All aboard for Manchester Central

The Manchester Cleaning Show returns to the city in April at its new home – Manchester Central. The venue will host the event on 6 and 7 April, welcoming visitors from across the region and beyond (see Page 27).

As the organiser put the finishing touches to the event programme, Killis was announced as the Official Innovation Partner for the show. Following the successful UK launch of its king-sized, autonomous cleaning robot, Rex, at the Cleaning Show in London, Killis is coming to Manchester to demonstrate its forward-thinking advanced robotics, the latest in scrubber dryer technology and its growing sustainability range. Attendees can also join Tibor Killi, MD of Killis, who will speak during the event’s conference (see Page 30). He’ll help show attendees to discover more about cobotics and address why the cleaning industry needs to embrace the latest advancements in innovative cleaning equipment. The presentation will look at how collaborative robotics can ease a human-intensive workforce, freeing up valuable time and making cleaner, healthier spaces. The Conference Theatre will also transform into a demonstration area once the conference sessions have concluded on both days, enabling Killis to show exactly what its cobotic machines can do.

The Manchester Cleaning Show has also announced an Official Hygiene Partner for the event, Dettol Pro Solutions. Following on from its successful collaboration with the COP26 Summit, Dettol Pro Solutions will be working with the organiser to ensure each visitor has a safe visit to the event. Each morning at 11.00am,

experts from the Dettol Pro Solutions team will be delivering keynote presentations in the Conference Theatre, sharing invaluable insights about hygiene practices with attendees.

In other news, I want to congratulate the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners on becoming the first City of London Livery Company to be accredited as a Living Wage employer. This is a great achievement and shows the way for other Livery Companies to follow suit. Gary Fage, Master of the WCEC, said: “The Living Wage demonstrates an understanding that without fair pay, we cannot adequately resource our industry. Fair is fair when it comes to remuneration.”

Registration for the Manchester Cleaning Show 2022 is open. To register for your free entry pass and to find further information on this year’s event, please visit: www.cleaningshow.co.uk/manchester

WCEC becomes first livery company to be accredited as a Living Wage employer

THE Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners (WCEC) has been named as the first City Livery Company to become an accredited Living Wage employer.

Gary Fage, Master of the WCEC, said: “The Living Wage demonstrates an understanding that without fair pay, we cannot adequately resource our industry. Fair is fair when it comes to remuneration. I’d like to recognise the foresight and efforts of the WCEC Court

Assistant, Phil Smith, whose experience with the Living Wage Foundation and as a founding member of the Recognised Service Provider Scheme have helped to smooth our livery’s way to becoming a Living Wage employer.”

Astley Hire achieves carbon neutral status

ASTLEY Hire is one of the first industrial equipment hire companies to achieve carbon neutral status for December 2020 - November 2021 under PAS 2026 framework.

In 2021 Astley Hire embarked on a 12-month project to address how it could further minimise the environmental impact of the business. The company has held the ISO 14001 environmental standard for many years but was inspired to make the push for carbon neutrality by the UK’s target to become carbon neutral by 2050.

Astley Hire engaged with consultancy service Charis Ventures Ltd to assist with the project. By working together to form and implement a comprehensive carbon scheme, Astley Hire and

Charis Ventures were able to reduce a potential carbon footprint of 142.08 tons down to a residual value of 48.24 tons, which has been offset via the government approved Carbon Footprint scheme. Astley Hire’s general manager, Martin Doran, said: “We have always been aware of the impact of our business activities on the outside world. I am pleased to have reached this significant milestone of zero carbon neutrality and be one of the first hire companies in the UK to have achieved this status. Our customers who prioritise their green credentials can benefit greatly from knowing they are hiring equipment from a carbon-neutral provider.”

Sodexo and OCS to spearhead pan-industry modern slavery council

SODEXO has joined forces with OCS to spearhead the creation of a new council comprising 19 organisations to form a crossindustry group to tackle modern slavery, supported by government. The new service and infrastructure modern slavery council will work together to eradicate risk, remove the crime and support the victims of modern slavery through supply chains.

Sodexo had been working with OCS since the middle of 2021 on the idea and presented the proposal through a webinar on the subject held by the Business Services Association (BSA) in December 2021, with speakers from government and industry including Sodexo and Serco. The BSA has supported Sodexo

and OCS in the formation of the council. The group will work to raise awareness within the industry, markets and communities as well as share best practice to mitigate the risks relating to modern slavery.

Madeline Lodge, modern slavery lead, Sodexo UK and Ireland, said: “We are committed to tackling modern slavery and by bringing together a collective body of organisations we are looking to ensure standards are set and maintained. This is a hugely important area - modern slavery can take many different forms including forced labour and servitude. It is estimated that at any given time over 40 million people worldwide are in modern slavery and the

COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem. We are thrilled to have so many organisations join this council and look forward to working with all in an open and collaborative manner to address this important issue. Working together we have the power to make real change.”

Pinnacle Group and BCHS introduce Project Switch

PINNACLE Group, together with Bunzl Cleaning and Hygiene Services (BCHS), have launched Project Switch - a new national sustainability standard for commercial cleaning and hygiene supplies.

Project Switch is a new set of standards designed by Pinnacle Group and BCHS to ensure that sustainably produced and packaged cleaning chemicals, plus hygiene consumables, are prioritised across Pinnacle Group’s soft facilities services portfolio. As part of the collaborative sustainability initiative, BCHS has committed to offsetting carbon emissions associated with Pinnacle cleaning supplies

delivery management, so they are carbon neutral.

Sarah Russell, procurement manager for Pinnacle Group, said: “Over the next two years, Pinnacle Group and BCHS intend to roll out and embed the new purchasing practices outlined within the policy, in order to reduce our carbon emissions and improve the impact we have on the communities we work within as well as the wider environment. Taking visible and accountable steps like this is important, as while we recognise it is not always possible to have products meet the requirements of this standard, we are striving towards this

Birkin receives funding ‘Boost’

BIRKIN Group has secured a growth loan from the alternative lender, BOOST&Co, as well as a flexible invoice discounting (FID) facility from the lender’s sister company, Growth Lending. The loans offer a tailored funding solution to Birkin Group that is expected to create new jobs across the organisation and enable the business to invest in new technology.

