January 2019 | The Covey

Dear Friends and Fellow Members, First, let me wish each of you a Happy New Year and your best year ever in 2019. I also want to thank each of you for contributing to the Employee Holiday fund this year. Each year this is distributed to our hourly employees as a “thank you” for a job well done. Our employees also enjoyed a holiday party off premises where they were able to relax and enjoy each other’s company before the peak season begins. Our mini-season from October through December has allowed us to fine tune our staffing needs and training so that we are fully prepared for the season ahead. The response to the service team and food quality in the new clubhouse has been very positive this fall. Our F&B team was eager to host our forthcoming New Year’s Eve party with reservations well above 500 participants. Chef Reza and Carl have promised regular menu changes with two already this fall and at least two more during the peak season while always offering the freshest of everything available. The event calendar for the next three months are full of something for everyone. We look forward to seeing you at many of them. Scott and his team have the tennis court area in top shape and are ready to assist you with every part of your game. As usual, they have a full schedule of tennis team events co-mingled with some other fun events throughout the season. Dan and his team are ready to go with a beautifully stocked pro shop and a full staff that is ready to meet your every need. Joe and his team have the golf courses in very good shape and they are ready for upcoming tournaments, events and regular play. Joe, Dan and Mike have also been very involved in our golf course project from contractor selection to

grass selection. Speaking of grass selections. The sub-committee worked on this all summer and their recommendation was adopted unanimously by the Golf and Green committee as well as the Club Board at their December meeting. Our intention is to use Bimini grass on the tee, fairways and roughs along with Tif Eagle on the greens. As I write this newsletter, we are very close to a selection on the general contractor and irrigation installation company as well. We will share that information as soon as we go under contract. Lisa is finally about to have her addition begin at the fitness center. If you have not been there in a while, we urge caution around the construction area. Our final permits were received this week and we will begin construction in earnest right after the start of the New Year. In the meantime, Lisa has tons of classes scheduled for every level of fitness. On top of all of the above, we continue to work diligently on the Bundling (merger) of the Club and the POA. We are working on the bylaws, merger agreement, membership plan, transition Board, the election process and the nominating process for the merged entity. We are making tremendous progress and want to invite all members to the Town Hall meetings scheduled for January 7th. As usual there will be a morning session, lunch session and a late afternoon session. Please plan to attend one of these sessions to be well informed. Finally, we also continue to work on plans for the pickle ball court, bocce ball court and other smaller amenities for your enjoyment. Thank you again for your support of our employees. With warm regards,

B U L C PRESIDENT A REPORT FROM OUR

poa PRESIDENT A REPORT FROM OUR

Dear Friends and Fellow Members, It seems like many of us just returned and it’s already January! With the early bad weather in the northern states and Canada, coming back to Quail Ridge and our winter refuge was an easy decision. As you have returned, we hope that you have noticed the positive energy that exists throughout the Community. While it is always fun to reconnect with friends and fellow members that you have not seen all summer, this year just feels like everyone is more enthusiastic about the season ahead. Maybe it’s because of the new clubhouse but I think that was just a catalyst to help us to begin to imagine all of the possible areas that we can address as a community to make us better. To that end, the POA Board continues to work with the Club Board, Finance, Membership, Bylaws and Bundling Committees toward a complete understanding of the steps needed to merge our

two entities into one. That includes a completely new membership program, new articles of incorporation, and a full rewrite of our bylaws. These committees and our management team have done tremendous work in order to vote on this at our annual meeting in March. Ahead of that, we will provide regular updates, including the State of the Club Town Hall on January 7th, where both presidents, our Bundling Committee chairperson, management staff and our lead attorney on this issue will all be available for the presentation and important Q&A. We will follow that meeting with smaller focus groups to make sure everyone is well informed prior to the vote. The other major issue that we are working on is the negotiation of a new bulk cable agreement for our community. Our management team has completed all of the due diligence during the summer and we have currently narrowed our options to Comcast and Hotwire. Together these companies share more than 95% of the bulk cable service in our area.

