PRESIDENT WEISENSTEIN TO RETIRE AFTER SEVEN YEARS OF PRESIDENCY H

On Thursday, March 31, President Greg Weisenstein will end his tenure at West Chester University. After seven years, Weisnstein will be pursuing other opportuities along with his wife, Sandra, their three chrildren and 13 grandchildren.

Weisenstein, whose retirement will come in the middle of the semester, believes that the timing is right and that, as president, he has accomplished everything he set out to accomplish.

“We have accomplished, the campus community and I, have accomplished what we set out to accomplish when I became president over seven years ago,” said Weisentein While Weisenstein has accomplished much as president, he never had intentions of becoming a president. Initally, he aspired to be a professor or a dean. Most of his life was spent

focuing on that.

“I was ready to look at what was next,” said Weisenstein. “In that case, that was a provost position.”

After he had some experience as provost, he thought about becoming president.

Madeline Adler, the previous dean, had persuaded him to come to WCU, where he applied for his presidency.

Weisenstein says that he wouldn’t have been able to accomplish nearly as much as he did without support.

“I am very proud of my leadership team, “says Weisenstein. “I am very proud of everyone on campus for being able to accomplish what we’ve been able to do over the last seven plus years.”

While he was president, WCU became one of the most competitive public schools in the 14-school state system, beating out Penn State and University of Pittsburgh. With 16,600 Jose Mestre / Photography Editor

students, it is also the largest.

This fall, more than 14,000 students applied for a freshman class of 2,395, the university said, and incoming freshmen had an average GPA of 3.6.

The school has also added doctoral degrees, started offering programs in Center City Philadelphia, increased full-time tenured faculty by 23 percent and reached two-thirds of its $50 million fundraising goal.

The university has constantly been adding residence buildings and rennovating academic buildings. WCU is currently in the process of building a new buisness building and plans for a rennvation of Sykes and a new dining hall are in the works.

While Weisenstein is responsible for all of the positive changes seen in the past seven years, he says that his greatest accomplisment can be seen in the students and their performance.

“I am very proud of our students,” says Weinsenstein. “I am very proud of our alumni. They do great things.

Our students have volunteered around 900,000 hours to their community.”

Weisenstein specifically refers to students who go on to become politicians or work in the medical field and who go on to influence the lives of many people.

“I’m most proud of... the people who I’ve had the pleasure of working with, from students to members of the community,” said Weisenstein.

He goes on to say that one of the most important aspects of being president was the relationship he had with his students, and that watching them move forward from WCU and pursue different careers, while impacting the lives of the people around them is very important to him.

DESPITE LOW DELEGATE SUPPORT, STUDENTS STILL RALLY FOR SANDERS

H

illary Clinton and Donald Trump came out on top in the presidential primaries on Tuesday, March 15.

Clinton has now racked up a total of 1,139 delegates, with Trump coming in at 673. The Republican nominee will need to secure a total of 1,237 votes to win the nomination, while the Democratic nominee needs 2,383 to win.

Honorable mentions for the unofficial “Super Tuesday” go out to Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, who now stands at 825 delegates, and Republican nominee Ted Cruz, coming in at 410.

Tuesday brought an end to Marco Rubio’s campaign when he lost in his home state, Florida, and decided to suspend his campaign. Republican nominee John Kasich remains in the primary race with 143 delegates.

With Pennsylvania’s primaries looming closer and closer, students are starting to get more invested in the elections and the candidates.

A handful of West Chester University students were interviewed to get a better feel about how the primary elections and caucuses are affecting the millennial generation.

When asked how she would describe her overall impression of the primary elections thus far, sophomore Sam Postupack said it was “a whole bunch of hullabaloo.”

“It’s way too much craziness; people are nuts,” said Postupack.

Sophomore Apeayena Agbugui thinks the primaries have been “very interesting.”

“I think each candidate is interesting in their own individual way—some more than others,” said Agbugui. “I feel like there’s been a lot of attention driven to people who don’t deserve attention, really.”

With Clinton and Trump taking the leads in their respective parties, students were asked for their opinions specifically on those two candidates.

A number of ideas amongst students overlapped.

Many students believe a mjaority of Clinton’s sucess come from the strong focus on her gender.

Many common themes arose when students were asked for their opinion

“I don’t think he’d be good fit for our country or international relationships.

People like him in power have caused a lot of issues in the world historically.”

“I think people kind of focus on how she would be the first female president, and I don’t think diversity is the problem right now,” said sophomore Zahaeaa Davood. “We need somebody who can lead the country; she’s very corporate.”

Agbugui concurred.

“I’m all for a woman to be in the White House,” said Agbugui, “but when it comes down to a candidate who can cater to my needs, I don’t feel like Hillary really does that. She’s more big business-oriented.”

Many students did not seen Clinton as the most favorable option for the presidency. Although nobody interviewed strongly supported Clinton,

on Trump—specifically that he has a big mouth, which could potentially be very problematic for international relations.

“Trump is a bigot and an ***hole.

And I don’t think that’s an opinion, it’s more of a fact,” said sophmore Damien Yasipour. “I don’t think he’d be good fit for our country or international relationships. People like him in power have caused a lot of issues in the world historically.”

Postupack had similar thoughts.

“I think he’s way too caught up on his ego,” said Postupack. “I don’t think he’s focusing enough on important matters.”

racist, and he’s only going to benefit the wealthy.”

On the flip side, there were a couple people who endorsed Trump. Sophomore Morgan Newton described him as a “loose cannon,” but said after doing more research, he is who she would currently vote for.

Likewise, Stahlbeher said, “I feel like he has good ideas that people lose sight of in his stranger opinions. Also, Ted Cruz is a wing nut.”

Moving beyond the frontrunners, Sanders came up quite frequently amongst the interviewees.

When asked who she would currently vote for, Davood replied, “Feel the Bern. I think he’s one of the few candidates who has core values he hasn’t changed over the years; he’s been a civil rights activist and fought for women’s rights, and he’s not wishywashy. He hasn’t changed his ways and he doesn’t change to get votes.”

Yasipour had similar opinions when asked who he would vote for.

“Bernie, because he seems like the candidate actually looking out for the people and not just for an agenda,” said Yasipour.

Agbugui agreed.

“I’m voting for Bernie Sanders because I feel like he is the candidate I can most relate to, and he’s most for the people; not for the wealthy people, but the working class,” said Agbugui.

Newton described the election process as “a false sense of choice.”

“It’s kind of discouraging to feel as if my vote has no effect due to both the process by which delegates make votes and the lateness of PA’s part in the process,” said Yasipour.

According to Yasipour, he also believes that, “overall, this is a weak candidate pool and it worries me about this country.”

Postupack had similar ideas.

“I feel like when it comes to voting, I don’t know if I could choose the lesser of two evils,” said Postupack.

WOMEN LEADING UP PRESENTS PH “BE TRUE TO YOU” SEMINAR

n Friday, March 18, young women congregated in the ballrooms of Sykes Student Union for “Be True To You,” a seminar presented by Women Leading Up. Women Leading Up is a leadership organization that seeks to allow women to connect and grow as leaders.

The organization holds three events each semester as part of a Women Leading Up Leadership Series, sponsored by Rent-A-Car. These events have a focus on overcoming the tribulations that come with being a female in a leadership position.

The goal of the seminar was for participants to gain a better understanding of themselves in order to be successful in positional and relational leadership roles.

The event this past Friday saw women from all over campus, speakers prepared for the event, and free refreshments.

Many of the participants were active members of Greek life and donned their respective letters.

The seminar began as the event coordinator, Suzanne Hochberg, introduced the two guest speakers for the program, Dr. Jackie Hodes and Dr. Cheryl Neale-McFall.

Both Dr. Hodes and Dr. Neal-McFall are former assistant professors as well as counselor educators.

Dr. Hodes took the floor and began the discussion by defining leadership and addressing the importance of leadership skills in the real world.

When discussing the necessary qualities of a good leader, the audience offered up their own ideas, agreeing on the importance of confidence and the ability to accept constructive criticism.

Dr. Neale-McFall introduced the core activity of the seminar, titled “What Color Are You?”Each participant was given a score sheet with different personal characteristics, which, when ranked from one to four, added up to a corresponding color: your “true color.”

These colors were representative of different personalities, which corresponded to leadership styles. The goal of this exercise was to dissect the characteristics of your “true color” in the hopes of better understanding yourself and how others might view you.

The ballroom was alive with discussion, as the participating women calculated and analyzed their responses.

Dr. Hodes encouraged audience participation, asking the crowd which of their color characteristics proved to be strengths and weaknesses in real life.

“I learned a lot about myself as a leader, how I work with others, and the difference between how I view myself in comparison to how others view me.”

“It is important to not only understand yourself, but how others see you, too,” said Dr. Neale-McFall, explaining to the crowd the misconceptions that come with each “true color.”

The “true colors” were used throughout the seminar, as participants were encouraged to analyze the “true colors” of other people in their lives.

Dr. Hodes and Dr. Neale-McFall posed stimulating questions, including, “What are the ‘true colors’ of people you surround yourself with?” The audience shared their responses, and found that the people in their lives were perhaps more colorful than they originally realized. The purpose of the activity was to recognize that, in a

leadership position, it is important to understand and empathize with different types of people; different true colors.

“I learned a lot about myself as a leader, how I work with others, and the difference between how I view myself in comparison to how others view me,“ said Wermuth after the seminar.

The event ended as the speakers made their final remarks, emphasizing the importance of embracing personal strengths and weaknesses in order to be a successful leader.

PHI ALPHA, LGBTQA SERVICES PAIR UP TO HOST EVENT

T

his past Wednesday, March 16, the social work honor society Phi Alpha and the LGBTQA Services teamed up to give students, faculty, and staff an opportunity to become a LGBTQA Ally.

The event was hosted in Brandywine Hall Room 003 from 7:30 to 9:30pm.

LGBTQA stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and ally.

The Office of LGBTQA Services on campus provides information, resources, and support for programming to members of the university and community.

The unit was created in 1994 to assist students with issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

The LGBTQA Services trains faculty, staff and students to be allies to the LGBTQA campus community, and the training includes two parts.

Part one, which is referred to as LGBTQA 101, is an hour-long training session that provides participants with an overview of the LGBTQA history, terms, and current issues.

Some of the current issues that were discussed were LGBTQA youth homelessness, violence against LGBTQA

Typically parts one and two of the workshops are done separately, but the Phi Alpha and the LGBTQA Ally services decided to do both in one night so it would be easier for the students in attendance.

Once becoming an Ally, this means that people are providing a safe space for anyone dealing with issues in relation to sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.

