S

ummer (gold medal winning Olympic sailor ) and her team of women sailors (who were selected from all over China) went racing in Sanya. The team participated in the Sinan Cup. They represented the Sanya Yalong Yacht Club and did so with distinction. The ladies raced on a 48 feet Far Nova yacht against men’s teams who have just finished the Hainan round island regatta amongst other professional regattas in the Asian circuit. For some of the women it was their first time on a keel boat and for others it was their first time on a boat. Under the skilful helm of Summer and the watchful eye of Enrico (their Italian Master Coach) the girls put in a creditable series.

The team had some time to train prior to the regatta and were racing against some seasoned competitors in vessels up to 60 feet long. The weather was hot and the wind was up. Most days the wind kicked in at about 15 to 20 knots. In the first series

of races the wind never got under 20 knots and made its way up to 25 knots. Perfect for the girls as it gave them an even playing field. With a reefed main and some strong gusts they sailed tactical races to get two third places and a podium finish. In the next series of races the wind dropped and so did their expectations. With 15 to 18 knots it was imperative to run a spinnaker. The skilled helm of Summer meant the team sailed a fast and impressive series. It promises to be a dynamic and skilled group of women sailors who will be pushing the men’s teams as they made their way around some of the more presitgous events in China and hopefully other international events .

The next generation:

Clipper 13-14 Round the World Yacht Race

T

he elite group of 12 professional skippers who will lead 650 amateur sailors on the world’s longest ocean race has been revealed. The twelve skippers for the ninth edition of the famous biennial Clipper Round the World Yacht Race include a mix of youth and experience, international challengers and home grown talent as well as some familiar faces and only the third ever female to skipper the race. The group, who went through a rigorous selection process over months, were selected from hundreds of candidates to take on the challenge of leading twelve amateur crews on the adventure of a lifetime. They will also be the first to race on the new fleet of Clipper 70 yachts.

Vicky Ellis, 30, from Bristol, will be the only female skipper on the race and, having worked with Clipper Race crew as a training skipper for over three years,

is now looking forward to the challenge of working with her own race crew.

“Clipper Race crew all have a spark about them that makes them different to the rest of the world,” said Ellis. “It makes them stick their neck out and pursue this wild dream when the rest wouldn’t dare. That’s what I love about the Clipper Race and I am really excited about getting my race crew.”

Such is the attraction of the Clipper Race to sailors around the world that the next edition will feature skippers from Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Ireland, as well as the UK. Damian Parnham (48) and Chris Hollis (33) both come from the East Coast of Australia and are looking to build on the growing tradition of Australian success in the race after the last two editions were won by Australian skippers. Eric Holden (33) hails from Vancouver in Canada, and having originally been introduced to the Clip-

per Race after his sister took part in 1999, brings a wealth of experience to the table including a stint as weather forecaster for the Canadian Sailing Team at London 2012 Olympics. Patrick van der Zijden, 43 from Vogelenzang in the Netherlands will be the first Dutchman to skipper the Clipper Race and brings his passion for teaching people to sail to the race. While Irishman Sean McCarter (31) is looking forward to racing into Ireland and being welcomed by a home crowd on the race. The British contingent features a mix of experience and young chargers, keen to make their mark on the sailing world. Matt Mitchell (26), Oliver Cotterell (27) and Richard Gould (26) are all looking to emulate the success of the Clipper Race’s youngest ever winning skipper, Alex Thomson. While returning to the race are Gareth Glover (36) and Pete Stirling (47). Gareth skippered New York during the Clipper 11-12 Race while Pete led Jamaica Lightning

Bolt in the 09-10 edition of the race. Simon Talbot, 43, from Essex, completes the line-up of British Challengers.

The twelve skippers will now begin the task of taking the Clipper Race crew through their final training ahead of the race start in the summer. At 40,000 miles this is the world’s longest ocean race and takes almost a year to visit 15 ports on six continents, including Qingdao. The Olympic sailing city will also boast an entry again; the fifth time the Chinese city will be represented around the world.

Extreme Sailing Series™ 2013

A faultless Alinghi win Act 2, Singapore

M

organ Larson and his Swiss team Alinghi sailed a faultless regatta at Act 2 of the Extreme Sailing Series™ in Singapore on one of the most memorable stadium race courses the Extreme 40 fleet have ever sailed on to claim overall victory in this truly spectacular Asian city. Only one race was sailed on the final day in typical light wind Singaporean conditions but it was one of the mosttense final races ever in the seven-year history of the Series with any of the teams capable of a podium position going into the race.

