he Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) is an educational resource for the community, providing accessible and quality programming for those seeking to enrich their personal lives, advance academic skills, or develop in their professional careers.

Approximately 200 non-credit courses are offered throughout the year (online, in-person, and hybrid formats) in the areas of Professional Development, Preparatory Skills, Chinese Academy, and Personal Enrichment. The Department also offers a variety of grant- and contract-funded programs.

rofessional development provides specialized training, formal education, and advanced professional learning opportunities to help students, adult learners, administrators, teachers, and other professionals improve their knowledge, competence, skill, and effectiveness in the work they do or careers they are pursuing. The programs often serve as direct pathways to employment or college admission.

Quite notable is CEWD’s long-standing array of occupational certificates/ certifications in the healthcare arena, including Phlebotomy Technician, EKG Technician, Patient Care Technician, IV Technician, Emergency Room Technician, as well as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Certified Billing and Coding Specialist, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA), and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Always seeking to expand offerings, the Department has newly added Pharmacy Technician, Dental Assistant, and Veterinary Assistant to the mix.

EWD encourages Teachers to invest in their career by earning credits towards their professional development. We offer Credits and Certifications beyond a bachelor’s degree that can boost knowledge, confidence and their income.

As part of the City University of New York, Queensborough Community College offers the most affordable higher education on a per-credit basis in New York City.

With courses from over 40 majors and certificate options to choose from and multiple modalities including in-person, online, hybrid and HyFlex, Teachers, Educators on Sabbatical and Paraprofessionals can learn and earn their way throughout the academic year! the opportunity to expand your horizon with advanced vocabulary and grammar, essay writing, and an introduction to American culture.

You can also increase your chances of advancing professionally with classes such as English for the workforce and health occupations and resume writing/ interview preparation. Each class comes with a syllabus and an assigned textbook. This is the ideal program for joining the college community or the workforce.

EWD offers an online GED/HSE Prep program. The course provides a broad and strategic approach to preparation for the GED test, with focus on four distinct sections—Mathematical Reasoning; Science; Social Studies; and Reading through Language Arts. he Port of Entry Program (POE) is an intensive ESL program to provide international students and new immigrants with language skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to succeed in higher education and professional careers in the United States. Students actively participate in the mastering of language skills and are taught by experienced ESL faculty using modern techniques and materials. Some key highlights are:

• Communicative Language Teaching, where learners are encouraged to use the language in real-life situations while building on practical language skills, such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing;

he program is designed for speakers of other languages who need to improve their English communication skills, with a focus on all skills from speaking and listening, to reading and writing. Whether you need to master English for professional, educational, or personal reasons, we have a class for you. We offer six levels: from beginner to advanced. In addition to joining the ESL classes, you have

• Personalization, where instructors customize content based on learners’ interests, goals, and proficiency levels;

• Integration of Technology, through which language learners have access to multimedia resources; • On-demand support with a dedicated team to provide advice to students seeking I-20 and F1 visa support; and • The fostering of cultural awareness to provide language learners with a connection to the greater Queens community.

The program consists of 234 hours in Spring and fall, 126 hours in summer (including different levels of instruction) and is offered Monday through Thursday from 9:30 am -2:00 pm. Scholarships for outstanding students are available.

he Chinese Academy is a full-year program that runs from September to June, offered to students in grades kindergarten through 12. The Regular Chinese class is for students from Mandarin speaking families; The Chineseas-a-Second-Language (CSL) course is for those who speak other languages and those with other cultural backgrounds. In addition to the language classes, the Chinese Academy offers classes in Arts & Crafts, Chess, Clay Dough making, Dance, Drawing, Ukulele, Tennis, and Taekwondo. Additionally, an academic enrichment program was developed as an educational resource for children, designed to supplement academics beyond everyday schooling. The program offers math, reading and writing prep, with

some classes geared specifically toward the NYS ELA and Math Assessments; NYC Specialized High School Exam; and the SAT. Over the years, the program extended its reach to include such enrichment courses as technology, coding (Python), art, poetry, creative writing, robotics, and more. The newest initiative encourages parents to take a course of their own after dropping off their children on campus for Chinese Academy and enrichment programs, yoga and tennis for such parents are now available! EWD’s Personal Enrichment program encourages community members to explore a wide range of activities and interests in their quest for selfgrowth or just for fun. These courses may include workshops in Culture and Humanities, Art, History, Swim or Dance. Whatever your interest, there is probably a course for you, whether online or in person. While recreational swim programs/instruction remain the largest component of current offerings, additional programs are in the works as we rebuild our slate of offerings post-COVID. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ENTRY PROGRAM

Medical Arts Building, Room 207 Phone: 718-631-6699 he Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) is a pre-collegiate program, successfully running at Queensborough Community College since 2006. The program, which is funded by the New York State Department of Education, seeks to strengthen students’ skills in science and math and motivate them to enroll in college and pursue careers in science, technology, and licensed professions. STEP is offered to students in grades 7-12 who are either an underrepresented minority and/or economically-disadvantaged.

Medical Arts Building, Room MC 34 Phone: 718-281-5331 he Liberty Partnerships Program, Project PRIZE, funded by the New York State Education Department, links middle and high schools in the Queens community with the College. It identifies students in need of extra support services, and through various opportunities, increases their motivation to graduate, pursue post-secondary education and/or meaningful employment.

Project PRIZE offers after-school, summer, and Saturday programs. The Saturday and summer programs are held at the College. Services provided include academic proficiency, Regents test preparation, STEM, the arts, sports, mentoring, tutoring in all subjects, cultural enrichment, and field trips. Students receive college and career preparation, which includes college tours, Career Day, SAT prep, and internships. The parental engagement component offers access to scheduled youth conferences, workshops for parents, and individual and family counseling.