Kim Martin, head of the south and midlands at BOOST&Co, said: “We are absolutely delighted to support Paul, Tyrone and the rest of the team at Birkin Cleaning Services on this

deal. The business has demonstrated strong financial performance and is ideally placed to maximise the opportunities presented by the current environment and the need for enhanced cleaning and sanitisation.”

Paul Ashton, CEO at Birkin Group, said: “Working with both BOOST&Co and Growth Lending made sense, as both lenders have worked collaboratively to understand our proposition and drive to achieve growth. Our business has continued to innovate and this funding enables us to push this growth

by ensuring that there are no products in use that fall below our minimum product standard, which goes above and beyond compliance.”

Anna McArdle, sustainability manager for BCHS, said: “BCHS is proud to work collaboratively with Pinnacle Group on improving the impact we both have on local communities and the wider environment. Supported by the BCHS Sustainable Solutions initiative, the sustainability policy and carbon offsetting commitment together ensure products are sourced sustainably and have a limited impact on the environment.”

Research reveals importance of patient experience in aiding recovery

ACCORDING to new YouGov research for Sodexo Healthcare, 93% of inpatients believe they are more likely to get better quicker and leave hospital sooner if they have had a positive hospital experience. Cleanliness was second only to the approachability of the clinical staff and was viewed as more important than the procedure itself among inpatients

The survey, which was completed by a representative sample of over 2000 UK adults and commissioned to mark the launch of Sodexo Healthcare’s new bedside-based

Sustainable housekeeping at Cedar Court Hotels

CEDAR Court is a group of four-star luxury hotels located in Yorkshire across Harrogate, Wakefield, Huddersfield and Bradford. At the beginning of the pandemic the group’s managing director, Wayne Topley, was looking to find new solutions to protect customers and staff against COVID-19, as well as to improve the cleaning regime across over 500 bedrooms - all while reducing environmental impact. Topley approached Spectrum Cleaning Solutions to find out what could be done.

Jo Thompson, Spectrum’s MD, introduced Cedar to the sustainable range of Toucan Eco products, which produce an effective disinfectant cleaner from tap water, normal salt and electrochemical activation. She said: “Toucan Eco removes the need for the majority of your synthetical cleaning chemicals, along with all of the plastic bottle waste these solutions are supplied in, replacing them with a powerful but safe and non-toxic solution

that’s certified to EN 14476 and EN 16777 for viruses and EN 1276 and EN 13697 for bacteria. It’s been great to provide the cleaning teams at Cedar Court with such an effective solution as Toucan Eco. During the early stages of the pandemic, when surface sanitisers were in short supply, Cedar Court’s investment really paid dividends, especially as they didn’t need to rely on a stretched supply chain - they could simply

make their own disinfectant cleaner on-site and on demand.”

The hotel group installed one of two models, Toucan Eco Active or Toucan Eco Active Plus, at each site depending on individual site requirements. Toucan Eco Active makes 10 litres in 15 minutes, while Toucan Eco Active Plus comes with a spray bottle and hose dispensing system and takes 45 minutes to make 20 litres from the spray dispenser and 30 litres from the hose dispenser.

Wayne Topley said: “I truly believe Toucan Eco is the future of eco-friendly cleaning. It’s so simple to use, effective and it’s led by science - it really is a new way of working. Over the last 12 months our cleaning chemical costs have reduced by 75% and the initial investment has already been returned. More importantly though, I know my teams are using a safe and effective sustainable product in all areas of the business.”

Protecting the cleaning workforce at Clearground

CLEARGROUND is using job management software technology from BigChange to improve health and safety across its nationwide operation. BigChange brings together customer relationship management (CRM), job scheduling, live tracking, field resource management, job finance, and business intelligence into a simple, easy to use, integrated platform.

Specialising in waste management, commercial window cleaning and drainage services, Wirralbased Clearground is using BigChange to ensure the safety of operatives with automated, dynamic risk assessments. The software is also helping

Clearground to identify potential issues at customer sites with intelligent incident analysis, comparing callout rates between similar sites and reviewing historical and current activity.

“Safety and compliance are key to the welfare of our staff and customers and also to the success of our company,” said Claire Piercy, general manager at Clearground. “In fact, it’s one of the reasons we selected BigChange. The ability to create customised, dynamic risk assessments and make their completion on-site mandatory goes beyond other systems we looked at.

It is more than just a box ticking exercise, it means our operatives really must consider the environment in which they are working and understand what risks that may pose.”

Will we ever meet the new norm?

THERE is a reasonably well-known phrase that says when America sneezes, the world catches a cold. I think we now know what happens if China sneezes! At the beginning of this year, which is really just a couple of months ago, we all believed we were coming out of the pandemic. I do not think anyone would have believed there would have been a war in Europe. As I write, there are disastrous floods happening in Australia where, only a year ago, terrible bush fires were raging. So, I do not believe the world has settled and we have a new norm!

In this context, I look at what is happening in the UK. Dr Stephen Covey (‘The 7 habits of highly effective people’) states that it takes 28 days to form a habit. During lockdown we had far longer than 28 days to form habits - for example, a better work life balance which, in most cases, has become a better life work balance. The working day is predominantly more under the control of the employee than the employer with the exception of essential workers who cannot work from home, and it is blatantly obvious that a cleaning operative cannot sit behind a computer and clean an office (certainly not yet)!

The Prime Minister recently quoted a phrase from The Lion King to No. 10 staff, claiming ‘change is Good’.

Many office employees in London are not just working from home (WFH), but are also adopting the new workfrom-hybrid model known as TWAT – or, more politely, referred to as TW&T: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Different sectors have radically varying rates of working from home. ONS figures from April 2021 stated that approximately 18% of IT staff, and 42% of real estate staff have returned to their workplace. The figures for healthcare and social workers are uncertain, but it appears that approximately 80% have returned to their workplace. Remember that, during this period, some staff were still on furlough.

