Iknow that many people have suffered much more than I have, losing their homes or many, if not all, of their possessions, but this is what happened at my place.
I have a liquidambar tree, a beautiful deciduous tree, in my front yard.
When we planted it, we had no idea it would grow so big. However, in the 30 or more years since we planted it, it has grown so tall that the Energex people cut the outside branches so they don’t overhang the wires, and some branches have grown over the roof of our two-storey home. We put leaf guard in the gut tering so leaves would not block them and pre vent the water from going down the drainpipe.
On Sunday 27 February, just before midnight, I heard a tremendous crash, and knew it wasn’t thunder. In our spare bedroom, that I use as a sewing room, part of the ceiling had fallen. The newspaper insulation that was put in years ago had got wet, and therefore heavy, and caused the ceiling to collapse, spilling all the crushedup newspaper onto the wall, the bed, the floor, my sewing machine and the desk it was sitting
on. The leaves and seed pods sitting on top of the leaf guard had prevented the water from getting into the guttering, and it seeped into the ceiling instead. There is also other minor water damage in two other rooms.
The next morning, I discovered that part of our wooden paling fence had sagged onto the neighbour’s shed down the back, and that caused the next few metres of the fence to fall onto the ground.
It will probably be a while before anything is fixed properly, as other people’s requirements are more urgent than mine. The emergency electrical fixer came, tied up the wires inside the roof cavity, disconnected the ceiling light and cut off the part of the ceiling that was hanging down vertically. The emergency ceiling repairer also came, put board in the ceiling hole to stop more from falling down, and cleaned up the newspaper insulation. Now that I could walk into the room, I could see that the curtain, mattress, pillow and bedspread will all have to be replaced. but I am sure that I will be at the end of a long queue because other people’s needs are greater.
Iget asked, “how do I learn to be a better leader,” or we have some misunderstanding and disappointment in staff performance.
So much has been happening to ourselves and our teams this year. It is all putting a lot of pressure on people, not just what is happening at work or home but also amazing how many are looking at the world’s unrest. We need to be part of a positive culture to keep productivity (for ourselves and our teams). Something that makes us feel connected, more valued again, a need to feel your commitment and to grow and be part of something future-focused.
So what are some tips on Leadership and resolving employment relationships? Firstly remember:
“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself; When you become a leader, success is all about growing others” Jack Welch.
My tips are:
• To KNOW YOURSELF, understanding your EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE - your emotional awareness of what makes you tick and how you interact with others. How can you inspire others? Know the strengths and weaknesses of yourself and your team.
• Develop a very clear VISION and SET CLEAR GOALS to stay focused. Know your strategies and live your strategies. You are the role model for everyone’s FUTURE FOCUS.
• Have BUSINESS VALUES (5-6 not too many) that guide everyone in performing and treating
their fellow team members and customers.
• Create great COMMUNICATION AND ENERGY. DON’T leave people out of the loop, give, and receive feedback- communication has to be two ways, but it starts with you. Listen, Listen, Listen and spend time with all your people.
• Create a CONVERSATION AND COACHING CULTURE (asking questions). Do this in both formal and informal ways by creating those learning opportunities, both big and small, for continuous development and encouragement.
• Create TRUST – be approachable, honest, and committed. Don’t blame - encourage learning. Trust your team to have a go but support them when they fall and make mistakes.
All these tips apply whether you are a solo entrepreneur or a team.
Lastly, create a SUPPORTIVE TEAM around you – internally and externally - Mentors, Coaches, HR organisations. Know when to ask for help; the buck will always stop with you, but we can help too.

Safe Haven Community and White Lady Funerals are asking locals to accept the challenge and host a World’s Biggest Dinner Party on May 14, 2022, to raise funds and awareness of the work Safe Haven Community does to support women at risk of domestic abuse.
Safe Haven Community Executive Director Jaeneen Cunningham said women were the fastest growing group of homeless people in Australia, and domestic and family violence was the leading cause.
The charity provides early intervention path ways, allowing women and their children to escape abusive relationships before the situation escalates to physical violence.
“Your involvement in the World’s Biggest Dinner Party will help provide crucial
accommodation desperately needed additional support services, that will directly reach over 1000 women a year across Australia,” Ms Cun ningham said.
White Lady Funerals Queensland Regional Manager Tania Dell’Amico encouraged people, businesses and community groups to host their own dinner party event in May to support Safe Haven Community.
