In the 'Area' column the letters 'A', 'R' and 'P' refer to Acres, Roods and Perches, the imperial land measures used in Australia prior to the introduction of metric. Only the first 10 Lots are shown, each for an area of one acre. The price per acre was £8.
Following is the conversion of Acres, Roods and Perches to square meters:
One Acre =4046.8 sqm; One Rood =1011.7 sqm; One Perch =25.3 square metres
By Dr. Graeme Nicholson. The original location for the town of Beenleigh was surveyed by William Fryar in 1866 and the first town blocks were offered for sale on Friday 2 November of that year. This original surveyed area is indicated in the map below by the vertical arrow.
On 1 October 1869, thirty local dignitaries, including Messrs Davy and Gooding, petitioned the Minister for Lands to move the town to a new site. On 13 January 1870, the government approved the new site and reserved land for the new town of Beenleigh. This area is indicated on the map on the right by the horizontal arrow.
Shown below is an extract of an entry from the Queensland Government Gazette advertising the first sale of land at Beenleigh. This is from Vol XII, No. 117 of the Gazette published on Monday 1 October 1866 for a sale to take place on Friday 2 November, 1866. The land advertised was at the original site on the north bank of the Albert River.
The price per acre is given in Pounds, one Pound converted to two Dollars when we converted to metric measurements.
Alot has happened since our May issue and what better time to give you an update on the tale of the travelling plate than right now.
Originally launched by Logan City Guides as a community initiative aimed at bringing people together and strengthening the Logan community, the Plate has taken on a life of its own. Consistently been passed from business to business around the Logan area, since it started its journey with Arwen from Devon Pixies. The plate has been passed on a total of 9 times so far!
Since last trade, the plate was passed from Rowena to Kailie and her team at Dye Hard Hair, along with 2 custom stubby holders.
From there the plate was shared by Kailie with the lovely ladies at the Kingston Post Office with 2 bottles of hair care product.
The plate continued on its journey when it was passed on from the Kingston Post Office to Amanda from TRS Safe Detox Australia with a pack of UNO cards and a crystal necklace. Amanda is a local business owner and is an independent distributor of Coseva's Advanced TRS in Australia; a product that helps to remove toxins from your body.
From then, Amanda shared the plate with Deborah and her crew at Muse – Crystals & Mystical Gifts, with 2 IONEX products. Deborah is currently in the process of setting up a Bathhouse and Day Spa Retreat.
Stay tuned for the next destination for the ‘Where is the Plate?’. We also encourage readers to check out the hashtag #whereistheplatelcg and like or follow the participating businesses or give them a visit if you haven’t yet.

Do you know a woman that deserves recognition for their work with the community?
The Soroptimist Club in Beenleigh is currently searching for nominations of women who are quiet achievers in the Logan community, for the annual Stella Rickoff award.
The award is inspired by Stella Rickoff who was one of the original members of the club in 1988 and spent much of her life working to support people in the local community. Stella was a Soroptimist, a kind and generous person, who gave freely of herself to help her community in times of need. We are looking for someone who emulates her work in the community.
The Soroptimist Club in Beenleigh hopes to not only lift women that are lifting others but also to recognise the many community services that are supporting the women of Logan that people may not be aware of.
Nominations are now open for members of the Logan, Beenleigh and district communities to nominate an individual who they feel would
be worthy of this award. The nomination form can be found at https://forms.gle/ szFhQ5EWcJ6hDM6X8.
Finalists will be selected by a panel of members from SI Beenleigh, and then members of the Rickoff family will select the winner.
The winner will be announced at the Stella Rickoff Awards dinner, to be held at Club Beenleigh on Saturday, July 23rd, 2022. They will receive a badge, certificate and a cheque to the value of $500 made out to the charity of their choice.
Applicants need to be over 18 years of age and must accept the nomination. Nominations close on the 15th of July 2022 at 5 pm.

