by the Augusta Health Foundation, but it also helps caregivers and their teams to feel that their work is valued and appreciated. As of June 2019, 38 caregivers and staff have been honored by Foundation staff. Recipients also receive a special thank you note and a recognition pin from Augusta Health leadership.
If you would like to recognize an outstanding caregiver, please visit our website at www.augustahealth.com/foundation or call 540-332-5174.
“Mrs. Peggy Hill and Mr. Greg Aldridge are both excellent nurses and Dr. Raybon is an excellent doctor. All were very nice to me and helpful during my six months of treatment.”

The $24,000 provided by Augusta Health Foundation, along with an additional $10,000 from the Women’s Giving Circle (see sidebar), will not only allow forensic nurses to improve the quality of the images taken during a forensic exam, it will also provide patients a sense of security and support through the uncomfortable prosecution process.
When a patient comes into the Forensic Department after a sexual assault or domestic violence, physicians and nurses at Augusta Health offer the highest level of compassion and skill to help them navigate through the trauma. The Forensics Team at Augusta Health strives to make a very difficult and emotional situation a little less intimidating. “One step that is important in the healing process for these victims is being able to provide patients with documentation that improves their chances of successful prosecution in these cases,” says Renee Pullen, BSN, RN, Coordinator of the Augusta Health Forensic Program. “That can be difficult with the use of standard digital cameras, or even a special camera, called a colposcope, that offers more magnified views. Neither camera is optimal when attempting to see the extent of a person’s injuries.” That’s why Pullen applied for, and received, a grant from the Augusta Health Foundation for the purchase of a specialized camera that takes photos at a higher resolution and uses ultraviolet light that can capture areas of bruising that would not be captured with a regular digital camera. The grant also provided for a photo storage and transmittal system that encrypts the images so they can be sent to law enforcement and authorities in a highly secure way. “Use of the unique light system is particularly important, since bruising isn’t always visible during an exam,” Pullen says. “If a case does go to court, these images will give jurors an idea of the true extent of a person’s injuries and the physical trauma, from a number of different angles.”
Women’s Giving Circle
I
n addition to the grant award from Augusta Health Foundation Board of Directors for a specialized camera and system, the Forensic Department was fortunate to receive even more support from the Women’s Giving Circle. This is not the first time that the Women’s Giving Circle has collectively provided for the Forensics Program, formerly SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner). Following a presentation by Nurse Pullen about the small size of the Emergency Department and the difficulty of maintaining privacy for victims of sexual assault and strangulation, the Circle made a gift of $50,000 for expansion of the new Forensics area as part of the Emergency Department expansion at Augusta Health. These are exactly the kind of community-based, important healthcare needs that the Women’s Giving Circle enthusiastically supports. The group started in 2017 with 20 founding members; it has since grown to 32 members who each pledge $1,000 per year for three years.

AU G U S TA H E A LT H A NNIVERSA RY CELEBR AT ION GA L A
A
quarter of a century of excellence is definitely worth celebrating—especially if that means supporting even more innovation and care for the community and its future. Celebrating 25 years of healthcare for the community was the theme of the Augusta Health Anniversary Gala, held in late April at Veritas Vineyard and Winery in Afton. Proceeds from the event supported digital breast tomosynthesis—also known as 3D mammography—for the early detection of breast cancer (see sidebar). The event was the first of many celebrations for Augusta Health’s anniversary.
CEO Mary Mannix thanked guests for their support of Augusta Health during the past 25 years and shared highlights of the health system’s expanded clinical capabilities over the past five years.
More than 230 people attended the black-tie-optional gala, including Augusta Health Board members, physicians, management team and staff, business leaders, volunteers, donors and patients.
Throughout the evening, guests could bid on numerous silent auction items, including jewelry, professional golf lessons, an original watercolor painting, a personal training package, and a week’s stay at a beachfront condo in Puerta Vallarta.
After a cocktail hour and welcoming remarks by Reverend John Peterson, Chairman of the Augusta Health Board, guests dined on a delicious meal prepared by Veritas Executive Chef Joel Walding. Following dinner,
6
She emphasized the importance of every gift to the Augusta Health Foundation for creating significant, life-changing treatment innovation in areas such as thoracic surgery, cardiac catheterization, and specialty care.
As the evening drew to a close, nearly $100,000 had been raised to support breast cancer prevention. Guests departed feeling inspired about what lies ahead for Augusta Health.
AUGUSTA HEALTH FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2018–2019
ADVANCING WOMEN’S HEALTH WITH 3D MAMMOGRAPHY The average lifetime risk of developing breast cancer for a woman in the United States is 12% or a 1-in-8 chance. If we think about the women in our circle of family, friends, and neighbors it is too easy to identify one that is affected by breast cancer. Considered the most advanced imaging for the detection of breast cancer, 3D provides a clear, more accurate view of breast tissue when compared to regular mammograms. This new technology uses several low-dose X-ray images at different angles, which allows a radiologist to view image “slices” and analyze each one, seeing cancers and abnormalities much sooner than with 2D images. “With this advanced technology, we’re able to find cancer earlier, and when it’s smaller,” said Todd Goodnight, MD, a physician with Blue Ridge Radiologists at Augusta Health. “Also, if a woman has dense breast tissue, she has an increased risk of breast cancer and this same tissue hides the cancer. 3D can be especially helpful in finding abnormalities for those women.” The new 3D tomosynthesis mammography system will provide additional 3D technology in Augusta Health’s Women’s Imaging Center. This means that women in our region will have decreased wait times, less radiation, and the comfort of knowing that they have the most advanced technology for the early detection of breast cancer. “This needed equipment would not be possible without the support of the Augusta Health Foundation,” said Dr. Goodnight.
Guests of the 25th Anniversary Celebration enjoy a night of dinner and dancing.