Ms Dell’Amico said week in week out her team saw the heartbreaking consequences of the ep idemic of domestic violence, and it had to stop. “As a funeral director I have looked after too many families that have lost loved ones due to domestic and family violence,” Ms Dell’Amico said.
“Raising awareness of this contemptible issue is an important priority for us. Our people are on the front line of this issue. Our people don’t want to continue burying the victims of domestic violence.
“The impact of domestic violence affects so many people. I want us to be a part of the change, so we are not called to look after ‘that women’, ‘that family’, ‘those children’. That’s why White Lady Funerals has chosen to spon sor the World’s Biggest Dinner Party.”
Ready to take the challenge?
Get your very own fundraising page and use the ‘Host Kit’ to organise your event to invite family, friends, colleagues and/or sponsors.
Safe Haven Community is a NFP small charity that helps women and chil dren fleeing domestic abuse. We are registered with the ACNC and the ATO, so all donations are tax deductible.
Our service offers temporary accommodation (from kind citizens in the community that donate their spare rooms to us to manage) so women have somewhere to go rather than sleeping in their cars when they flee. We have counselling services to help you with support and just to have someone to talk to. We also accompany women to court when they are usually alone and find just seeing the perpetrator in court intimidates them. So having someone by their side makes a world of difference.
Safe Haven Community targets vulnerable women who are experiencing coercive control (invisible abuse like economic, sexual, verbal, fear and intimidation, gaslighting and threats, just to name a few). It’s the abuse that you can
not evidence. It’s the shame that women feel. If we can help women and children as an early intervention process, there will be less women & children being killed, like Hannah Clarke and her children.
Sadly, offering a service like ours, does costs a lot of money. Although most of us work vol untarily and give more hours in a day towards our cause, we are dedicated to ensuring the vulnerable are supported. We still have to pay operational costs to run the service. As we are not funded by any Government organisations, we need to rely on the kindness of citizens and business to help us raise funds.
Each year we organise fundraising activities and we have had many businesses support us in these efforts. This year we have had high teas and fashion fundraisers. We do like to chose one major event that will bring awareness to our service and raise a substantial amount to increase our capacity.
This year we are organising ‘The Biggest Dinner Party’. There are many people in society that want to help but just don’t know what to do. So, we thought how great would it be to have a dinner party in your own home, invite some friends, everyone can bring a plate and there would be a small cost which would go to Safe Haven Community.
Everyone can be innovative with the concept. You could have beer and pizza to a 3-course dinner party. The choice is yours. We have had some organisations like Rotary who are or ganising a large gathering on a private property, with bands etc. So, it can be whatever you like, just as long as you bring awareness to domes tic abuse and how it can affect anyone and you have fun along the way.
What is really important with this project is ensuring more women and children are saved. They do not become homeless or worse still a
statistic. If we can get others in the community to help spread the word, that is the ultimate goal for us.
We opened this up to the whole of Australia and to friends and family overseas. Domestic abuse has no boundaries, it happens all over the world.
We have been lucky with this project to have White Lady Funerals get behind us and sponsor us. White Lady Funerals is Australia wide and will be supporting us by holding events and advertising the event within the community.
So, we are asking the community to support Safe Haven Community by registering to hold a dinner party and raise some much needed funds. To have fun while bringing awareness to the community about our service to help the vul nerable. To be educated about coercive control and to feel great that you have done something great to save someone’s life.
Register yourself or a team and please spread the word to your family, friends and work colleagues to join in. https://www. safehavencommunity.com.au/worlds-biggest-dinner-party
Over the weekend of the 17th – 21st March the Ladies Long Weekend group travelled to Hobart for the 5th official departure and what a time was had by all. This time I had 24 wonderful women join me with over half who have joined me on previous departures. We arrived mid afternoon and our first stop was the gorgeous and aptly named Puddleduck Winery. Sitting on a man-made dam, the winery is surrounded by vineyards and of course –ducks! It’s very peaceful sitting and enjoying the wines with the sounds of the ducks all around you and believe me – they are certainly part of the family there. The cellar door is famous for
their reverse BYO you bring the picnic food and they supply the beverages. Our ladies enjoyed a tasting of 5 of their wines along with a delicious Tasmanian tasting platter.
