irtuous’ seems to be the key word as we greet & welcome November 2022!
There has been much heated discussion stemming from our representative sportsman & woman calling out what is right and wrong with regards to environment, racism and whatever else, you name it!
Living in the city of Logan, indeed in Australia, means living in harmony! It means getting along with others, encouraging and forging ahead in creating balanced views by accepting others as they are. We all have opinions and sure we are entitled to voice what we believe in. Is it so difficult however, to make your views known in a more considered way, respecting our fellow citizens living and making this country great? How about the inconsistencies we so obviously displayed by a leader voice about ditching an energy company sponsorship, yet still use equipments made of processed materials most harmful to our environment?
Closer to home front in Logan City, reading the social media response by local restaurant owner to a caller who claimed; ‘pack your bags and go back to where you came from’ was truly plausible. His courage, confidence and sense of community was outstanding. We will certainly be supporting the restaurant by frequent visits!
Hope to see warmth as we head into warmer months. Supporting the local businesses in their endeavours, and supporting our neighbours by simply saying ‘Hello’ and ‘Thanks’ with that infectious big smile! Happy November Logan!
Prior to a Court House being built in Beenleigh, court business was conducted in Savage’s General Store. While a Court House was gazetted for Beenleigh in mid-1869, funding proved to be an obstacle to the extent that Mr. Savage offered to build a Court House at his own expense. His offer was rejected and it was not until May 1872 that Beenleigh finally obtained a dedicated building.
On 18 September 1872 the first agricultural show to be held in the Beenleigh district took place in the new Court House. Following is an extract from The Queenslander, Saturday 21 September, 1872, p.5:
The exhibition of produce, poultry, implements, &c., was held in the Court and adjoining yards; the cattle and horses in paddocks at the rear of Mr. Savage's stores. The ground floor of a handsome two-story building of hardwood, going up for Mr. Tansey, was set aside for
the banquet of the evening. The Court-house building was neatly decorated with evergreens, flowers, handsome photographic views of the district, lent by Messrs. Henderson and Hinchcliffe, flags, &c.; the whole presenting a very lively and characteristic effect, highly creditable to the officers of the society who had the matter in band.
The building served the community for 65 years during which time it was also used as a Polling Station for elections. Funding for a new building was approved in September 1936, but when it was completed in early 1937 locals were severely disappointed. It was about half the size of the original which had been sold to Mr. Peachey of Ormeau. In 1942 additions were made to both the Court House and the Police Station; then in 1984 the building was vacated and other accommodation used while major extensions were undertaken. An official opening of the vastly altered building was held on 30 March 1987. More significant changes were made in 1997.