[ From the top of the Nest ] We received the initial bids, which were used to build this year’s operating and capital budgets. We believe there is still an opportunity to improve the terms and pricing, and we have engaged a local attorney that specializes in bulk cable contracts for communities to assist in finalizing this offering. The old contract only provided for basic cable with a minor upgrade and no internet. Members had to individually upgrade their cable and add the internet of their choice. Our negotiations will allow us to offer a bulk rate for both cable and internet at a significantly reduced price over what most of you are paying. We will also have the entire community upgraded from the old coaxial cable to fiber optics to further enhance your reception and internet speeds. I want to thank our Finance Committee and management team for their efforts on this year’s budget. They worked diligently to make sure that the budget allows our team to continue to improve every area of our operations at a very minimal cost. The POA Board will be voting on this budget at their December meeting. Once you factor in the potential overall savings, your personal cable bill should remain flat or even decrease slightly. I applaud the committee for their efforts.

lifeblood of the community in terms of property values, project funding and more. We are pleased to report that our real estate operation will finish the year with more than 90 transactions and 57+ new members in this calendar year. This department will also produce a profit of more than $180,000 after funding approximately $175,000 in marketing costs. This is a great story but it would not be possible without you continuing to invite your friends and family to discover what Quail Ridge is all about. Let’s “keep the vibe alive” this year as we move forward with the bundling of our community and the improvements to the fitness facility and golf course. Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve as your President. I wish you the happiest of holidays and a wonderful New Year. With warm regards,

A REPORT FROM OUR

general M ANAGER Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! My sincerest hope is that this will be a happy healthy year for each of you. I would like to echo Mr. Leider’s comments about the employee Holiday fund and thank each of you that contributed. It is a real difference maker for many of our staff members. We are ready for a great peak season to begin. Your management team has spent the summer and fall making sure that we had all of the team members in place for your best year ever at Quail Ridge. We have a full calendar of activities planned for your enjoyment from January through April. This year’s calendar has many of the events a little closer together due to the pending irrigation and renovation of the south course. I would like to think Steve Smith (Green Committee Chair) and Ronnie Grove (Golf Committee Chair) for working all summer and fall with our management team on the grass selection, contractor, and irrigation company selection. They have visited many clubs with us and attended way more meetings than they probably wanted to, but the due diligence work should be rewarded with a great golf course renovation. Just a reminder that we will be beginning to spray out the south golf course in February. It will remain very playable right up until its closure on April 1st. In addition, Dan has worked very hard to secure additional courses on a reciprocal basis for our members to play once we have fully closed the South course.

January 2019 | The Covey

We are excited to finally be underway on the Fitness Center project and we will be publishing a timeline for the project in January. Lisa and I have also completed considerable due diligence on the equipment package for the renovated facility and we will be making a recommendation to the Fitness committee in the near future. Our membership continues to grow due to a very fast pace of real estate sales. Our last fiscal year concluded in October of 2018 and we finished with sixty-seven (67), new members. That is phenomenal considering an average year is 40 new members. We are also off to a great start with thirteen (13) new members in the first two months of our new fiscal year. We encourage you to continue to refer your friends and family to look at real estate and membership here at Quail Ridge. Finally, our largest pending project is the Bundling Vote currently scheduled for the annual meeting in March of this coming year. Please see the article on this subject further in the newsletter for more information. We encourage your attendance at our Town Hall meetings on January 7th at one of three scheduled meetings to learn more about this very important issue. We look forward to seeing you at the club soon and we are committed to make this our best year ever. With warm regards

Director of Membership & M arketing A REPORT FROM OUR

I

have truly enjoyed my first few months here at Quail Ridge. I must express my sincere gratitude for the warm welcome expressed to me by so many members. I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this amazing team and working hard to market this beautiful Club! Since my recent start, I have created a strong integrated marketing plan which is actively being deployed. This includes digital advertising, traditional print advertising, broadcast and social media, and public relations exposure, which extends the reach of the Quail Ridge brand to a targeted lifestyle audience. The Marketing and Membership department will begin the New Year by celebrating both the past and the future of Quail Ridge. Dynamic new print ads have been designed as part of a strategic cross-platform marketing campaign aimed at driving interest and web traffic to our website (quailridgecc.com). Prospective members will be inspired by the Quail Ridge legacy of storied players under pinning a Club that is equally focused on catering to the next generation. Look for us being featured in the January edition of Links Living Magazine with a 2-page editorial highlighting services, programs and facilities designed to satisfy a broad demographic.

