Feedlot Diets with High DGS Inclusion As the saying goes “if your neighbor is without a job, it is a recession; if you are without a job, it is a depression”. Perhaps the best indicator of the health of the U.S. economy is the choice/select spread for fed cattle. Today, (February 24) as I write this article fed cattle are selling for $78 – $84:cwt. And the choice/select spread is $1.13:lb. In fact, since February 13 and prior to today, the choice/select spread has ranged between 9¢ to 87¢:lb. While the American consumer prefers choice beef, when the perception of tough economic times becomes widespread, Americans will eat more lower priced ground beef than higher priced steaks and roasts. Accordingly, the negative perception of the U.S. economy is being translated into lower demand for choice cattle and not only lower prices for fed cattle in general, but a narrow/minimal choice select spread. Hopefully, as we enter the spring & summer grilling season fed cattle prices and the choice/select spread will increase. Previously completed studies (presented in earlier articles) at ISU and other universities have shown that feeding higher levels (35 – 45% on a DM basis) of distillers grains (DGS) to feedlot cattle has produced satisfactory performance but has resulted in lower quality grades, slower ADG when feeding steers to a constant weight or for a similar number of days and has increased returns over feed cost. A recently completed study conducted at the ISU Farm-Lexington and at the SIUCarbondale Farm evaluated grow-finish diets containing either dry or wet DGS fed at 0, 40, 70:40 split or a 40:70% split on a DM basis. In trial one, steers were fed 40% wet DGS for 56 days and then switched to 70% wet DGS for 50 or 86 days or were fed 70% wet DGS for 56 days and then switched to 40% wet DGS for 50 or 86 days. In trial two, steers were fed 40% dry DGS (DDGS) for 85 days and then switched to 70% DDGS for 81 or 128 days or were fed 70% DDGS for 85 days and then switched to 40% DDGS for 81 or 128 days. When fed modified wet DGS (50% DM), steers consuming diets containing 70% DGS tended to have lower ADG (2.3 lbs.) compared to steers fed 40% DGS (2.61 lbs.) 0% DGS (2.8 lbs.). When fed wet DGS steers consuming diets containing 70% DGS had significantly lower gain to feed ratios comparing 0.15 for 0% DGS, to 0.11 for 40% DGS, to

0.09 for 70:40 or 40:70 DGS. When DDGS steers were fed diets containing 70% DDGS during the second part of the feeding period they gained significantly slower and had lower gain to feed ratios than steers fed 0% DDGS, 40% DDGS or 70:40% DDGS. No significant differences were observed in carcass marbling scores (quality grade), yield grades, rib eye area, hot carcass weight or KPH% were observed whether cattle were fed 0, 40, 40:70 or 70:40% DGS, (wet or dry). Steers fed wet DGS had significantly lower liver abscess scores than control steers fed shelled corn with 0% added DGS. Liver abscess scores were similar between control steers and steers fed DDGS. The data of this study suggest that feeding DGS at 40% or higher concentrations of the diet DM may (but not always) decrease ADG and gain to feed ratio (G:F). Feeding wet DGS levels as high as 70% can significantly decrease ADG and G:F. Feeding higher DGS levels in the dry form may have little (certainly less) detrimental effects on cattle performance than modified wet DGS. Whether fed wet or dry, level of DGS, inclusion did not affect carcass quality as estimated by marbling score. Feeding DGS as a modified wet (50% DM) product may decrease liver abscess scores compared to diets containing only shelled corn as the primary energy score. This effect on liver abscess scores may be lost when feeding DDGS at higher (40% of DM intake or greater) inclusion rates. When including DGS at the 70% level, the performance data of this study suggests steers should be started at 70% inclusion then stepped down to 40% inclusion during the second part of the finishing period. A concern that always exists, whenever dietary inclusion rates for DGS are equal to or greater than 40% is sulfur toxicity and polioencephalomalacia (PEM). No symptoms of PEM or sulfur toxicity were observed in this study. However, as a precautionary measure 200 mg of thiamin (Vitamin B1) were fed per steer per day. This is the first study of which we are aware that DGS has been included in feedlot diets as high as 70% on a DM basis. Therefore, to insure the performance observed is repeatable, we are currently conducting a second, similar study. Our first year is off to a great start… and we have much more ahead of us! The benefits these junior organizations offer will go way beyond an exhibitor’s years in the show ring. The overwhelming support we have already received has been much appreciated. This month we will begin our fundraiser drive. Oklahoma Club Calf Association - March ‘09

