Future MKE Design Problem Research Process Final Solution

Future MKE Overview Arteries are the links and mechanisms that serve to orientate us and enable access. By definition, arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. They are important routes in a system of roads, rivers, or railroad lines that carry people, goods and services across towns, cities and countries. For the next assignment will be looking into past, present and future MKE by following one of the three main arteries that run through Milwaukee, specifically Water Street Can data connect us to the past? How does the history of a place link us to its present and provide us with a positive sense of its future? For us to understand this artery of Milwaukee we must know it’s “history and heritage, and consider where it might be heading. We must think of its culture and people, its strengths and achievements.” In groups of 2-3 students, please research the history of Milwaukee through Water Street - using traditional research methods. You can use the Golda Meir, the Milwaukee Historical Society, old photos and maps, online searches and research and individual landmarks histories as secondary sources of research. (David Holmes has a series of books about neighborhoods in Milwaukee). Boswell Books. There are also several sites and books written about Milwaukee’s history through its most famous citizens.

Design Problem Creative Brief Our main target is people that don’t go downtown often, we will call them Urbanists. This group of people is not up-to-date with the city and all of its changes, and often only travel downtown for specific reasons, and then go back home. Our product will do a few things for the city. First, it will help bring attention to the layout of the city and help our target market. In doing this, it will layout the different areas of the city so people can easily navigate where they want to go, and avoid the boring and plain areas that don’t pertain to their interests. In doing to, our product will make the city more accessible to our target market, and will also provide a sense of advertising for each and every business in the city. Our project is unique because it is not specific to any one area, but will, in theory, cover the entire city. Starting with Water St., A series of screens will run up the length of Water St., Each appearing at a historical building that we want to highlight. At each specific building, the screen will include historical information on the building and immediate surrounding area. Each kiosk will also have brochures with it, which will help point out different businesses, each organized into specific themes. (Food, shopping, entertainment, Nightlife).

Design Problem

Our product will succeed because while it is informing people on Milwaukee’s history, it is simultaneously bringing people to the local businesses. With this, those same businesses will want to get behind our project and help in the process. Our project will also be successful because it puts an emphasis on the city, and not on technology, so people who want to experience the city for what it is can do so without having to fumble with an app. To begin, we will start the process and keep focused attention on the launch, and make changes as necessary to ensure the entire system works well. Once the system is perfected, we would propose the idea to the city to expand the system throughout the downtown area. Our project is set up to be in three parts. The first two parts will be set up in a kiosk consisting of an interactive screen and accompanying brochures. The kiosks will be placed outside of the historical buildings we want to highlight. The screens will then have historical information on that building, and will also include a map that identifies the different businesses. Next are the brochures, for people to take and use. Finally is a commercial which would be on tv, which will be used to promote the system being implemented and reach out to visitors while they stay in Milwaukee.

Research Reflection After all the research we did as a group on water street. We found some problems in which can be improved on water street. Some of the problems where the way water street is advertised to the general public as a street for drinking but we found there are a lot of different venues that has multiple functions other than drinking. After a meeting our group had at the library i suggested to have an interactive screen to elevate people’s experience and knowledge of water street. I had some doubt with my skills using HYPE5 to create an interactive screen but after some testing I was confidant.
