Facing the global climate emergency and housing crisis, STNE-O is a platform that uses AI-Driven automated design and fabrication technologies to re-introduce stone construction for mass housing. Our design methods allow us to compile a wide range of housing typologies directly from raw stone material, minimising the need for craft and customisation.

A configuration software allows communities of future inhabitants to negotiate their preferred mode of living and space usage. An ML-trained virtual bot then interprets these programmatic schemes and organises raw materials from a crowd-sourced stone database into fully functional housing blocks. Using posttensioning as a structural system, new types of stone buildings are enabled, which provide an open-ended, natural and adaptive way of inhabiting our cities.

STNE-O consists of three main parts: 1. STONE DATABASE created by collecting 3d scanned raw stones 2. An ML-TRAINED virtual bot interprets typologies and organizes raw materials from a crowd-sourced stone database into fully functional housing blocks 3. Fabrication technology using POST-TENSIONING with robotic fabrication for connection Our platform attempts to make stone construction accessible for housing again.

Structural Analysis with kramaba and use udp port to connect unity playground, and automated align stones to the normals of compression forces in unity.

Computation Strategies Workflow

The aggregation of stones source from the stone library we built up. These selected stones are saved in json file for fast running and with certain algorithm done in unity to figure out the optimized aggregation within minimum customization.

We use computation strategies in categorize library and spatial configuration by stone aggregation within truss lines and a ML-trained virtual bot organizes raw materials from stone database into fully functional housing blocks.

Points position on ground floor are where the base stones start to grow, supporting the upper floor slabs, and forming room spaces. With the touching point on next level, steps executed in a for loop to find the end point.

TYPOLOGY FROM PATTERNS Within the basic patterns we compile housing typologies to form living spaces.

As cities are facing challenges such as rapid urbanisation, ageing population, and the unpredictable rise in housing prices and carbon footprint. We aim to create a fully automated sourcing and stone-cutting system to replace the existing high-rise construction method, and reduce carbon emissions in the most sustainable way.

Starting with the ‘Apartment Building On Forsterstrasse’ designed by Christian Kerez in 2003 and ‘Silodam’ designed by MVRDV, we have been asking the question - “could the principles that underpin in these house be subverted by the ‘discrete’ to expand the house into an apartment building offering flexibility, adaptability and the potential for co-living.” With this idea, we have been investigating whether ‘discrete’ elements could be used as the ‘Wall’, to define both individual and shared apartment spaces suitable for a variety of household types.

TEA-SCAPE PRATT INSTITUTE INTERIOR DESIGN YEAR: SPRING 2018

The tea-scape project addresses natural light as a program defining element. Contingency is defined as uncertain, close connection or affinity of nature.

However the space can be manipulated to compliment the light. Urban environmental stress is the situation that represents the level of anxiety of people especially living in the city like New York. A teahouse and ceramics gallery provides a contemporary setting in the heart of Central Park to test notions of natural light manipulating spatial rituals and human choreography.

THE CERAMIC TEA CUP This project addresses the idea that contingency as an uncertain natural element that can be manipulated by humans to affect the activity of people in the space. These diagrams are analysis by vessels that made by traditional ceramic wheel, in order to explore the contingency in the ritual of “tea ceremony”.

Using paper coffee cups to developed a personal area for people to write message and leave a trace of themselves that would be passed on to others. The space provides a specific atmosphere that seeks to amplify users' ideas, transforming those of abstract to tangible texts that will remain in this special time and place. LOOKNOW POP-UP STORE COMPANY: PROJJECT DESIGN YEAR: 2020.09 - 2021.09 LOCATION: MIXC CITY, SHENZHEN, GUANGDONG TEAM MEMBERS: QING WANG, COCO ZHANG, JIEYU XIE The spirit of youth and diversity of the ‘LOOKNOW’ brand leads to the creation of a series of mobile and mix-and-match props that can be combined as wishes. These display stands are loosely placed which allows for free movement of customers.

The props can be adjusted for the rapidly changing selection of clothing and accessories. When placed in different combinations and positions, the new display can create fresh shopping experiences with novelty each time that attract customers to return to the shop repeatedly.