They are there to provide resources and referrals to the best of their ability.

Carly Graziadei, who is a senior social work student and president of Phi Alpha, describes that an Ally must be committed to “being a good and empathic listener, continuously educating yourself on current ‘isms’ and phobias, always working towards social justice, and treating everyone with the dignity and respect they are entitled to as human beings.”

According to Graziadei, she walked away from the training program “with a new perspective, respect, and knowledge of the LGBTQA community.”

Phi Alpha also hosted this event last year, and Graziadei says that they will

According to Graziadei, coming an Ally was a necessity.

“I’m in my final year of pursuing a career in the field of social work. As a future social worker I continuously advocate for social justice,” said Graziadei. “It is my view that everyone deserves equal rights and opportunities.

The LGBTQ community to this day experiences a lot of oppression and discrimination. Becoming an ally has educated me on how I can advocate for this community and the issues that they constantly face.”

Although Phi Alpha will not be partnering up with the LGBTQA services to host another “two-in-one” Ally training until next spring, the LGBTQA Services will be hosting multiple LGBTQA 101 sessions and Ally Training throughout this semester.

Despite this, Weisenstein has kept tution relatively low.

“We’ve got some work to do, at the state system,” said Weisenstein.

The most significant issue to Weisenstein, in terms of looking to the future, is maintaining financial stability and keeping tuition as low as possible.

According to Weisenstein, he will miss the people of WCU the most.

“My wife and I have made a lot of friends here,” said Weisenstein. “It’s easier to leave a place than it is to leave your friends.”

WCU LOVE YOUR MELON CHAPTER PARTICPATES IN THON

he Love Your Melon brand has not only recently caught attention all over college campuses, but has also gained national recognition from outlets like “The Today Show” and “Good Morning America.”

The apparel brand started with just two college students from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota with a goal of putting a hat on every child battling with cancer in the country.

The organization is partnered with The Pinky Swear Foundation to provide immediate support for children

started right before the fall semester of 2015, and soon after began recruiting.

Although the Love Your Melon Crew at West Chester is not officially affiliated with the university, the group has obtained their max number of 20 students allowed in their crew that consists of an executive board and crew members.

ustralia’s opposition Labor Party has lauched a “Waste-pedia” booklet and a Waste Watch website on Thursday, March 17, accusing the Australian government of spending too much money, up to $400,000, on “koala and other marsupial-related events.” The opposition group claims that the government is too obsessed with hugging koalas. The govnement has spent hundreds of thousands to dollars to have koalas flown around the world.

n Modena, Italy, a vibrating sex toy triggered a bomb scare on Wednesday, March 16. A resident called to report suspcious vibrating coming from a roadside plastic recyling bin. The street was shut down and a 650-foot area was cordoned off as fire crews attended to find the buzzing sex toy.

Although the group is small, they do have a waitlist and volunteer list for people who are interested in getting involved.

The Love Your Melon Crew at West Chester has recently been in contact with several campus organizations that are interested in working with them, helping the group get involved with campus.

Love Your Melon Crew at West Chester holds meeting once to twice a month where the group discusses upcoming events, future goals dealing with sales and social media follows, organize household or hospital visits to children with cancer, childhood cancer centers or hospitals and discuss new ideas to help better their crew and awareness.

REMEMBERING JENNY MIEDWIG, FORMER COPY EDITOR FOR THE QUAD

O

n Monday, March 7, I woke up early, rolled over in bed, checked my phone and looked on Facebook.

A few “Rest in Peace” posts were on my newsfeed, and when I saw who was tagged, I thought at first that one

of Jenny’s friends had passed away, and she had made a post.

I promised myself I would text her that I was sorry for her loss. Then I realized she was tagged in all of the posts, and the horrible news started to sink in that Jenny had passed away.

Last semester, as editor-in-chief of The Quad, I had the honor of working very closely with Jenny Miedwig, one

When she told me she was finished, I skimmed her edits to make sure they were, in fact, accurate. They were fantastic. I remember texting a friend that I had the perfect new copy editor for the paper. I hired her on the spot. Jenny smiled, clearly happy to be offered the job. I never once regretted hiring Jenny, and I’ll forever be grateful we got to work together.

Jenny made a point of getting to know me, friending me on Snapchat and Facebook and always chatting with me at the paper. She worked at Kiwi in town, and whenever I saw her, we would chat. I am absolutely heartbroken to find out that she has passed away. In the coming days, I know this news will spread around campus.

It’s hard for people not to hear about such a tragic event. With Jenny being such a joy and always having a smile, I’ve already heard from people who are upset and heartbroken she’s gone. So many more people knew Jenny and were friends with her than I even realized.

e are nearing the middle of the semester, which can only mean one thing: stress.

The midterms are piling up and the memories of a relaxing spring break are starting to fade away. Just in time to pull everyone out of their midterm comas are two events that will surely bring a smile to anyone’s face.

The second annual International Day of Happiness will be taking place this week on two separate dates. On Monday, March 21 from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m., psychology faculty member Steven Uhlenbrock will host a seminar in Main Hall 168. The seminar will focus on happiness and give attendees tools and tips on how to make life happier and more meaningful.

The topic of positive psychology will also be discussed, with stories from students who have taken the Positive Psychology class and have continued

to use the tools in their everyday lives.

Later this week, on Friday, March 25, the academic quad will be the home to various tables and information sessions about happiness. There will be activities hosted by students of the Positive Psychology class, along with Psi Chi, the Psychology Club, Phi Epsilon Kappa, Sister 2 Sister, Active Minds, and the Association for Women’s Empowerment.

The goal is to give students, faculty and all members of the public knowledge on how to increase happiness both in the moment and for the long term. Both events are free and open to everyone, which are both great reasons to check them out.

This week’s events may not be able to do away with midterms and finals, but they will definitely give everyone a much-needed break from the stress that school brings.

In December, she graduated from the university. As a copy editor, Jenny had the slightly tedious job of reading every single article that went into the paper and copy editing and proofreading the articles. I respected the hell out of our copy editors because I thought the job was very difficult.

Not only was Jenny a reliable and dedicated employee, but she also showed up to the paper every time with a smile–and sometimes with a plate of brownies. Jenny was a complete joy to work with, always friendly, and outgoing.

When I hired Jenny for the paper, it was one of the first times I had ever conducted an interview.

I felt like a phony, like no one would take my authority seriously, but Jenny walked into the interview–in which she would have to copy edit an article– with a smile and an Associated Press Stylebook.

I told Jenny to take her time, and she spent over an hour editing the articles. I sat in the editor-in-chief office, checking emails and doing homework.

I was in awe of this girl who was so intently editing.

ALPHA DELTA PI TO HOST PHILANTHROPY EVENT FOR RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES

n Tuesday, March 22, Alpha Delta Pi sorority will be hosting their annual philanthropy event to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities and Alpha Delta Pi Foundation.

The event will be held in the Sykes ballrooms from 7 to 10 p.m. This year’s event is a trivia style competition called Trivia Roars, and it is sure to be a hit.

The cost for Trivia Roars is $32 for a team of eight people. For teams with less than eight people, the price is $5 per person.

Raffle tickets will also be available for purchase the night of the event with prizes that include Philadelphia Phillies and Flyers tickets.

Alpha Delta Pi and the Ronald McDonald House Charities have had a relationship with one another for over 30 years. Since the start of their relationship, the women of Alpha Delta Pi have raised more than $10 million for this organization.

Every year Alpha Delta Pi chapters across the country host exciting and successful fundraising events in support of the Ronald McDonald House, and West Chester’s chapter expects nothing less of Trivia Roars.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities is an amazing organization that provides a home away from home for the families of children who need specialized medical attention.

Ronald McDonald Houses are located within a few miles of hospitals so that children can receive immediate care at any time.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities allow for families who live hundreds of miles away from medical facilities to move closer to their children at little or no cost to the family. At each house, families receive private bedrooms, home-cooked meals and playrooms for their children.

At all Ronald McDonald House locations, volunteers come in almost every day to help out all of these families by cooking, cleaning, or even playing

games with the children.

In addition to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, proceeds from this event with also benefit the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation.

This foundation was created in 1983 to help support the women of this sorority.

The Alpha Delta Pi Foundation awards numerous scholarships to col-

legiate members every year and also helps members who are in financial distress.

By raising money for this foundation, it allows for the members of West Chester’s chapter to help out their sisters all across the country.

Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House is something that the women of Alpha Delta Pi always look forward to.

That is why it is the Theta Sigma chapter at WCU’s goal to make Trivia Roars as successful as possible.

Alpha Delta Pi hopes to see you at the event and join them in contributing to a great cause.

“DIVERSITY AT DUB C” TO JOIN WCU TELEVISION SHOW LINEUP

hat’s going on, Rams? My name is Marcelus CouncilJones, and I wanted to share a new, upcoming series that is hitting West Chester University’s campus.

There are many different television shows around to watch on campus such as the sports show called “Ram Center,” “WCU Weekly,” and of course The Quad’s mobile contributions.

There will be a new show hitting the campus soon called “Diversity at DUB C.” I could tell from the title that the show was for a good cause and would spread awareness all over campus about multicultural events that are not only happening on campus, but also off-campus and in the news as well.

I managed to interview producer Kaitlin Clark to share what the show would be.

“Diversity at DUB C is an upcoming TV show under WCU Studios,” she said. “It was created in order to highlight the diverse organizations, events, and individuals on campus.”

I knew I had to become a part of it because we need more diverse events in campus promoted the right way, and the campus needs to have an opportunity to hear about the great values and lessons they provide.

I feel like this is a great upcoming opportunity to be a part of, and since it is just beginning, anything is possible.

The people here that I work with are friendly, outgoing in the West Chester community, and business-minded and serious. They’re always getting the job done.

I also interviewed host Amanda Lee about what topics will be on the show.

“In addition to discussing and promoting events held by the diverse organizations on campus, the show also includes a number of segments focusing on different topics within the diverse community,” she said. “The show currently includes a real world news segment, discussing a recent topic or event that took place somewhere in the world, a Black Latino Greek Council moment focusing on the BLGC and what they have going on, and a Music

Minute focusing on aspects of diverse music industries or artists.”

The main question that I’m sure people would want to know is how to become a part of such an inspiring series.

Co-producer Cheyenne Dantzler gave some great advice on how to get involved.

“If anyone wants to be a part, they can contact diversitydubc@ gmail.com,” she said. “We are also looking for diverse/multicultural organizations to share their events that they want promoted, or to contact us if they would like a field report package put together of their event to be featured on the show.”

My reason for joining this amazing show is that I felt that the campus has so many great, insightful multicultural organizations.