For our stay we were based at the first Mövenpick in Australia. Centrally located, we were a very short and easy walk to the Hobart Waterfront and Salamanca where the majority of Hobart’s nightlife and entertainment can be found. On arrival we were greeted with sparkling wine and of the hotel’s delectable chocolates from their daily ‘chocolate hour’. Switzerland being famous for its chocolate, Mövenpick dedicates one hour in the afternoon to an exquisite tasting experience with Mövenpick chocolate variations and homemade creations such as éclairs, brownies, truffles, chocolate fountains and is available in all Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts worldwide.
For our welcome dinner we walked the short distance down to the Hunter Street precinct for our dinner in one of Hobart’s iconic restaurants – Peacock and Jones. Located within the oldest waterfront warehouses, the restaurant has an intimate and ‘luxury warehouse’ décor. Here we enjoyed a 5-course dinner with matching wines – it was incredible! It was safe to say we all had our fill and were ready for bed.
Friday saw us join Pennicott Wilderness Journeys and travel to Bruny Island to taste and experience the best of the island. Our guide Luke had been with the company for 7 years and he was very passionate about the company, their tours and Bruny Island itself. It was a magical day with tastings of Honey, Chocolate, Beer, Cheese, Oysters and an incredible fish and chip lunch with an incredible
Helloworld Travel Rochedale, Locally owned and operated
view. We also visited landmarks on Bruny Island like Bligh Museum, Truganini Lookout, Two Tree Point & Resolution Creek and we managed to spot two of the island’s rare and unique White Wallabies.
After such a big day, it was a night at leisure. Many had a light dinner and went to bed early.
Saturday morning was spent shopping and enjoying the Salamanca Markets at our own pace. What a treat! With over 230 stallholders consisting of artisans, designers and producers - it’s as Tasmanian as you can get. At midday, 22 of the ladies met and we travelled over to MONA Museum via the MONA Ferry. This is a fabulous experience and for a little bit more you can travel in style in the ‘Posh Pit’ and enjoy drinks and a small sample of delicious food. The ladies were all left a little shocked as MONA is not for the faint of heart, but it is well worth the visit. With their onsite cellar door and restaurant, a stage and big grassy area it’s a wonderful afternoon out.
Sunday, our final day in Hobart and of course we ended in style and the incredibly beautiful Frogmore Creek Winery. With a 3-course lunch and a wine tasting set amongst the vines in an exquisite building the ladies laughed and celebrated a wonderful weekend together.
Join Ladies Long Weekend on socials or visit our website for information on upcoming tours. By Tina.

Feature walls provide great opportunities to experiment with textures, shapes, colours, and patterns. Also known as accent walls, they offer a quick and easy way to liven up the space, and depending on what material you choose, they can be very low cost. Feature walls can be high impact, but they do not have to be. Sometimes a subtle pattern can inject just the right amount of interest into a room without overwhelming the space.
Whether you want a big change or a subtle upgrade, a feature wall could be just the thing you need. Here are some of the do's and don'ts to keep in mind.
The Do's of Feature Walls:
Complementary colours are great: Make sure that whatever colour or pattern you choose complements the rest of the room. Choosing a bright or bold colour can be great, but only if it fits in with the rest of the room. Bold just for the sake of bold is never a good idea.
Accentuate the space: Use an accent wall to define a living space. In an open concept home or in multiple-use spaces it can be tricky to define areas, but an accent wall can help. For instance, a feature wall to highlight the dining area in a combined living/dining space can help greatly.
Update with paint: Opt for paint when you want an easy and inexpensive way to update your space without making a big commitment. There is no limit to the patterns you can create with paint, and it is the easiest material to change should you decide you want to try something different.
The Don'ts of Feature Walls: Find your focal point: Do not randomly select a wall to highlight. The feature wall should be used to highlight the room's existing focal point. For instance, the wall where the mantel sits, or even where the TV is, makes for a good feature wall. The wall behind the headboard in a bed room is also ideal.
Help a small room: Refrain from putting an accent wall in a tiny room. It will only make it look smaller. If you want a bold colour or pattern in a small room, you are far better off covering all the walls. Go big or go home.
Do it in the right room: Don't opt for a feature wall because you are scared to commit an en tire room to a particular colour or pattern. While it is a great option if you think the colour or pattern will be too overwhelming for the entire room, you should not do it out of fear. A feature wall should be a highlight, not a consolation prize.
