MESSAGE FROM CEO

Dear Colleagues,

By the time you read this, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will have come to a successful end. This grand football extravaganza celebrated universal humanity, left a great legacy, and shared many valuable lessons for all of us.

The world’s attention was captured by the genuine hospitality that Qatarincluding both its citizens and residents - showed to visitors who came here to witness the most popular sports event on the planet. This was showcased extensively by international media and individual social media accounts. The country’s leadership, under the wise guidance of His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, officials of the Supreme Committee for Legacy and Delivery, and every member of the community who worked on the various aspects of the event, deserve praise for this unparalleled accomplishment.

During the tournament, Qatargas’ FIFA Taskforce played a great role in identifying potential risks and addressing them in the most effective and efficient manner. Employees were educated properly on the various aspects of our risk mitigation plans through regular communication updates and periodic information bulletins.

Even though the working hours were reduced during the tournament time, we didn’t let that disrupt our business in any way. Striking the right balance between enjoying the great event and continuing with business as usual was a daunting task, but we did that exceptionally well. Thank you all for a job well done.

As we enter the New Year, we need to bring our focus back to the strategic plans we made for the period ahead and strive relentlessly to deliver on our commitments and promises. I wish you all a happy and fruitful year.

QATARGAS EMPLOYEE GOES ON A UNIQUE EXPEDITION TO INTRODUCE QATARI HERITAGE AND CULTURE TO THE WORLD

Mohammed Al Baker is the North Field East Head of Operation in Major Projects. He Joined Qatargas in 2010 and took up various roles in Major Projects, Operations, Shutdown, and Operation Business departments. He recently went on a unique expedition to introduce Qatari culture and heritage and promote the FIFA 2022 World Cup to a global audience. In this exclusive interview with TAWASUL, Mohammed talks about his passion and the tour.

TAWASUL: How did all this start?

Mohammed: Fishing has been my hobby since childhood. It started from a very young age when I used to go camping and fishing with my father. Since then, the sea has been my favourite spot as it offered some sort of relaxation for me from a busy life. Fishing teaches a person how to be patient and allows us to have serious reflections on the past and present life.

TAWASUL: How did you join Fath Al Khair?

Mohammed: Fath Al Khair is an activity launched by the Beaches Department of Katara Cultural Village Foundation in 2012. It is part of Katara's strategy of documenting the relationship of our forefathers with their glorious past through sea voyages that were at the heart of their lives and a source of their livelihood in the era of pearl diving.

The idea of joining this once in a lifetime experience started when one of my friends asked me to participate in this journey while night fishing and I gladly accepted the offer. Two months later, I received a call from Katara informing me of my nomination to participate in this journey. I was super excited!

This was the fifth edition of Fath Al Khair and the journey started on 4 July 2022 in Malta, where the Dhow has been kept and maintained from the previous four journeys. The plan was to set sail through various ports in Italy, France, and Spain to introduce the authentic Qatari maritime heritage and promote the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Despite the dhow’s condition and delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team rose to the challenge. Within five days, we replaced the ropes, installed the sails, fixed broken wood, placed silicon on the body, painted and polished, making the ship fully renovated.

On the sailing day, officials from Malta, local media, HE the Qatar Ambassador, and the Katara Cultural Village management wished us luck and sent their prayers for the “Dasha” (the time when sailors set sail to enter the sea on a voyage).

TAWASUL: What were the challenges you faced during the journey?

Mohammed: The journey lasted 45 days. We used the engine at night and the sail during the day to experience the hard

02 | TAWASUL - Qatargas Employee Newsletter

work of our ancestors. We faced many challenges with engine failures, major oil leak in the crankcase, and life-threatening thunderstorms which ripped off the sails and damaged the ropes. However, we were able to overcome all those obstacles by the grace of Allah, and by a strong team spirit.

TAWASUL: Explain your journey in detail and what did you do mainly to accomplish your mission?

Mohammed: We completed the journey in 45 days visiting Malta, Italy, France, and Spain. Throughout the journey, we interacted with many people and introduced them to the genuine Qatari culture and heritage and explained the different types of Arabian dhows used. We taught our audience about pearl diving, trading, and promoted the Qatar World Cup 2022 by giving away gifts such as badges, T-shirts, water bottles, footballs, and caps.

Our focus was the young children. We played different games and activities for them. The happiness in their faces lit up our faces too. It really touched our hearts and made this journey worthwhile.