I think we are on the way to OYE; at least that’s what they said as we pulled out a little bit ago. I didn’t look in the trailer to check, but I was told the heifers and tack was loaded and we are headed south, plus this is the day we are suppose to arrive. My family has always rose to the occasion, but I don’t know this time, with almost 100 head of 1st calf heifers yet to calve, along with the cowherd, we are all about to drown in the flood of work that has covered us. Along with that Dad is staying home, going to miss it for the 1st time since 1957. He says his legs will not pull a calf, but he can see and call Brad and tell him where to come. Mom is coming tomorrow for the OCCA meeting, then back home until next weekend when they both plan to come down for the Saturday steer show. He is not sure we can pull it off without him, but we will see just how good of a teacher he has been. This is truly a family happening and adventure, as I am sure this is being repeated all over the state, with the droughts and all of the fires, it truly brings us all together, but mark my work, we will have a great show and will share memories for years to come. Heifer and steer exhibitors are racing down the home stretch and many races will be decided between now and next Sunday night when the Grand Steer is slapped at OYE in Oklahoma City. It has been a super year with many new exhibitors and families in our club. High fuel prices along with overall cost sky rocketing out of sight has not dampened the spirit of our members and everyone is ready to join up and start a new year next Monday. Don’t forget to get your dues paid to avoid missing any points in the upcoming year. Remember, the Beef Expo coming up in April in Stillwater where we also have our year end banquet and award breed buckles, Top Ten Jackets, new trailers, along with many, many other prizes and awards. Remember, this is a family oriented organization that brings together people from all walks of life with a common interest, to raise and exhibit quality livestock in an atmosphere that leads to new friendships with the parents as well as the exhibitors. Friendships that with survive high cost, droughts, recessions and any other thing that the world may choose to through at us. As we bring the year to a close, with the Worlds Largest All Junior Show, let us the parents thank the kids and you kids thank the parents for working together towards a common goal that you can’t find in any other country in the world. We are both fortunate and let’s all thank God for giving us this opportunity to strengthen family ties. See you at the Beef Expo along with the spring and summer jackpots. Strategies for Rescuing Your Retirement Work with your Financial Advisor. There are many do-ityourself investment resources available to investors today, but none of them can replace the experienced, personal service we provide. We have the expertise and resources to offer an understanding of your complete financial picture, not just your investments. Additionally, in periods of market volatility, when you need the most support, we also can provide: • Access to important decision-making research and information • Ongoing monitoring of your investment portfolio, while anticipating your changing needs • A comprehensive plan for retirement that takes into consideration your other goals—education funding and estate planning, for instance—and includes real responses to market volatility and what the changing markets mean for you Have a plan. Developing a financial plan is one of the best ways to meet your long-term goals. Your plan should also include a market volatility action plan to help you set realistic goals and manage return expectations in “what if ” situations. We can create a new plan for you or refine an existing one. Importantly, we will also follow up at set intervals or whenever changes in your life warrant a financial review. Invest regularly. If you are still working, saving part of your salary for your retirement is an excellent way to rebuild savings that were depressed by market conditions. According to a 2007 Urban Institute study, the combination of working longer, continuing to save, reducing spending and delaying Social Security benefits could significantly increase your retirement income. Just like part-time work allowed many people to find a balance between their work and personal lives, part-time retirement could help control the uncertainties of the financial markets by providing an extra cushion of income to fund the pleasures of your retirement. Check your cash flow. Keeping track