THREADS OF LIGHT 17 January —22 February 2014 The 2014 programme opens with a two-part exhibition. The upper gallery space showcases the first UK solo exhibition by Iraqi artist Hanoos Hanoos, featuring recent paintings inspired by a poem by the late great Iraqi poet al-Bayati.

AL-MUTANABBI STREET STARTS HERE 17 January —22 February 2014 The lower gallery space presents a collection of art books and broadsheets by various artists from the Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here project, which has collated hundreds of international visual and textual responses to the 2007 bombing of Al-Mutanabbi Street. Artist’s Talk Saturday 18 January, 12pm Hanoos Hanoos will be in conversation with Omar Al-Qattan about his practise. As well as presenting his other series of work, he will discuss and give particular insight to the paintings featured in the exhibition Threads of Light. FREE rsvp@mosaicrooms.org

Dirty Wars Wednesday 5 February, 7.30pm In this critically acclaimed documentary, reporter Jeremy Scahill is drawn into a dark and disquieting world of covert operations underpinning the ‘War on Terror’—unknown to the public, and carried out across the globe by men who do not exist on paper and may never be held to account. Al-Mutanabbi Street Starts Here Wednesday 22 January, 7pm Dr Alan Ingram chairs a panel discussion about this extraordinary project with two of its participating artists, Mona Krielgler and Catherine Cartwright, and guest speaker Dr Safaa Sangour Al-Salih. FREE rsvp@mosaicrooms.org New Baghdad Library Thursday 6 February, 7pm AMBS architects will be joined by cultural figures to discuss the new designs for the planned library, as well as the implications of the building in establishing a new platform for Iraq’s cultural future. This discussion is in advance of the opening of the first solo exhibition by Jamal Penjweny at Ikon, which will include photography and video works reflecting on life in Iraq today. He will reflect on the categories and modes of representation, both legal and cultural, that confine today’s Palestinians and the steps that need to be taken to move from the language of suffering and oppression to a new one of liberation and peace. MOGADISHU-LOST MODERNS 7 March—26 April 2014 A multimedia exhibition by architect Rashid Ali and photographer Andrew Cross exploring the urban transformations in Mogadishu from the early 20th Century until the present day. Mogadishu-Lost Moderns tells the story of Somalia’s journey from a traditional African nation, via colonisation and post colonialism to emergent independent state through its capital city Mogadishu.

A World Not Ours Tuesday 25 February, 7.30pm Documentary portrait of three generations of exile in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein el-Helweh, in southern Lebanon. Filmed over more than 20 years by multiple generations of the same family the film is an attempt to record what is being forgotten. A Q&A with the film’s director, Mahdi Fleifel will take place after the screening. Tickets £5 rsvp@mosaicrooms.org

Iraqi Supper Club Friday 14 February, 7-10pm This special Valentines Day Supper Club by Lamees Ibrahim will feature discussions and demonstrations. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about and sample the authentic taste of Iraq. It will be hosted at The Mosaic Rooms, in the Threads of Light exhibition.