Many roles have turned from customer facing to colleague facing, held via Zoom or Teams. I prefer the days when Zoom was an ice-lolly and you were either in the rugby team or you were not!

The problem with Zoom and Teams is by its very nature it is virtual. In larger organisations, it is very unhelpful when participants have not entered their correct username or are using someone else’s computer. As we all know, nature abhors a vacuum and in many cases AI has filled the gap. I recently booked a repair appointment totally through AI,

with no human contact whatsoever and, to be frank, I was not impressed with AI’s attitude. It seemed to have no empathy with the fact that my problem was that I was freezing cold!

I can see that the cleaning industry will have to adapt to these new working practices and whilst there is a resistance from office staff to return to the office full-time in the current climate, employers are to some extent experiencing a reduction in the use of utilities. So I am reminded of two songs. Firstly, ‘How ya gonna keep ‘em down on the farm (after they’ve seen paree)?’ refers to American soldiers in the First World War who came from rural America and ended up in Paris. Their whole perception of the world changed which is what has happened with working from home. Secondly, the much-maligned Max Bygraves 1960 song ‘Fings ain’t what they used t’be’ - in my humble opinion they never will be again.

Pandemic drives international growth in wheelie bin washing

THE UK has been at the forefront of professional bin cleaning for over 30 years. The first professional domestic wheelie bin cleaning industry was established here in the UK back in the early nineties, then a few years later the first commercial bin cleaning sector developed.

The UK’s bin cleaning industry has now been used as a template for international bin cleaning services across the world including in the United States of America, Australia, Europe, and Africa. These overseas bin cleaning companies source their mobile bin cleaning equipment from here in the UK, designed and manufactured by small British companies. With the onset of the COVID-19 virus and the pandemic then spreading across the UK, we saw a huge increase in demand for professional wheelie bin cleaning from within the UK, especially from commercial companies and organisations including the National Health Service, schools and local authorities, all contracting local and national wheelie bin cleaning services to come and wash their commercial bins onsite on a regular basis. As the UK comes out of all COVID restrictions, the clean-up begins to make sure this virus is wiped away for good and to prevent this sort of thing from happening ever again.

To help with the fight against germs and bacteria, a new market has developed here in the UK for the supply of static bin washing equipment which can be installed into facilities such as hospitals, airports and factories for facilities management companies, NHS Trusts and waste contractors, allowing their staff to wash their own bin stock onsite more regularly. The National Association of Wheeled Bin Washers (NAWBW) is proud to announce that two of the British-based companies leading the way and filling the demand for this sort of bespoke cleaning equipment are members of our association.

Morclean Ltd and Green Cleen (UK) Ltd are ensuring that the UK retains its position as global leaders in the manufacturing of bespoke bin cleaning solutions as they are both now manufacturing these customised bin cleaning machines for clients across the UK. Customers including ISS Medicare, Veolia, Dundee Council, and Skanska and are now shipping these machines across Europe, the USA and even to the Middle East for countries like the UAE, which has been watching the growing market here in the UK and now wish to install similar equipment.

In keeping with companies trying to reach their net-zero policies, Morclean and Green Cleen (UK) have designed and developed their bespoke bin cleaning equipment to run off three-phase electric instead of the conventional diesel and petrol engines commonly used with this sort of equipment.

Not only does this reduce pollution but allows these machines to be installed inside factories and similar buildings. They have been built with integrated multi-stage water recycling systems, reducing the amount of water required in the bin cleaning process whilst only using 100% bio-degradable bespoke chemicals which eliminate 99% of all known germs and bacteria whilst being environmentally friendly.

The NAWBW is still the only recognised bin cleaning association in the world which is why we are used by companies and authorities both here in the UK and overseas for advice on the correct legislation and guidance for the bin cleaning industry. The association aims to continue supporting innovative companies developing the equipment used for bin cleaning, and our members who use the equipment as part of their cleaning services, whilst educating and advising businesses, organisations and authorities about bin hygiene.

The changing nature of cleaning presentations

ONE thing I have always loved about tender presentations is that they are a chance to develop personal chemistry with a potential client, expound your technical knowledge in areas where you have spotted opportunities for improvement and make the general case for why a client should appoint you ahead of your competitors.

I was, therefore, interested recently when looking at the agenda for certain presentations to note that the balance of questioning is noticeably switching towards what we are all coming to know as ESG (environmental social governance) issues and, in particular, questions around equality, diversity and social inclusion. How do you propose to ensure diverse ethnic participation in cleaning teams at individual site level? How are you going to add value to the local community? How will you measure these? I decided to attend one of the presentations myself to gauge the tone and, sure enough, the focus was very much on ESG-style questioning rather than on technical expertise, service delivery, or what most of us think of as the quality side of things.

ESG is a concept born out of the financial services sector to help guide investment decisions, but its focus on social issues has made it a welcome and particularly relevant

topic for the cleaning industry. Which leads me to ask what is the best way for both clients and contractors to deal with this in presentations? On the one hand cynics may say it will be nothing more than a tick box exercise in which contractors deliver politically correct answers against social value objectives. On the other, there is no doubting that we work in an industry where staff can be vulnerable to unfair or unequal treatment, however unintentional, across recruitment, promotion and general man management, simply because the procedures are not in place to stop it happening. As a result, it makes good sense for us, as contractors, to address the social issues referenced by ESG. We do, of course have an in-built advantage as an industry. Cleaning is probably the most ethnically diverse and gender-equal industry in the country because of the historical composition of the available labour pool. What’s more, I am proud to say that, at least as far as DOC is concerned, diversity and equality does not just happen at the coal face - it percolates right the way up through the company as front line staff are promoted to management. In the background, however, is the reality that when a company takes over a new contract, it cannot socially engineer the make-up of the on-site team, nor might it

want to if there is stability and a strong work ethic. And then there is the major challenge we are all facing at the moment, namely the tightest labour market in probably 30 years. I have heard contractors say it sometimes feels like a case of ‘needs must’ when it comes to recruitment and if that means relying on a good supervisor to recruit from their local community, even if pro tem it leads to a slight bias in one or more areas, then that may be the most effective way to get the contract staffed and running smoothly to the client’s satisfaction.