With this being said, I don’t feel like they receive as much recognition as they should. So I figured I could help out, and this show would help bring these organizations to light and give the recognition their hard work deserves.

WCU OFFERS STUDENTS AMPLE OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOTER REGISTRATION

id you know millennials are the largest part of the United States population? Did you also know that even though we are the largest part of the population, we had the least amount of voters in the last presidential election turn up to the polls? Being away at school, many people say they are too busy to vote, or think since they are not at home, they can’t vote without going home. Some even think their vote does not matter. This is not true: You are not too busy, you can vote at school, and your vote does matter.

West Chester University has a goal to engage students on all things presidential election-themed by working with Campus Election Engagement

Project (CEEP), a national non-partisan organization working with colleges and universities across the country to engage as many students, faculty, and staff as possible. The Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs office, as well as Dr. Chris Stangl from the Department of Political Science, have been putting a lot of effort into this incredible project.

WCU has made voter registration a lot easier for its students by teaming up with TurboVote, an online voter site that makes registering fast and simple.

With this site, you are able to register online to vote, register under your WCU address if you want to vote in West Chester (dorms included), request an absentee ballot and learn your correct polling location.

Monday, March 28 is the last day to

register yourself if you want to vote in the primary election on Tuesday, April 26. To get as many students registered before the deadline, there have been tables set up around campus in the library, Sykes and outside of the dining hall. These efforts to engage and register students will not stop after the primary deadline because WCU is hoping to inform and involve their students on politics in a proactive way. Though after the primary deadline you will not be able to vote in the primary election, you can still vote in the general presidential election this upcoming November.

If you have missed the tables, or don’t have enough time to register during your day, be sure to do so on your own by going to https://wcu.turbovote. org/register. If you are unsure of which

candidate is right for you or what party you should affiliate yourself with, be sure to talk to the College Democrats or College Republicans to learn more.

They have meetings each week and Facebook pages found through their OrgSync pages.

By not practicing your right to vote, you are just hoping those who do vote will vote the way you would have. So why not just do it on your own? ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK HELPS COMBAT FOOD INSECUITY IN PHILADELPHIA

O

ver this most recent spring break, I traveled, made plenty of new friends and even got a decent suntan. There was a myriad of Snapchat moments and jokes told during delicious and somewhat foreign meals.

No, I did not spend my week soaking up the sun and swimming in blue oceans at some tropical beachside resort. I got my share of vitamin D during an alternative spring break to Philadelphia.

The goal was simple enough, in writing at least: A group of eight students and two adults venture to the City of Brotherly Love to help combat food insecurity. I found out about the trip last semester, although I can’t for the life of me remember exactly how it fell into my lap. I’ve settled on either finding it in an email or on a poster.

We had weekly meetings every Friday this semester leading up to spring

break, and when the day finally came to head out, I still had some hesitations.

Various questions ran through my mind as we all drove down, packed in a West Chester University van, with our faculty advisor Dr. Ashlie Delshad at the wheel.

What if we all can’t keep a conversation going? What if I feel awkward the whole time? How can we even begin to help a city as large as Philadelphia?

The questions that occupied my mind in the first hours of our trip quickly dissipated once we arrived at our destination.

The drive down was the muchneeded icebreaker that set the course for the way the rest of the week was going to go. We all got comfortable with each other so quickly, as if we had been friends for years.

During the week we were in Philadelphia, we stayed in a beautiful church located in Center City, which also doubled as a homeless shelter for locals.

To go along with our mission of sustainability, we took public transortation to our work sites as often as pos-

sible.

The first site we went to was Awbury Arboretum, located in Germantown.

Awbury is a large, open area filled with various greenhouses, walkways and even a secret garden. We spent two days at this site planting seeds and working with Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) employee Lisa Mosca. Mosca was truly a pleasure to work with throughout the week. She gave everyone ample information on how to continue volunteering with PHS, and she always had a smile and willingness to help.

Other sites we worked on included Stenton Family Manor, Heritage Farm, and other various urban garden sites in north Philadelphia.

Throughout the week, we cleaned the trash and excess foliage from various sites, prepped garden beds, and even dug massive concrete slabs out of some garden areas (possibly the oddest task we had all week).

Our tasks were not always easy, but they were made less difficult by the flow of conversation and collaborative energy.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation mentors children, honors son

O

n July 19, 2010, tragedy struck the Hicks family. While hiking on vacation in California, 17year old Andrew lost his footing and slipped down a mountain. Just a few weeks after his passing, Andrew’s family established the Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation to honor their son.

According to its website, “The Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation aims to honor Andrew’s life and demonstrate the love of Christ to the youth of Chester, PA by identifying and fulfilling service opportunities with the involvement of Henderson High School students and the West Chester, PA community.”

The foundation has three types of programming, including “open” events for any Chester child, Warrior Guides, and its RISE program.

The open events are open to Henderson High School students to volunteer at and also for any child of Chester to participate in. These events are run by seniors at Henderson.

“We partner with them to provide advice, supervision, and resources, but the seniors who run the event have a lot of responsibility too,” said Karen Hicks, executive director of the foundation.

Around 100 volunteers from Henderson help at these events, and these events occur every other month. There are many WCU volunteers at them as well.

The Warrior Guides program has around 100 Henderson students who spend one Saturday every month with a specific Chester child.

The Andrew L. Hicks, Jr. Foundation organizes events for the Warrior Guides. WCU students often volunteer as chaperones at these events.

For one week in the summer, on the North East River in Maryland, the foundation also runs a camp.

Around 36 Henderson High School students volunteer as counselors, and WCU students often volunteer as well.

Camp Paradise is from Sunday, August 7 to Thursday, August 11 this year.

Interested volunteers can also become Small Group Leaders for the teen leadership development program, RISE. Thirty-five Chester teens meet every other Thursday with a RISE Coordinator. Students must commit to at least one semester in the volunteer position.

“We need college students who are

excited and passionate about seeing the inner city youth grow and develop, and take on leadership within their own community,” said Hicks.

In one year, the foundation typically gets between 750 and 1,000 volunteers.

The football team, tennis team, and lacrosse team at WCU have all volunteered. Physical education majors of-

ten organize events.

Students manage time, stress while balancing school, work

T

he academic workload of students in college can be very stressful at times, and throwing a job into the mix can be even more overwhelming.

Balancing academics, a social life, extracurricular activities, and a job, among other things, can be much more difficult than it seems.

But don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many students have been in your shoes before and have successfully managed to come up with the perfect balance for juggling everything on their plate.

Students have a variety of different reasons for working, such as needing money to pay for their tuition, bills, rent, or even just to have extra spending money on the side.

Whatever the reason may be, there are many things that can be done to help a student balance a job and their academics.

First, find a job that is reasonably flexible with the number of hours that you plan to work each week.

Taking a job that requires you to work more hours than you can handle may cause you to fall behind on your schoolwork.

An understanding employer will want you to thrive in your academics.

West Chester University student Carly Smith gives her advice to students trying to balance their job and academics: “Only schedule shifts for work on particular days that don’t interfere with your class schedule,” she said. “If it gets to be too much, put the job on hold until you can control your academics. Money can wait.”

Making your priorities known to yourself and to your employer is extremely important in balancing college and a job. Many students believe in the saying “school comes first.”

If a student obtains a job on campus, the school is considered their employer. Therefore, most supervisors prioritize academics. Although off-campus employers are also likely to understand that student employees must work around their academic schedules, students should make their academic priorities clear during the interview process.

Time management is key. Writing out a weekly or monthly calendar that includes your classes, extracurricular activities, study time, downtime, and employment hours will help you stay organized and allow you to manage your time efficiently.

“I keep myself organized with a calendar that I have with me at all times and I find myself to be much more effective in everything I’m involved with because this allows me to manage my time properly,” said WCU student Melissa Milton.

Creating a schedule will allow you to realize how much time you have to complete certain tasks, and may even help you find extra time you didn’t know you had.

Lastly, seek help if you need it. If you find your grades suffering, have difficulty meeting deadlines, or feel as though there is no time to socialize or enjoy your extracurricular activities, ask your manager to cut down your hours.

“When I was working 30 hours a week last semester I didn’t have much time to focus on my studies, and I found myself rushing to complete all of my assignments. In the beginning of this semester, I asked my boss to cut back my hours, allowing me to focus more on my academics,” said WCU student John Marshall.

There are also many services located throughout West Chester’s campus that allows students to talk to a mentor about the stress of managing the work-life-school balance.

If you feel as though you are undergoing a lot of stress and anxiety, take a deep breath.

Balancing college and a job is not easy, but it is doable if it is done the right way.

CAREER FAIRS PREPARE STUDENTS FOR REAL-WORLD JOB EXPERIENCES

s a college student with the goal of obtaining an internship or entry-level position prior to graduation, you can never start thinking ahead too early.

Besides the traditional LinkedIn account and researching on your own, a great place to start to work on your professional career is at a career fair.

If you’ve ever attended a career fair, I’m sure you can agree that they are nothing less than intimidating and in a way, awkward.

But, despite the difficulty to adjust to the setting and overwhelming feelings, they can truly be helpful in beginning to build a network and ultimately find your first position.

If you come to these gatherings of many employers prepared and ready for any kind of question that might be thrown your way, you will do just fine.

The first way to prepare for a career fair is to construct a resumé. No matter how many times and how many different people view your resumé, there will always be a change suggestion made.

Resumés tend to be “preference-based” meaning that depending on the eyes that view it, there will be different things they like or dislike about the format and wording.

Using a pre-made template such as one on Microsoft Word could work to start off with, but creating one from scratch with help from informative books or a career advisor will lead you to a more custom look.

The main thing to focus on while constructing your resumé is to make sure you market yourself to tailor the career that you want. Depending on the size of the fair, you should prepare to print about 10 to 20 resumés and bring them with you to hand out to employers accepting them at the fair.

The second but definitely most timeconsuming and tough step is to know the companies. Before you step foot in the fair, make sure you know exactly who will be there, what they are looking for and who you want to speak to.

Most career fair venues will publish the list of attending employer’s once they announce that they’ll be holding the fair.

So, figure at least a month in advance you’ll be well aware of the companies that will be in attendance. Spend some time making a list of potential companies that you want to speak to.

Next, research these companies by simply visiting their web site and reading more about what they do, and the position they are offering. Mastering this step and becoming well informed about the employers you are speaking with will minimize any uncomfortable conversations as well as make you stand out as a candidate by expressing to the employer that you know a lot about them and are truly interested.

The third and most difficult step is to come up with a mini speech to introduce yourself. Some refer to this dialogue as an "elevator speech" because it should be short and sweet and to the point, as if to say it in the time span you spend with someone in an elevator.

