02 Site Phenomenology

Sentul is the home and workplace of thousands of railway workers once upon a time. Central Railway Workshops, also known as Sentul Work is a 110-year-old colonial masterpiece and formerly a British railway headquarters, once housed the railway offices. Sentul Work is the indispensable parts of the history which can reveal the historical mysterious and witness the development of history. Besides, Sentul Work reflects British unique culture, Sentul history and community that lasting decades or centuries. It gives me overall experience of the past and reminds me the beauty and resilience of the past in the building. I can feel the place is very dignified and I can feel the sound of train passed by in the past and imagine there are many workers worked at there.

When I first saw Sentul Work, I think it is a clone of Kellie's Castle in Perak. Sentul Work is a rich historical heritage. It is something of value to someone back then are now considered junk to us. I hope it can turn into something of value. The entire building is built in English bond masonry with mortar floor. It strives the elements of simplicity, symmetry, and solidity. It has exposed brick, large windows beaming in natural light and concrete beams that hark back to its industrial past. On top of that, it looks quite quaint and dramatic too. Sets in a pristine and lush, sprawling private park in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. However, for my first sight, the atmosphere of Sentul Work is dark, hulking, scary, creepy, lonely and conventual. It seems like a maze in a huge and hidden abandoned castle surrounded with lushes, rusted metal scraps and breathe-taking landscape.

To study the symphony of artistic presentation and interactive displays and a matrix of glowing red LED lines that captures the radiating light installation surrounding the elevated seats fully expresses the heat, passion and excitement on the stage.

To study using aluminium tubing and polyester fabric constructed walls provided a cost effective alternative while creating a high-impact, and highly dramatic design and the fabric that have the ability to reflect the space’s LED lighting system.

Therefore, I wish to derive from the site phenomenology to give a new life to Sentul Works. There are three programmes being carried out which are Royal Selangor pewter activities, maze museums and casual theatre cafe. They will interacted at certain time. Using ETFE foil to create a contrast material with the existing building and neon color to highlight the dignified and adventurous atmosphere in the maze museums and express the heat which is a contrast of pewter room temperature as well as the passion on the performing stage.

The first impression for me towards Sentul Work is a hidden castle in a hustle and bustle city with dignified feeling. However, it must be have some exciting inside it. Many arches form depth might be giving some hints to unlock some challenges like a maze.

The centrecourt has glass ceiling so that sunlight can penetrate in to reflect the exiting colors at here. On top of that, there are emergency exits from both maze museums, these enables visitors to escape from urgency or fire, and have a peep what is going on.

The maze museum with ETFE foil wall enables transparency within layers by layers. Metal poles are supporting the ETFE foil and display the histories board. The neon light on the floor and green color arches will give the hints to go to the next stages to unlock the knowledge. Train hologram with train sound is displaying on the ceiling to let the people experience the past Sentul Works scene.