So, I feel there is an interesting debate to be had. As contractors, we acknowledge the importance of diversity, equality and inclusiveness, and at the same time we face certain realities. Working with sustainability and social value consultants, as many contractors do, we all need to find ways of delivering against key ESG objectives whilst maintaining an effective workforce. My hope is that those charged with the responsibility of procuring cleaning contracts will engage with the cleaning industry, through the medium of tenders, to recognise that our objective must be both to provide a first-class cleaning service and to deliver on ESG, not one at the expense of the other.

Can biotech support the healthcare sector with deeper cleaning and reduced emissions?

The COVID-19 pandemic has once again shown healthcare to be arguably the most important sector. And cleaning and sanitisation within healthcare are absolutely essential. Healthcare therefore uses an exceptionally high volume of cleaning and sanitisation products.

The products used need to be highly effective but what if the range of products used were not only efficient in keeping surfaces clean but also helped the healthcare sector reduce its Co2 emissions at the same time?

How cleaning biotechnology works

Biotech-based cleaning products work by attacking dirt on surfaces. They do this by emulsifying, lifting, dispersing, sequestering, suspending, and decomposing soils. Active agents - known as surfactants - stir up surface activity to help trap and remove dirt. Surfactants can act as detergents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, foaming agents, or dispersants.

At BioHygiene, its cleaning products harness the power of microbes, enzymes and natural plant extracts that work deep into surfaces to break down and remove dirt, grime and grease quickly.

The microbes used within the products, specifically bacteria, are present in the spore form. When the bacteria are introduced to suitable conditions, the spores germinate,

and the bacteria begin to grow, colonising the application area.

Enzymes are added directly to its formulations where they are referred to as ‘free enzymes’. They work the same way as bacterial enzymes, providing immediate action by breaking down organic matter and eliminating odours. Free enzymes are used in conjunction with bacteria to provide an initial kick-start of activity until the microbial population is established and the bacteria start to do their work.

Residual cleaning

Residual cleaning is an advantage of biotech cleaning that can particularly benefit hospitals and the healthcare sector. Whereas many traditional and non-biotech products simply clean when applied, biotech formulas continue to clean long after the standard cleaning process has finished.

Microbes break down organic matter and continue to ‘feed’ so long as there is a food source. They colonise an area, creating what’s known as a biofilm, and continue to work long after application, keeping odours at bay for longer. This means that the product doesn’t need to be applied as often, resulting in much-needed cost savings for the healthcare sector, as well as leading to a cut in CO2e.

CO2e reductions

There are many ways using certain products can help contribute to a reduction in CO2e. Where and how raw materials are sourced, the need to use less product and the type of packaging used can all have a substantial impact.

BioHygiene uses a combination of ecotec and biotech ingredients including plant extracts, microbes, enzymes, and fermentation extracts, all with favourable ecotoxicity profiles and low health hazards. Extraction of raw materials is carried out in Europe, reducing transport-related CO2e from sourcing ingredients. The eco-solvents used are made entirely from renewable, biobased resources that replace and reduce conventional solvents and hazardous chemicals and achieve a neutral or positive CO2e impact. Additionally, a long-lasting cleaning action enables customers to use less product. Fewer bottles are used, reducing overall plastic waste. For instance, the plastic bottles used to package its range use 100% post-consumer resin (PCR), saving a further 85% CO2e.

Clearly, if the products are sourced from the right place, with the right ethics, it is plausible that switching to something biotech-based can help keep surfaces cleaner for longer whilst keeping CO2e lower.

Jangro enhances sustainability

Jangro has launched a new range of cleaning products, working with its customers to make more sustainable purchases and reduce their carbon footprint. The ntrl portfolio comprises 13 products ideal for cleaning surfaces in a variety of environments, from kitchens through to washrooms.

Produced to ISO 9001 and 14001 QMS standards, the ntrl range includes washroom cleaners, toilet cleaners, foam hand soap, multi-surface cleaner, and much more. All

products within the range feature plant-based extracts and are vegan friendly. Their natural formulas are 100% biodegradable, contain zero petrochemicals and can reduce the product’s carbon footprint by up to 85%.

The ntrl Washroom Cleaner and the ntrl Multi-Surface Cleaner also contain probiotics. Rather than killing germs with chemicals, probiotics use beneficial bacteria to colonise surfaces, in effect taking over the area, including deep into hard-to-reach cracks and

crevices. This means they can help to reduce the presence of harmful bacteria on surfaces.

All packaging is recycled and recyclable. Since products are packaged into PCR (postconsumer recycled bottles), CO2 emissions are reduced and physical plastic pollution removed. Outer boxes are made from 100% recycled and FSC certified cardboard. 100% of the range is made in the UK and has not been tested on animals.

What are the NHS efficacy and external audits?

The National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness introduced three auditing systems for NHS Trusts, but we’ve heard enough about the technical audit and its 50-point check, so what are the other two? Dan Teare, sector director at mpro5, explains.

What is the efficacy audit?

In short, the efficacy audit is designed to measure how you clean as opposed to what you clean and how frequently. Efficaciousness is determined using evidence-based, scientific methods. This will include:

• Checking that the cleaning operative is using the right colour coding and following all correct cleaning procedures.

• Wearing appropriate uniform and personal protective equipment (PPE).

• Using gloves and chemicals safely and adhering to safe ways of working.

• Safely moving furniture and equipment in order to clean.

• Rectifying actions are being taken in a timely manner.

There are many more metrics to be measured on, and all these questions are rated on a simple scale, it’s either a 1 or a 0.

When should I do an efficacy audit?

While trusts have the freedom to determine audit frequency, patient and visitor-facing areas must be audited for cleaning effectiveness at least once a year. But I’d say once a year is a low bar: your operations will benefit from doing these audits more often, possibly even on a monthly basis.

Unfortunately, you can’t only audit your shiniest areas. With one exception, you will need to select areas at random.