The things to include in this little intro-icebreaker are: your name, your major and graduation date, and what you are looking for, and are interested in specified to the company you're speaking to at the time.

The fourth step that is obvious yet sometimes put on the back burner, looking the part. A few days before the career fair lay out an outfit that you will be wearing.

Dress professional but stand out. Ideally, you want to dress as if you were going to your dream job interview.

Though most business clothes tend to stay on the neutral color side, like black, white, and gray, try to find something brighter to add to the outfit, whether it be a patterned tie or a colored necklace.

Once the career fair ends, your job does not.

Always follow up with an e-mail or phone call to employers you connected with. Most importantly, be confident and professional.

Maintain a respectful mannerism and tone while sounding upbeat and energetic at the same time.

Career fairs can land you the job of your dreams or act as practice talking to professionals. No matter what you get out of career fairs, they are always worth your while to go. Good luck.

Writing this article, I spent hours rereading it and proofreading it. I wondered if I had missed a comma or spelled something wrong. I wondered what corrections Jenny would have made to it.

I’m going to spend today thinking about Jenny and remembering her. I know no one who knew her will ever forget her. I’m so sorry for the loss of those who were close to her. Rest in peace, Jenny.

backs, sweat lining our foreheads, and dirt jammed up our fingernails. After a while to no avail, some of our spirits were diminshed. But then, we finally got one slab out of the ground and we all rejoiced, garden-gloved hands raised in the air and giving each other high fives.

On the way back from that last day of labor, one of my peers said how much of a team-building activity that day was. It might not have seemed like a lot of work or like it was that important on paper. Yet we left the site knowing that by clearing that space, we had really helped Stenton out.

It all came together in a beautiful, full-circle kind of way. We were literally starting with the roots of where food comes from by planting and sowing seeds. Then with our cleaning of the gardens we were able to see how food insecurity affects and at the same time

brings together the communities they surround. Finally, by serving a meal to those who were directly influenced by food insecurity, we were able to put the pieces together on this large and often times baffling puzzle.

I had an amazing week full of eyeopening experiences. I met and became friends with nine new people and learned firsthand how important helping those in need is.

I also feel like I saw part of the “big picture” of the food issues that plague large cities like Philadelphia. I know that a week of volunteering is by no means an end-all-be-all to the problems that the communities face, but it was definitely a start.

The car ride back to West Chester was vastly different than the one leaving it. Everyone reminisced about the work we had done, the puns we had made and the progress we had started.

There was also a sense of reflection that permeated the van as we drove home.

We all imagined what our progress

would look like weeks, months, even years from now. The questions that ran through my mind were, needless to say, not similar to the ones I pondered in the beginning of the week.

Who would be eating the food that we helped grow? What families would work together on garden plots we helped clean? How many lives would benefit from our time during this one week?

I definitely can’t wait for next year to do another similar spring break.

appropriation is when white people attempt to wear locs and other hairstyles traditionally worn by people of color.

I believe one of my friends, who is a person of color, summed it up the best when they said the biggest problem is the double standard. They explained that their hair gets called raggedy and they will be side-eyed for their hair, while white people are seen as “earthy” and “enlightened” when they do it. Additionally, as one of my white friends pointed out, when we are told that our actions are oppressive by an oppressed group, it is our responsibility to listen and try to understand why. When you hurt someone, you do not get to decide you didn’t.

Everyone has different opinions, but if you are also a white person, then please recognize that you are coming from a place of privilege. All I ask is that you keep an open mind.

To learn more about these issues, I would highly encourage everyone to take a Women’s and Gender Studies course.

Founded in 1932 as Quad Angles, The Quad was re-named as such in 1975. The Quad is the independent, student-run newspaper of West Chester University of Pennsylvania. WEST CHESTER POLICE CHIEF DISCUSESS BOROUGH CRIME West Chester University student population more focused on books than parties

T

he West Chester Chief of Police, Scott Bohn, said at a press conference at West Chester University that there has been a “13 percent reduction in serious crime” in the year of 2015.

Bohn included that there were about 1,990 crimes reported in 2015. He believed 2015 was a sign of improvement.

“Arguably our numbers are very good,” said Bohn.

He also commends the current student body at West Chester University, and believes student behavior of West Chester has been improving over the years.

West Chester University has had a reputation for being a “party school,” and has even been featured on websites ranking the top 100 “party schools” in America. Bohn has always been aware of the party scene and how the town residents and students have problems with one another during the weekends.

Bohn reflected on a large party that happened at a house close to campus a few years ago. This event attracted hundreds of students, which caused the police to intervene and stop the party before it reached its peak. Intoxicated students paraded through the streets, and reckless behavior occurred as a few students flipped a parked car, which appeared in national news after this rowdy weekend.

This event caused concern amongst the borough and the university to cooperate with local police more.

Within a brief time after this event, the borough of West Chester voted to pass a proposal to post more than 200 “quiet hour zone” signs around the borough and throughout streets near

the university. These violations can cause one to pay more than $300.

According to the Daily Local, the general provision of the borough states that “it is unlawful for anyone to cause a noise disturbance while specific limitations are put on electronic devices, tools and musical instruments, among others.”

Bohn made it clear that there has always been some type of noise ordinance before the signs were placed throughout the neighborhoods. He believes they are more of a reminder to students to respect their neighbors when it comes to the noise throughout the streets.

The university’s reputation is progressively changing from the “party school” to now one of the most difficult universities in Pennsylvania to be accepted into today based on academic requirements.

The demand for this university has significantly increased over the years with the student body ranging about 16,000 students or more.

“There may be more serious students attending this university, or they are more careful with their behavior now,” said Bohn.

Bohn also informed the audience that there has been a significant reduction in 2015 with the percentage

Today, a majority of parties at the university tend to be smaller, which was pointed out by Bohn.

This is one of the factors for why he believes student behavior has improved instead of “5,000 students walking the streets with their red cups.”

of underage drinking violations. There has been a “36 percent reduction” of underage violations. This may factor into the conclusion that the university has their own separate reporting, according to Bohn.

The university’s security force, Public Safety, may experience more with underage drinking violations than Bohn and his department.

Bohn said that “serious crime, homicide, rape, theft, and arson” are the crimes they usually report.

He did inform the audience that there is a database where they report everything including underage violations, where potential employers tend to check records for applicants.

There were about 24,000 calls during 2015, not including traffic stops, and 325 criminal arrests.

He pointed out that “serious crime” has dropped about 50 percent, and he attributed this fall to the university being one of the factors.

Serious crimes reported from the university are less than five percent of total crime in the borough considering the large population of the student body.

The problems the borough has with the university and how the police department do not agree on everything was significantly addressed.

Locals tend to blame crime and any other problems in this borough on the university’s students. Bohn’s statistics and comments prove that the West Chester student body is not to blame.

“The town is a hot spot and it attracts college students and younger crowds from all over the region,” said Bohn.

Even though the statistics prove that most “serious crimes” are committed by people younger than 25 years old, the university and any of its students are rarely involved.

Bohn said the number of licensed alcohol distributors throughout the borough is extremely high, with more than 40 places.

It has become more affordable for business owners to purchase these licenses, and therefore the town of West Chester has a high rate of bars per capita. Bohn said that Penn State University is the only “college town” that has a higher rate of bars per capita in the state.

The university has attracted more well-rounded, behaved, and focused students in recent years. Bohn hopes to see the number of alcohol related crimes with the university’s students to continue to decrease year after year.

CULTIVATE YOUR MIND PLANS TO CREATE BETTER FUTURE FOR OUR PLANET

A

s a world, we are at an extremely pivotal place for growth and reformation. So many of us have woken up and feel such an urgency to help in any way we can.

But, global change must begin with individual transformation. This planet cannot heal until we each have. Many of us have felt a shift in the last year, especially; of awareness, of consciousness or empathy. Once you wake up, it’s nearly impossible to go back to sleep.

Whether you’re a student, recent graduate, young professional, business owner, industry expert, or unemployed, you have a purpose to fulfill here. You have a very important role in this world’s transformation. It’s going to take an equal balance of motivation that stems from both intellect and the heart.

“We have to find the fine line between having a concern for the world versus stressing about it.”

Not everyone needs to be a big game changer or a revolutionary. At the very least, we just need everyone to be as healthy and happy as they can possibly be — more laughter, smiles, and positive discussion within your circles. Do more of the activities that stimulate your mind and retain your spirit.

While many of the changes globally have a sense of urgency to them, we can’t get overwhelmed. Just like individual growth, putting pressure on the situation will just create more tension

and anxiety, which both hinder the process.

We have to find the fine line between having a concern for the world versus stressing about it. As long as we listen and play our part, it will happen.

Forces that nobody can quite fathom are helping us. Just like our bodies, this planet was created in a way that can heal and sustain itself. But, also like the human body, our planet can’t do so if we’re not fueling and supporting it properly.

While it’s tempting to go off the grid, hermit up, and hide from it all, we need you.

We all have a voice, a story, a perspective that no one else but you has.

We need to speak up and blow those whistles. Anyone who is equipped, educated and hopeful should find a way to support themselves and use their powers for good.

I’m not here to tell you what’s good and what’s bad. That is your journey, your truth to discover and decide. But, we need all the light spreaders to come out of hiding and join the movement.

Join us as we cultivate the future of this planet.

How do we possibly do this? We start with ourselves and our community.

We definitely don’t try and tackle the whole world or every issue at once.

We support each other as we heal; we must all take care of ourselves first and foremost. Not a single one of us will be able to contribute collectively if we’re not working towards discovering our authentic selves.

We don’t have to be fully there; we just have to be aware and start taking steps forward. We need to transform our businesses and schools, gradually and strategically.

Once the systems are restructured in a sustainable and functional way, we won’t have to do as much. We can spend more time focusing on our-

selves and live simpler lives.

When this happens, there won’t be as many people who will have to go through great lengths to heal, because we are taking care of the problems as they arise rather than covering them up.

But right now, we are not there yet.

There are so many people hurting, and we need to understand and empathize with them.

We need to grasp the notion that people are the way they are in many ways because of what they’ve been exposed to.

“We support each other as we heal; we must all take care of ourselves first and foremost.”

So, let’s come together. Let’s join forces. Let’s take care of ourselves and our community.

On Friday, April 15, at Sprout Music Collective, I have put together an event to raise awareness, demonstrate, and celebrate the beautiful and magical connection of the mind, body, and soul.

Earth dwellers of all ages, sizes, races, colors, religions, classes, or whatever other classifications we’ve been labeled as, are invited with open arms to this event.