Steer clear of crowded rooms: Avoid putting a feature wall in an already overcrowded room. When there is too much going on in a space, it can be confusing to the eye and create a sense of chaos. A feature wall should be a highlight, so it needs room to breathe.

Sign placed with the Keith Schmidt CollectionIt is a well-known fact that the highest by-product of learning is participating and creating.
During the pandemic and now in the recent floods, schools and families have definitely had their fair share of challenges to overcome.
Keeping children engaged in learning, parents and teachers have had to come up with some pretty creative and innovative ideas. Having been a teacher and ‘once a mother always a mother’, and now also a two-time grandmother, I continue to admire and encourage all the moms, dads, grandparents, great grandparents, other family members, teachers, neighbors and friends out there doing it tough at home and at school. Our efforts for children are definitely and always worth it.
Certainly, when the learner is engaged, has a clear purpose, and can readily discuss their ideas, then one could say that learning is taking place.
Thankfully, with an adult in tow (skillfully guiding from a follower position), a child, following their
inquisitiveness, can learn almost anything and retain it for life. Those leading and inspiring a child on a learning journey have one amazing fact in their favor – children are innately intellectually adventurous and truly aspire to try, search, discover or find out.
One only needs to say to a child, “Don’t open that door!”, and you can be sure that they will.
Interestingly, one indicator that clearly shows learning has taken place is when the child actually creates something; this is often based on their experience and the understanding they have gained through seeing, hearing and most of all through doing.
Furthermore, it is worth considering another very relevant point – even though the tasks chosen by parents and teachers are extremely important, it is only when the child sees that they themselves are considered more important than the task, the lesson, or the journey, that worthwhile, purposeful and beneficial learning actually takes place.
It is amazingly true that within every child is enormous potential think deeply, reason soundly, and create joyfully. We do well to treat the child with this incredible fact in mind.
According to Budget Direct, in 2020, Logan was ranked in the top 10 local regions for road fatalities. This is an interesting statistic as this was the year when Queensland went into lockdown, and there were less cars on the road.
Since this time, Logan has become a residential hotspot. There was a development boom and the city has become much busier. As such it is anticipated that our roads will also become a hotspot for motor vehicle accidents.
Browns Plains Road in Browns Plains is already known as one of the most dangerous roads in Queensland according to AAMI Crash Index. Alongside the Pacific Highway, Logan Motorway, Chambers Flat Road, Kingston Road and Mt Lindesay Highway, which record high numbers of reported crashes.
Tiffany Halliday from Shine Lawyers is a Personal Injury Lawyer who grew up in Regents Park and knows these roads all too well.
Tiffany experienced a hit and run on Kingston Road a few years ago. It was early morning and unfortunately the vehicle which collided with the rear of her car was speeding. Turns out the driver was running late for work and following the collision failed to stop to exchange details.
“One of the most common causes of motor vehicle accidents is speeding. I was in shock when the other driver fled the scene however, was fortunate that I knew what steps to take in this situation. I took photographs, reported the incident to the police and sought medical care for my injuries.”
“It is important that we take care when driving, no matter the circumstances. Particularly when our roads are busier than ever with the influx of people who now call Logan city their home.”
SafeRoads4Logan is a partnership between Logan City Council, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Police Service, Queensland Health and RACQ. It has been designed to keep our roads, roadsides and road users safe. Its current goal is reduce accident rates in Logan by 10%.
“It is great to see our city booming and becoming a coveted area. So many now call Logan their home and as residents, we should band together to keep our roads and ultimately us safe. Accidents do happen and so we need to be vigilant on our roads. We need to remind ourselves that our road rules require drivers to drive with proper control of their vehicles and to drive as safely as possible.”

Considered by many to have been the Scenic Rim’s most popular arts event, BADCAP is proud to announce that, after a break of five years, ARTS IN THE OLIVES is back! It’s still in the Scenic Rim, one of the Lonely Planet’s top destinations in the world, but it’s just changed olives groves which takes it from south of Beaudesert to east of Kalbar.
2008 saw the first Arts in the Olives take place at Worendo Grove in the Lost World. BADCAP (Beaudesert and District Community Arts Project Assn. Inc) had a wild idea to host an International Sculpture Symposium in Beaudesert and extra funds were required. The event was so successful it ended up running for ten years.
As many people have missed Arts in the Olives so much, there has been a lot of pressure to recreate this special arts event and it is with much pleasure that BADCAP, in conjunction with the Olive View Estate, will bring you 2022 Arts in the Olives.