Brigalow Country Community Club is unifying the Eagleby community through the power of music and volunteering.
The unifying power of music is regularly displayed at Eagleby’s Brigalow Country Community Club.
The Brigalow Country Community Club is a not-for-profit organisation, started by a group of musicians, singers and friends who used to play at various homes or in the park and came up with the idea of a proper social event. In approximately 1982, the club appointed its first President, Dave Debenham.
Today, the Brigalow Country Community Club is run by President, Max Noble and the Secretary/ Treasurer, Lynda Terry, along with a dedicated committee and group of volunteers.
Located at the Oliver Sports Club in Eagleby, this family-orientated club offers a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere where people can come to meet new and old friends, have a drink at the bar or a coffee and a bite to eat from our kitchen.
“
It is a bit like being in the country, in the middle of the city ”
“A piece of God's country. It is so peaceful”, commented Lynda,
The club hosts a continuous string of events for your singing, dancing and socialising pleasure for the community and their members. You can even hire the hall and use the stage/ full mixing desk/s and music equipment as well as the kitchen and bar facilities in your own function. Musicians are encouraged to bring their own guitars, etc.
“Following on from Covid restrictions, membership numbers are low. However, the members we do have are very sociable, friendly people who enjoy meeting new people and
creating a nice environment to socialize. We are hoping to increase our membership this year”, stated Lynda.
Currently, the Brigalow Country Community Club host regular Socials on the 1st Saturday of each month where the community is invited to dance, play music, sing and mingle the night away. Entry is $5 per person and children are free. Doors open at 6:00 pm and food is available from 6:30 pm.
Practice nights are held on Thursday evenings commencing at 6.30 pm and the cost is $5 to sing or play and $3 to just watch). Children are free to come along.
One of their most popular events are their Country Escape events. These special mornings are predominately for seniors and people with a disability (and their carers) to socialise, be entertained and connect with members of the community, however, all are welcome to attend.
Held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month, starting at 9:30 am until approximately 1:30 pm, for only $5 per person, people are invited to come along for a few hours of music, morning tea, lunch and free raffles with lots of prizes!
“We hold two functions per month called ‘Country Escape’, which is approximately 4 hours of entertainment with morning tea, raffles, and lunch all for the aged, retired and disabled within our community,” explained Lynda, “These days are a great success with up to 155 guests attending.
We also attend the Beenleigh Special School on various occasions to entertain them with our live band and singing.”
For catering purposes, various groups/buses are required to ring or email at least one week before the particular date you are wishing to attend. Contact Graham Remnant on 0410 198 315 or scraps49@hotmail.com.
If you would like to help and give back to your community, the Brigalow Country Community Club are looking for volunteers, musicians, singers and people to come along and be part of the audience as well as equipment donations.
Volunteering for just a couple of hours a week can boost your self-esteem and lower your chances of depression and of developing heart disease.
“We help our community in many ways, but to continue to do so, we need support. We always say 'it's your club, your community – help us to support the Community. New members are always welcome,” stated Lynda.
“We endeavour to help the underprivileged in our community by providing secondhand walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs and adjustable toilet chairs. As we are not financially supported by Government in any way, unfortunately, we rely on these items to be donated to us so that we are then able to clean, service and offer to the community at no extra cost.”
So, come along and experience our little friendly club with the warmest atmosphere. You can sing or learn to play an instrument and practice with the band.
To learn more about our upcoming events, would like to volunteer, hire facilities or learn more about the club, visit their website, www. brigalow-country.com or ring and speak to either Max on 0412 536 877 or Lynda on 0405 494 498.
ealth literacy is the term used to describe knowledge and understanding of information directly related to health care concerns. As Sir Francis Bacon famously quoted “knowledge itself is power”.
According to the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare, low health literacy rates are associated with lower engagement in health, high hospital
admission rates and a poorer understanding of medical self-care instructions (www.aihw.gov. au).
Meaning people will go longer before seeing a professional, will require more follow up visits and will in some cases have major medical concerns missed, which can lead to a shorter life expectancy and larger bills associated with care.
In the world of podiatry, people will often see their GP and be told they need to see a podiatrist to look at their feet because they are diabetic. However, the understanding of how diabetes affects the feet is not often explained, says Senior Podiatrist Matthew Christie.
When we assess people with diabetes, we advise we are going to check the feeling in your feet, we are going to assess your circulation and we are going to look for foot deformity that may cause you a diabetic foot concern. More importantly, if we identify any of these concerns, we will give you a score (0-2) that will predict the risk of developing a diabetic foot ulcer and predict your amputation risk over the next three years.
More importantly, educating people on the simple things you can do to prevent diabetic foot ulcers and amputations significantly reduces hospital admissions from diabetes.
Studies have found that wearing suitable enclosed shoes reduces diabetic foot ulcer risk compared to barefoot walking (Rural Remote Health, 2007) and that time spent bare foot walking predicts diabetic foot ulcer depth which in turn increases the risk of amputation from a diabetic foot ulcer (diabetesonthenet.com).
By asking your podiatrist to educate you on your lower limb health care complaint, be it a diabetic foot check, plantar heel pain or achilles pain you will improve your health care literacy. Improving your health care literacy will mean you will have less health care consultations; you will spend less money on your care, and you will increase your wellbeing (journals. pu.edu). This in turn is associated with a longer happier life (jamanetwork.com)
For appointments related to diabetic foot checks, foot pain, heel pain, exercise injuries or running assessments please call 1300 786 464 or book online at movingforwardpodiatry.com.au
Understanding this information makes people more engaged in their diabetic foot podiatry care.

