from the mainland; and on the very top of this mountain there was a gloomy cavern, in
which dwelt a huge giant called Comoran. He was eighteen feet high, and three yards round, and his fierce and
savage looks were
the terror of the whole neighbourhood.

used to wade over to the mainland in search of his prey

but when he came near, the people
their houses,
and would not return
his departure;
till
left
he took

glutted his appetite upon their cattle,
when he
would throw half-a-dosen oxen upon his back, and tie three times as many sheep and hogs round his waist, and so march back to bis own
Jack having often heard of the giant's sad ravages, resolved to destroy him.
So, early one
winter's evening, he took a horn, a shovel, a