So much will be the same – arts workshops and demonstrations, artisan stalls, a day and night music program, free children’s workshops and Arts in the Olives’ very own art gallery, but some thing new will be the sustainability and lifestyle sessions.
Arts in the Olives is moving from one side of the Scenic Rim to the other. Olive View Estate at Kalgun is the 2022 venue. Olive View Estate is at 58 Kulgun Road, Kulgun which is a few kilometres from Kalbar on the western side of the Scenic Rim and only an hour from Brisbane.
The other major change will see the activities being held over two full days with entertainment being a highlight as the sun sets over the ranges on the Saturday night. The Scenic Rim Regional Council has also chosen Arts in the Olives to be the venue for its second Arts Dinner of the year which will feature inspirational talks by practi
tioners sharing their journeys and explaining how their art connects to community.
Another first for Arts in the Olives is that there will be an option to camp overnight – either BYO tent or rent-a-tent!
The ever-popular Food Trucks featuring international gourmet food, using as much locally-grown produce as possible, will be another reason not to miss this highly anticipated event.
With all the workshops to choose from, it’s guar anteed there is going to be something to appeal to everyone. Participating in a workshop in the mid dle of an olive grove in the Scenic Rim, one of the most picturesque spots in the world, surrounded by other creative people, will again be the year’s highlight for many.
Among the many workshops are blacksmithing, mask making, limestone sculpture, mosaics, felting, bamboo flute making, weaving, stitching, indigenous art, metalsmithing, eco-dyeing, pottery, jewellery and pizza making. To see the complete list go to www.badcap.org
And to all the mothers, who have been treated to an outing to the Lost World for Mothers’ Day in the past, they will be pleased to hear that Mothers’ Day weekend has been chosen again. The dates to diarise are Saturday 7 May and Sunday 8 May.
Brochures with the full exciting program are now available, and as workshops always fill quickly, it is recommended that everyone books online just as soon as they can. A discounted price for entrance tickets will also be available online with one or two day passes available. (Workshop participants do not pay an entrance fee.)
Brochures are now available at the Libraries, Cultural Centres, coffee shops, Visitor Information Centres or from Kalico Country in Brisbane Street Beaudesert. Details are also available online www.badcap.org
The Boonah Show Society is pleased to announce that plans are well underway to run the 121st Show. Show Schedules are now available, in print or online versions.
Don’t miss out on experiencing all the Boonah Show has to offer! With new features including “Showcasing Boonah” a new virtual reality experience that showcase Boonah’s producers, attractions and venues as well as hourly cooking demonstrations in the licenced McDougal Building or try the local beer, wine and produce in the Muller Building.
For families, there is the Interactive Area next to the Animal Nursery, designed with young chil dren in mind; where they can be “little farmers”, gather eggs, dig some potatoes, plant some seeds, shell some corn, make a scarecrow, and lots of other activities including the Scarecrow Trail. Be sure to pick up your free Scarecrow Trail Bag.
You can see all this, as well as all the traditional features of a good old fashioned country show including Sideshow Ally and loads of free enter tainment! Hearing that the rent might be going up is news no tenant wants to hear, nonethe less it’s a fact of life for many renters.
But how much can a landlord increase the rent by exactly? And when can they do it? Do tenants have a right to negotiate or complain? Here’s everything you need to know.
What’s a reasonable rent increase?
Unsure what reasonable rent is? the trick is to look at comparable properties and compare what they charge in rent. If your rent is considerably lower than the median rent then you may be in the position of being asked for more.
The overall rental market in a particular area –and where a property sits within it – is the “com parative market”. For example, if a suburb’s median rent has gone up by 5% on average and a property is well situated and in good condition, it’s logical for it to rise too.
Rent increases are generally influenced by supply and demand, comparative markets, and the availability of a substitute. When there is more demand than supply, landlords have more power when it comes to rent negotiations.
The availability – or not – of an exact compar ison also has a big influence; that is to what extent can a tenant find an equivalent, suitable
property? If there aren’t many options, again the landlord has more negotiation power.
Typically, in Queensland, over the past couple of years, if a property is going to see an increase, we would normally see an increase of between 2% and 10%,
How often can a landlord increase your rent by and how much notice is required?