Gary loved his Pomeranians, Mia and Macho.
G
ary Fletcher grew up in Martinsburg, West Virginia, but some of his deepest connections were forged right here in the Shenandoah Valley. Gary’s formative years were spent in Waynesboro, where he attended Fishburne Military School, making life-long friends in the brotherhood of cadets at the historic military high school. After graduating in 1969, he earned a degree in Business and Finance from Shepherd University. Gary established a career working for the Small Business Administration and the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development in Charleston, West Virginia, retiring in 2006 as a Senior Project Manager. He shared his life with his wife, Bonnie, until she passed in 2011. Five years after Bonnie’s death, Gary was diagnosed with liver cancer. It was at that time that his close friend and fellow Fishburne brother, John Toney, encouraged Gary to move back to the Shenandoah Valley, the area that had provided him with so many life-long friends, memories and attachments. Gary agreed and moved back to Waynesboro in early 2016 and started treatment at Augusta Health’s Cancer Center. Augusta Health provided Gary with life-sustaining treatment and compassionate care as he fought his disease. Shortly after starting treatment at Augusta Health, Gary made the decision to give back to the community where he had established early roots and deep connections by naming the Augusta Health Foundation as a beneficiary of his life estate. Gary wanted to ensure that future cancer patients would be able to receive the same high quality care he found at Augusta Health. His generous donation to the Cancer Center Bridge Fund provides financial assistance to cancer patients at a time when they face both a frightening diagnosis and the related increase in health care expenses. Gary lost his battle with cancer on April 26, 2017, but his legacy lives on in this community that he loved so much. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his love for his friends and for helping others in need. Today, Gary’s bequest continues to provide transportation, nutritional supplements, wigs and expensive medications to cancer patients undergoing treatment.

s a clever take on a baking competition TV show, the Augusta Health Foundation
kicked off its employee campaign with a battle called “Cake Frost” to showcase the best cake-decorating skills and to raise money to support patient services. With 18
teams of employees from 17 departments, no one held back when it came to creativity and competitive spirit—not to mention some sweet fundraising along the way. Using a bakery worth of ingredients—40 sheet cakes, 240 pounds of icing, and a gallon of caramel sauce, just to name a few— the teams whipped up some notable creations. There was even a fondantcovered MRI machine complete with Barbie as a patient undergoing her testing! Employees wore fairy costumes, aprons that looked like Speedos and bikinis, and necklaces made out of play money. They competed for prizes like “Best Team Spirit” and “Best Themed Cake,” along with awards for most pledges collected and most money raised. “This experience fostered teamwork at its finest,” said Dawn Funkhouser, Physician and Advanced Practice Provider Recruiter. “The support and camaraderie among everyone from a multitude of departments and backgrounds encompassed the true feeling of the Augusta Health family.”
S N A P S H O T:
Employees Helping Employees
The Employee Giving Campaign is a central part of the Augusta Health Foundation’s annual outreach and the majority of employees who participate do so as a way to help others. The Cake Frost event raised $26,000 for the Foundation’s 2019 Employee Giving Campaign with 100 percent of that money going to help patients and employees in need (see snapshot). Although the event was intended as a one-time kickoff, it proved so popular that many teams are already talking about what they’ll be doing next year. “This was a wonderful event to bring employees together, it was a great way for employees to showcase their talents and connect with each other,” said Tracy Sansossio, RN, Infection Control Coordinator. “We are ready to step up our game for next year’s competition.”
The Employee Emergency Fund was established for employees and by employees in 2014. Its purpose is to aid employees who face an emergency or experience unexpected financial difficulties and who may be running out of options. This fund is a favorite among many employees that choose to “give back” during the Employee Giving Campaign. Cancer Center R.N. Michele Davis applied to the fund after she’d had knee replacement surgery and experienced a bad fall just a short time afterward. With a still-mending knee, she fell and broke her ankle and was not able to return to work. Thanks to the Employee Emergency Fund, Michele was able to cover the cost of her health insurance premium during the extended time that she was out of work. This gave her time to heal without worrying if she had medical coverage for her family. Now that she’s back at work, she was eager to contribute to the fund as a way to pay back the generosity of those who helped her — and pay it forward a little, too. “I don’t know what I would have done without the fund’s help,” Davis says. “I was quick to sign up to make a payroll deduction pledge this year as I wanted to give back to the organization that helped me when I needed it most.”