From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. we’ll have massages, chiropractic adjustments, reiki, slacklines, gardening tutorials, a photobooth, empowerment sessions, a tie-dye station, cooking class, drum circles, essential oil demonstrations and outdoor games.

There will be an open mic for music, poetry, spoken word, and guest lecturers. Local vendors, face painters and henna tattoo artists will be pres-

The second part of the event is for those 21 and older. Humandala will provide a solid foundation for individuals to dance and express themselves freely. Supporting artists include Mr. Sampson, Obsolete, Terrell Williams, and Brandon Mesen. We will have some outdoor games going on, body painting, a zen den, and much more!

Cultivate Your Mind is currently a collection of like-minded West Chester friends who have joined forces, people that are using their powers for good. Our collaborative events cater to the notion that we as individuals each have a different way of achieving balance, discovering bliss, and finding our purpose. While it’s a solo journey, we aim to simplify and support your voyage.

Each festivity we plan encompasses a variety of interests that will hopefully accommodate all attendants.

We are optimistic that our events will inspire others to open up their spaces for similar occasions. In order to honor Mother Earth, we use sustainable and mindful marketing tactics.

YOUNG VOTERS LIKE BERNIE SANDERS MORE THAN HILLARY CLINTON

n Thursday, March 17, The Washington Post cited an analysis conducted by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), which detailed that, compared to both parties’ frontrunners, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, “Bernie Sanders has more votes than both of themcombined.”

According to the data CIRCLE provides, Sanders has accumulated 1.5 million votes, whereas Trump and Clinton each reside in the 600,000 range.

Furthermore, Sanders has broken records for the sheer number of individual contributions he’s received. According to The Huffington Post, Sanders beat President Barack Obama’s record of 2.2 million contributors with 2.3 million as of December 21, 2015.

These individual donations to Sanders’ campaign are, on average, less than $25.

This means that, while Clinton may have more money with her donations from average citizens and her Super PAC combined, Sanders simply has more enthusiasm on his trail that is primarily fueled by the Democratic youth.

Some of you may ask why our generation likes Sanders so much. This article hopes to answer that question.

To begin with, Clinton has consistently come across as disingenuous and lacking in instinct, and her track record does not exactly leave this belief unfounded.

In the midst of post-9/11 paranoia, Clinton voted for the war against Iraq in 2002. This same year, not only was Sanders against the war in Iraq, but he also backed up his decision on television with several points that would prove to be extremely relevant.

A couple of these points were both the notation that war is an extremely expensive decision to pile onto the already existing large national debt (it

was 6 trillion dollars at the time) and his fear about “who will govern Iraq once Saddam Hussein is removed (and if) Islamic fundamentalists will be overthrown and replaced by extremists.”

The former rings true due to the fact that, not including payments to veterans, the cost of the Iraq war was about $800 billion, and as The Huffington Post states, when combined with “the costs of the Afghanistan war and the Bush-era tax cuts… you’ll account for almost half of the debt that the nation is set to owe by 2019.” The latter is relevant for obvious reasons.

Granted, Clinton has since admitted to the Iraq War being a mistake, but that argument falls flat to the thousands of soldiers who lost their lives in the search of weapons of mass destruction programs that did not exist.

When concerning gay rights and issues, something heavily focused upon by millennials, the candidates have very different stances historically.

The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was an act that sought to have marriage under federal law be defined as a union between a man and a women and permitted states to refuse to give recognition to any same-sex marriages. Sanders was one of the few at the time that publically opposed this bill.

Additionally, Sanders has both supported the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which prohibits any form of discrimination against the LGBTQIA community and can be seen in a widely viewed video of him arguing in favor of gay men and women in the military against Representative Duke Cunningham in 1995.

Conversely, DOMA was signed by President Bill Clinton and was defended by his wife up until 2013 when she decided that she was an advocate for gay marriage and gay rights.

In regard to the Black Lives Matter movement and African American rights, this past year alone shows incredible differences between the two candidates.

While it is important to consider

Sanders’ history of marching with Martin Luther King, Jr. and his getting arrested in protesting for civil rights along with Clinton’s past labeling of Black men as “super predators” and her open support for anti-Civil Rights Act congressmen Barry Goldwater, it is this past year of both Democrats’ handlings of the racial climate that I implore you to keep in mind.

I have previously written for this paper that during the first Democratic debate when asked if “black lives matter “or if “all lives matter,” Clinton did not even use these phrases in her answer. This in it of itself shows a lack of integrity on Clinton’s part as it both demonstrates a refusal to commit to a social justice issue in fear of backlash and a lack of education about the systematic racism existing today. After this, she was met with complaints and altered her campaign to one that was suddenly putting African American rights at the forefront of her conversation.

Additionally, when Sanders was met with Black Lives Matter protestors, he gave up his time to give the microphone over to them to speak, not silencing their narrative. Clinton took the opposite approach and had Black Lives Matter activists escorted out by police, which is ironic considering one of the most prominent issues discussed within the movement is racism exhibited by police. For there to be such a disconnect is astonishing from a candidate who was supposed to be doing all she could to spread awareness about stories from minorities being overlooked.

Why does this information statistically impact younger people at a much higher rate?

In my opinion, much of it has to do with older people watching more television. It is no secret that as people grow older, their television-viewing habits increase.

However, one of Clinton’s highest contributing financial providers is Time Warner, which is a media company that owns several news networks,

including CNN. This has led to a very pro-Clinton climate on TV, which in turn makes stations either demean Sanders or not even acknowledge him at all. Because younger people are watching television less, they get their news via social media, which promotes discussions from a wider variety of perspectives.

While some may argue that political discussion is too nuanced to be done virtually, I would have to disagree.

There will always be some avenues on the Internet that are flooded with bias and inaccuracy, but it is the ability for us to be journalists through recording political rallies and making statuses that allows us to have a broadened understanding of politics that more readily presents hypocrisy to its receivers.

Another large aspect of Clinton’s campaign is the excitement about the possibility of our first woman president. While I agree that there needs to be more diversity amongst sexes, races, and other social groups, I don’t want to go into Election Day voting for the woman. I want to go into Election Day voting for the best potential candidate. This election season, I think that the best candidate is a man. In the meantime, the majority of congressmen are up for re-election this year, so now is the time to elect those who will better the nation and reflect the diversity of this country.

It is with all of this in consideration that I declare my vote to Sanders. To my fellow Democrats that are supporters of Sanders, Clinton, or still undecided, I urge you all to listen to multiple perspectives, have conversations, and be sure of who you want as president so you can get out and vote!

After all, if enough of us don’t come out to vote, we may very well have a wall-builder or a Zodiac Killer being sworn in 2017.

HOW “THE 100” FAILED LGBT+ FANS

Viewers furious, betrayed by lesbian character’s lazily written death EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

The premiere of its seventh episode in the third season, however, changed—and ruined—everything.

O

n Thursday, March 3, I sat curled up in the corner of my friends’ couch with my laptop balanced on my lap and earbuds firmly in place as I impatiently waited for 9 p.m. to approach. While there was no way for me to watch on my friends’ TV, I was determined to watch the latest episode of my favorite show and hunted down a suitable livestream link.

Despite the subpar quality, I was still excited the moment “The 100” began playing on my screen.

My friends had earlier teased me about my love for a show that aired on The CW, a network prominently known for its cheesy dramas, but I easily ignored them. I had gotten used to my favorite shows letting me down: There was Beth Greene’s horribly written death in “The Walking Dead,” and before her, Allison Argent’s untimely death in “Teen Wolf.” And while “The Legend of Korra” did not end in tragedy, I found myself profoundly disappointed with its rushed conclusion.

But when I discovered “The 100,” my hope was restored. I thought I had finally found a series with trustworthy, competent writers and producers with original ideas. I truly believed it was special. And for awhile, it was.

Set 97 years after a nuclear war that caused the remaining human survivors to live in space, “The 100” follows Clarke Griffin (Eliza Taylor), the first bisexual lead on a CW show, as she and other teenage criminals are sent back to Earth to see if it is inhabitable. Not only does it turn out to be inhabitable, but there have also been people on Earth, known as Grounders, who were not wiped out by the war. After enduring conflict with the Grounders

Lexa was perhaps one of the most unique characters I have ever encountered in fiction, an enigma of a woman. She possessed an intimidating aura that wordlessly demanded the respect of everyone around her. Originally portrayed as a wise, strong, levelheaded warrior who considers love a weakness, it was not until later in the second season that we saw hints of Lexa’s vulnerable, more open side. And what—or, rather, who—caused Lexa to soften was Clarke. They had an intense, mesmerizing dynamic, and the tale of them falling in love felt entirely natural. The beginning of the third season was amazing to watch as Clarke, who had been betrayed by Lexa at the end of the second season, reunited with

In this episode, entitled “Thirteen,” Clarke had to leave Polis, the capitol of the Grounders’ Coalition, to return to her people. At this point, Clarke had clearly forgiven Lexa and trusted her completely, which helped her to accept her feelings. When she went to say goodbye, Lexa was visibly struggling to remain stoic and almost said “I love you.” This led to Clarke kissing Lexa, who openly cried for the first time on the show, and they had sex. After so many episodes of anger and hurt and guarded walls, Lexa and Clarke were finally happy and at peace.

It was literally less than five minutes after their love scene when Lexa came rushing to Clarke’s room. She just so happened to arrive in the doorway while Titus, her longtime mentor who disapproved of Clarke and ingrained

the “love is weakness” idea into Lexa, was aimlessly firing a gun. Naturally, the bullet hit Lexa in the stomach and killed her.

The way that Lexa died could not have been any more insulting. One white, straight, male character survived after taking a spear to the chest; another white, straight, male character survived after being stabbed by a poisoned knife; and yet another white, straight, male character survived being hanged. Taking all of this into consideration, how are we supposed to believe that the mighty, revolutionary leader of all 12 Grounder clans met her demise by a stray bullet?

As one fan pointed out online, Lexa was a young lesbian gradually learning to accept love back into her life, and “The 100” somehow deemed it appropriate to abruptly end her story with her being murdered by her father figure because of who she loved.

Jason Rothenberg, show creator and executive producer, always praised his own series on containing surprising twists and groundbreaking representation. But how can he consider this a surprising twist when he, like so many others before him, played into the exhausting Bury Your Gays trope? After all, surely he didn’t expect us to forget about Tara Maclay from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” also incidentally killed off with a stray bullet.