Tanghulu is a popular candied fruit snack popular throughout northern China. This Chinese street food is different from a traditional candied fruit. Instead of a soft candied fruit, the hardened sugar syrup creates a hard crunchy shell around the fruit.
15 assorted small fresh fruits
(strawberries, cherries, grapes, kiwi)
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup water
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
5 wooden skewers
Method
Divide fruit among wooden skewers, 3 pieces each, arranging fruits to cover end of skewer and ensuring fruits are touching.
3Stir together sugar, water, and corn syrup in a small shallow saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, undisturbed. Reduce heat to medium-low, cook, undisturbed, until a candy thermometer registers 150 degrees C, 18 to 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, prepare an ice bath. You won’t have time once the fruit has been covered in hot sugar syrup. Prep the ice water early so you can dip them in quickly.
Remove pan from heat, let stand until bubbles subside, 1 to 2 minutes. Carefully tilt pan so sugar mixture pools to one side. Working quickly, place fruit end of one skewer in sugar mixture, rotating to fully coat; allow excess syrup to drip back into pan. Place dipped skewer, fruit side down, in ice bath, allowing to cool fully, about 1 minute. Place, fruit side up, in a heavy cup or saucepan. Repeat with remaining skewers and sugar mixture, working quickly.
Agood restaurant sets a high standard for its food quality and ensures that guests receive the same quality with every meal. Serving quality food can earn the restaurant a good reputation and compel guests to return for repeat visits. High-quality ingredients and an experienced kitchen staff are important to serving good food consistently. A good cook understands their guests' needs and works well with the kitchen staff to ensure that guests receive their meal the way they ordered it every time.
One of the key characteristics of a suc cessful restaurant is a positive customer experience. The staff who interact with their guests should be courteous and maintain a positive attitude. Servers should know the menu well, deliver guests’ food and drinks on time, and quickly address any issues that an unsatisfied guest may have. Preferably with that ‘Smile! And if you hav
en’t been smiling, make sure to check your online reviews on a regular basis to learn what customers think of the experience they received at your restaurant.
A good restaurant should have one or more unique features that stand out in a customer’s mind and give it a competitive advantage over others. Unique selling differential, or unique selling proposition.
For example, your restaurant may be the only restaurant in town that makes its ingre dients fresh daily or it may have an amazing

view that none of the competitors have. It might be an affordable restaurant that offers coupons, discounts and kids-eat-free, or it might be a high-end, fine-dining eatery that has a themed night?
The food, decor and staff are just some of the features of a restaurant. Your eatery should be built around something solid. Funny restaurant names, for example, might be cute for the first few months, but often get old after a while. Think about your restaurant description. If you can't describe your restaurant in a sentence, you might not have a strong identity.

Windaroo was the second sugar lease taken out in the Albert River region by J S Pinwell. It was later run by William Warren, who also had Noyea plantation, now known as Mount Warren Park. The Heck family, who own the Rocky Point sugar mill, took up the estate in the 1894 and continued to grow sugar along the flats while grazing cattle on the slopes.
Until the late 1970s, the area remained essentially rural before a rural residential estate, Windaroo Acres, was subdivided. Land was first released for sale in 1983, in lots ranging from 4,054 to 8,071 square metres. Businesses began opening in the 1980s, with the Windaroo Golf Club opening in 1981.
After purchasing it in 1974, the Windaroo Cottage was renovated by Jim and Ann Hart. It had been relocated to the site from the Beenleigh Rum Distillery some years earlier and had been home to a widow with seven children. The Harts’ established a gallery in the cottage and in 2003, it was again renovated by a new owner, Wendy Child. At that time, it was a function venue.
In 1989, the country club opened an a la carte restaurant and in 1990, the Heck family offered part of the estate for sale, including the golf course. It was purchased by developer Chris Kerwick of Chima Pty Ltd. The golf club was further upgraded for the 1993 Queensland Open Golf Championship. In 1995, Villa World
purchased the last vacant land on the estate to develop a range of house and land packages. The Windaroo Shopping Village opened in April 1996.
In January 1992, the Windaroo State School opened and in 1993, approval was given for the construction of a state high school, to be known as Bahr's Scrub State High (the official suburb name at the time). When it opened in 1994, it was known as Windaroo Valley State High School. The school continued to expand and in 1996, a performing arts centre was opened. Plans were then put in place to develop a visual arts building, music building and a gymnasium.
In 2002, the country club was sold to Albert Valley Properties to develop a gated communi ty, which included townhouses.
Windaroo, along with adjoining Bannockburn, is among the highest-income area in the Beenleigh region and is home to 8,939 people (according to the 2016 Census).
Here is one local businesses that make up the Windaroo community.

