IMPACT AID FORMS

Local school districts receive basic support payments for federally connected students. Basic support payments for federally connected children compensate school districts for educating students whose parents or legal guardians reside and/or work on federal property, including children of members of the uniformed services. A school district can use a Federal Impact Aid Survey Card to count its federally connected children. A Federal Impact Aid Survey Card is a U.S. Department of Education-approved form for counting the school district’s federally connected children. The school district provides a form to parents for each enrolled child at the beginning of the school year. Please complete and return the Impact Aid form distributed by your school division. credit: Kimberly Simpson

SEPTEMBER IS SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH

SEPT 6, OCT 3 | 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM Little Hall/FAP Classroom 2

If you would like to learn more about suicide prevention, or are in need of support and counseling, please reach out to the Community Counseling Program at 703-784-2570 and make an appointment to meet with one of our licensed counselors.

Suicide is a problem that touches the lives of many of us. You may know someone, such as a friend, family member, or coworker who has attempted or died by suicide. Being aware of how to react when someone we know may be thinking about taking their life is an important way to be able to take action to help keep them safe. The Community Counseling Program offers psycho-educational workshops and support to commands and individuals who would like to learn more about suicide prevention, warning signs, and response. We also offer counseling services for people who have lost someone to suicide.

Connect to Protect: Support is Within Reach Article by HQ MCCS. For more resources go to: www.usmc-mccs.org

• Accept what others have experienced without •judgment.Resistthe temptation to problem-solve.

• Know your military and community resources. Take steps year-round to “Connect to Protect” with Marines and Families. Join your units or installations by participating in suicide prevention activities and programs.

• Listen when they want to talk.

Connect with self:

How can you Connect to Protect?

• Express care and concern.

Marines and families can connect with others by using an approach called OARS, which stands for: Open Questions, Affirming, Reflective Listening, and Summarizing. Open-ended questions guide the conversation and limit yes/no answers. Open-ended questions show curiosity, genuine interest, and demonstrate active listening. Example: “How would you like things to be different?” Affirmations focus on a particular goal, value, effort, or strength of the individual. Affirmations demonstrate support. Example: “You handled yourself really well in that situation.”

Connect with others:

• Reassure them.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. This year’s theme, Connect to Protect, highlights the importance of connecting fellow Marines, leaders, family, friends, and the community to available resources on suicide prevention.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

• Participate in spiritual or community activities and •groups.Volunteer for causes or organizations that you care •about.Spend time with friends and family members— whether in person or virtually.

• Encourage them to get help and stay in touch with friends and family.

• Plan activities you can enjoy together.

Reflective listening involves weighing the words the other person uses and the feelings expressed. If the reflection is off the mark, the other person can correct the misunderstanding. Example: “It sounds like you feel worthless in this situation.” Summarizing ensures the listener understood what the individual meant and allows for clarification if needed.Examples: “Let me see if I understand so far,” or “Here is what I have heard. Tell me if I’ve missed anything.”

If you are concerned someone is in crisis and you think it’s an emergency, don’t delay in responding. Call the duty (if the Marine lives in the barracks) or report the post immediately to your chain of command. If you believe the person is suicidal, call 911 or 988. If the situation is concerning but not an emergency, give the person options to talk to someone on the phone, online, or in person:

Military Crisis Line: 988 and Press 1
