Koepelgevangenis Arnhem is a special location with an impressive history. Where the building served as a prison until 2015, today it is a meeting and gathering venue. The impressive building has four boardrooms, three presentation rooms, three bars and various other spaces (escape rooms & game rooms). Both large and small meetings can perfectly take place here. In addition, various (team building) activities are organized. These include escaperooms, guided tours and escape games. The Koepelgevangenis is also perfect for organizing your fairs, congresses and meetings!

HISTORY
Koepelgevangenis Arnhem is a former prison designed by Johan Metzelaar in 1886. The complex was part of the penitentiary De Berg.
The building type was designed by Metzelaar according to the panopticon principle devised by Jeremy Bentham in 1791. This principle means that from the center of the circular complex, the guards could constantly keep an eye on the inmates.
In August 2015, the last detainee was transferred and the complex was no longer used as a house of detention. In September 2015, COA designated the former prison as a reception center for the many refugees entering the EU. Registered as a national monument, the complex now also serves as a venue for business meetings.
MEETINGS
Koepelgevangenis Arnhem is the ideal location for your (multi-day) meeting or gathering. With four boardrooms and three presentation rooms, there is always a space to suit your meeting!
Boardrooms
Koepelgevangenis Arnhem has four boardrooms. The boardrooms were inspired by spaces formerly used in the prison. These included a library, clothespin workshop, recreation room and a cover factory.
LIBRARY
Prisoners have the right to learn about the news in a prison. They also have the right to weekly use of a library facility, either in the form of a book cart or a physical library. At Koepelgevangenis Arnhem, this worked just like a public library. The inmates could borrow books for a certain amount of time and were allowed to visit the library one hour a week. Here they could then read the newspaper or a book, but it was also a time of rest, relaxation and entertainment. A place to take a break from thinking about prison life.
CLOTHESPIN WORKSHOP
Clothespins used to be made in the cell. When people newly entered the prison, they were not allowed to go to the workroom; there was no place for them. Someone would visit the inmates and ask if they wanted to work. If so, they started making clothespins. These were made using a board with a peg in the middle. The eyelet of the feather would fit into this pin. They then pushed the feather onto the peg, took the left and right side of the peg and clicked it in.
RECREATION ROOM
Recreation, in addition to labor, sports and an hour outside on the yard, a regular part of an inmate’s daily schedule. During those times, the cell doors were open and detainees were allowed to walk around and visit the recreation room, among other things. Here detainees could then shower and cook, as well as socialize, play cards, billiards, foosball or ping pong.
COVER FACTORY
Chair covers, among other things, used to be made in Koepelgevangenis Arnhem cover factory. This was a place of work for the inmates. The prisoners were paid an hourly wage for this. In our hall ‘’The Sleeve Factory’’ you will now find an old sewing machine that used to make the chair covers.
Presentation rooms
Koepelgevangenis Arnhem has three presentation rooms. These presentation rooms had different functions during the prison years:
PRAYER ROOM
The Prayer Room was used to hold church services. The Prayer Room was used to hold church services, one week a service for Protestants and the other week for Catholics. A maximum of 40 inmates were allowed to attend each service. A service lasted an hour and a half.
CHAPEL
The Chapel is one of the monumental parts of the Koepelgevangenis in Arnhem. Prisoners used to be able to attend religious services here. After the renovation this became a gymnasium and nowadays this is one of the rooms where we welcome our guests.
GYM
Detainees were given three hours a week as standard to exercise. This could be in the fitness room, in the gymnasium or on the sports field outside. The gymnasium was used for indoor sports. Mainly indoor soccer or volleyball was played here. Sometimes the guards also participated in a game of volleyball. Once or twice a year a field day was held. Then a soccer or volleyball tournament was organized. Depending on the weather, it was indoors or outdoors.
OTHER SPACES
In addition to the three presentation rooms, Koepelgevangenis Arnhem also has the Prison bar and Break-out bar. These spaces are very suitable for lunch and dinner. In addition, the rooms can also be set up as presentation rooms or drinks rooms.

GATHERING
Organize a gathering to remember! Koepelgevangenis Arnhem has various rooms that are extremely suitable for a business meeting, conference, ceremony, reception or anniversary party. The history and special architecture of the Koepelgevangenis will make your event extra special.
THE KOEPEL
One of the most unusual spaces in Koepelgevangenis Arnhem is the Koepel. This open and circular center space has a height of 37.9 meters and a diameter of 53 meters, and is crowned by a dome with iron trusses. The theory behind the circular shape is that the shape allowed guards to easily survey the entire prison from the center. The cell complex contains 206 cells and could house 250 prisoners. Because of its unusual shape and design, this space is great for an event that your guests are guaranteed to talk about for a long time to come!
THE CHAPEL
The chapel is one of the monumental parts of the Koepelgevangenis Arnhem. Formerly, inmates could attend their religion here, after the renovation it became a gymnasium and nowadays it is one of the spaces where we welcome our guests. In addition, the space is suitable as a presentation room and has its own outdoor terrace.
The Underground
In the middle of Koepelgevangenis Arnhem is “The Underground”. The Underground is an atmospheric space underground with a bar, lounge, casino tables and music installation, among other things. This unique space is therefore the ideal location for drinks or a company party for up to 60 people.

If you choose this option, you will purchase consumption tokens for your event. The cost is € 3.75 per coin.
Beverage package
Want to decide in advance what you want to spend on refreshments? Then choose a beverage package. The beverage package consists of house wine, beer and soft drinks.

The story of The Dome Escape begins with some rebellious jailers who have violently staged a coup in Arnhem’s Koepel prison. Warden Metzelaar is afraid that things will end badly for you, the inmates. Therefore, the warden, together with his confidants, has devised an escape plan to help you escape.
GUIDED TOURS
Always wanted to know what Koepelgevangenis Arnhem looks like on the inside? We regularly open the gates of the Koepelgevangenis for guided tours. Together with an ex-guardian you can take a look inside the cells, the isolation ward, the old visitors’ room and the air cages.
GPS-GAME

THE VENDETTA CODE