That exception is areas specifically targeted for performance review as they have not achieved safe standards consistently, or because they have high rates of infection. For areas that score 80% or less the audit findings should be used to create an improvement plan with

support such as further training, investment in new equipment and materials, increased supervision, more resources, and changing cleaning times.

The external audit

Then there’s the external audit that involves collaborating with neighbouring facilities (also known as ‘auditing your mates’). Teaming up is a quick and easy way to find suitably qualified staff to act as auditors, often on a reciprocal basis.

This third-party audit performs a vital role. There are no scores involved - it’s all about the systems you have in place. Are your functional risk areas divided sensibly? Have you got a system to identify low-performing areas and how effective is your remediation process? Admittedly, this audit is entirely subjective but it’s no less valuable for that. It’s a way of learning from others’ experiences and sharing best practice. Like the efficacy audit, this check is purely advisory but, recognising how powerful a fresh pair

of eyes can be, switched-on trusts will perform this independent assessment anyway for the often eye-opening insights it can reveal.

How can a digital solution help?

I’d be remiss not to point out that all three of these audits are enhanced drastically with a digital solution. You can turn your audit from a fixed event to a continuous process: cleaning operatives can gather data as they work via a works management app and send this data straight to the cloud.

Such systems enable managers to see which areas of the healthcare facility are cleaned well and which not so well by viewing dashboard reportsand these comparisons can provide valuable insight.

For example, if you’re getting a low score for your technical audit but a high score for your efficacy audit, the mismatch tells you your cleaning operatives are doing their jobs properly but they’re simply stretched too thin. Conversely, if you score highly on your technical audit but poorly on the efficacy audit, this could mean the cleaning operatives are not doing their jobs well and you’re overstaffed in that space: they’re all doing half a job.

All audits are created equal

I’ll end by pointing out the obvious. The standards’ three-audit system has been expressly designed to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts - to give a comprehensive view of all aspects of cleaning performance, from what areas are cleaned to how well they’re cleaned and, lastly, ideas for improvement. If your trust focuses on the technical audit to the exclusion of everything else, you really are missing a trick.

Boosting cleaning productivity and efficiency in healthcare

Matt Gellie, key account manager – public services, at Kärcher UK discusses ways facilities managers can help their businesses to meet cleaning standards in a productive and efficient manner.

Maintaining high levels of cleanliness and hygiene has long been a priority for healthcare facility managers to create a safe environment for patients and staff. From the risk of bacteria proliferating in wards and treatment rooms, to trips and slips caused by spillages and waste in common passageways, to the risks to patients and hospital staff from poorly managed amenities, facilities managers must ensure hygiene standards are consistently met all year round.

The impact of the pandemic has led to increased pressures on facilities managers due to heightened patient sensitivity around what it means for something to be ‘clean’. Patients are increasingly aware of general cleanliness and whether surfaces have been disinfected or sanitised.

This increased awareness has amplified the demand on facilities managers to minimise risks to protect the health of patients and hospital staff. With the same number of hours in the day and more cleaning to be done, it is imperative that effective cleaning measures are undertaken to boost efficiency, minimise disruption and meet high cleaning standards.

Boosting efficiency

To help facilities managers tackle unwanted dirt build-up, Kärcher has devised the PDIR cleaning method. The ‘preventative, daily, interim, and restorative’ cleaning method is a strategic approach to facility cleaning that starts by tackling outdoor pollutants to stop them entering the building.

Traditional intensive and restorative cleaning requires vast amounts of time, energy, chemical usage, and disruption as areas need to be closed off to allow for the process to take place. Instead, by focusing on the P, D, and I of PDIR, cost and time can be saved by implementing regular maintenance training practices that enable facilities managers to tackle dirt head-on by preventing dirt from entering facilities, daily cleaning and disinfection of carpets and hard floors, and interim maintenance to protect appearance.

Minimising disruption

With increased cleaning demands, downtime greatly disrupts cleaning efficiency and places patients and workers at risk from the build-up of unwanted dirt and pathogens. To mitigate this, facilities managers should choose a reliable equipment provider to obtain a fleet of machines that will run 24/7 with minimal breakdown risk.

To support equipment managers, Kärcher has recently extended its servicing model to include video diagnostics where its trained engineers will help guide them remotely through fixing the machine so it can get back up and running again quickly on-site. If it cannot be solved remotely, Kärcher’s engineers will visit the site to fix the machine in person.

Meeting standards

With different teams working to maintain hospital cleanliness through all hours of the day and night, it is

important that all staff can deliver a consistent quality of clean. Unique solutions such as the Kärcher Intelligent Key (KIK) system allow users to achieve this as facilities managers can pre-set cleaning modes so that all operators can ensure the same level of cleanliness no matter who is on shift.

Alongside this, it is important to ensure that staff are trained on the latest methods and how to use the machines most efficiently. Utilising training academies such as the Kärcher Academy will allow facilities managers to easily meet their targets through more robust, efficient and productive cleaning.

Keeping up with the demand and increased pressures of hospital and healthcare hygiene is one of the greatest challenges for facilities managers. However, ensuring that they have the right cleaning methods in place, the right equipment and the right training, they can meet these demands both productively and efficiently. WWW.KARCHER.CO.UK

Sepsis: is this a breakthrough?

Sepsis is often referred to as the ‘silent killer’ and with good reason. It affects around 250,000 people in the UK each year, with hospital patients being at a particularly high risk. If sepsis is not swiftly detected it can rapidly lead to organ failure and death. In fact an estimated 52,000 people in Britain die of sepsis annually.

But the condition is notoriously hard to diagnose. Typical symptoms include fever, chills, nausea, a rapid pulse rate, and diarrhoea, all of which are also signs of less serious ailments. So it is all too easy for sepsis sufferers to slip through the net and remain untreated - until it is too late.

Scientists have been working tirelessly over the past few years to develop new ways of diagnosing the condition. And in December 2021 there came a breakthrough.

Imperial Research announced that it had created a new digital alert system capable of monitoring at-risk patients for a range of infection responses. Common sepsis markers such as body temperature changes and fluctuations in heart rate can be assessed via the system. Health workers are then automatically alerted when a patient’s symptoms show signs of requiring further investigation.