How often a landlord can increase a tenant’s rent by and how much notice is required differs between states, but mostly speaking, it can’t be done during the tenancy, unless it’s by agree ment or the lease allows for it. If a landlord wants to increase the rent, it’s usually done at the end of a lease, before a new one is signed.
Can a landlord backdate a rent increase?
No, a rent increase cannot be backdated. That’s because in every state, the landlord has to provide notice of some kind.

With National Pets Day on the 11th of April, we come together to celebrate our pets. Although if you are a pet owner, you know there’s not a day that goes by that you don’t celebrate your animal companion!
On National Pets Day, it’s an opportunity to lavish their pets with the adoration and care they deserve (well, more than on any other day). Taking them out for a walk or a drive, buying their favourite treats, or getting them a new toy to play with from local pet stores like Comfy Critters in Loganlea or Little Wardy’s Pet and Aquarium in Slack Creek, are just some of the ways that pets are spoiled just a little extra on this day.
Treat your pet to an experience. You can’t go past Pooch Avenue in Slacks Creek, Queensland’s first luxury, 5-star Dog Grooming Salon, Day Spa, Day Care and Boutique or Puppercuts, a professional dog grooming salon
in Shailer Park. If doing it yourself is more your style, get all your grooming supplies from DGS Imports.
Are you looking for some time away? Brooke’s Inspired Pet Services has got you covered for everything from Pet Sitting, Mobile Grooming, Pet Photography and much more! If you are a bird owner, Brisbane Bird Minding in Rochedale South is the place to go. Catering for short- and long-term stays, personalised care and attention in a home away from home environment.

Ensure your pet is living its best life at the Daisy Hill Veterinary Clinic. A local family-owned and operated vet that has been in the area for over 30 years.
But the day is not all about them, why not gift yourself an everlasting memento of your beloved pet with an original hand-painted watercolour pet portrait or gift from Lucy & Coco Pet Portraits & Gifts.
So the question remains, how will you celebrate your pet this National Pets Day?

Achild’s early years are the foundation for their future development, providing a strong base for lifelong learning and learning abilities, including cognitive and social development. Babies are born ready to learn, with around 90 percent of brain development occurring in the first five years of life.
Vision and hearing pathways develop first, followed by early language skills and higher cognitive functions. A child's vocabulary often quadruples between ages two and four. These connections become more complex over time as children grow, and influence brain devel opment to create positive learning behaviours from an early age.
Research shows that children who participate in quality preschool programs are more likely to arrive at school equipped with social, cognitive, and emotional skills. Higher levels of education al success, employment and social skills have all been linked to moderate levels of participa tion in quality early childhood education. There are a large variety of early learning centres available to Logan parents.
Kaleidoscope Kids Early Learning Centres follows the Early Years Learning Framework to extend and enrich children’s learning from birth to five years and through to school. They combine routine and spontaneous activities to provide a varied and exciting curriculum for children.

It was anything but the ‘Sound of Silence’ at the Kingston Butter Factory when homegrown musical superstar, Dami Im took the stage at the first Easts & Beats of 2022.
The Daisy Hill raised songstress, who rose to international fame on the Eurovision song contest, was the headline performer in a block buster line-up on the KBF outdoor stage on the 18th March.
Initially meant to be on the 25th February, the event was initially postponed due to wet weather and the floods, the first Eats and Beats of the year went off with a bang! With tickets completely sold out, the crowd was buzzing with excitement.
Also on the star-studded entertainment line-up is local artist, Zeek Power, who has become a favourite of Eats & Beats regulars as well as The Pulse Chamber Orchestra, led by world-re nowned conductor and fellow City of Logan product, Dane Lam.
I was one of the many that attended the event along with 9 of my friends and family. It was excellent! When we arrived, we made our way towards the stage, loaded up with our chairs, table and picnic blankets. After finding the perfect locations, we set up camp before taking it in turns to explore the dozens of food trucks and stalls.
We started the night out with a hot chocolate and coffee from Devon Pixies before doing a lap by the many food trucks, trying to decide what to eat. With each truck we passed there seemed to be something new to take our fancy. So many delicious options to try, but not enough room in my stomach!
It was a fantastic experience that I would defi nitely do again! The sense of community com bined with the diversity of talent on display on the night and the variety of food on offer, came together to create something quite special. We had a fantastic time and I would recommend everyone experience it at least once.

