Hola

Readers!

Another season has come in to greet you and ask you if you are ready for your Quinceañera.

I

’m glad you are reading this, this allows me to introduce you to my oldest daughter Luna Valentina, she is the model on the cover this edition. I must admit I’m very proud of her, especially for her ability to shock us all. She competed in our Miss Cover Girl Experience twice and it has helped her blossom and become interested in different things than before. I was amazed about how much dedication and effort she showcased, even when she knew she could not receive the title. You see she is not a Miss Cover Girl Queen but she is so proud of her experience and it makes me proud to hear her say things when I don’t even ask her too. Some of my other participants do that as well and it brings me great joy to hear it or read it. It lets me know that we are doing something good and positive for our community and I can’t wait to see what everyone continues on doing after their experience with us. But enough about my daughter and the Miss Cover Girl program, you girls are looking for the best Quinceañera Service providers and you can find them all here in the magazine. Find the directory and let mom keep that sheet and both you and your mom should go to QMNevada.com and click in our directory for more businesses that are willing to help you. Don’t be shy, let them know where you found them and ask them about any specials for our Q-readers. Thank you. With all my Heart,

Maria “Cathy” Hernandez The Director of QM Nevada

QM COVER GIRL! SUMMER EDITION I believe in myself with all

my heart!

Luna Hernandez

Hey there sunshine! My name is Luna Hernandez, I’m

15 years old and even though my birth certificate says I was born in Henderson I’m a Las Vegas native (haha). I have always been into the arts and have had great passion for it. As a child I was crazy about literature and music; I would spend most of my time readings books and challenging myself to read difficult books. Then in middle school I joined orchestra and fell in love with playing my viola. I loved drowning into the sweet sound of the strings vibrating with rhythms and melodies. I always wanted a career in the arts but never knew what it was going to be, which one was going to be the ONE. But ever since I started participating in Miss Cover Girl, I have found the interest to continue into modeling. I love everything about it! The different transformations, the magic of the lighting, and I just love the beauty of it. I have big dreams and plans for the future. And I do plan on pursuing them because I believe in myself with all my heart! So believe in yourself and pursue your dreams.

XOXO LVH

Picking the venue. • Check and make sure the venue location is a reputable, check any reviews of the location. You want to make sure you’re selecting the right location for your special day!

Important questions to ask It is finally time to start planning your quinceañera. One of the first to do’s is to book your venue, the place where your dream quinceañera would come true. But, how to decide which venue fits all your needs? This questionnaire would help you make a wise decision when choosing your quince venue. Take note!

• Check availability and how many other events are booked that day? • What is the price per person and/or package price? Is it within your budget? • What is included in the package?

Payment • How much is the deposit? How can we make payments? When is final payment due? • What is the total cost, with taxes, gratuity, and any other fees? • What is the cancellation policy?

Venue Policies • Can you provide your own vendors (photographer, DJ, band, décor, cake, food, etc), or do they have a list of vendors? • What is allowed and what is not allowed, what are the restrictions? Example: can you bring in your own food, cake, or liquor? • Do you provide food and beverage? • Is there a complementary food tasting available? • When can your vendors arrive for setup? • When are final details due? • Is there a contact person day of your event? • Do you charge for additional people if they show day of my event, and I am over my guaranteed amount of people?

MOST IMPORTANT. **Make sure you have a signed agreement between you and the venue with all details promised and selected (date, time, price, any additional fees, etc). What will be included and excluded, and what is the total estimated cost based on what you contracted for**

CoverLook The look that was created for Luna was one of soft elegance. With a dress that stepped out of the realm of conventional, for Quinceañeras, and into a modern rendition of the Victorian Era, it was important that her hair and makeup flowed with that concept. THE MAKEUP look exhibited clean and perfected skin by using the Makeup Forever HD Foundation. Coupled with hushed, soft pink hues to bring a bit of color to the skin with blush from MAC Cosmetics. Followed by a soft peachy nude lip created by blending colors from Ingot and Anastasia Beverly Hills. Her eyes spoke of whispered romance. This was achieved by bringing in the blushed antiqued tones of gold and bronze from the dress into her daytime smokey eye. Making it a dress of dreamy elegance. With a dress that conveys elegance, makeup that speaks to dreamy romance, her hair falls into those same categories. Inspired by vintage Hollywood glam, Luna’s hair had a young red carpet flair. She was wearing a side swept fringe, with a low pined updo off to one side.