Senior officials, media, and Katara management welcomed us home after a hard and challenging journey. The moment is referred to as “Al Gaffal” (the sailors’ return to their families and loved ones after a tough journey).

TAWASUL: How do you describe the entire experience in a few words?

Mohammed: It is an experience that I will never forget. It gave me a full understanding of Qatar’s great maritime heritage and history, which is an important aspect of Qatar’s identity. This trip made us realise how much our ancestors suffered and struggled to make a living from the sea.

As a team, we have achieved our goals of conveying the authentic Qatari heritage and the life of our ancestors, facilitating a cultural exchange between the Mediterranean and the Arabian Gulf countries, and promoting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION TO ENSURE PROTECTION INTERNAL ASSESSMENT 2022

SOME KEY ENSURE PROTECTION PROCESS STRENGTHS OBSERVED INCLUDED:

1. Well documented procedural controls (Manage Permit to WorkPTW)

2. High level of procedural understanding and awareness of the risks, hazards, and emergency actions (Manage Environmental Impacts - ENV)

3. RMI process has strong and effective controls and aided by the IRS (Report and Manage Incidents – RMI)

4. Good knowledge and communication of Life Saving Rules and their controls across the organisation and operating sites (Ensure Personal Safety – PSF)

5. Essential and specialised PPE is available, and users are aware of their purpose and function (Ensure Occupational Health - HLT)

The Ensure Protection Internal Assessment Team recently concluded a detailed independent evaluation of compliance with seven L3 Ensure Protection process requirements through the sampling of a cross-section of operations integrity activities. The evaluation was conducted over the course of three weeks.

The team included 23 assessors from four Qatargas Groups, as well as four shareholder representatives from Shell and ExxonMobil, and 10 observers - eight of whom were assigned to the Qatargas National Graduate Development Programme.

With a wide scope of activities to verify process implementation performance and compliance, the team conducted a total of over 80 meetings with over 200 personnel, beginning with L3 process owners, champions, and subject matter expert interviews. At this level, the ‘status’ of respective processes is evaluated for potential risks and hazards associated with operations, as well as the effectiveness of process deployment in the organisation,

encompassing communication, training, and establishment of measurement, verification, and feedback processes. The process status is subsequently rated as ‘Meets Criteria’ or ‘Needs Improvement’.

Next, the team carried out 44 onsite visits across eight Qatargas onshore and offshore facilities to test the ‘effectiveness’ of processes. This required 60 in-person interviews at field level with process users, including Heads of Operations, Supervisors, Operators, and Contractors. These reviews sampled work products and work activities to determine the extent to which Qatargas is meeting Ensure Protection requirements, performing quality work, and achieving operations integrity objectives. In alignment with this, the team carried out an intensive review of the quality and deployment of over 60 process-related policies and procedures.

At the conclusion of the reviews, the assessment observations were classified as per the Internal Audit Risk Assessment Matrix, with 34 observations (11-M & 23-L), 56 successful practices, and 24 improvement recommendations.

6. Full support by management with the strategic initiative ‘Step Change in Process Safety and Barrier Integrity Management’ (Ensure Process Safety- PRS)

7. ‘Sack Store’ storage and housekeeping (Perform Drilling & Major Rig Operations-DRO-ENV)

8. Pre-start checks of worksite such as, equipment isolation, and necessary bypasses (Perform Drilling & Major Rig OperationsDRO-PTW)

Commenting at the conclusion of the exercise, Khalifa Ahmed Al Sulaiti, Chief Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Officer, said: “I would like to recognise the assessment team, led by Soliman Khalaf, for their engagement and dedication to provide assurance on the effectiveness of our processes. This has been a very valuable opportunity to come together to appraise the Ensure Protection Processes, with the objective of improving performance, and to share lessons learned and best practices across the organisation.”

QATARGAS RELIABILITY CULTURE CAMPAIGN– A NEW BEGINNING

EVERYONE CONTRIBUTES TOWARDS RELIABILITY

WHAT IS RELIABILITY CULTURE

Before we explore the concept of Reliability Culture, it would be worthwhile to understand Reliability first. Reliability is defined as the ability of an asset to perform its required function over a specified period when used under its designed operating conditions.

Organisations that focus on reliability see these benefits-

Assets are maintainable, reliable and available when needed

Maintenance and operation costs are optimum

Surprises and unplanned outages are reduced, which greatly improves customer satisfaction

So what is Culture:

• It’s the collective behavior of people.