While the digital alert tool is still in the development stage, it has been associated with a 24% reduction in deaths during trials involving sepsis patients. This development spells promising news. And it is just one of a series of new breakthroughs designed to improve sepsis diagnosis and treatment.

In September 2018 the NHS launched a ‘Suspicion of Sepsis Dashboard’ tool

that provides staff with an overall picture of hospital admissions. This gives an indication of how far sepsis interventions are improving patient outcomes while also helping staff to assess the scale of the problem at local, regional and national level.

In 2020, researchers at the Laboratory of Bionanophotonic Systems at EPFL's School of Engineering developed an optical biosensor designed to reduce the time required for diagnosing sepsis from a number of days to just a few minutes. The portable device works by rapidly detecting sepsis biomarkers in a patient's bloodstream. And also in 2020, researchers at Ohio State University discovered that Injecting patients with genetically-edited

white blood cells could be key to fighting sepsis. White blood cells were taken from healthy mice and modified to become macrophages capable of ‘eating’ bacteria and viruses. When these edited cells were transplanted into the bodies of mice with sepsis, they significantly reduced the levels of bacteria present.

These developments have all been pivotal in helping to diagnose and treat the silent killer, which is a particular issue in hospitals. Many patients are elderly and frail and have compromised immune systems, while also being surrounded by other people who are ill.

However, sepsis only takes hold in response to an infection. And according to the Sepsis Alliance, many infections can be prevented in the first place via good wound care and by practising consistent hand hygiene. Any break in the skin could allow bacteria to enter and cause an infection. It is therefore vital that all wounds are constantly monitored by healthcare staff and cleaned thoroughly between dressing changes.

High standards of hand hygiene are also of paramount importance. According to the World Health Organization, hand hygiene is thought to be able to cut the number of healthcare-related infections in general by up to 40%. The Sepsis Alliance advises frequent hand washing with soap and water followed by a thorough dry using a clean towel. Meanwhile, WHO urges all healthcare workers to adopt its ‘My five

moments of hand hygiene’ which states that healthcare staff should wash their hands before touching a patient, before carrying out any aseptic procedure, after exposure to body fluid, after touching a patient, and after touching the patient’s surroundings. But while frequent hand washing is crucial to preventing crosscontamination, around 70% of healthcare workers globally still fail to practise hand hygiene on a regular basis according to the WHO’s Clean Hands 2020 campaign.

The reasons behind this poor compliance include a shortage of time, the nonavailability of products and a low level of understanding about the importance of good hand hygiene protocols. Some healthcare workers also complain of poor skin health due to frequent hand washing using harsh soaps and abrasive hand towels. So it is important to ensure that skin-friendly products are always available and that healthcare workers understand the importance of using them.

Mild soaps and soft hand towels make hand washing and drying a much more pleasant experience. For example, Tork Extra Mild Foam Soap is allergy-friendly and certified by ECARF, the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation, while Tork Xpress Extra Soft Multifold Hand Towels are soft, absorbent and gentle on the skin. And a fragrance-free conditioning cream such as Tork Non-perfumed Hand & Body Lotion will help to prevent chapping and soreness when used after hand washing.

Staff should also be instructed on the optimum way of washing their hands.

Essity’s own Tork Clean Hands Training module invites users into a digital world where they are confronted with a series of scenarios where hand hygiene needs to be carried out. Developed in collaboration with behavioural scientists and hand hygiene experts, the training aims to provide hand hygiene guidance in an engaging way.

Besides being skin-friendly, all hand hygiene products should be easy to use to facilitate the process for harassed healthcare workers. The Tork Skincare Dispenser has been designed to be particularly easy to use even for people with low hand strength, and the unit houses 2500 shots of foam soap which ensures that it will not run out when a hand wash is urgently needed.

In cases where hand washing is impractical or inconvenient, staff should be encouraged to sanitise their hands using an alcohol gel or hand rub. Tork Alcohol Hand Sanitisers are available in a range of formats designed for the medical worker’s convenience.

Research into finding new ways of diagnosing and tackling sepsis is continuing at pace. In February this year it was announced that a five-year US study into the role that artificial intelligence could play in Improving sepsis diagnoses and enhancing patient outcomes was to begin at Emory University, Atlanta. So the fight against sepsis has entered a promising new phase. But in the meantime, hospitals should do what they can to remain vigilant and to improve hand hygiene to help reduce the number of infections.

Realising the value of waste

Fairview Facilities Management (FFM) delivers FM solutions to industrial, food manufacturing and clinical sectors across the UK and Ireland. Utilising its bespoke Smart Tech Platform, FFM guarantees annual savings following a due diligence process of review of current services. Looking specifically at waste management for facilities managers, FFM’s managing director, Ben McCauley, reports.

During the due diligence process of working with each new client, we seek to unlock and deliver financial savings and almost always discover that their recycling processes are inadequate and that they are missing out on the opportunity to recover significant rebates.

Unlocking the value of waste

We help our clients to reverse their behaviour and spending. Before we become involved, they are paying companies to take waste away from their premises and facilities. Now, our on-site staff separate waste, so that it can be collected by the correct recyclers. As a result, our clients make money from their waste - sufficient to more than cover the cost of the process. Each month, for each waste stream according to tonnage, we receive a rebate from the recycler, which we pass on to our client.

In manufacturing facilities we examine specific recycling opportunities for particular waste streams and ensure that separation and collection are optimised. Improving sustainability is the ultimate aim but adopting processes and procedures

to ensure correct separation and collection has allowed our clients to understand and embrace the fact that waste has value. Rebates can be achieved across all types of waste, from cardboard, through most plastics, to aluminium and steel, realising a previously untapped, viable revenue stream. We always look at the bigger picture and at every aspect of a business, doing all we can to help our clients improve their

sustainability credentials and reduce their carbon footprint. It is important to reduce or remove plastics on-site so, as an example, where we provide vending or catering services, we’ve swapped out the cups to recyclable ones from VegWare.