We tend to idealize childhood as a carefree time, but youth alone offers no shield against the emotional hurts, challenges, and traumas many children face. Children can be asked to deal with problems ranging from adapting to a new classroom or online schooling to bullying by peers or even struggles at home. Add to that the uncertainties that are part of growing up in a complex world, and childhood can be anything but carefree. The ability to thrive despite these challenges arises from the skills of resilience.
The good news is that resilience skills can be learned.
We are all innately resilient, but fear, insecurity and doubt can take over in moments of stress or anxiety. These responses can affect our ability to draw on our resilience when we need it most. Luckily, there are a few ways parents and teachers can encourage and build resilience in children.
Focus on developing an environment where all children feel safe and supported. Encourage them to try new things, and emphasise the growth and learning opportunities they are presented with when they fail or make a mistake.
When children feel like the outcome won’t affect them negatively, they are more likely to try new and more challenging things in and out of the classroom. Being able to learn from mistakes and challenges in a place where they feel supported and encouraged will build their confidence, self-belief and resilience.
When it comes to building resilience, it is all about the journey and not just the destination! When we only celebrate the wins, we instil a belief that the only thing that matters is success. To build a positive mindset and a will ingness to grow, it’s important to focus on prog ress and not just success. This can be done by providing open feedback to children that focus on their effort rather than the outcome.
Encourage your children to set goals for them selves that provide challenges and stimulation; while celebrating every time they overcome a hurdle along the way and move closer to achieving their goal.
Provide opportunities for goal setting and reflection
Building resilience is all about maintaining a positive mindset, a willingness to grow and an ability to learn from setbacks. Setting goals and making time for reflection have been shown to help maintain focus and create momentum in times of growth and change. Breaking down situations, issues or even assessments into smaller, less intimidating chunks can make it easier for children to stay in a positive mindset so that they are less likely to be deterred by setbacks. Creating environments where children feel confident to discuss what they want to achieve and their strategies for doing it is important in helping them to build resilience.
All children are naturally creative and curious, and thrive when given the opportunity to cultivate their creativity. Here at Bethania Lutheran School, we nurture curiosity from the moment they walk through our doors until the day they graduate, providing them with the tools they need to wonder, question and design creative ideas.
Bethania Lutheran School is proud to have a solid, inclusive learning culture, where every child’s uniqueness is appreciated.
Student engagement is a major focus, with our teachers designing learning experiences to get our students excited, motivated and thinking creatively, capturing their interest as they meaningfully explore real world problems.
We have high standards for our students to achieve their personal best and to challenge
themselves to grow and progress both academically and emotionally.
BLS are developing self directed, creative thinkers, problem solvers and independent learners, encouraging our students to take risks in a safe environment.
‘An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail,’ Dr Edwikn Land.
The culture of a Learning Space, also has it’s hand in creating creative students, in creating the long-term memories for our students.
Agile and outdoor Learning Spaces allow for flexibility in the classroom layout to suit students preferred learning style. Students develop an awareness of their own learning style and are trusted to make choices about how they learn best.
The learning culture at BLS together with our flexible learning spaces, provide students the opportunity to think deeply, and creatively.

We have all seen the tragic pictures of flooding in our Beenleigh area. It was just awful watching as homes and community clubs sink under the weight of the Logan River. Some of the most badly affected were the local sporting clubs; with many of them tragically going under in the muddy floodwaters in the recent floods, especially in Beenleigh.
However, if there is one thing that Logan is ex cellent at, it is coming together, supporting each other and lending a hand when times are tough. On Saturday the 12th March, the community came together to help clean up and support a local sporting club, Beenleigh Multisports Asso
ciation. Beenleigh Multisports was one of the sporting clubs affected by the rising floodwa ters and bore the brunt of Mother Nature.
“We were surrounded by water. The only way we could get to the clubhouse was by kayak. We managed to move some stuff to a higher level, but there wasn’t a lot we could do,” recalled Mick Breene, Club Manager. “By the time the water stopped rising, it had reached the bottom level of the clubhouse. It is going to take several weeks before we get back to normal.”
The team at Logan City Guides along with a hoard of volunteers, arrived bright and early on Saturday then went to work removing the mud, waterlogged debris and equipment any way we could. Multiple catchers blasted the mud while rows of people with brooms, rakes and shovels worked to clear away the mud. While others scrubbed and disinfected what could be saved, like chairs, marquees and the kitchen equip ment. We were treated to delicious bacon and egg burgers and a sausage sizzle throughout
the day, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Beenleigh and Hunt Property Sisters.