Shortly after the fleet left the dock and due to the lack of breeze, Race Committee made the call to run non-points scoring exhibition races, and as the racing was all but abandoned the wind filled in, and the committee were able to complete one more race which changed the face of the Act results. According to the SAP analytics, at different stages during the final race, four teams including Alinghi (SUI), Red Bull Sailing Team (AUT), SAP Extreme Sailing (DEN) and Realteam (SUI) were all in podium positions with the constant shuffling of the leader board making it anyone’s game. Morgan Larson, who has led the pack since race six, was unflappable and his Swiss team claim a deserved win, their first win since Almeria in 2011. “We’re ecstatic! It’s just been a great week for the team. We had a great time here in Singapore which really helped us to perform. It’s a great city, with tough sailing conditions, but that’s the same for everybody and we just had that little bit of luck along the way and we also did a great job.” Roman Hagara’s Red Bull Sailing Team posed the biggest threat to Larson today, but Hagara knew it was a big ask to overhaul the Swiss in a single race and did well to hold his nerve to finish second, equalling his result from Act 1 in Muscat. “It’s

always tough when you don’t know when the last race is going to happen, but it worked out well for us and it’s great for the team. They did a great job on the boat. I think they really deserved it and it’s great for the overall standing now.” Red Bull Sailing Team are now tied on points with Alinghi at the top of the overall Series leader board. Four days of challenging, light winds on Marina Bay required patience, nerves of steel and a cool head from the Extreme 40 sailors, which SAP Extreme Sailing Team had by the bucket load. The Danish squad came into the final day tied on points with The Wave, Muscat in third place after their best performance on the Series to date yesterday, and a third place in today’s race saw the team secure their first ever podium position in third. Co-Skipper and tactician Rasmus Kostner was beaming after racing. “It’s fantastic, I think it is a real milestone for SAP Extreme Sailing Team and we’re really happy with a podium finish here. We’ve been looking for that for a long time.” The icing on the cake for the Danish team is to upgrade from seventh to fourth on the overall Series leader board. Jérome Clerc, in what is only his second Extreme 40 Act at the helm of Realteam, may have had a hard start to the regatta finishing the second day in seventh place, but over the last two days the 2012 D35 champion hit the accelerate button and a second place in today’s race ultimately led his team to a fourth place finish overall. “We really didn’t expect to see these kind of results so early on in the season but it’s really great! We’ve made a lot of improvements since Oman, the crew did a great job the last two days and I think after today we can confirm we are really improving as a team! We can play against the best for the podium position in the light wind conditions, so now we will have to see if we can manage this in Qingdao.”

The invitational entry Team Aberdeen Singapore, supported by Local Event main partner Aberdeen Asset Management, were the local stars of the show, with the Singaporeans coming out to support them in their thousands, as well as the fans watching the racing live from home on national broadcaster Starhub Sports Arena. The entertainment was non-stop in Singapore with the NeilPryde Windsurf Racing Series and a public Race Village which over the course of the event had live music and performances from local acts. Helm of the local team Robert Greenhalgh, who returned to the Series this year after a five-year hiatus, summed up the feeling amongst the fleet. “It’s been great being in Singapore, it’s a great venue for this format of racing. There’s been lots of locals watching the racing and I’m sure next year will be bigger and better!” Watch a video as Team Aberdeen Singapore take a ride on the world famous Singapore Flyer here. Next, the global road show moves on to Qingdao, China’s Olympic sailing city, a regular on the Extreme Sailing Series as the fleet return for the third consecutive year, 2nd-5th May 2013.

Qingdao Sailing

The biggest surprise of the day perhaps came from The Wave, Muscat. Known for their ability to fight back on the final day, today’s single race just wasn’t enough for skipper Leigh McMillan and a poor start ultimately cost them the podium as a deflated McMillan explained, “That race was all decided on the start. We thought we had a good strategy, it just didn’t quite pan-out for us. The fleet got away and there were no options to come back into the race so it was decided there and then.”

Qingdao Expat Charity (QEC) - The Committee & How We Help

H

istorically QEC has lead education scholarships and schooling support for rural children to continue their education, despite unforeseen difficulties. However, with the changes in the government’s access to schooling for Primary and Middle School, QEC has sought more ways to support the local community. Medical issues have been a key focus for a while now. For the last couple of issues of our community newsletter, QEM, we have shared with you a few stories and photos of young children who have been granted financial aid and support from QEC. This vital lifeline of help then ensures the necessary surgery. Usually the committee faces applications from the parents and hospital doctors, in close liaison, when the hospital staff feels they have a strong case for appeal. Heart defects are often the cause for application but we have also discussed cases of corrective foot surgery. The committee meets monthly, taking one evening to gather in the business centre of the InterContinental Hotel, compliments of Mr. Wassermann who whole-heartedly supports our efforts. Presented with a case, the committee submits an application form to the doctors for a diagnosis and prognosis. This leads to conversations

with committee liaison members directly with the hospital. The family’s personal situation is assessed and the committee agrees a donation amount. Payment is made directly to the hospital accounts department under the patient’s name. A receipt is kept for QEC records. Our records are carefully maintained. Members of QEC will make a couple of visits to the hospital around the time or the recovery period of the surgery. Our QEC liaison will be in telephone contact with the doctors to hear about progress. QEC committee would like to welcome new people to join the group; if you have a little time to spare, would be able to assist in the meetings: we welcome you:

