Musings of the Creative team Dear Friends & Expats

Historically the summer time brings the largest turnover of foreigners; it is traditionally the most common time to wave goodbye to those exiting and welcome the newcomers. If you are preparing to set off now, we wish you all the very best in your next adventure. To those newly arrived (or imminently arriving) a big warm welcome to you.

Please see all the regular social opportunities in this summer issue of QEM plus the contact page of the members of our close-knit community, who are ready to help you with questions you may have. Later in September we will see the annual Welcome BBQ and there will be new ideas coming up at the QICC (Qingdao International Community Centre). Keep cool, active and happy this summer!

12 BRAND NEW 70-FOOT OCEAN RACING YACHTS A 40,000-MILE CIRCUMNAVIGATION 15 RACES - 13 COUNTRIES - 1 WINNER.

Qingdao Expat Magazine - 4

L

ondon is to host the start and finish of the 2013-14 edition of the Clipper Race, leaving the capital on 1 September 2013 and not returning until July 2014.

The announcement was made at St Katharine Docks in front of Tower Bridge by Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Clipper Race founder and chairman, the legendary yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. Sir Robin became the first person to sail solo non-stop around the world in 1968-69 and established the Clipper Race in 1996 to offer amateurs from all walks of life the opportunity to experience the thrill of ocean racing and a circumnavigation of the planet. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “Playing host to the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race will once again see London showcasing why it is the best big city on earth in which to hold major sporting events. It’s a fantastic honour for the capital to mark the beginning and end of this feat of human endeavour, which will not only provide an awesome spectacle for hordes of sailing fans, but also give a huge boost to the wider London economy. “Those who take part are an inspiration to us all and exhibit the very best of the human spirit. As they battle through everything the elements can throw at them, I wish everyone on board these stunning vessels the very best of luck.”

The event will see the debut of the third generation Clipper 70 ocean racing yacht. The twelve-strong matched fleet will be hosted in a race village at St Katharine Docks, central London’s only marina and the official Clipper Race start and finish port. The boats will begin and end their global journey in the Thames in front of Tower Bridge. Over 3000 people have participated in the Clipper Race over the last 17 years in what has become the world’s premier ocean race for non-professional and novice sailors. The new enlarged fleet has been commissioned in response to the growing demand for crew places and will serve the event through to 2020. The Clipper 70s will make a big impact in St Katharine Docks and on the Thames. At 40,000 miles this is the world’s longest ocean race and takes almost a year to visit 15 ports on six continents, including Qingdao. The Olympic sailing city will also boast an entry again; the fifth time the Chinese city will be represented around the world. For further information about the race visit: www.clipperroundtheworld.com

Extreme Sailing Series™ 2013 SAP Extreme Sailing Team’s co-skipper and tactician Rasmus Kostner’s Blog

SAP Extreme Sailing Team’s co-skipper and tactician Rasmus Kostner reflects on the teams ‘best ever’ day from Act 3 Qingdao and looks ahead to the rest of the year where he predicts some big changes on the leader board.

I

t’s been a busy month for the SAP Extreme Sailing Team as the summer sailing season and events kick off across Europe.

Last month we travelled to Qingdao, China for Act 3 of the Extreme Sailing Series™ and, as predicted, the venue delivered similar light conditions to the first two Acts of the year.

Reviewing and analyzing performance between Acts is definitely paying off and we had some fantastic racing in China throughout the four days. The winds were quite shifty and light most days and with Fushan Bay being surrounded by buildings, we needed to stay clear of the shadow cast by the sky huge scrapers to avoid areas of no wind and, as always, focus on sailing minimum distance under max speed. Having maintained our third place ranking throughout the Act, we reached the final day with a podium place open to us once again and dug deep to maintain our hard fought position of fourth in the overall rankings. We had a superb day on the water, maybe even our best ever, with clean racing, good boat handling and excellent crew dynamics translating directly to performance. We came away from Qingdao with three race wins and a third place

overall in Act 3, a real boost for the team this season. A very buoyant team left China and returned to Denmark!

As we look ahead to the next few Acts in Europe, I believe we will almost see a new start to the Series as some of the other competitors will come into their own with the more familiar conditions. It will be a much more physical game on the water and I suspect we will see some significant changes to the leader board. Last year we would certainly have considered ourselves stronger in the breezier conditions and hope that remains true as we keep the pressure on the guys at the top of the leader board.

A very buoyant team left China and returned to Denmark! “

The SAP Extreme 40 was packed away in its container but this didn’t mean the SAP Extreme Sailing Team were going to be putting our feet up. It was onto the next sailing event, in Denmark, the Palby Fyn Cup, the annual event with 285 entries this year competing around the island of Fyn for the 138 nautical miles race. The Palby Fyn Cup ended up as a two horse race between us and the Carbon 3 race team. We narrowly edged out the Carbon 3 race team to take line honours. We were delighted to have won but we were frustrated to miss out on securing a record! We were in striking distance of the record time of 10 hours

and 7 minutes set in 2009 but light wind conditions in the last part of the race meant we finished at 03.13 in the morning with an elapsed time of 13.58.42 hours, but still triumphant!

Qingdao Expat Charity News By Cathy Ben-David

S

ome of our readers may remember Steve and Xinwei who we have supported in various ways over the last few years. They relentlessly and selflessly continue, despite endless struggles, in their plight to maintain a sanctuary and home for abandoned small children. The House of Mephibosheth became the only home for many. Steve had self-built, purposefully designed for wheelchair access, a warm spacious home. During an expat’s visit in January 2013 they cared for over 40 children ranging from small babies to even teenagers. Each one has a story; each one has an

illness, disability or severe condition resulting in abandonment usually.

Due to conditions beyond their control Steve and Xinwei needed to move 99% of all the children to a new location, following a fatal fire in a care home in Henan Province. Authorities began to carry out month-long inspections of orphanages run by individuals and private operators in China. Although the inspection reported a high standard of care and provision at the House of Mephibosheth they ruled that all children must remain in their home province; hence a mass move to keep 99% of the children under Steve and Xinwei’s care, back in a nearby Province.

(Provided photos were taken in January 2013 during a visit to the home in DaDian, near LinYi.)

The Summer is here! So it’s time to hit the beach! Here are some useful hair tips for those holiday beach trips to keep your hair looking healthy and cool.

Qingdao Expat Magazine - 16

3. Bandanas

Leave your hair conditioner in the hair and do not rinse it out when you are at the beach or in the sun. The heat from the sun will help the conditioner to penetrate the hair more deeply and protect the hair from becoming to dry. The hair can be slicked back into a ponytail or bun with or without a side parting which will give you that slick look and keeping your hair under control, while giving your hair a nice refreshing treatment too. Just rinse the conditioner out in the evening and have great shiny and moisturized hair ready to style into your evening look.

Always look cool and fashionable and prevent the sun from fading your hair colour, especially red and copper colours. They keep your head cooler than a baseball cap due to their super light materials and can be matched perfectly to your beachwear.

2. Rinse Remember to rinse the hair with fresh water after you swim to remove colour faders like salt from the seawater or chlorine from the swimming pool. Bottled water will work very nicely for this.

4. Flower Clips How to look fashionable on the beach w h i l e keeping your hair a w a y f r o m your face and still looking elegant? A nice big fake flower clip is the perfect accessory. Your hair can be controlled and out of the way in either a ponytail or bun and the flower clip added to create a “style.