And as for groundbreaking, I would say the only thing he was groundbreaking in is queerbaiting. This is indeed perhaps the worst form of queerbaiting I have ever witnessed, with Rothenberg capitalizing on the excitement of his LGBT+ fans and heavily promoting the Clarke and Lexa relationship as being “endgame,” when in all likelihood he will push Clarke into the arms of a man by the end of the

ZOE SALDANA CAST AS NINA SIMONE: Not Black Enough for the Role?

arlier this month the producers of the upcoming Nina Simone biopic starring Zoe Saldana released the film trailer, and a lot of criticism has resurfaced since its viewing.

“Nina” will star Saldana from “Avatar” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” as the late singer and civil rights activist and David Oyelowo from “Selma” and “The Butler” as Simone’s nurse and manager. The film will be a depiction of Simone’s rise to fame with a particular focus on the last eight years of her life.

The film has been shrouded in controversy since the announcement of the Saldana casting back in 2012. But in recent weeks, since the trailer’s release, the outcry of disapproval has been especially high.

Saldana and the producers of the film have been receiving large amounts of backlash for their choice in casting Saldana as Simone. The issue Simone fans have with the Saldana casting is that she is not black enough, and too light-skinned to portray the role.

Saldana, an Afro-Latina actress of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent has expressed her excitement for the role and fondness of Simone. She said in an April 2013 issue of Latina, “I was already a part of this project and my priority was Nina, and the love that I feel for this woman, for her music and what she left us. Let’s all give ourselves a chance to watch it and then make a decision.”

Even with the amount of objection she has faced, Saldana continues to promote the film and ensure fans she put her all into portraying Simone.

Simone’s estate made it clear that their stance on the upcoming film in a number of Twitter posts. One post slamming Saldana read, “@zoesaldana Cool story but please take Nina’s name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.”

The trailer shows the complete transformation, which has been compared to blackface, that was done to make Saldana bear a resemblance to the jazz singer. Saldana wears skin-darkening makeup to make her appear darker,

Following the trailer’s release, Simone’s estate also posted to Twitter, “Hopefully people begin to understand this is painful, Gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, nauseating, soul-crushing. It shall pass, but for now…”

In a 2015 InStyle interview, the actress revealed that she originally did not think she was right for the role. But who is to say Saldana, who has been nominated for several NAACP Image Awards, is not right for the role? Saldana has gone from small independent film actress to being regarded as one of Hollywood’s elites. She continues to surprise filmgoers by being a versatile actress.

Saldana has been receiving support from fellow black actresses, including Queen Latifah, Paula Patton, and surprisingly, Simone’s daughter, who has been very vocal throughout the whole ordeal. Latifah said, “I think Zoe Saldana is a great actress, so I am looking forward to it. She is of African descentI don’t see why she shouldn’t play the

role. I just want to see it. Get rid of the hype and let’s go watch a movie.”

In an interview with TIME, Simone’s daughter explained that she was not supportive of the film, but does not blame Saldana.

She said, “It’s unfortunate that Zoe Saldana is being attacked so viciously when she is someone who is part of a larger picture. It’s clear she brought her best to this project, but unfortunately, she’s being attacked when she’s not responsible for any of the writing or the lies.”

Another controversy surrounding the film is the producers continuing without the permission of Simone’s estate. Cynthia Mort, the director of the biopic, filed suit against the production team, claiming she was cut out of all of the decision making. Although her name is still on the film, she is unhappy to be associated with it because she had no say.

A much bigger issue fans of Simone should be worrying themselves with is whether or not Simone’s story will be told properly. It is groundbreaking to have a film centered around a black female civil rights activist. Simone’s story is undoubtedly one that needs to be told, not just for black women, but all races and genders.

The film is set to be released on Friday, April 22.

“SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI IV: FINAL” AWAITS U.S. RELEASE

ame developer Atlus, the company responsible for the popular series “Persona,” has recently announced a new installment in its challenging JRPG series, “Shin Megami Tensei.” First releasing on the Japanese Super Famicom in 1992, the fifth game in the series, “Shin Megami Tensei IV,” was released in 2013 on the Nintendo 3DS, both in Japan and the United States.

The newest installment in the “SMT” series appears to be a direct sequel to “SMT IV,” with the title “SMT IV: Final.”

“Final” will be released on the 3DS, with an initial Japanese release date of early February 2016. Unfortunately, no date for the American or European release has been announced as of now.

he Union Transfer, a venue created in 2011, has had its fair share of cult followings, and the scene remained the same on March 16 as 19 year-old Swedish rapper Yung Lean took the stage.

Growing up in Stokholm, Jonatan Hastad started his career with The Hasch Boys, naming himself Yung Lean and joining with friends Yung Sherman and Yung Gud among others. As they grew in popularity, the trio broke off from the rest of the Hasch Boys and began producing music on Soundcloud as The Sad Boys.

Lean soon became the most prominent of The Sad Boys, and after two album releases, a culture began to form around his music, and The Sad Boys were no longer just a name referring to

ties. The player must fight and recruit these creatures, who will then fight on the side of the player. In some games, the player can learn new skills from their inhuman allies.

Recruiting can be difficult, however, as enemies require that the player character to first be a high enough level to equal that of the enemy. Once that requirement is met, the enemy will request money and items, and sometimes asks the player a moral question, which has a varying answer depending on the specific enemy that is being fought. If the enemy is satisfied, they will join your party if there is enough room.

The plots of “SMT” games vary widely, but all of them come back to morality and the balance between law and chaos. This is reflected in the multiple endings found in each game, which are unlocked through the player’s choices and alliances. The different choices create a moral alignment that

moves the player across a spectrum of law and chaos, with neutrality in the center, which can be reached by balancing aligned decisions. This results in at least four different accessible endings for each game.

Arming themselves with Arizona Ice Tea, bucket hats and Supremeline clothing, Sad Boys fans flocked to the Union Transfer and made themselves at home, as could be seen with the rows of gallon tea jugs lining the entrance of the venue. It seemed that every other person at the show was wearing a bucket hat, the most popular

cats on them and “edgy” photos clearly worn to grab attention. The Internet had come to life and was at this show.

While the goofy nature of his fans may portray Yung Lean as a joke, his songs are actually very finely tuned, and a great deal of creativity can be seen in his work. Many of his songs rely on stellar production provided by Sherman and Gud, with Lean himself providing enough vocal prowess to

“SMT IV: Final” looks to be an impressive sequel and includes plenty of new and exciting story and gameplay options. Very little information is known about both the newly introduced characters and the characters who appear from “SMT IV,” such as the player character from “IV.” With luck, more information will surface in the near future, including the release dates for countries outside of Japan.

The important part of enjoying Yung Lean is to recognize that the rapping, while okay, is not the focal point of the music. One must be able to enjoy the average in order to appreciate the great that is in his music.

When it was time to take the stage, the crew began to fill it with gravestones that looked like they were found in a Halloween store. Oddly enough, after they set up the tombstones, they immediately smoked out the stage and they could no longer be seen. Such is what is to be expected from a Yung Lean show: lazy decor being drowned out by something that honestly made the show as good as it was almost describes Lean himself.

Ultimately; the Union Transfer will wind up holding better shows. While good, there wasn’t anything really extraordinary about the performance.

That being said, there will be a lot more shows that will wind up being worse than Lean, as there were no real concerning flaws about what the goofy Swedish rapper had to bring to the table.

Radiohead underbooks tour despite fan outcry

he career trajectory of Radiohead moved them from one-hit wonder to rock legends within the span of a decade. From the popularity of their 1992 grunge hit “Creep,” followed by the prog-tinged album “OK Computer,” and the IDM experiments of “Kid A,” the band’s status is practically immortal. For a band that is requested nearly every year to be inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, it raises the question as to why a guaranteed stadium sellout would only book three concerts in England, their home country, for a 2016 tour.

“I’m as f****d off as you are, and I’m only human,” singer and multi-instrumentalist Thom Yorke tweeted in response to fan backlash over the instantaneous disappearance of tickets.

Billboard notes that when they went on sale on Friday, March 18, tickets for every show Radiohead is set to headline this year had sold out within minutes.

Instead of just adding on more tour dates as requested, the band issued another statement on Twitter urging fans, “if you’re thinking of buying a ticket from a secondary sites PLEASE PLEASE [sic] carefully check the original rules of the venue concerned.”

With only 21 upcoming shows slotted for the 2016 tour, Radiohead will only be visiting 11 countries, eight in Europe, three in North America, one in Asia and none anywhere else. This is sincerely perplexing given the status of Radiohead as a music industry juggernaut.

Excitement and fan speculation over what has been tentatively titled “LP9” has lingered among fan sites since 2012. The hype for this album stems from the mixed reception toward “The King of Limbs” juxtaposed by what was generally considered one of the band’s best tours that following year.

For those unable to catch Radiohead live, they have made extensive efforts to document their performances. Two volumes of “Live from the Basement” as well as the “Scotch Mist” compilation exist to provide fans with videos of

the band taking the stage. The extended set lists featuring cuts that don’t appear on the band’s studio albums make these videos a special treat for any fan.

Additionally, Radiohead’s live equipment rig that includes everything from a quaint toy piano to the primitive hardware of the ondes Martenot synthesizer is a spectacle in itself.

Currently, to watch the band perform, tickets are on sale on secondary sites like StubHub, and start around the $2000 mark in England and only get worse from there. This is seen as a slight from fans native to the country as they feel they are being ignored in spite of their outreach for the more appealing market of the United States.

However, Radiohead isn’t the only headliner under fire for concert etiquette and ticket sales this year. With prices touching $10,000 at some stops, pop queen Beyoncé’s actions have been subject to widespread scrutiny.

Beyoncé’s tour follows suit in that both artists rarely step outside North America and Europe, despite the existing fanbases outside of those continents.

The team behind Beyoncé at least had the courtesy to book her shows at venues that would be able to accommodate the size of her projected audiences. Additionally, her tour contains twice the number of performances as Radiohead’s and currently has tickets available at half of her stops. This effectively means that Beyoncé still has purchasable tickets at as many locations as Radiohead has sold out.

Compare these two big-name artists to Norwegian black metal legends Mayhem, a band that is to metal what Radiohead is to rock. While they have not hit a mainstream market as efficiently as the British band, they still have a sizable following. For Mayhem, this comes with the awareness to book shows in every corner of the globe, acknowledging their fans outside of Europe and North America.

Following the outreach of fans spread quickly through the Internet, it is apparent that what Mayhem is doing well, Radiohead is not. A further consideration for a band like Radiohead is the ease of transportation to other

With ardent followers in both South America and Oceania, the feeling of neglect is strong. Fans in Argentina particularly have taken to sites like Reddit to express their disappointment in being unable to see their favorite band live.