Education is key to efficient waste management

In every business, education is key to efficient waste management. For many of our manufacturing clients, the separation of materials for recycling in the factory is quite obvious, but when you get down to behaviour in common and rest areas, we still witness the tendency for people to see a bin and just throw waste into it, without considering what needs to happen next.

We support our clients by providing the correct range of bins, appropriate signage and education. Our staff actively engage with our client’s employees to encourage best practice, and we put up posters which emphasise the importance of correctly separating waste and explain that by so doing, it has a value, bringing income, rather than incurring cost. In this way we can

There is a huge amount on offer at the show, which is organised by the British Cleaning Council and Quartz Business Media, but above all this is a chance to celebrate our industry and workforce, particularly after the fantastic commitment shown in the last two grueling years. Cleaning professionals from across the sector have demonstrated great bravery, determination and skill whilst working on the frontline in the fight against the pandemic.

The event will also feature the sector’s latest products and innovations as well as a fascinating conference programme with talks on hot topics such as robotics/cobotics and sustainability. You can also hear from BCC members the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) and the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) during the conference, whilst former BCC chairman, Paul Thrupp, is opening the show.

Do please take the chance to visit us at the BCC stand, where you can find out about our latest sector research and other important industry topics.

During this opening keynote former BCC chairman, Paul Thrupp, will discuss the role of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Cleaning and Hygiene Industry, the BCC’s determination to achieve its key strategic objectives and the importance of the industry working together as a collective. Morning Keynote: Protecting people and spaces with targeted hygiene.

By Dr Lisa Ackerley, director of medical and scientific engagement, hygiene at Reckitt, and Stuart Bainbridge, R&D director - new growth platforms, Reckitt.

Synopsis:

In today’s world, consumer expectation is higher than ever when it comes to hygiene, cleanliness and the feeling of security that sanitised spaces can bring. The need to reassure consumers has led to many businesses and organisations delivering ‘hygiene theatre’ - the term for a way of cleaning which is highly visible and all-encompassing, but that ultimately does little to help protect people and spaces. During this keynote, Dr Lisa Ackerley and Stuart Bainbridge will discuss the dangers of hygiene theatre, and how adopting targeted hygiene - a science-backed and bespoke risk-based hygiene methodology - can be the answer to unlocking consumer confidence and helping sectors of all types to bounce back.

Biographies:

Dr Lisa Ackerley is a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner. She has worked in the public and private sector as an expert witness

and for over 30 years as an independent hygiene and safety adviser providing advice and support to many industry sectors and as a KOL working with the mass media on hygiene and safety issues. For five years prior to working for Reckitt she was food and safety adviser to UK Hospitality, working closely with many industry and government stakeholders on development of guidance and implementation of legislation. Lisa is a trustee and chair of the Food Special Interest Group at the Royal Society for Public Health and trustee and scientific adviser to the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene (IFH).

In his role at Reckitt, Stuart Bainbridge is responsible for leadership of the Pro Solutions business, based in Slough. Stuart is responsible for leading new product development, innovation strategy and delivering best-inclass solutions and science for partners, with teams and laboratories in the UK and USA.

Making sustainable air freshening choices

For all premises - and particularly washrooms - first impressions count and can begin even before people see if a venue is clean. The sense of smell is the strongest of the five senses and one of the body’s front-line defence mechanisms, designed to set off alarm bells if a foul smell is detected.

“From staff to visitors, trust in the cleanliness and safety of a venue can be negatively impacted if it smells bad, as they will wonder why, and suspect that it is not hygienic,” said P-Wave’s sales and marketing manager, Mark Wintle. “Foul smells in any building are typically caused by the presence of bacteria which has been left to grow through either inadequate or infrequent cleaning procedures. While the washroom may be the cause of the worst odours in a building, improving the air quality and freshness throughout premises is essential.”

Passive air freshenersa sustainable choice

“Passive air fresheners not only deliver exceptional and consistent fragrance, but also represent a sustainable choice as they are easily recyclable, don’t require batteries and avoid the use of potentially harmful aerosols,” continued Mark Wintle. “Placing them where there is good air-flow positively enhances the consumer experience.”

The highly fragranced and 100% recyclable Eco Air freshener is a powerful passive air freshener that can be used standalone or inside an Eco Air cabinet. Ideally placed near a door or any space with good air flow, the open-air design ensures maximum surface area exposure for effective and efficient fragrance release. The refill has also been designed to fit a number of other manufacturer's dispensers, so that refills can be switched without having to change units.

Another passive freshener option is the easy to install P-Curve, which is claimed to deliver up to 50 times more fragrance than a standard toilet rim stick. Full of

fragrance and 100% recyclable, it can be placed almost anywhere - on doors, bins, desks, walls, and even in the car. In addition, P-Wave also stocks the flexible Hang Tag, which can be hung almost anywhere, features 100% more fragrance than typical air fresheners and keeps any area smelling cleaner, longer.

P-Wave has been solving the most common hygiene issue in urinals for years, as randomly splashed urine causes a headache for cleaners, plus a bad smell and a reduction in hygiene standards. P-Wave’s highly fragranced Slant6 urinal screen delivers a new angle on splash prevention, coupled with a major step forward in urinal deodorising technology.

“At P-Wave, we’re passionate about the environment and recognise the importance of introducing ecofriendly products into the marketplace,” concluded Mark Wintle. “That’s why all of our air freshener refills are 100% recyclable and can simply be placed in your plastic recycle bin after 30 days. As innovators in the industry, we understand that cleanliness and hygiene are the most important aspects of managing premises, and with years of experience and a consultative approach, we can make recommendations on how best to maintain great smelling premises.”

Our mission: We bring colour, protection and function to surfaces.

This makes us the ideal partner when it comes to disinfecting surfaces. With our mobile spraying units, the most common disinfectants can be applied to surfaces quickly, easily and even over large areas. In this way, we support people through our innovation and contribute to an effective reduction of the spread of viruses.

In addition to direct human-to-human transmission, contaminated surfaces also pose a risk of transmitting viruses and pathogens. Studies show that SARS-CoV-2 viruses can survive for several days on surfaces that we come into daily contact with. Spraying technology allows a comprehensive surface coating with disinfectant – subsequently the microbial presence of bacteria, fungi or viruses can be reduced.