• It’s what the majority of people do the majority of time

It’s spoken and unspoken values, norms and system at work

A Reliability Culture enables a failure prevention mindset to exist across an organisation’s entire workforce and goes beyond merely managing the failures well.

QATARGAS RELIABILITY CULTURE CAMPAIGN

Efficient and reliable operation is one of the six pillars of Qatargas. “Enhance and promote Reliability Culture across the organisation to drive efficiency and ownership” is one of the Qatargas strategic goals. With excellent reliability, we can ensure customer satisfaction and consistently meet the world’s demand for safe, cleaner and reliable energy.

Qatargas has historically valued reliability and acknowledged its importance by incorporating stateof-the-art systems and processes since early 2000. Qatargas has established itself as a pioneer in the field of Reliability by integrating its Asset Performance Management System. The processes such as Riskbased Maintenance Strategy, Failure Analysis, Bad Actor Elimination Inspection and Surveillance programmes, Maintenance &

Operations Excellence, and Spares Management have matured in the journey which is reflected in Qatargas’ excellent Reliability performance.

To maintain and further improve our Reliability, the culture of a Reliability mindset among our people is the key.

The Reliability Culture campaign is focused on tapping this potential of Reliability mindset and making Reliability as a common language to prevent and address equipment failures.

The Reliability Culture campaign is owned by Integrity & Reliability dept. and stewarded by Reliability & Maintenance Engineering division.

CAMPAIGN FOCUS AREAS

• Spread message of Reliability as core belief

• Enhance understanding of Basic Reliability concepts

• Understanding that “Everyone contributes”

The campaign kicks off in early 2023 with lot of exciting and intriguing activities in pipeline to enhance and promote Reliability culture.

The campaign is just the beginning of many milestones in our Reliability journey which all the Qatargas people shall collectively achieve and witness.

1% RELIABILITY AT QATARGAS IS EQUIVALENT TO 12.5 CONVENTIONAL LNG CARGOES

SAFETY ISSUES AFFECTING FIRE PREVENTION

The best way to fight fires is to prevent them before they start!

Routine Fire Inspections are one of the most effective ways to prevent a fire. At Qatargas, Fire Prevention Officers conduct Fire Inspections on a regular basis throughout the year across all facilities. They check common areas including offices, stairways, utility rooms, storage rooms, and building exteriors for issues that could threaten the safety of personnel.

These inspections provide an opportunity to identify and correct unsafe conditions, but such intervention is limited. The proactive behaviour of building occupants helps to reduce risk exposure, and this article aims to help personnel quickly identify and correct potential hazards.

and properly disposed of at least once a day. The storage of cleaning liquids should be limited to a few days’ usage.

STORAGE PLACED TOO CLOSE TO FIRE SPRINKLER HEADS

Don’t place items too close to fire sprinkler heads! The international standard requires a distance of 45cm from a sprinkler head to the closest item. Items nearer than this obstruct the water discharge pattern flowing from the sprinkler head, inhibiting the effectiveness of the fire suppression system and allowing a fire to spread.

ITEMS PLACED IN CORRIDORS AND HALLWAYS AND BLOCKED EXITS

evacuation and must therefore allow for rapid movement of people.

FIRE DOORS BEING PROPPED OR WEDGED OPEN

Doors are the safety barrier to smoke, heat, and toxic gases from a fire, so never prop or wedge them open! Fire doors are fundamental to the integrity of fire barriers; any time there is an open doorway that barrier is broken.

BLOCKING FIRE PROTECTION EQUIPMENT

Never obstruct or obscure fire protection equipment from view! Fire protection systems and equipment such as fire extinguishers should be immediately accessible and available so personnel can access this essential firefighting equipment as quickly as possible in the event of an emergency. If working on smoke detectors, always remove any temporary covering that prevents unwanted activation after work is completed.

USE OF NON-STANDARD, UNTESTED ELECTRICAL EXTENSION CORDS

Most unsafe conditions related to fire prevention are easily identifiable.

Listed below are some of the safety issues that Fire Inspectors worldwide repeatedly encounter.