THE DESIGN OF THE DRESS has a modern twist on the Victorian era. The corset’s hand made detail allows its one shoulder sleeve and full skirt bring such era to life with its delicate and elegant champagne color lace.

THE GORGEOUS PEACH CHAMPAGNE EARRINGS complemented not only the dress but the make up as well. The bust of the marquise shape gems and the perfect pear drop size allowed them to shine and complement the hairstyle without overshadowing the dress.

With all three concepts coming together (hair, makeup and dress, her Quinceañera look was complete. 16

The College

A

Major

major is a specific subject area that students specialize in. Typically, between one-third and one-half of the courses you’ll take in college will be in your major or related to it.

At some colleges, you can even: • Major in two fields. • Have a major and a minor (a specialization that requires fewer courses than a major). • Create your own major.

When to Choose a Major

At most four-year colleges, and in the case of many majors, you won’t have to pick a major until the end of your sophomore year. This gives you plenty of time to check out various subjects and see which ones interest you. Some majors — like areas of engineering — are exceptions to this rule. You have to commit to these fields of study early so you have time to take all the required courses. If you’re earning a two-year degree, you’ll probably select a major at the start because the program is much shorter.

How to Choose a Major

Take courses in areas that appeal to you, and then think about which subject truly motivates you. Stephanie Balmer, dean of admissions at Dickinson College, suggests you take “classes in which you’re going to be confident, but at the same time, take some risks.” She notes that a class you never planned to take could end up helping you choose your major.

You Can Change Your Mind

If you’re not sure about your college major while you’re in high school, don’t worry. Most students switch their major during college. Even students who think they are sure about what they want to major in often change their mind. Shawna, a college sophomore, began college as a physics major but switched to electrical engineering. During her first semester, she discovered that college physics “was all the things about my physics class in high school that I didn’t like. And my engineering class was all the stuff I actually did like.”

Majors and Graduate School

Some colleges offer advising programs — such as premed or prelaw — to students who plan on attending medical school, law school or graduate school. These programs are not the same as majors; you still need to pick a major. College students who are planning to continue their education in professional or

graduate programs often choose a major related to their future field. For example, undergraduates in premed programs often major in biology or chemistry. They don’t have to, though — as long as students fulfill the course requirements of the graduate program they want to enter, they can major in any subject they like.

Majors and Professions

If you specialize in something like nursing, accounting or engineering, you’re learning a specific trade. Many majors, however, prepare you to enter a range of careers once you graduate. For many students, picking a college major is not the same as choosing a job. It will be up to you to pick a career path you like. For example, a degree in English literature might lead you to a job in publishing, teaching, advertising, public relations or law, among other fields. Remember, you’re not alone when choosing a major. Ask academic and peer advisers for help.

The “best” college for a student is not necessarily the most prestigious but the college that offers a student the most opportunities to develop a student’s interests. https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/explore-careers/college-majors/the-college-major-what-it-is-and-how-to-choose-one

Must Of A

Quinceañera Presentation.

M

aybe you have attended many quinceañeras and/or have been dama of many of your friends, or maybe you’re the first of your friends having a quinceañera. Either way if you are not sure what goes first, dancing with your court or your dad or you want to make sure you don’t leave anything aside here’s a timeline for your Quinceañera reception.

1

The Introduction of the Corte de Honor (Court of Honor). The corte de honor is first presented prior to the Quinceañera. Each name of the corte is announced as they enter. This announcement is usually done with background quinceañera music.