In recent months, millions of Australians have had a bad run with their personal data. Whether it’s telecommunications companies like Optus, private health insurers like Medibank, massive online retailers like MyDeal, or smaller online wine sellers like Vinomofo — hackers are getting hold of our data regularly.
With all these data breaches happening to major corporations, just how safe are we and our personal data online and is there anything we can do to protect ourselves?
We asked the local community and here are some of the responses we got.
Unless you proactively protect yourself, you have virtually no privacy on the internet. To stay safe online you need to use a good Virtual Private Network (VPN) and have a good virus protection program are just some of the steps you can take to protect yourself online.
Yes. A lot of people do especially on social media. It’ll surprise you just how much information one can get about a person in a matter of minutes. This is why one has to be very careful with the kind of information they put out there. Don’t share what you don’t want people to see or know.
The internet is a very interesting place and safe enough once you understand the rules. Most people will interact with only a few websites and services over their entire lifetime. But the deeper you go, the less policed the internet becomes, and consequently, the more dangerous. There is always someone who will prey on you if you give them the chance, no matter where you are on the internet. Even fairly innocuous social media services have an underbelly of predators and scammers.
Excellent question. Nothing is for sure. But you can take steps to decrease your exposure online. Only deal with vendors on the web you know have excellent security. Be very careful when receiving emails that appear to come from a legit source asking for your login credentials. Only give the information necessary to obtain the services you wish to purchase. Unfortunately, as news stories show us daily, there is no such thing as ironclad security.
Here’s the thing… people, especially kids aren’t safe online, ever! In today’s day and age, any child on an open browser is a few clicks away from seeing something that would cause any parent to have a panic attack. Are there ways to help prevent this? Yes. but never say never.
Online platforms are too unsafe, as you might think. The activities behind the screen will be completely hidden, so we can’t guess how will be the person behind the screen. The virtual world is not like the real world. You have to be careful when you have any virtual conversations.
Of course, we are safe, but it depends on you where you are online. If you are online by creating a private account and have set your security and confidentiality, no one is able to harm you. :)

For over five years MultiLink Community Service in Logan Central has been successful in running Qld Government funded employment projects ‘Skilling Queenslanders for Work’ with the local community. One such project is the Certificate II in Supply Chain Operations which helps participants gain skills used in warehousing and industrial type roles.
Here is another great story from the program.
Kham Thang and his family are originally from Myanmar. As refugees they moved to India and then migrated to Australia in 2019.
Kham completed Year 10 at Woodridge High School however he found going any further was difficult because of his language barrier. Kham then heard about
MultiLinks Cert. II Supply Chain course through a friend and made contact with MultiLink. After the meeting, Kham decided he would give the training a go, and what an excellent decision that turned out to be! Kham said he found the course gave him a boost of confidence as his English had improved throughout the program and he was able to gain his Forklift Licence, Dangerous Goods and First Aid Certificate.
Through the support of MultiLink, Kham was then able to secure an interview with a local hose-fitting company ‘Aquaknect’ (based in Meadowbrook) and successfully landed a fulltime role! This is Kham’s first job in Australia. Kham’s goals now are to keep improving his English and working and saving to buy a truck and run his own business.
Kham also mentioned, in his culture it is a great honour to be working and earning money that supports himself and his family. Aquaknect are really happy with his work ethic and performance and have now taken on several more participants from this program.
Kham, you should be a proud young man.

Kingscliff is home to a variety of upmarket boutique clothes, surf and sports shops and a great range of cafes and restaurants.
One shop you can miss out on visiting is Meraki Blu Boutique & Homewares. Located in the Peppers Salt Resort & Spa, on Bells Blvd, Meraki Blu opened in August 2019.
“In 2019, we opened our doors. After many years of dreaming about what my boutique would look like, but never really thinking it would come to fruition. I guessed I lacked the confidence to take the next step. Not having been in retail previously, I wasn’t sure where to start,” stated Cheryle, owner of Meraki Blu.
“My background was in finance and for 32 years I had the pleasure of helping people make the most important decisions with their finances – purchasing homes, vehicles and businesses. This gave me one certainty in opening this retail business – I knew I could balance the till every day!”
The name Meraki (pronounced “may-rah-kee”), is a Greek word that is used to describe doing something with soul, creativity or love – when you put “something of yourself” into what you are doing and that is exactly what Cheryle has been doing since opening her store. Jumping in head first, learning all things fashion and retail.
“As scary as it was, it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life to date. Who knew I had this little creative side to me to build a beautiful space that I would come every day and welcome others to enjoy,” explained Cheryle.
Each item in the store is selected by Cheryle. Alongside her team, Cheryle merchandises the store, carefully hand picking each itemcurating beautiful fashion, accessories and homewares for you to create a life with love, passion and soul.
“I am constantly complimented on how lovely the shop is, what gorgeous homewares and the ladies love the fashion labels we stock. I love offering suggestions on how to achieve a particular look whether it be what you wear or adding that something special to a place in your home,” stated Cheryle.
“I pride myself in the personalised service that you will receive as soon as you walk in our door. We are friendly and enjoy meeting and learning about our customers – let's just say we love a “chat”! We invite you to entice your senses with our gorgeous store and hope you fall in love with it as much as we have.”
