CONSTELLATIONS

A great season of theatre is like a great album. It is a series of unique experiences that form a meaningful whole and take you on a journey. The journey across our nine shows in 2017 is deliberately varied, but unified by our desire to share the very best with Brisbane. You can see urgent new Australian stories, the finest international plays, the hottest next generation of talent and the country’s most outstanding artists. Each of the plays in Season 2017 achieves what theatre does best – puts human experience under the microscope. We can see ourselves reeling with chaos in the workplace, enraptured in new romance, navigating the parent-child relationship, celebrating with family and wrestling with a failing marriage. Theatre is unique in its capacity to change how we feel – about ourselves, about our lives, about our universe. Welcome to the next era of your Queensland Theatre.

Welcome Note Constellation; noun Any of 88 arbitrary configurations of stars … which form a pattern and have a name.

Sam Strong Artistic Director

There is no small amount of symbolism in naming a play about love and quantum physics after random patterns of stars. Each singular burning point is not much on its own, a dot in the black. But when seen alongside its neighbours, clustered together and joined by invisible lines, pictures emerge. Constellations are everywhere in nature: in the neural pathways of the brain; in the chain reactions that link one atom to another; and in the series of moments that make up a life – all singular parts that represent an infinite number of possibilities when joined together. The joining, however, does not happen by accident. The joining is up to us.

This is the work of scientists. It is also the work of artists. In the same collection of events there are a million stories to be told, from the boisterous to the tragic to the life affirming. Constellations has been a hit around the world because it somehow manages to tell all of these stories at once – all the possibilities of two lives shared, and the even more infinite number of tales those lives can tell. Enjoy, Sam

Humans are meaning makers. Our brains are hard-wired to draw connections. We transform the seemingly arbitrary into the significant. We recognize patterns and give them weight. To make our discoveries accessible to others we join the dots. We give these connections names and describe them in narrative terms.

“We have all the time we’ve ever, and never had.” – Marianne, Constellations.

Director's Note Among abundant theories across many fields of time’s constitution, there is no consensus. It is at the same time innately grasped and empirically confounding; the problem of what it is persists and contrives endless supposition. Kat Henry

What we might say is that chronological time, the collection of progressive linear instances, is performed – it is attached to actions to which we are habituated in our daily lives: as we make a cup of tea, or wait in traffic, as we complete a day’s work, as we take a phone call. Further, chronology is measured through various indicators – the trajectory of the sun throughout a day or its place in the sky during the changing seasons, the hands that move on a clock, or the period of time between an activity’s beginning and its completion. We experience time in our bodies, via the adrenaline of immediacy and surprise, time’s apparent contraction within an exciting and long-anticipated event, or the expansive agony of awaiting a loved one’s return. We have an innate sense of growing older, of events that have passed, of things to which we look forward. In physics this is described as the arrow of time, charging ever forward in its single trajectory. But there is an alternative conception of time that sits contrary to chronology - one of immediacy, inherently complete in every present moment, and without beginning or end. This is time as an infinite instance, spontaneously presenting endless opportunity.

“A kind of time charged with promise and significance,” suggests Paul Chan, in A Time Apart, as he describes kairological time - not the quantity but the quality of time. In physics this time is symmetrical; it is constant and immutable, eternal, absolute, and ultimately transcendent. This is time that defies oppression, maintains love, and refuses death. It is the time we experience when we are present with it, not waiting, or longing, or apprehensive about its passing. Ironically, it’s within this conception of time as something outside ourselves that we can make it truly our own – as though only when we relinquish attempts to control time can it be transcended. And ironically further still, it’s the kind of time of which we need so much more. The universe probably doesn’t care about chronological time, and perhaps neither should you. If you want to live forever, seize the moment - choose kairos and transcend. Kat Henry Director

WELCOME TO THE BILLE BROWN STUDIO To ensure that patrons enjoy the performance, management asks you to note:

• Cameras, tape recorders and paging devices should not be used inside the auditorium. • Switch off alarms and mobile phones prior to the performance. • A single cough measures approximately 65 decibels of sound. The use of a handkerchief helps greatly to soften the sound. The management reserves the right to refuse admission, also to make any alterations to the cast which may be rendered necessary by illness or other unavoidable causes. Patrons are advised that the Bille Brown Studio has EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES, a FIRE ALARM system and EXIT passageways. In case of an alert, patrons should remain calm, look for the closest EXIT sign in GREEN, listen to and comply with directions given by the inhouse trained attendants and move in an orderly fashion to outside the Studio.