IMPROPER STORAGE

Keep it tidy and remove every-day combustibles around your workplace! Items must be kept away from exterior walls by an aisle, and at least 60cm away from ceilings. Where business processes create litter or combustible waste, containers should be supplied

Obstructions can be an impediment in an emergency! It is important not to place anything in an exit route or block doors. This includes equipment, cabinets, desks, tables, chairs, and general rubbish. Corridors, hallways, and stairs are the way out of a building during an emergency

Extension cords must be assessed to ensure they are safe to use! The Facilities Management Department carries out Portable Appliance Tests (PAT) regularly to maintain a safe workplace. Do not use untested extension cords from outside the workplace, daisy-chain (link together), or overload sockets.

10 TH NORTH FIELD HYDRATE FORUM

DISCUSSES BEST PRACTICES AND COLLABORATION

Qatargas has hosted the 10th North Field Hydrate Forum (HF) at Qatargas' Doha Headquarters recently. The annual event facilitates sharing of experiences, highlights, challenges, and achievements from the previous 2021/2022 hydrate season and preparation for the upcoming 2022/2023 hydrate season to each Flow Assurance Project (FAP) Operator. It provides an opportunity to ensure cross learnings among all the Operators.

Fahad Al-Khater, Qatargas Chief Offshore, Terminals and Refining Officer, opened the Hydrate Forum by sharing a personal story related to a 2007 hydrate event in Qatargas

WORKPLACE SAFETY TIPS

KEEP CORRECT POSTURE

We’ve all heard that age old saying, “lift with your legs—not your back,” but keeping correct posture refers to more than just employees who lift things regularly. If you work at a desk, you also need to make sure you have good posture to avoid back problems, neck pain, and even carpal tunnel.

BE AWARE OF NEW SAFETY PROCEDURES

When your company purchases a new machine, or even updates training, it’s important to make sure you’re aware of the new safety procedures that go along with those changes. it’s your responsibility to ensure you understand the new safety procedures and implement them properly before you use any new machines.

NEVER TAKE SHORTCUTS ON PROCEDURES

Workplace procedures exist to keep employees safe, especially those that go along with heavy machinery. It’s important to always use every tool and machine you’re working with according to instruction. Shortcuts lead to injury and aren’t worth the small amount of time they might save you. Be sure you’re always using the right tool for the job, and using it correctly

PASSION, ENDURANCE ARE KEY TO BIG GAINS – SAYS ‘IRONMAN’

Mohamed Ahmad Khalil, Head of Cost Control – Operations within Budgeting & Cost Control Department of the Finance & Planning Group, has been awarded the title of ‘Ironman’ following his successful participation at the 70.3 Half Ironman Championship which was held in the island of Mactan, Cebu, Philippines in August 2022. He completed a swim of 1.9 kilometres and cycling of 90 kilometres, in partnership with his triathlon teammate, Larry Victoriano, who completed the final stage, a run of 21.1 kilometres. The total time of 7 hours, 20 minutes, and 7 seconds was well within the 8.5 hours maximum time limit.

Ironman championships are the fiercest triathlon competition worldwide. Winners of the regional championships compete in the Ironman World Championship which has been held annually in Hawaii, US, since 1978. It is owned and organised by the World Triathlon Corporation.

Mohamed joined the journey of triathlon when he decided to compete for the first time in Egypt’s Ironman Championship in 2021. He was always a man of sports, growing up in Egypt where he frequented beaches and clubs with friends and relatives who have chosen sports as their number one entertainment and go-to activity. Originally a basketball player, Mohamed is a versatile sportsman as he has participated in football, tennis, cycling, and other sports. It’s only natural that triathlon became his number one passion.

In the Philippines Ironman championship, Mohamed teamed up with his friend and triathlon teammate, Larry, to complete the running stage of the competition due to a knee injury. “I like sports since I’m young, and I believe that sports not only keeps me fit and healthy, but it also helps me with my work and teaches me how to deal with teams. Sports, as we are well aware, is all about teamwork,” says

Mohamed. He applies this mantra in his day to day role working with his team in the Cost Control Division. He believes that a well-informed, collaborative, and trained team can create wonders especially in a premier organisation like Qatargas.

Talking about his feelings after crossing the finish line, Mohamed said, “it was never about being tired or exhausted, but it was always about a sense of pride, accomplishment, and relief. It is with passion and endurance that one can achieve maximum gains from a physically demanding activity such as a triathlon. Equally important is the determination, grit, and team spirit to pursue life’s big goals such as this one.” Indeed, Mohamed Khalil has all those attributes, which undoubtedly are key traits for an effective and efficient leader and team player at work.
