CASE STUDY Metalworking: $490K Annual Savings Reducing Consumption and Biological Issues Machining Engines and Transmissions QUAKERAL® 350 The Challenge

The Benefits

An OEM in Canada producing engines and transmissions for use in various vehicles was experiencing multiple problems with their competitive coolant. The customer was suffering from major biological and foaming issues, excessive costs due to high turnover rates, required tank side additives (biocides, pH adjuster & defoamer) and unscheduled partial dumps. They approached Quaker Houghton for a solution with the following requirements:

By switching to QUAKERAL® 350, the customer experienced an annual savings of about $490,000 due to the following improvements: system usage by an average of 35% in • Decreased 6 systems equaling about $365K annually productivity and eliminated downtime, • Increased saving the customer $75K annually

new GEN III secondary amine free coolant resistant to additives required. In the past defoamer, • Amicrobiological • No growth including mycobacteria biocides and other additives were required to maintain these system on a regular basis, which • Elimination of foam problems saved them $50K annually • Reduction of downtime and overall costs Process and Equipment

The Solution Quaker Houghton’s team of experts in the product development laboratory performed extensive studies in the development of QUAKERAL® 350, a GEN III, secondary amine free product for the customer. QUAKERAL® 350 met all of the customer’s requirements and their 6 systems were converted to the coolant. Quaker Houghton was able to decrease system usage and eliminate downtime. In the past, the filters would rapidly fail due to high microbiological activity in several of the systems. Partial dumps would be required to get these departments running again. No additives have been required to maintain the systems and the customer has been very happy with the cost and process improvements.