This will be complemented by a robust digital campaign as we look to engage potential members in a number of target markets and push for opportunities to showcase our beautiful Club and amenities. On the membership side of things, we are actively developing a new App to be launched in early 2019. This will enhance Club services by adding dining and tennis court reservations, tee times, a club directory and valet service requests to your phone. We are very excited about this easy to use App. Also, don’t forget to engage with the Club through social media. Likes and comments on our Facebook pages are the perfect way to share positive experiences about the Quail Ridge lifestyle with your social network. New media provides an unprecedented capability for members to personally elevate brand awareness for their country club which also builds brand equity for the overall Quail Ridge community. Finally, in the world of new media, having active links embedded in online content also improves Search Engine Optimization (SEO), leading prospective members to click through to the Club website to learn more about the Quail Ridge lifestyle. All of this programming makes for a very active and visible brand which is key when connecting with current and future members. With warm regards, Brian Merbler Director of Membership & Marketing

Bundling

new model for golf course developments Part II

As

previously communicated in an E-news, the Bundling Committee has met multiple times this past fall in order to prepare this issue for a vote at the annual meeting in March of this coming year. The Committee's focus has been on four key issues: - Merging of the POA/ Club Bylaws (with Legal Counsel) including the new membership categories - A merger Document outlining the steps to complete the transition - The completion of a TAA (technical advisory assistance) by our Auditors for consideration by the State - The creation of a Transition Board based upon a successful vote Let's discuss each of these: Merging of the Bylaws: The Bundling Committee has been very busy reviewing Counsel's work on this task. It is a key component of the merger and is a complex task. The Bundling Committee recently appointed a Bylaws subcommittee to help speed up this task and review a draft copy of the Bylaws. Assuming the draft is complete, it will be sent to the entire Bundling Committee and Coordinating committee for their review and comments. Merger Agreement document: Our Legal counsel will complete this draft immediately following the completion of the Bylaws. It is intended to outline the path for a successful transition plan including the timing (March vote, October 2019 effective date), Transition Board, Election of the new Board, formation of the Nominating Committee, consolidation of certain committees and more. TAA Letter: The TAA letter has been sent to the state for consideration. It outlines our contemplated merger, the new membership plans and asks for guidance about potential sales tax relief.

10 |

January 2019 | The Covey

Transition Board: The Bundling Committee is recommending that the Transition Board would be created by merging the seven Executive Committee members from the POA, four Executive members from the Club, the Committee chairs from the Golf and Green (one), House and Marketing and Membership along with the two past Presidents from each organization. This group would manage both entities in place of the current Boards and the Coordinating committee until the first election of a new Board in February or March of 2020. The other discussions to date include the formal adoption of a new membership plan (Primary, Intermediate and Full) with the ability to upgrade and downgrade and the restructuring of our governance model. The Nominating Committee would be selected in a manner as we currently select the Nominating Committee for the Club. Each Board member would present 3-5 candidates for consideration and the Board would vote for their top five and two additional alternates. The Nominating Committee would then interview a recommend a full slate of twelve to fifteen candidates for the first Board including their recommended terms of 1-3 years. There would also be a method for additional candidates to submit their names for consideration. In addition, the past POA President and the current Condominium President would also serve as members of the Board. The Executive Committee of the newly elected Board would be comprised of the four Officers along with three additional Board members. The Bundling Committee has reviewed all committees from the current entities and will be making a recommendation for consolidation in an attempt to improve our Governance model.

[ Featured Article ] The Bundling Committee also suggests that the Condominium Association Bylaws also be modified to remove the at-large members and appoint the President as a member of the POA Board. In addition, there is a consideration that the ARB become a committee that reports to the Condominium Association. We recommend that the Insurance and Safety along with the Landscaping Committees would become joint committees reporting to both entities. As you can see, there is much to do in order to achieve a vote in March of this coming year. Our goal is to provide a high level review of this information at the State of the Club meetings on January 7th followed by additional focus group meetings and a more formal presentation to both Boards. Regarding Bundling, there are a number of questions from members directed to Board and Committee members alike. Of those, the one common question is "why" should we do this? The following is a concise answer which will be expanding on in the near future. Why Consider "Bundling" at Quail Ridge? Over the past two years, through various platforms, we began the conversation of possibly bundling (merging) the Club and POA. At last year's Town Hall meetings, the immediate feedback received on this topic was positive, so much so, that the Club and POA Boards authorized the hiring of an attorney to guide the Community through this process. Furthermore, the Boards formed an ad-hoc committee dedicated to pursuing this project. As the 2019 town hall meetings are set for the first week of January, we will be updating the Community on the progress made and next steps in the process as we move towards a March vote.