t takes a community to grow a community and I believe that Beenleigh is like no other”, Sergeant Mark Haestier, PCYC Beenleigh.
Making a difference in the lives of people, particularly youth, is one of the most rewarding things you can do. This is something that Sergeant Mark Haestier, the Youth Club Manager for PCYC Beenleigh knows all too well.
In his role at PCYC Beenleigh and as a police officer, Mark has seen first-hand the impact that early intervention, positive support, guidance and mentoring can have on young people.
Discover how his time in the police force has helped him make a difference in people’s lives and helped him to lead others to do
Tell us about yourself & how you got involved with PCYC Beenleigh?
My name is Mark Haestier. I am 53 years young and have been married to my wife, Natalie for 24 years. We have 2 children, aged 19 and 21. I've been a serving Police Officer for 34 years; 19 years with the Metropolitan Police Force 'London' and 15 years with the Queensland Police Service.
In 2008, after an interaction with a 13-yearold at the Beenleigh Courthouse, I felt helpless that I couldn’t assist that young person. That same week, I attended PCYC Beenleigh to join the Gym. I saw 2 police officers working there and enquired what their roles entailed.
After speaking with them, I was asked to assist with a program that was seeking to identify and address perceptions of the police through the eyes of youth. In the program, I was positioned behind a screen and youth would enter individually. I'd ask a series of questions and the answers were recorded.
The 3rd young person was the same youth I had interacted with at the Courthouse and instantly recognised my voice. From that moment, I knew I had a connection and was able to ‘make a difference’. Soon after, I had the opportunity to relieve at PCYC Beenleigh and eventually applied for a vacant position which I was successful and some 14 years later am still here.
Describe a day in the life at PCYC Beenleigh.
Every day is different however the intention of each day remains the same. We intend to provide a facility that is socially inclusive irrelevant of age, ability or disability and to provide a multitude of opportunities for the community; youth in particular. Ensuring that the facility is well maintained and full of highquality equipment.
My role is to ensure that our community engagement, youth development and crime prevention programs are delivered effectively and to the people that are in most need of assistance, support and guidance.
Senior Constable Bob Caunt and I develop, facilitate and evaluate numerous programs and take great pride in working with the youth of the community; whether that be within a school environment or here at the Club.
We are always thinking, observing local trends and obtaining information from various sources within the community to keep up to date with the locally based needs; so that we can target, assist and deliver appropriate programs that will alleviate some of the issues. We also conduct Individual Interventions and work closely with young people in a variety of ways; including teaching verbal communication and problem solving, working through the perceived issues and collaboratively finding achievable solutions for the youth or we refer them to relatable programs that they can engage in.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I firmly believe in a positive work culture. The culture enables staff to feel connected, supported and feel a sense of pride within their workplace. I believe I am a supportive listener who encourages staff to exit their comfort zone to take on additional challenges. Proudly watching as they exceed their expectations.
What drew you to the police force and how did you discover it was the career for you?
It was a career that I'd always had an interest in. I joined the Met Police when I was 19 years old and quickly learned about 'real life'. London is a very big and busy city. It provided me with the most amazing challenges, experiences and memories to last a lifetime.
I spent 12 years as a General Duties officer covering North London and my last 7 years in the MET Police within the Territorial Support Group (TSG). A specialist unit that was responsible for policing critical incidents across the city inclusive of terror related incidents, large demonstrations, football hooliganism, organised crime, scene preservation, rapid entries and riot situations.
What career moments or achievements are you most proud of?
I am proud to have served for such a duration of time and to have worked closely with so many incredible officers in both countries.
Whilst at PCYC Beenleigh, I am incredibly proud of the achievements that the Club and community have achieved together. In particular, developing and facilitating several programs tailored to assist refugees, asylum seekers and foreign nationals, people with a disability or impairment and ladies that have, are or are likely to be affected by domestic and family violence.
To have been involved in so many amazing locally organised fundraising initiatives that have enabled programs, buildings and equipment to be purchased, thus enhancing the opportunities and delivery of PCYC Beenleigh.
Tell us about a time when have you made a difference in a young person's life.
In the 14 years that I have been at PCYC Beenleigh, I believe that the staff, volunteers and community have made positive differences in the lives of thousands of young people.
However, we couldn’t do it alone. Without the genuine support from the community, we wouldn’t have been able to make the difference we have – from monetary donations to local businesses providing opportunities for work experience, traineeships and apprenticeships.
To have had positive connections with so many local schools and service providers that have provided many referrals of families and young people that we then could work closely with. Our youth programs are deliberately designed to commence within the state school to create trust, respect and a positive opinion of the police. The programming with high schools is tailored to identify and recognise the dangers within society but also to instil self-belief and confidence within the youth. Finally, our education, training and employment programs assist with obtaining driving licences, employment or returning to the education system.
Tell us about the current (youth) programs you have in place to help young people succeed.
Braking the Cycle is a program that assists youth to attain their 100 driving hours. Get Set
For Work (GSFW) assists 16-19 years old's designed education, training and employment program over 10 weeks. Providing them with interview techniques, resume writing, team and individual activities, work experience and industry visits. Boxing After Dark is a program delivered every Friday evening to young people 13 – 19 years to keep active and off of the streets; away from engaging in criminal activity.
What is your favourite thing about Beenleigh?
Beenleigh although it has grown exponentially, still has a country town feel to it. It is an extremely supportive community whereby businesses and individuals are always willing to assist others in their times of need. I feel very fortunate to have been involved in so many events over the years.