of where your money goes can give you a better picture of how long your retirement funds might last, or how much you might need to save. Historically, most breeders have waited until a herd check could be scheduled and a veterinarian could palpate the cows. This can be a challenging delay, exasperated even further if pregnancy confirmation mistakes are made by inexperienced palpation technicians. The sooner pregnancy can be confirmed, faster and better management decisions can be made, including earlier rebreeding and a shorter calving interval. One option to confirm pregnancy sooner, and with less labor hassles is a blood-based pregnancy test known as BioPRYN®. This test is available through a number of laboratories across the U.S., and it can confirm pregnancy as soon as 30 days after breeding. The test is 99 percent accurate when an animal is identified as non-pregnant. Safe option A useful management tool for cattle operations of all sizes, BioPRYN offers accuracy that is cost-effective and easy-to-use. “Producers from large and small operations find different benefits to utilizing our blood test for pregnancy detection,” explains Jeremy Howard of BioTracking. “Larger operations can administer the test soon enough to breed the cow back for a calf that still fits within their calving window. Breeders with fewer animals are able to pregcheck cows when they’re ready to be checked. Before, many had to wait until enough needed checking to make it cost-effective to pay someone to come out. BioPRYN also allows breeders to work cattle when it fits into their schedule.” “After 30 days we use BioPRYN to confirm pregnancies in the spring and administer it again in the fall to double check,” says Ben Congrove of Congrove Farms. “If they don’t take the embryos, we have time to make the management decision to turn them back in with the clean up bull or catch them on their next heat.” Ben runs a club calf recipient program with about 75 recipient cattle near Laurelville, Ohio. With the use of the blood test, breeders also may reduce the chance of losing a pregnancy. Many breeders are concerned with these losses, due to invasive palpation, increased handling stress to the female, or a combination of effects. “We transfer a lot of high dollar embryos made from expensive club calf bull semen,” explains Congrove. “We’ve come to rely on BioPRYN to avoid abortion loss and eliminate the risk of invasive palpations.” “University research has shown that palpation can cause anywhere from 2 to 11 percent death loss from the invasiveness of the technique alone. For valuable pregnancies, that’s quite bit of risk,” says Howard. “This test eliminates the risk of potential trauma to the embryo and disruption of the pregnancy that palpation can sometimes cause.”

A simple blood sample which can be easily taken from the cow’s tail is all that is needed to perform a pregnancy diagnosis with BioPRYN. Scientifically based, yet easy to use Pregnancy Specific Protein B (PSPB) was discovered by retired professor emeritus Dr. R. Garth Sasser during his career at the University of Idaho. He developed BioPRYN at BioTracking, LLC, which evaluates the presence of PSPB in the circulation of the animal. PSPB is only produced by the placenta of a growing fetus, which ensures a high level of accuracy in testing. The BioPRYN blood test easily can be taken from under the tail after minimal instruction, making it an easy alternative that does not require specialized training or extensive experience. As long as 90 days have passed since the last calving, pregnancy can be confirmed as soon as 30 days after breeding or 25 days post implant using embryo transfer. Once a BioPRYN lab receives the blood sample, test results can be produced in 27 hours and are then sent out to breeders via fax, phone, or e-mail. For Congrove, the quick results have allowed him to get a better handle on his herd and expected calving dates. By knowing which embryos settled and generated pregnancies, he’s able to prepare for calving of his highly valuable ET calves. “The biggest thing we’ve learned is that with BioPRYN we have a definite date,” says Congrove. “By testing exactly 30 days out, we can pinpoint which cows are pregnant and when they will calve.” It’s important for breeders to look at new reproductive tools in order to keep moving forward at the same pace as the fast progressing industry. For show cattle breeders, the early detection, non-invasive detecting, and shortened calving interval can significantly improve efficiency within a breeding program. BioPRYN gives breeders the freedom to pregnancy check on their own, and confidence in results that allow time to make the correct reproductive management decisions for their herd.