“I felt very privileged that people generously gave their time and support and the opportu nity to have a chat at any time. It has certainly been more than we could have ever anticipat ed,” commented Mick.
“I wish we could thank everyone individually for the help that they have given since the floods. The clean up on Saturday was massive. We are so overwhelmed with the love and support we have received as a club,” thanked Mick.
“Thank you to everyone that gave up their Saturday to help us try to pick up after the floods. The floods impacted us majorly; however, don’t worry, we’re all just as eager to get back as you are!”

The worst flooding in the City of Logan in nearly 50 years will require some longterm repairs to several popular parks.
Local flooding exceeded 2017 levels caused by ex-TC Debbie but was slightly lower than flood heights in 1974.
The force of the water and huge debris load impacted playground equipment at various sites, moved a concrete half-pipe at Waterford West and pulled concreted bollards out of the
Parks still closed to facilitate essential clean-up work are:
• Tully Memorial, Beryl Parade, North Maclean
• Alexander Clarke, Dewar Drive, Loganholme
• Logan River Parklands, Pacific Highway service road, Beenleigh
Other parks significantly impacted but are partially re-opened as repair and cleanup works continue include: Riverdale Park
Some parks may be temporarily closed in coming weeks if repair works cannot be conducted safely without closing park gates to vehicular access.
In the cases where equipment needs replacing, it could take many weeks to get those items manufactured and delivered.
The overnight section of Tully Memorial Park also is closed as the access road is badly damaged. Repair works have commenced.
City of Logan Mayor Darren Power said residents should avoid entering parks where flood damage is still evident.
“We know how much our community enjoys our parks and green spaces, but safety and good health is even more important,” Cr Power said.
“We just ask everyone to be patient as we work through what needs to be repaired, replaced or cleaned.
“And if you are using a re-opened park, we urge parents and carers to have mosquito repellent and antiseptic wipes on hand as extra backups.”
Those who have booked events in a City of Logan park in coming weeks should contact Council on 3412 3412 to check on the park’s status.
Mountain bike trail networks were also impacted but most have now re-opened. These include all trails at:
• Neville Lawrie Reserve
• Cornubia Forest Park
• Underwood Park
• Kimberley Forest Park
• Gramzow Road Link Trail
• Spring Mountain Forest Park
Some trails remain closed by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service in Daisy Hill Conservation Park. For more information go to: Daisy Hill Conservation Park | Parks and forests

Something new is coming to Windaroo!
nap Fitness is opening an exciting new state of the art gym this April. But what distinguishes them from other gyms and fitness centres in the area besides being the new kid on the block, is that they focus on how exercise makes you feel rather than how it makes you look; because when you feel great the results will follow.
Run by manager Andrew, the new Snap Fitness Gym are on a mission to help people create positive lifestyle habits that make them feel fantastic.
“We're a friendly, encouraging team that's all about 'you can do this,' not 'you have to push harder'” explained Ben from Snap Fitness, “We'll help you start small, support every step and reward you along the way. Whether you've just completed a personal training session inside the gym or a leisurely walk outside, any fitness is valid fitness at Snap Windaroo.”
When are you expected to open? Were there any delays/complications?
At the moment we are pushing to be open by the end of April. We will be doing our best to fast track the open as soon as possible however we are in the hands of others with regards to the reconstruction of the shopping centre. As most people are aware, we were due to open midway through 2021, however, the fire that devastated Windaroo Village stopped those plans.
So, after experiencing a fire, flood and pandemic we think we have seen it all now! Strangely our journey so far kind of speaks to who we are as a business and how we will be reminding our members that a setback is just an opportunity for a comeback. In life, you have to pick yourself back up, dust yourself off and push forward.
My business partner and I looked into a lot of areas around South East Queensland and Windaroo just felt right. I previously lived in Mount Warren Park managing one of the neighbouring Snap Fitness clubs and enjoyed the wider community engagement. It feels like there is a genuine opportunity to provide a world-class health and fitness facility to not only Windaroo but the surrounding suburbs.
After the fire, we saw how the community pulled together and wanted to help those that needed it. The local "Village" connection is what it's all about for us and something we want to stay true to. Oh, and I love golf so Windaroo Lakes being up the road didn't hurt.