It seems odd for a band that has been around for as long as Radiohead and routinely tops charts to have issues with communicating with fans this late in their career. But in actuality, the fans have been dealing with these problems since Radiohead first became famous.

Since “Creep” first hit the charts, the band started a legacy of refusing to play the song in their early sets. They recognized its popularity and purposely stopped performing it to spite an audience filled with dedicated fans so they could get back at people they never truly confirm were actually there. Now, over 20 years later, the band demonstrates that they refuse to learn.

GOLDEN RAMS BASEBALL OFF TO A FAST START

T

he West Chester University baseball team is off to a 12-4 start to the season, highlighted by a 3-1 trip to Virginia in the Division II Baseball Challenge, and a 5-2 trip to Florida in the Russmatt Invitational over spring break.

The Golden Rams recently opened up PSAC Conference play this week with back-to-back doubleheaders against Shippensburg University.

WCU started off the DII Baseball Challenge with a three-game winning streak to advance to the championship game, moving past Philadelphia University, St. Thomas Aquinas, and fellow PSACschool, Slippery Rock University. Like many West Chester Athletics teams have seemed to do in recent seasons, the Golden Rams squared off against East Stroudsburg University in the championship game.

The championship game was cer-

tainly a high-scoring affair, with ESU coming out on top for an 18-10 victory.

Nick Bateman hit a pair of three-run home runs, and Drew Diehl tacked on a home run of his own for West Chester.

The Golden Rams gave up a combined 14 runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and that proved to be too much to overcome.

West Chester started off the trip to Florida with a four-game winning streak, with wins over Notre Dame College (Ohio), two against Pace University, and Minnesota State University, Mankato. WCU suffered its first loss on the trip after splitting a double header with Slippery Rock University, 15-0 and 1-17.

It was a tale of two opposites in the doubleheader. West Chester captured game one, reeling off 13 hits for 15 runs, and held Slippery Rock to just three hits.

Shane Dressler went 3-for-4 in the opener with a 3-run home run and finished with four RBIs. Robert Knox and Joe Sheeran also homered for the Golden Rams in the opener. Nick Ward homered

West Chester had its chance at revenge in the finale of the Florida trip the next day with a final matchup against Slippery Rock, but once again fell short in a back and forth 11-9 loss. The two sides traded the lead four times during the game, but four-run innings in the fourth and sixth for Slippery Rock proved to be too much for the Golden Rams to overcome. WCU scored nine runs on just six hits, while Slippery Rock scored 11 runs on 18 hits.

Sheeran and Ward led the Rams with a pair of RBI. After closing out the Florida trip, West Chester was back in familiar territory this past week with matchups against University of Science in Philadelphia, and a home-and-home doubleheader against Shippensburg. WCU used a three-run sixth inning to take down the U of Sciences 3-1. Mike Cipolla picked up the win on the mound, improving his record to 3-0 on the season. The pair of doubleheaders against Shippensburg marked the opening of PSAC play for the Golden Rams.

West Chester split the doubleheader, 14-9 and 12-3. Dressler hit his second and third home runs of the year, going 4-for5 on the day, including seven RBIs. Five WCU players had a multi-hit first game, including Ward, Diehl, Anthony Salomone, and Bill Ford. Dalton Reed picked up the win on the mound in game one to improve to 3-1 on the season. Mike O’Neil picked up his fifth save on the season during the Golden Ram win. Cipolla pitched game two for West Chester, suffering his first loss of the season, allowing five earned runs in five innings.

Including the March 19 match up against Shippensburg, West Chester has played in four doubleheaders this sea-

son, and in two of those doubleheaders they’ve lost game two. The Golden Rams need to be able to string together a pair of wins every doubleheader opportunity they get in order to build some momentum, and they did that on Saturday, winning the games 6-4 and 9-5. Diehl went 3-for-8 on the day, including a pair of homers, and also scored three runs along the way. Senior first basemen Justin Roman also went 3-for-8 on the day with a home run of his own, adding four RBIs and scoring three runs of his own.

West Chester is getting key production from its big name players. The Golden Rams currently have six players batting over .300 with at least 25 at-bats, with Dressler leading the way with a .358 average, including three homeruns and 18 RBIs. Ward is third on the team with a .328 batting average, and stands second on the team with 10 RBIs. Cipolla and Reed are leading the way on the mound, each going 3-1 on the season, while O’Neil has lead the way in the latter half of games, leading the team with six saves.

West Chester currently stands in third place in the PSAC East with a record of 12-4 on the season, trailing Millersville and East Stroudsburg, who are 19-1 and 19-2, respectively. As long of the core of the order continues to produce with consistent hitting and the pitching rotation continues to stay well-rounded, the Golden Rams look to be on track for another successful season. WCU faces off with first-place Millersville University this week with a home-and-home pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday March 25 and 26.

GOLDEN RAMS HAVE EARLY EXIT IN NCAA TOURNAMENT

W

est Chester University men’s basketball (23-7, 17-5 PSAC East) had a disappointing end to their season, but they should be celebrated for what proved to overall be a highly successful campaign for the Golden Rams.

After falling victim to another defeat at the hands of their greatest adversary, Kutztown University, in their season finale, WCU trekked into the PSAC Conference Tournament with their confidence not wavering at all.

West Chester took down East Stroudsburg University 81-73 in the first round of the PSAC Tournament, but it was the Golden Rams’ second-round triumph over Indiana University of Pennsylvania that will forever be stowed away in the team’s collective memory bank.

WCU and IUP were neck-and-neck for the majority of the contest, but the Crimson Hawks secured a 15-point lead, and it appeared as if the Rams were headed towards an unexpected flameout in the second-round of the tournament when their sights were set on the championship. But the resilient Rams refused to allow their chance at that trophy to rot away on their home floor and fought back, tying the game at 79 with 1:50 left in the second half.

Both squads failed to score another field goal or point for the rest of the half, so the two were prompted to settle the score in an overtime session. West Chester and IUP exchanged blows throughout the duration of overtime, but the one that seemed as if it was going to be the most unnerving was IUP’s Brandon Norfleet’s step back jumper with six seconds left, which gave the Crimson Hawks a one-point lead.

But West Chester’s Matt Penecale raced down the court without calling a timeout and flipped up a beautiful floater, which sank through the home as time expired, giving WCU a 90-89 win.

WCU would go on to lose in the championship to Mercyhurst University 67-70, but Penecale’s shining moment will forever be held in high reverence.

WCU qualified for the NCAA Tournament, where they again clashed with archnemisis Kutztown University, the team that had already beaten them twice this season. The results remained the same in this outing, as the Golden Bears dispatched of the Golden Rams 76-63, ending their season.

This year’s WCU men’s basketball team featured three seniors: guard Mike Wilson (Philadelphia, Pa.), guard Avery Brown (Mt. Laurel, NJ) and Matt Wiseley (Emmaus, Pa.) Wilson averaged 9.1 points per game

this season and was fourth on the team in total assists. Brown, West Chester’s third leading scorer this year at 10.6 per game, was one of West Chester’s most efficient three-point marksmen as well.

Wiseley, West Chester’s leader on the court and in the locker room, averaged 11.9 points per game, which was good enough for second on the team, and he snagged down a team-high 11.7 rebounds per outing. When asked to speak about Wiseley’s impact on WCU basketball, head coach Damian Blair said: “Wiseley has taken this program to a different level. He is an unbelievable leader.”

LADY RAMS’ HISTORIC FOURYEAR RUN COMES TO AN END T

he West Chester University women’s basketball season came to an end last week when they fell to Wheeling Jesuit 71-69 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

This loss marked the end of an era for the Golden Rams. They graduate the six seniors that made this team so special over the years.

West Chester was so close to advancing to the second round. The Golden Rams took a 69-68 lead with two minutes left in the game. West Chester’s one-point lead held up until Wheeling Jesuit had the ball out of a time out with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Wheeling Jesuit’s Chelsea Richardson cleaned up the offensive

glass and put in the go-ahead lay up with seven seconds left in the game.

West Chester would still have plenty of time to try and get down the floor and put in the game-winning basket.

Unfortunately, Mariah Powell of the Golden Rams turned the ball over, and Wheeling Jesuit iced the game with a free throw.

The Rams fought throughout the entire game down to the very last seconds, something that is so typical of this unit that has become more like a family over the years.

Brittany Sicinski, Dallas Ely, Anna Kuntz, Jasmen Clark, and Kendall Benovy all played their final game in a purple and gold uniform. Those have been the starters for West Chester for a majority of the games in the last four years. West Chester also graduates Tiffany Johnson, a key part off the bench for the Golden Rams.

In the four years that this unit has been together, they have improved each year. They have made it to the NCAA Tournament in the past two seasons, and both of those games could have gone either way. This team, the team that mirrors the last four years, should hold their heads high as they have done something so special for this program. They have catipulted West Chester women’s basketball to be recognized as a top tier program.

Another statistic that shows just how special this group has been is that they graduate the top two scorers in women’s West Chester basketball history.

Sicinkski finished as the Golden Rams all-time leading scorer. Ely finished in second all-time in scoring. Sicinksi also set the record for most field goals made with 611. She is the only Golden Ram to ever surpass 600 made field goals. She also finished third in assists and sixth in steals. She showed more

than ever before how all-around great she is.

Looking forward, Coach Keira Wooden is going to have to rebuild.

They have some returning players but again no starters will be returning. She is also losing her top five scorers, her top rebounder and her top assist player.

This will be a complete revamp with a new group of players that will only have three seniors on the roster: Tori Smick, Mariah Traywick and Courtney Wanner.

As the Golden Rams left the court for the last time after handing in their jerseys, they should feel nothing but proud, happy moments that they got to share together and more importantly put on a show for all the fans over the last four years.

fter the first four weeks of NFCA DII Softball, a recent coaches poll ranked the Lady Rams 18th. This is after an impressive 21-3 start.

mont, Fla. during their spring break for 12 exhibition games.

In Florida, the Rams ended their 17game winning streak in a tough game against the University of Charleston.

After coming back from a six run deficit, they finally lost their battle 6-5.

The Golden Rams only suffered one other loss to Grand Valley State, 3-0.

The Rams left Florida with an impressive 10-2 record, bringing their overall record to 20-2 going into regular season play.

In their first home games of the season, West Chester hosted the University of the Sciences on Thursday, March 17.

Sophomore Amanda Houck began the first game against the Sciences.

She had started the season strong with eight wins and two loses. The game was scoreless until Houck let up a two-run homer in the top of the third which gave the Sciences an early lead.

The Rams would not answer this deficit until the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman Alyssa Herion belted a two-run homer. This is her sixth home run of the season. Junior Sarah Walasavage would continue the rally with an RBI, scoring junior Hayley Bollinger. This would tie the score at three going into the seventh inning.