Washroom hygiene has a number of challenges - washrooms are usually characterised by narrow spaces that make cleaning difficult and slow down operations, and storage space for cleaning equipment is usually very limited. TTS has developed Lampo, an innovative system for the transportation of tools in trolleys. Thanks to Lampo even the most compact trolley can now be fully equipped to create a complete cleaning station. Operators can quickly switch from one tool to another using the same handle.

Lampo, combined with the double bucket trolley Nickita, is the best combination for operation in tiny spaces. Nickita is compact, light and manoeuvrable. In addition, Nickita can be equipped with 15 and 25 litre buckets. Colour-coded buckets allow proper risk management while the ergonomic handle facilitates easy

Workspaces can be breeding grounds for viruses and bacteria. With normality slowly returning, many workplaces have started to welcome back their workforces. But with this return to work, now more than ever, employees have concerns around workplace hygiene.

The spread of germs in the workplace, through the frequent touching of surfaces, including kettles, fridge doors and doorhandles, is something cleaning staff will be all too familiar with. With hygiene top of mind, fragranced disinfectants and cleaners, such as Zoflora, are perfect solutions to work into workplace cleaning regimes. Not only does Zoflora kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria including COVID-19, but it offers over 30 fragrances in the range, varying from fresh to floral.

Given the nature of workplaces and the available surfaces on which germs can

breed - not to mention odours that are hard to control - Zoflora has various formats from multipurpose concentrate to disinfecting mists and multipurpose cleaners to meet all cleaning needs. From disinfecting meeting rooms in between meetings and keeping reception areas clean, to high traffic areas such as washrooms and kitchens where odour control is key, this fragranced disinfectant

manual handling. Moreover, the stackable frame allows stocking more than one trolley in one single storage closet, thus saving space.

offers an effective way to keep workplaces clean, leaving a long-lasting scent.

Neutralising strong odours in the workplace is an important part of hygiene perception. In fact, studies have shown that employees who work in the presence of a pleasant-smelling air freshener are more productive and content.

Effective washroom solutions enhance customer perceptions

Businesses have realised that keeping their washrooms clean is just the start, and that creating a pleasant and hygienic environment will have a positive effect on customers, guests and employees. But therein lies the problem: the range of facilities and equipment required to do this can fall beyond the capabilities of in-house teams or the remit of building service contractors. Instead, businesses are turning to specialist suppliers like Zenith Washroom Solutions, now part of Diversey’s UK business, for support.

Good washroom management will always be based around regular cleaning to maximise hygiene, remove unsightly soiling and prevent unpleasant odours. Choosing the right combination of products is important, whether these be for routine or problemsolving tasks. Ready to use products can be convenient, especially for occasional use, but using concentrates to prepare solutions onsite for routine tasks can help to reduce costs with many other sustainability benefits. Diversey can advise on the best combination from its extensive range.

But alongside traditional washroom amenities it is now commonplace, especially in retail and hospitality, to find baby changing facilities, air fragrance devices, vending machines, and a whole range of other equipment designed to improve the ambiance and enhance perceptions of cleanliness.

Since the start of the pandemic, for example, many businesses have requested

ways to eliminate viruses, bacteria and other pathogens from the air while also improving its overall quality and adding pleasant fragrances. This can create a safer and enhanced environment but requires specialist equipment that must be configured and serviced correctly by qualified technicians to maintain efficient performance.

Demand for improved sustainability is also driving change, as typified by the growth of waterless urinals. The switch is rarely simple and effective solutions might incorporate devices to deal with the urine and residues, prevent splashback and eliminate odours. Solving washroom problems like this is an increasingly specialist task.

Another key issue is waste disposal and management, which is covered by numerous regulations. Feminine hygiene waste and used nappies can only be disposed of by registered carriers who ensure compliance and keep on top of any necessary paperwork. It is a burden that most businesses will want to pass on to experienced service providers.

These examples help to explain why businesses are turning to specialist suppliers such as Zenith Washroom Solutions. The business has almost 20 years’ experience in delivering high performance solutions that enhance service levels while controlling and reducing costs. Its services and carefully chosen products complement and augment routine cleaning operations. A national

network of depots and service engineers offers customers direct access to a team with local experience and knowledge. The combination of Diversey and Zenith Washroom Solutions offers customers a complete set of products, equipment and services from a single source or one-stop shop.

Washrooms always have a significant impact on customer perceptions. And the pandemic has heightened and highlighted the importance of hygiene. Building on the base of good cleaning with additional amenities and facilities can make a real difference that customers will notice and appreciate. WWW.DIVERSEY.COM

PROCHEM Europe is introducing post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) packaging to its product ranges. Chemical product manager, Parag Patel, said: “We all are aware of the huge amount of plastics being used in everyday items. Too much ends up in the ocean or in landfill instead of being recycled. While all our plastic containers are recyclable, the aim remains to continue lessening Prochem’s footprint and that means reducing the use of virgin plastics…Our supplier offered 30% and 100% PCR containers so going with the 100% PCR version not only affords us the most sustainable options but future-proofs Prochem against any changes made to the plastic tax.”

Prochem’s PCR packaging roll-out commences with the Prochem Natural range and non-hazardous products. 5 Litre 100% PCR containers were also introduced in March for the E457 Natural Multi-Surface Floor Cleaner and S760 Liquid Defoamer production.

Rawlins secures rights for FogPod

DENIS Rawlins has secured the exclusive UK rights to distribute FogPod. Born out of the COVID-19 pandemic, FogPod was created by a father and son team who wanted to bring innovative, cost-effective sanitation devices to the market, to make the fogging process accessible to all. The devices use micro-fogging technology to disperse micro water particles, in the form of fog. With the correct chemistry, this process destroys 99.999% of all known germs, bacteria, pathogens, and viruses. The FogPod devices can be used with fellow British innovation, GermErase, a powerful, scientifically-proven disinfectant that has been proven to destroy the live SARS-CoV-2 virus in under 30 seconds.