2

The Presentation of the Quinceañera.

After the presentation of the corte de honor, the Quinceañera is finally introduced. She may choose to walk in on the arm of her escort. A special song is also played for her entrance.

36

QM SUMMER 2015

3

Crowning of the Quinceañera (La corona).

The headpiece worn by the Quinceañera is to be replaced with a tiara or crown. The mother of the Quinceañera is the one who does the crowning for her daughter.

The Quinceañera Vals.

The Quinceañera first dances with her father during a special song, (look for our article “Father Daughter Dance List Songs”). The Quinceañera can then dance with her honor escort and finally the La corte de honor can join in.

The Thank You.

The parents give thanks to the Quinceañera for turning out so beautifully and also thank God for bringing her to them. The parents also gives thanks to God for seeing her through every day up to her dream day. The Quinceañera then gives thanks to her parents for everything they do as well as giving her the party. She also gives thanks to the padrinos and to the guest for coming.

Presentation of the Last Doll (La última muñeca). The Quinceañera gives away her last doll to a little girl; it symbolizes she is no longer a child but a young woman.

4 6 7 5

8

Changing of the Shoes.

One of the most important events. It is done by the father of the Quinceañera, helped by her mother.

Cutting the Cake:

9

This could be done any time after the previous events in the night, but it is recommended not to do it too late so guests can enjoy it without delay.

The Toast.

The father usually leads the toast for the Quinceañera. The toast can also be done by the MC, DJ, bandleader, or even the honor escort.

Keep in Touch

AFTER MY

QM NEVADA

HELLO

future Quinceañeras! My experience as #MISSCOVERGIRL was a dream come true! I worked so hard to be crowned and the results paid off! I had so much fun attending all the outings and being on the Cover of Quinceañera Magazine and to be role model to so many young girls was such an honor! WOW! My life started booming after Cover Girl! Whether it was on the runway or on the field. I participated in Fashion Week Las Vegas season 5 and won! I also got signed with one if the biggest agency’s in the world, Ford LA, NY, and Paris. I also compete on track meet, and this last track season I won 1st place in my 400 at state!

For future participants I want to encourage you to get out of your comfort zone and ALWAYS strive for your dreams, make them your reality. I am currently building my portfolio for Ford models, and this summer I am so excited to announce that I will be going to NEW YORK for a month to get some work done! And I just joined the Nevada Gazelles club track team! My dreams are big but my goals are bigger and I am very determined to achieve each and every one of them!!! (if that’s God’s will for my life.) I hope to walk the runway for major designers in places like New York, Paris, Milan, and of course continue with track and strive to get a scholarship to college for my hurdles! #tracknation Definitely! Miss Cover Girl and Quinceañera Magazine organization helped me in numerous ways! Up to public speaking (which I was terrified at first but have now overcame) and walking in heels, I have to admit I was a klutz at first but now I can run in them! (Emoticon wink) For future participants I want to encourage you to get out of your comfort zone and ALWAYS strive for your dreams, make them your reality. Don’t ever forget, win humbly and lose gracefully, that’s what will make you a true Queen! To be inspired is great, but to inspire is even greater... And that’s what being a Miss Cover Girl is all about! Stay Fierce, xoxo Shelbi2b

Calhan Cougars CONQUERED OUR DIRECTOR WITH QUESTIONS

A

s the Director of QM Nevada I have had the opportunity to be a guest speaker in different schools and programs, so when my niece Evelyn asked me to be part of Cahlan Elementarys Career Day I could not say no. I had fun explaining my role as the director, informing them about the company and giving them a copy of our magazine. To my surprise a few weeks after, I received the cutest Thank You notes from the second to fourth graders. Now some of these notes have questions, so, what better way than to answer them within our pages. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did and if you know a Cahlan Elementary Student please don’t hesitate to share these Q and A’s.

uestions 1.-

3.-

. Is it hard to be a leader for the Quinceanera? By: Karla Reyes

. How did you make the magazines? By: Yuridia

A. Karla, being a leader can be challenging either here at QM or in any other place. Being a leader means you are a role model and that you are able to stand your ground. But it also means that you are a person to trust and that can be scary if you do not know how to accept your mistakes.