Houck gave up a one-out hit up the middle to allow the winning run to reach the bases. The runner then scored from second after an error, giving the Sciences a 4-3 lead over West Chester.

The Sciences would then go onto shut down the Lady Rams in the field and come away with a 4-3 victory.

Striking 10 out was not enough for Houck as she allowed five hits, four walks, and three earned runs to cross the plate. Houck received her third loss of the season for this game.

Sophomore Sara Ercolani went 2-for-3 with a double.

After the loss, the Rams refocused and went into the second contest with energy and determination. Sophomore Brooke Harner was in the circle, starting game two against the Sciences.

The Rams struck early in the first inning when Herion scored off of a sacrifice fly by senior Laura Altenburger.

Ercolani would have two runners on when she smashed her first collegiate home run over the left field

fence. The Rams would enter the fifth inning with a 4-0 lead.

Harner went into the fifth inning with no hits. This was until the Sciences had a solo home run shot, bringing the score to 4-1. It wasn’t until the sixth inning when the Sciences belted a two-run homer that sophomore Ashley Flesch was called into the game to relieve Harner. With two outs and runners on first and second, Flesch would keep her composure and get out of the jam.

The Rams showed their finesse at the plate when sophomore Lauren Scarpato successfully bunted in a suicide squeeze. On third, sophomore Lexi Trumbetti demonstrated her base running abilities and speed by sprinting home, sliding around the catcher and swiping her hand across the plate before the tag.

Flesch would shut down the Devils, only allowing one hit. Flesch also received her first career save after finishing the game.

Harner picked up her seventh win of the season. Harner allowed three hits and three runs, striking out four and giving up four walks.

The Rams were able to bounce back after their loss and take the second game with a final score of 5-3.

Ercolani’s second inning home run would provide three of the five runs for the Lady Rams. Walasavage and Altenburger both had doubles, which provided key hits for the Rams.

Due to inclement weather, the Golden Rams were forced to cancel two competitions this previous week against Goldey-Beacom and Philadelphia University. The makeup date for Goldey-Beacom College is scheduled to take place at home on Thursday, April 7, at 2:30 pm. There is no makeup date set for Philadelphia University.

The Rams have two home contests this week, Wednesday, March 23 against Holy Family University at 2:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 26 against PSAC competitor Millersville, at 1 p.m.

GYMNASTICS TAKES SECOND PLACE IN ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

n Sunday March 6, the West Chester University gymnastics team (15-10) traveled to Rutgers University to participate in a quad meet with host Rutgers, Towson University, and Southern Connecticut State University. Rutgers

March 12 at home against Cornell University. The Rams finished with a final score of 192, and Cornell with a 192.35, a very close competition.

Valentine once again scored a 39.0 all-around placing first, scoring a 9.75 on vault placing first, 9.65 on bars tying for fourth, 9.775 on beam placing second, and a 9.825 on floor placing first.

A rough start to the meet, led to a surprising finish for the Golden Rams. Keeping spirits high, the Rams finished the meet with a learning experience that can only benefit this talented group of ladies.

On vault, high scores for the teams consisted of Sam Engle scoring a 9.6, and Lindsey Mathis and Maia Curry both scoring a 9.475.

On bars, Lindsay Knapp pulled off a great routine, scoring a 9.45. Emily Loughery and Selena Swanger both scored a 9.55 on beam. Mathis and Swanger both received a score of 9.625, really helping the team score, and Loughery scored an impressive 9.525.

Swanger came in third for the allaround, scoring a 38.575. Swanger tied for sixth with teammates Mathis and Engle with a score of 9.625, placed seventh on bars with a 9.6, scored a 9.675 on beam tying for fifth, and placed fourth on floor with a 9.675.

Curry had an amazing stick on vault scoring a 9.7. Meghan Brannon tied for second on bars scoring a 9.7. The Golden Rams also captured the eighth, ninth, and 10th places on bars: Mathis with a 9.55, Alyssa Hult with a 9.525, and Knapp with a 9.35, respectively.

The Golden Rams also beat the team beam score yet again this season with a 48.375. Loughery performed a spectacular routine on beam scoring her a 9.7 and placing fourth on the event. Cecelia Lorenzen started the Rams off strong on beam scoring a 9.625 and placing

seventh. Placing eighth on beam was Rose Wortman with a score of 9.6. On floor, junior Kristin Torres performed an amazing routine scoring a 9.625 and placing sixth.

On Saturday, March 19 the Golden Rams competed in their last competition of the season at the ECAC Championships held at Bridgeport University, also against Southern Connecticut State University. The WCU gymnastics team received their second highest team score of the season with a 192.325, behind Bridgeport who finished with a 195.125. SCSU finished in third with a final score of 191.3 Valentine finished first in the allaround with a 38.675, tied for eighth on vault with a 9.625, tied for fifth on bars with a 9.725, tied for seventh on beam with a 9.65, and tied for 10th on floor with a 9.675.

Swanger came in second in the all-around with a score of 38.325, tied for fourth on vault with teammate Curry with a 9.65, tied for 10th on bars with a 9.575, tied for 11th on beam with teammate Lorenzen, both scoring a 9.575, and placed 16th on floor with a 9.525.

Loughery had a beautiful beam routine, placing third on the event and scoring a 9.75, the high score on beam for the Rams, and Knapp followed with a 9.7, tying for fourth place. Loughery also had the high score for the Golden Rams on the floor exercise with a 9.725, placing ninth. After being injured in the beginning of the season, Torres finished strong with an amazing floor routine and came in 13th with a score of 9.6.

The Golden Rams finished the season strong and on a high note.

Now, be on the lookout to see if any members of the West Chester University Gymnastics team will be will be continuing their season and traveling to St. Charles, Mo. for the USAG Nationals.

LACROSSE ENTERS TOP 10 A

fter a dominant start to the 2016 season, the West Chester University women’s lacrosse team fell for the first time at the hands of no. 11 ranked Mercyhurst.

The Golden Rams split their two games of the week, first putting on an explosive offensive performance against Millersville University on Tuesday, March 15 in a 21-3 victory.

With the split, West Chester now holds a 5-1 record on the season. The Rams, who were ranked no. 8 in the country, will likely drop in the national rankings but may remain in the top 10.

Tuesday afternoon was a classic Golden Rams performance. West

Chester scored 14 unanswered goals, led by Hannah Cowan’s eight. The achievement for Cowan is the most goals scored in a single game by a West Chester player since West Chester lacrosse alum Jamie Dolan scored eight in a 2012 match up with Queens, NC. Cowan was supported by Ashley Pyle, who put on a dominant performance of her own. Pyle finished with five goals and four assists, doing it all for the Rams. Three of Pyle’s goals came early on in consecutive fashion.

The Rams jumped out to a 4-0 lead just three minutes into the contest and never looked back, posting 14 first half goals. West Chester had their way on the offensive end, while also not allowing Millersville any breathing room in their attack. The Golden Rams’ defense allowed only

eight total shots and six shots on goal for the Marauders.

The Rams unfortunately could not repeat their early week success, and fell in a down to the wire match up against Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon.

Mercyhurst, also considered one of top teams in the PSAC and country, was able to net the game-winning shot on a free position opportunity with just seven seconds left in overtime, giving them the 9-8 victory.

The Rams were in control throughout the first half, leading 6-3 after the first 30 minutes. But, after extending their lead to 8-4, West Chester allowed Mercyhurst to rally with three goals in under a minute, cutting the lead to 8-7. From there, Mercyhurst had all the momentum and was able to tie the game just before the end of regulation.

Pyle, Erin Eckert, and Sami Barnett all scored twice for West Chester, while Cowan and Olivia Martin both added lone goals. The loss is the fourth straight against the Lakers for West Chester, and a repeat of the PSAC semifinal match up last year between the two teams.

Next up, West Chester will travel to Kutztown for another PSAC contest. The Rams are still on the right track, starting the season 5-1, but in the extremely competitive PSAC lacrosse world, West Chester will need to stay on the top of their game. The Rams have a tough stretch ahead with some of their tightest competition.

TENNIS SPRING SEASON IN FULL SWING

s we approach the spring season of the year, we are now in the midst of the men’s and women’s tennis season. The men and women teams both got back on the court starting March 6 facing out of conference opponents University of Charleston, and West Liberty University.

The current men’s tennis team’s record, as of March 19, is one win and six losses. The Lady Rams have five wins and three losses. The Lady Rams past opponents were Grand Valley State University and Southeastern University, where they went 1-1 in that stretch.

In that same stretch, the men’s team was unable to capture a victory as they lost both matches in a trying

effort.

Dating back to March 6 as the Lady Rams faced off against University of Charleston, Steph Cifarelli picked up West Chester’s lone win at sixth singles against Charleston in the team’s opening match of its annual spring break trip to the Sunshine State. Cifarelli was a three-set winner, 2-6, 6-2, and 7-1 in a tie-breaking format for the third set. She battled back after dropping the first set to pick up the win for West Chester.

Charleston swept all three doubles to open up a 3-0 lead. Then, they won the first five singles matches to clinch the win. The Golden Rams faced off against West Liberty University on March 6 as well. West Chester University’s men’s tennis squad was swept, 0-9, by West Liberty in the team’s first match of its annual spring break trip, as they were

unable to get victories.

The next day, however, the Lady Rams were able to get back on track with a victory over Eckerd College.

West Chester University’s women’s tennis squad topped host Eckerd College, 7-2, in a non-league match.

They swept the doubles competition and then took three of the six singles matches to come away with the win.

Lady Rams Maddy Shaak, Abriana Nolan, Alyssa Rees, and Rylee Power were all winners in singles bouts for the Rams as well. Power’s win at third singles, 6-2, 6-3 clinched the match for the visitors. Shaak dispatched her opponent at second singles, 6-1, 6-1, while Nolan was a 1-6, 6-3, 1210 winner at fourth singles, and Rees was an 8-1 winner at fifth singles.

Shaak and Claire Uhle teamed up for an 8-2 win at first doubles. Rees and Power were 8-0 winners at second

doubles, while Nolan and Amalie Hartman were 8-5 winners at third doubles. Unfortunately, the men’s team could not follow along the victory path with the Lady Rams, losing to Eckerd College in a valiant effort all around. West Chester was competitive in the doubles competition, with the first team of Chris Rushing and Lucas von der Heyde eventually falling 9-8 (7-5) in a tie-breaker. The Golden Rams’ second and third doubles teams dropped 8-4 decisions as well.

Moving on down the road for the Golden Rams, we wish them the best of luck in these upcoming games as they attempt to turn their season around.