So what are the major benefits to the Community; or, stated differently, Why Consider "Bundling"?

Below are the primary areas which would benefit greatly from Bundling the Community: - Improve and simplify our Governance Model - Streamline our operations and reporting structure; eliminate duplicative meetings - Consolidate our Capital needs - Improve our overall financial health by taking advantage of the economic benefits associated with bundling - Modernize and address membership categories We believe that each of these points represents solid grounds for Quail Ridge to be merged into a single entity. Stay tuned as more information will be made available in the coming weeks.

A REPORT FROM OUR

director of club operations The fall season, also referred to as our mini-season, turned out to be a phenomenal start! Service expectations

have been exceptionally high this year and we have responded by opening six nights a week for dinner versus the usual five nights made available in previous years. It seems reasonable to conclude, that when we are serving 250 a la carte meals during October, we must be doing something right for our membership. We kicked off this season with our famous wine expo. Members had the opportunity to visit with 28 different vendors and sample over 200 wine options. I can see why they call Quail Ridge a drinking club! We continued the fun with our member’s Welcome Back Party which featured a Polynesian inspired theme. The décor, music and food were certainly a big success by most accounts. Members were greeted with a traditional lei and an “adult” snow cone. Our team was thrilled to serve the 500 members who joined us for the big night. Before we knew it, Thanksgiving was here and we warmly welcomed 250 members to a bountiful feast for the ages. Families of all ages came to celebrate and give thanks for each other. There are several new additions to the food and beverage operations that you will encounter around the clubhouse this season. First, our international staff have been fully trained and are eager to get to know you while providing you with only exceptional levels of service. A delicious new menu will be introduced which will be the third menu change already from mid-October to January. We recently opened our newest casual outlet, Café Perq where our members can come by in the morning after exercising, before golf or just simply socialize with each other to get a great cup of coffee along with fresh homemade pastries and much more. Our fresh fish program has become so popular that Chef Reza has added two more boats to our program. Now we can officially say that Quail Ridge has a fleet of five boats that are busy fishing for us on a daily basis to bring us only the freshest catch of the day. I believe it’s fair to say that our members have grown accustomed to experiencing this new level of fresh seafood! Lastly, the wine list has some new additions including Bordeaux, Super Tuscan, and some great addition by the glass as well to encourage the members to try some new wines.

Carl V. Horace - Director of Club Operations

The Clubhouse Team had the pleasure of Welcoming Back the Membership with a party that included Polynesian dancers and performers, fire, an abundance of food and beverages, and an atmosphere full of laughter and smiles. We also had the privilege of working alongside the Golf, Tennis, and Fitness teams, to welcome members back with their opening parties. We look forward to a fun-filled and packed 2019 season. With a full calendar and surprises along the way, we want to encourage you to participate in as many events and activities that you can. We have events for all including wine tastings and dinners, concerts, lectures, art classes, trivia and bingo game nights, and even so much more. However, don’t forget to join us in the Quail’s Nest for both lunch and dinner or grab a beer and a burger over on Perq Terrace. Also this year at Quail Ridge we have grown the member ran activities from the years prior. Duplicate Bridge, Chorus, Garden Club, Bible Study and other clubs are still continuing to grow and bring in more members. The Activities Committee has worked hard to create new opportunities for the members and have added Dancing, Running, Movie Club, and many others to the list. Come find an activity that you enjoy and start to build long lasting friendships with the Quail Ridge Family. Let us utilize the beautiful new clubhouse to its best potential and all the offerings that we offer. Nothing brings people together like great food and drinks. Tips

with

Director of Instruction, Denise Lavigne Hello Members, I am very happy to be part of the Golf team at Quail Ridge for the winter season. During this time of year, the wind usually plays a big factor during a round of golf. The wind not only plays havoc with your golf ball, but can also effect your ability to make a proper swing.