The Humble Administrator’s Garden

A Foreigner’s Adventure in China

S

uzhou is only two hours by train from Shanghai. The Rough Guide to China had given me the impression that the city was compact enough for us to be able to walk from one garden to another. Not so – but taxis were plentiful and cheap. Having been a ‘humble administrator’ myself, I was intrigued to visit ‘The Humble Administrator’s Garden’. The title betrays false modesty, or perhaps a tongue in the cheek. We spent three enriching hours there, visiting pavilions with evocative names such as ‘The Far Away Looking Pavilion’ and ‘The Listening to the Sound of Rain Pavilion’, whilst admiring the Chinese genius for repose, order and beauty. ‘The Master of the

Nets Garden’ was equally rewarding.

So far, we had done what all visitors to Suzhou do. Now, we struck out adventurously. The Rough Guide had drawn my attention to Dongshan, a peninsula projecting into Lake Tai Hu. It’s about 35 km from Suzhou. We went to the Railway Station where drivers congregate. Catherine, our daughter, engaged in negotiations. The upshot was the three of us travelling in a decent mini-bus, for which we paid 500 yuan (£35 at the then rate of exchange) for the whole trip. Before long, we were driving beside the lake, with islands looming out of the haze. We asked the driver to take us first to Zijin An, a former temple or nunnery. We were the only vis-

itors. The place emanated peace. In a glass case in a hall were lifesize clay modelled figures of the sixteen ‘arhats’ (sages), each with a distinctive face, centuries old.

Next stop was a temple, Longtou Shan, on top of a low hill. It turned out to be a special day for prayers. Six women were seated around a table inside chanting, whilst others, and one man, awaited their turn on the terrace. Far from regarding us as intruders, they made us welcome, and Catherine got involved in somewhat baffling conversation.

Our driver began to show his resourcefulness by finding a lakeside hotel where we, with him, enjoyed a lunch which included local fish. More negotiations, this time with a ferryman, who took us

Back on the mainland, the driver told us to follow the ferryman, who took us along a path through orange groves. We emerged into a village street in Luxiang, a ‘heritage’ village. The ferryman had done us the good turn of enabling us to avoid paying a fee at the official entrance. The driver knocked on the door of a friend. We were invited inside, and given bottles of water to help us recover from the heat and humidity. The friend then escorted us along the narrow streets and into ‘halls’ – residences of historical significance. One,

Huilaotang, had been converted into a luxury hotel: an unsuspected treasure behind such unassuming walls.

Then back to the comfortable Bamboo Grove Hotel in Suzhou. Our driver had well earned his 500 yuan, and had revisited an old friend. As for us, we had seen the countryside, crossed a bit of the third largest lake in China and sampled Chinese hospitality.

The month was September, and we had found the main gardens in Suzhou busy. On the last of our four days, it was a relief to find a small garden where we were almost the only visitors: Shuang Ta, with white columns, lovely bonsai and twin pagodas. In corridors on each side were brick and stone carvings, one of ‘No.1 scholar lingering along the street’. We felt like lingering, too.

hair tip from the Hair Doctor

2

Home hairstyling for longer hair is never easy and often time consuming. Here’s a tip to achieve volume and wave in the hair when you style your hair in the mornings. At night lightly spray your hair with water or moisturising spray then tie your hair into a “twisted top knot”, secured with either bands or pins. This keeps the hair off your face as you sleep and when released in the morning will give your hair natural volume and wave, which can then be easily styled into place. This tip is good for the beach too, keeping the hair out of the way and looking cute while you swim or sunbathe, and then creating an instant tousled, voluminous look for the evening, saving time and always looking good for the right occasions. For free lessons and tips about this ask the Hair Doc during your next appointment. Stay looking healthy and sharp for the coming summer! All the Best, Steve -The Hair Doc

As hair conditioning is always important, you should always use a good hair conditioner, especially if you have any colour or highlights in your hair. To improve the performance of your hair conditioner, leave the conditioner in your hair for a least 5 minutes and then rinse it out with cool water and never rinse with hot water. The cool water helps to smooth down the cuticles of the hair, thereby trapping more of the hair conditioner inside the hair, this will increase the effectiveness of your hair conditioner. Hot water lifts the hair cuticles and allows more of the conditioner to be rinsed away making it less effective.