A. Yuridia, to make magazines you need a team. Once the designers and writers have made it pretty and interesting for you to read you must print it. Which is done by another part of the team, you need large printers and a specific type of paper, a lot of ink and someone making sure the quality is great.

2.-

4.-

. What do you love about your job? By: Betzaida

A. Betzaida, I love your question. Many ask how I do it and I always answer I don’t know because I love it but you are asking me what I love. I love it all, I love seeing girls read the magazine, the girls transforming themselves during the training of Miss Cover Girl and the dances and dresses on the stage during the Q-expo. I love the excitement we can bring to all of our Q-readers.

. What is the hardest part? By: Ruby

A. Ruby, like any job the hardest part is anything you do not enjoy but for me there are difficult moments all the time but the hardest for me is during the pageant when I cannot crown everyone.

I love the excitement we can bring to all of our Q-readers.

A. Hi Karen, Here in QM Nevada we do not make dresses but we know a

few people that do make them. Did you know that they are great local designers here in LAS VEGAS 6.-

. How do you get the girls to participate and put on the dresses? By: Ariana Jefferson

A. Osorio, training the girls is not hard for me because I have Brian Sanchez and Elisabet Reira doing all the training, maybe I should ask them if that is hard. 10.-

. How did you stand up if they didn’t dare you? By: Jesus

A. Hola Jesus, sometimes you just have to dare yourself to shine. Like I told your whole class, every time you are asked to get in front of a public just go for it, pretend it’s a dare and dare yourself. It’s the only way you will amaze yourself. 8.-

. Can girls that are 16-20 participate? By: Ashley Ocampo

A. Ashley, girls that are older than 16 cannot participate in QM Miss Cover Girl but there are other pageants and activities they are able to join.

. Do you get happy when many girls want to be in the Quineañera Magazine? And do you get mad when girls don’t listen to you and do whatever they want? By: Karla Casillas

A. Lizet, every cover must be the winner of our pageant Miss Cover Girl and to be a Miss Cover Girl participant you must be a Hispanic girl that is 13-16 years old. 13.-

. Why do girls have a Quinceañera when they turn 15? By: Elizabeth Flores

A. Karla, I get very happy when any amount of girls want to be in our magazine and I can get bad when the girls do not listen, but I have been lucky enough to have girls that do listen.

A. Hola Elizabeth, Hispanic girls know from a very young age that her 15th birthday is special. You see a Quinceañera is a coming of age celebration; it’s when a girl is allowed to be more responsible with her own decisions. The word Quinceañera has the word quince in itself, which means 15. So you must have a Quinceañera when you turn 15 and if your parents want to of course.

11.-

14.-

A. Ariana, we are always asking girls to be part of QM and Miss Cover Girl and its not so hard since every one wants to get dolled up. 7.-

. Is it hard to train the girls? By: Osorio

. Is your job hard? By: David

A. David, my job can be seen as hard but since I love it I do not see it as very hard, but like I told Ruby the hardest part is when I cannot crown all the girls in Miss Cover Girl pageant. 12.-

. What and who will be on the cover of the magazine? By: Lizet Hernandez

. Why did you begin this job? By: Anthony Solano

A. Dear Anthony, I began this job when I was a bit bored at my other job. I looked for something more interactive and found QM looking for new employees and now I’m the director having the most fun.

Have You Noticed The Pain? By Luna Hernandez

Many of us have not paid attention to the warning signs that our friends, family members or acquaintances have been silently showing us.