[Golf] [ Around Quail Ridge] [ Golf]

Golf

Here are a few tips to maintain your balance and keep the ball low through the wind: • Widen your stance to improve stability through the golf swing • Choke down on the club for more control • Position the ball slightly back in your stance - towards your trail foot • Keep your body weight forward throughout your swing • Take to a 3/4 backswing to maintain control - see illustration #1 • Finish low in a “Y” position with a flat front wrist position at impact - see illustration #2

Illustration #1

Illustration #2

Drill Place a tee 3 inches in front of the ball on your target line and try to hit the ball and the tee during the swing. This will help you feel the steeper angle of approach through the ball which de-lofts the club for a lower trajectory. Have a good practice! www.DeniseLavigneGolf.com

A REPORT FROM OUR

[ Spa & Fitness]

director of Spa & Fitness Change is Good! Year after year, losing weight and getting in shape are the top two New Year’s resolutions. Recent studies show that 42% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, yet only 8% achieve their goals. In lieu of those stats, should we give up on New Year’s weight loss resolutions? My answer…NO!!! There is plenty of medical literature highlighting the importance of goal setting, especially when it comes to weight loss. To reach your goals you must make changes. It's time to bring the hammer down! Quail Ridge members are already very active, so to meet weight loss or fitness resolutions there must be a change. Your body is accustomed to the workload that originally taxed it to the max. Remember — to see continual results, you must continue to challenge your body. Your Spa and Fitness team is here to help you make those changes. Our trainers can design a program for newbies and re-write programs for regular gym users. We can make sure that you are working at the correct heart rate, using the right weights and switch out your workout so you are challenging your body in different ways. In January we are introducing a High Intensity Interval Training Class—HIIT will help you burn calories, raise your metabolic rate, lose fat, gain muscle and improve oxygen consumption. Don't get stuck in a rut! Come by the fitness center we can help you set your goals; then push yourself, change it up and you will see the weight-loss results you want. Respectfully, Lisa Haggas Director of Spa & Fitness

DIRECTOr of Communit y A REPORT FROM OUR

Safet y

Several years back, we implemented a program at

Quail Ridge called the “Vial of Life”. The Vial of Life, included a medical questionnaire and also a list of existing and past medical conditions. There is also an area for you to fill in all of the medications and dosages that you are currently taking. After completing the list, it is suggested that you place it back in the plastic bag and tape it to the refrigerator. Emergency personnel will need this information when they arrive. Having this information preprinted and readily available, will help to expedite and ensure that you receive the proper treatment. Please review and update your information each year. If you are in need of the Vial of Life Kits, they are available from the receptionist in the Business Center. Your Community Safety Department continues to be committed to the Quail Ridge Emergency Medical Response Program. On November 21, we held a CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator) first aid training/certification class. This class represented a combination of 30 new as well re-certifications for employees. We now have 128 employees that are currently certified. I would like to provide you with some helpful tips in case you experience a medical emergency. Your first telephone call should be to 911. Your next call should be placed to the Community Safety Emergency phone number at (561) 737-6000. Please remember, our security officers are well trained in first aid and can supply you with medical support until Fire Rescue arrives. All Security Patrol Vehicles carry oxygen, cardiac defibrillators as well as other life sustaining equipment. When placing a call to 911 or the Quail Ridge Safety Department, please be prepared to answer the following questions: • • • •

What is the nature of injury? When and where did the injury occur? The age of the injured person? Is the injured person breathing and/or bleeding?

36 |

January 2019 | The Covey

Most of all, try to stay calm, help is on the way. We currently have AED’s strategically located throughout our property. Time is critical when cardiac arrest occurs. Static’s have shown if CPR is performed and an AED is applied within the first two minutes, the victim’s chance of survival will rise from 5 to 80 percent. If AED and CPR are not applied within four to six minutes, the chance of survival is drastically reduced. We have received a few requests for CPR/AED First Aid training for our members. Anyone interested in learning this valuable lifesaving skill may contact me by phone or email. Based on the membership’s level of interest, we would select a date for future group classes. Rules and Regulations as it pertains to pets: • Pets must be kept quiet when inside the home. • They must be leashed and attended to at all times when outside of your home. • Droppings must be picked up and disposed of by the owner. • Pets are not permitted in or around the swimming pools. They must be kept away from the golf course, clubhouse, fitness center and tennis complex. • Most important, no owner’s pets shall cause any nuisance to other unit owners. Please remember, not everyone is a pet person. Be mindful of others space and do not allow pets to approach or jump on other people. Bicycles: When using the cart paths on bicycles, please be especially mindful of pedestrians, being sure to announce your approach from behind. The Rules and Regulations clearly state “all bicycles must be equipped with a bell or horn.” We still continue to receive many complaints of near misses when cyclists approaching walkers from behind without giving them warning. Please assist us in keeping everyone safe! Eric Price Director of Community Safety

AROUND Quail Ridge Member Spotlight

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Select Sector SPDR Funds, George Gaspari, an original Director of the Funds, participated at the closing bell ceremonies. George was the Chairman of the Board until 2015 and continues to be an active member of the Board. Dolores Gaspari accompanied him on stage.

