WELCOME TO QUEEN ELIZABETH GRAMMAR SCHOOL

QEGS is one of the top independent boys’ schools in the country and has been educating boys for over 400 years. Now, we aim to combine the best of a traditional approach with an openness to innovation to be a down-to-earth school which prepares boys to take their place in the modern world. We aim to foster a sense of discovery, of intellectual curiosity. Our teachers revel in the subjects they love and so inspire the young men we are privileged to teach. Alongside this academic excellence, our staff are committed to creating an environment that provides opportunities for self-expression and the development of self-confidence through a wide-ranging co-curricular programme. During their time at QEGS, our boys will experience an education that is energetic and fun, which will enable them to develop resilience for the challenges they will encounter in their lives after QEGS, and a sense of proportion and humour to take those challenges in their stride. The QEGS community is made up of people from different backgrounds, with different perspectives. We aim for our pupils to show respect for each other, and to celebrate these differences in a culture characterised by kindness to enable each pupil to become the best version of himself, with a confident sense of his individuality. We expect pupils to be kind to each other, to those beyond the school community, and to themselves. At QEGS, your son will make friends for life and will become part of a network of alumni that will provide a source of support for his professional life. I hope that you will want to visit QEGS to look around and experience the school for yourselves.

IT’S THE WAY WE’VE BEEN We’re proud of our past and the way it inspires everyone in our school, every day. Empowered by the greatness of QEGS’ former luminaries, boys use the accomplishments of the past, to inform their own dynamic futures in a modern, progressive QEGS culture that is always challenging, always inspiring and always moving forward.

We understand all about the way boys learn. Our heritage may date back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, but we’re definitely not old school in our thinking. With over 400 years’ expertise in enabling boys to be the very best they can be, we understand how to create an engaging, immersive curriculum that optimises individual potential. We know that boys respond best to teaching styles which fit their needs; active, well-paced practical learning with frequent brain breaks and opportunities for movement. So right from the start, boys benefit from being in a modern, vibrant learning environment which is fluid, dynamic and 100% focused on tailored learning, giving them the confidence to learn and grow at their own pace.

BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN BOYS SINCE 1591 The origin of The Old Savilians. Queen Elizabeth I was our very first inspiration. In 1591, a charter was granted authorising fourteen men to act as Governors of our ‘Free School of Queen Elizabeth’. Five of them bore the name Savile and ever since, generations of the Savile family have played key roles in our history – hence why our alumni association is called The Old Savilians’ Club.

Our broad range of teaching and learning styles are designed to help boys achieve their academic objectives and most importantly, enjoy every minute of the curriculum. Lessons are fast-paced, varied, fun and challenging, incorporating competitive elements and kinetic activity which engage boys from the beginning of the lesson, and keep them engaged throughout.

‘Relational learning’ forms the foundation of academic success, forging an impactful connection and relationship between boys and teaching staff. Teachers help boys to achieve their potential by holding them to high but attainable expectations. Always interested in them and their ultimate success, they encourage feedback through nurturing relationships built on mutual trust and respect.

IN THE SIXTH FORM In the Sixth Form, the relationships boys build both inside and outside the classroom in our welcoming community, help to prepare them for further education, careers and life.

IT’S THE WAY AN EDUCATION AT QEGS QEGS Enrichment and Development programme (QED) adds a real edge to what is already a high-octane academic experience. Increasingly, top universities and employers are seeking not just high grades but greater individual qualities; those sparks of creativity, resilience, teamwork and leadership which differentiate the best from the rest. QED is designed to foster these with a stimulating menu of 96 activities, ranging from bushcraft, circus skills, sculpture and animation to kayaking and mountain biking. With over 50 clubs and societies, our rich array of experiences and activities makes QEGS an exciting place to be, full of new possibilities to explore hidden talents and share unprecedented opportunities, in a way that fires passions, ignites new interests and adds real breadth and diversity to the #MadeInQEGS experience.

IS SO RICHLY REWARDING Musical QEGS. Music abounds at QEGS, with jazz, rock, funk, blues and classical ensembles evolving each year, and boys regularly showcasing their abilities in performances, concerts, recitals and assemblies. Our spacious, fully computerised suites are equipped for listening, performing and composing, and we work with over 30 visiting musicians to nurture talent with individual instrument and singing lessons.

IT’S THE WAY OUR TEACHERS ARE ALSO INSPIRATIONAL ROLE MODELS When boys join the QEGS family, they feel an immediate sense of belonging and forge unbreakable bonds with fellow students and staff. Our exceptional staff are not just teachers but role models, here to inspire students with a vision of everything they can be. Supremely well qualified in their respective fields, what connects them is a shared commitment to academic excellence and a desire to equip boys with the tools they need to grow into kind, confident, socially aware young men. From Day One, staff and boys develop strong relationships through a mentoring programme which gives each student the courage to meet new challenges and grow his capabilities.

Parents are role models too. Inspirational role models can be found closer to home too. As a parent and role model, you’re already playing your part in shaping your son’s future, and we believe in working closely with parents and providing invaluable support. This, coupled with our focus on robust pastoral care, ensures that we provide a nurturing, character-building environment, where every boy can thrive and achieve to the very best of his abilities.

Our alumni help the next generation to excel. Our in-school mentoring is also supported by frequent visits from our high-achieving alumni, who illuminate our events with their inspirational journeys. Old Savilians are regular contributors to school life, frequently giving lectures, freely sharing careers advice and offering bespoke 1:1 support to students through our #MadeInQEGS Mentoring Scheme.

IT’S THE WAY WE VALUE SMILES AS MUCH AS SUCCESS To students past and present, QEGS is something of an academic legend. The badge, the camaraderie, the feeling of pride in the tie that lasts a lifetime and binds everyone together, the sense of endeavour that drives every achievement, all emanate from the values we live and breathe every day. But what we value above all else, is seeing everyone enjoy the journey. Our aim is to provide an education that is precisely tailored to every boy’s individual needs, hopes and aspirations. So, wherever his skills may take him, whether it’s a first-choice university, a pioneering role in the global community or an alternative future he always imagined for himself, he will happily achieve his full potential at QEGS.