A

ccording to ABCNews 1 in every 12 teens harm themselves either by cutting, burning, punching, reopening wounds, or any form of self inflicted pain. These statistics scare me, more so because I realized why I was doing that to myself. You see, when a teenager starts to become self-conscious, he or she will experience the need to fit in. Self harming can be the trend they go for or a result of feeling unwelcomed and not fitting in. I know that saying that self harm is a trend might be difficult for you to believe but it is. Social media has influenced a major impact on self harm both in positive and negative ways. Some teenagers are introduced to the idea of self harm this way, seeing as how many teenagers rely on it. Many social media celebrities motivate self harmers to stop and quit, but many others make it a joke and motivate others to continue this trend. Either

64

QM SUMMER 2015

way, social media introduces the idea and motivation to either start or quit self harm. Of course self harm isn’t just a result of a trend, it is also tied to depression and bullying which are a more serious and personal matter. In such cases, professional help may be needed but you can make a difference. Many teenagers have found ways to get away with it and have found ways to hide it. But more often than not, they get away with it without hiding it because either families or friends are ignorant or because the self-harmer is always isolated. A simple hello or smile can scare away the monstrous thoughts of self harm. You see, every time someone harms themselves, there are consequences. It can be emotional and/or physical, as simple as a scar, as serious as a mental illness, or as extreme as death. Do not be afraid to be a silent hero.

so silent though. She was worried when I missed school and went straight to the counselors office. When my mom got the call I can only imagine her thoughts. You see I started self-harm as a trend to fit in but then depression took over and then it just became an addiction, a way to cope with every day situations. Not only did I need professional help, but I had to start by helping myself help others. Remember no one can help you, if you don’t help them understand you.

A simple hello or smile can scare away the monstrous thoughts of self harm. Thankfully, I had my mom allow me to participate in the Miss Cover Girl pageant as a distraction and next thing I knew, I loved it. It gave me so much self confidence and helped me showcase my inner beauty. Not only that, but it gave me a chance to socialize and meet new girls who now have become my friends. It helped me realize that a simple hello or hug can result in a great friendship. Which is all I needed but not everyone is like me so we must treat every self harmer differently by first understanding them. I do believe that if we work together we can make a difference, we do not need to have rallies or big groups, we can silently work together by noticing the pain and being there for someone who needs it. Everyone deserves to enjoy life because it was given to them and we should not let anything take away our right of happiness. So for those who self harm, speak up, the silence is deafening, and for those who don’t, listen for the voices unheard.

OUR Y E T A R B E CEL RENT E F F I D A IN QUINCES ! FUN WAY

D

o you want to try something fun and different for your quinceañera celebration? What about having a Pool Party!? It may sound ‘out of context’ for a quinceañera, but read some cool ideas we have for you, you’ll see is not a bad idea at all.

Where? Tradition

You can make your quince at your backyard if you have a swimming pool, ask a family member or family friend if they have one, or you can use a local community pool.

66

QM SUMMER 2015

It is very important you dance your vals with your dad and have your quinces photo session. Since this is a pool party your dress, hair and makeup have to be simpler. You can set up a small dance floor (or designate an area as a dance floor) where you can have your dance with your dad and give a toast. Do this before you change into your swimsuit and get in the pool. For your pictures you can dress up days before your party and have a fun photo session, with some of your friends and your parents.

Decoration & Food Since it is a pool party you can keep everything with a beach decoration, using shells, starfish and beach buckets or you can also theme it up, for example a Hawaiian pool party. You can have a table with snacks and a cooler with popsicles. Don’t forget the drinks, lemonade would be perfect with this hot weather. For food, a carne asada would be perfect.

Music Keep it simple. An ipod with speakers is all you need!

Cake

To make it more fun Have volleyball net on the swimming pool and beach balls. Also you can give your friends a Lei (the hawaian collar) as they get to your party, and give away flip flops as party favors.

It’s your quince of course you’ll have a cake or even better a cupcake cake! You can use summer/ beach decoration for it.

Don’t be afraid

of having and e. Enjoy ur ebration for yo quinc authentic and fun cel ! fun ve ha es, ur quinc the summer, enjoy yo

Exercise can help with your grades!