Murray has received 17 ARIA nominations and has had three albums reach No.1 on the ARIA charts.
He encouraged his local fans to join him at the KBF Cultural Precinct for a great night of Australian music.
“The Kingston Butter Factory looks like an amazing place to play a show,” Murray said.

PCYC Beenleigh is helping young Queenslanders to prepare for a job and career through their successful ‘Get Set for Work’ program.
Get Set for Work aims to provide disengaged young people aged 15-19 years with nationally recognised training, combined with integrated learning support measures and foundation skills that will enable them to successfully transition to employment and/or further education and training.
The 10-week program is fully funded and runs 5 days a week. The delivery is very interactive
and well suited for restless young people who are not engaged in education or employment.
Most days are spent out and about visiting different industries to give young people a taste of what they might enjoy. Once a young person has chosen a direction, the remaining weeks of the program are about creating some motivation, narrowing in on that choice and taking the steps towards making this a reality. The program includes:
• Life skills activities such as cooking, gym sessions, workshops on mental health, respectful relationship awareness, alcohol & drugs, tax, budgeting & interviews. As well as regular volunteering to fill resume gaps, resume & cover letter services and personalized work experience placements.
• Grade 10 equivalence via a Certificate II in Vocational studies. This certificate is built around learning workplace expectations and behaviors and thus is still beneficial for those who have already completed grade 10.
• Financial and practical support to obtaining drivers licenses, driving lessons and safe driving behaviors.
• Inclusion of relevant professional development courses such as first aid training, RSA certificates, Blue Cards, White cards etc. if their chosen career pathway requires them.
• Exposure to employment industries through interactive excursions.
If you have anybody who you think this would benefit, please let us know and as we would love to meet them. We run this program 4 times a year, the next intake begins again on the 11th of July.

LOGAN SUPPORTS SAFE HAVEN COMMUNITY
By Emily StackNhung and I were first introduced to Jaeneen, Executive Director of Safe Haven Community and Tania, the Queensland Regional Manager of White Lady Funerals through the Logan City Women in Business (LCWIB) meeting over a year ago.
When we were first introduced, we weren’t aware of the intricacies surrounding coercive control and domestic abuse that women (and men) have experienced and how Safe Haven Community works to prevent it and the support they provide.
So, when they announced they were launching the World’s Biggest Dinner Party on the 14th of May, we knew we wanted to get involved. You may also recognise Jaeneen and Tania on our cover of the April issue.
To show our support, we, Logan City Guides, hosted (along with many others!) a special dinner party at Monte's Ale House intending to
raise $5,000 to donate to this worthy cause.
We invited local businesses, councillors and members of the local community to come along to attend on the night.
The response was phenomenal! We were overwhelmed by the generosity of the Logan community. Over 70 people joined us on the night, taking part in the raffle and auction; while some of those who weren’t able to attend, donated auction items and funds to this worthy cause.
Throughout the night, guests listened to several speakers as they enjoyed their meal.
Speakers included Jaeneen, Tania, author Anne M. Davy and Vicki Delport, who spoke about her experience working with Safe Haven Community.
To get the crowd involved, guests from each of the tables were invited to have a go at being the auctioneer; taking turns to auction each of the donated items. What followed was lots of laughter and fun, as people got into the spirit.
Thanks to everyone, we were able to raise over $7,000 for Safe Haven Community!