Quail Ridge Recognized Once Again For Environmental Excellence

Quail Ridge Country Club has retained its designation as a "Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary" through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program. Quail Ridge Country Club was designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2000 and is one of 904 courses in the world to currently be designated as such. The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, Mexico, and Southeast Asia have achieved certification in the program. "Quail Ridge Country Club has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for preserving the natural heritage of the area by protecting the local watershed and providing a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property," said Christine Kane, Executive Director at Audubon International. "To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas," explained Kane. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management. Courses go through a recertification process every three years.

QRBC participated in an ACBL-wide “Instant Match Game, on October 31st, in which Gold points were awarded for winners. High scorers were Ann Gordon & Ingeborg Mimnaugh playing North/ South and Ann Spizzirro & Uky Perakos playing East/West. Aspiring Life Masters were truly, madly, GREEN with envy for those precious gold points. QRBC also took part in STaC Games on Monday, November 26th and Wednesday, November 28th. STaC is an acronym for Sectional Tournaments at Clubs. When a club participates in STaC games, that club receives "hand records" (pre-dealt bridge hands) in order to prepare bridge hands identical to every other club participating at the same time and day. Silver points are awarded. First place winners Monday night were Chuck Holderness and Brent Elmore (East/West) and Ruth Carson & Pam Baugh (North South). Holderness/Elmore placed first in the Invitational District (45 tables) and Carson/Baugh were 6th.

Bridge Club News

Wednesday afternoon first place winners here at Quail Ridge and overall for the district (145 tables) in A, B and C were Douglas Carlson and Linda Russell with a 66.67% game (14.06 points). First place East/West team for QRBC was Libby and Jack Vollmer, who were also twelfth in C with a 61.31% game. Sixteenth in C with a 60.12% game were Ted Finnigan and Bart Nixon. Ambitious bridge players attempt to score 50% or greater in a round of bridge, meaning that they are scoring at least an average game or better. Two players have recently achieved a game of greater than 70%, which is outstanding and signifies excellent play. Betty Babe & Delores Gaspari (pictured here) are our STARS. The Quail Ridge Bridge Club would like to invite ALL participants to attend our BRIDGE PARTY, January 9th. Bridge will begin at 2:00 P.M. and will be followed by cocktails and appetizers. Cost is $10/person and guests are invited to attend for $15. For more information, contact Diane Haden or Linda Randall.

Canasta At Quail Ridge

It started with a rumor. We heard that fifty people showed up at a local club to play Canasta. We said, “Canasta? I haven’t played that since I was a teenager.” Two weeks later Quail Ridge announced the death of former long-time member Madeleine Albanese. Many of us remembered her fondly. Eileen Watson, Mary Fitzpatrick, Janet Bambrick and Cam Murphy unearthed and polished instructions from the games Madeleine had introduced years ago. We invited a few residents and summer members, selected Tuesday afternoons because “nothing else is going on”, and the game took off after Joyce Pleasant included an announcement in her eblasts.

Quail Ridge members are welcome and may bring their guests. Sign up to play or learn by calling Cam Murphy at 561-738-6717 or email calma@earthlink. net or text to 561-703-5980. We usually have 4 or 5 tables every week and, although places at the tables are assigned by request and in advance, rained-out golfers are always welcomed at the last minute.

Games include the two versions that Madeleine Albanese brought to Quail Ridge: a regular four player partnership game and a simpler version called Head & Foot that can be played with 3 or 4 persons. Head & Foot is easy to learn and those who played any version of Canasta in their youth quickly become expert. Some people stay with We started in the summer of 2017 and went co- Head & Foot while others graduate themselves to ed the following summer. Eileen Watson, Roe “Madeline’s Canasta”, a more challenging game. Bartow, Heather Strickland and Mary Fitzpatrick donated the equipment – decks of cards, Both Madeleine’s Canasta and Head & Foot are eastrays and shufflers. Cam Murphy and Lorraine ier to learn and not as complex as bridge.