D

id you know exercise is not only about sports? It’s about moving your body, so if you’re not interested in any sports you can try something different like walking, dancing, or even mopping! Did you know that teens that are more active might do better on test? That’s right, one school has shown that 30 minutes of walking a treadmill improved student’s problem- solving skills by 10%.

Did you know exercising has other benefits like sleeping better, feel more energetic, and be less stressed? So as you can see exercising and being active has a lot of benefits, not only improves your health, but also can help you improve your grades. Isn’t that awesome?!

Start with a small goal.

Start exercise slowly, and go with what you know. If you can walk for 10 minutes, begin by going for a 10-minute walk every day. If you can walk longer than that, great.

72

QM SUMMER 2015

Go for it! Just remember it is OK to start small. To stay motivated and keep it up, make it a goal to add just a few more minutes of exercise each week. That way you’ll be sure to make it past the beginning, when it is tough, and find your stride. Shoot for being active for at least 1 hour a day. If possible, exercise in the morning before school. Going to the gym or the treadmill before class can do wonders for your grades. Can’t do mornings? Pick another time and stick with it. Having a regular time set aside for exercise will increase the likelihood that you will follow through on your plan. When you have exercise scheduled, you don’t have to worry about when you’ll fit it in. And last but not least don’t forget to have an 8 hours sleep and a healthy breakfast.

Try starting this healthy habit and enjoying all the wonderful benefits of it!

is Not an Option

eing a teenager of course isn’t as easy as it seems. Dealing with grades, homework, school activities, a boyfriend or girlfriend, family, or many other situations. That shouldn’t stop you from doing the things you love. This message is for all teenagers or those in need of a little motivation. Don’t let the little things stop you from achieving bigger things because honestly as you grow up you will soon have to start dealing with jobs, bills, and even children but that should be far in the future. Many teenagers complain about having too much homework or homework being too hard. Here’s the thing, this work you get from school is like a ticket to a greater future, a better life, and success. The harder the things are the better experiences you have. It’s worth all the effort and work you put into it. A quote I know is, “No matter your obstacles, live a happy life.” - Sam Berns No matter how many obstacles or problems you have don’t let that bring you down and don’t let the little things

If you don’t succeed at first keep trying. Failure shouldn’t be a disgrace or something you should be ashamed of. affect you and think your not capable of achieving big things. Participating in the Miss Cover Pageant wasn’t easy. Losing 2 times it hurts but every time it happens it just tells me I wasn’t ready but that it shouldn’t stop me from trying it again or trying new things. My brother, Keishmer Cardoso, is in the U.S. Army. For the past 5 years not only has he joined the Army but he has also graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice and recently graduated with his second degree in Sociology. Through all this not only has he dealt with a two jobs sometimes graveyard, bills from school, bills to pay his house, but also joined the Army. People always ask me why I think he’s my role model, why is losing him my biggest fear, or why he’s my motivation. My answer is because without him I would give up on everything. My brother has taught me that even if he isn’t around to keep working hard, to never give up, and to keep telling myself that if I fail once or twice or more to keep trying because if I really want it then I can achieve it. To this day I don’t give up I try to work harder to earn and achieve my goals.

78

QM SUMMER 2015

If you don’t succeed at first keep trying. Failure shouldn’t be a disgrace or something you should be ashamed of. Failure is a lesson and a shove to keep trying. You may have to try once, twice, or maybe up to ten times. As you keep going you learn more things along the way to help you achieve your goals and overcome your obstacles. Obstacles can slow you down but be strong and motivate yourself and work harder so you can earn your goals. Many kids don’t have opportunities as some of us. Some can’t go to school, have clothes, eat, or a family. Before throwing everything away or giving up think about all the things you have thank your parents, siblings, and teachers that haven’t given up on you and have pushed you to achieve better things. Don’t give up and keep motivating yourself because it pays off in your future. Hard work pays off trust me! Your former MCG participant,

Kaily Cardoso
