01 Hilton Hotel Hongqiao Airport 虹桥机场希尔顿酒店

HIGH-END HOTEL AT THE TERMINAL Hotel| Infrastructure Integration Design Development & Construction Drawing | Shanghai, China ECADI |Architecture Designer | 2020-2021

BRIEF In 2014, the renovation of Hongqiao Airport T1 terminal building, transportation center and municipal supporting facilities in the east area began. This series of renovations drives the urban renewal of the entire eastern area and improves the overall functions of Hongqiao Business District. The project site is adjacent to the T1 terminal building, which is an important part of the boutique terminal area. The construction of the project will comprehensively improve the service quality of the airport.

立面设计 FACADE DESIGN The hotel facade continues the streamline language of Terminal 1 architecture. The glass curtain wall system consists of visible structural horizontal louvers and concealed vertical divisions. According to the room layout, the vertical louvers also function as ventilators. At the curved corners, the window range is set by equal angular division in order to ensure a consistent rhythm on the elevation. 酒店立面造型延续T1航站楼的流线形式，材质以玻璃为主，采用横明竖隐分隔。 配合每个房间布局，竖向格栅兼具通风器功能。弧形转角处的幕墙等角度划分，保证外观的节奏统一。

型材细部 LOUVER DETAIL As the main element of the facade, the horizontal profile is dedicate and articulate, wraping around the tower and the podium. Various typologies of louvers apply according to the space of each level, differentiating between guest room, facility, and crown levels 横向格栅作为主要立面元素，断面设计精 准清晰地贯穿建筑体量。依据功能空间， 每层采用不同横断面以适应客房、设备、 顶层的外观表现。

一层平面图 GRDOUND FLOOR PLAN According to the function of space, the hotel entrance is divided into the guest entrance and the banquet entrance. The banquet hall has a double-height space, and the curtain wall runs through vertically. The pedestrian entrance lobby is organically combined with the atrium, and a set of passenger elevators serves the public area, connecting the lobby, conference and business floors, and banquet floors. 依据使用功能，酒店入口分为住客入口和宴会入口。宴会门厅挑空双层高空间，幕墙竖向贯通。 人行入口大堂与中庭有机结合， 一组客梯服务于公共活动部分，连接大堂、会议商务层、宴会层。

行政酒廊及庭院 COURTYARD PAVILION The outdoor courtyard in the center of the building contains administrative corridors and outdoor recreation functions. The square courtyard is covered with a ceiling, with an indoor lounge on the west side, independent private rooms on the north and south sides, and an open living room on the east side. A circular sculptural water feature is arranged in the center of the courtyard, and a wooden grille divides the interior space of the lounge, providing a quiet and transparent public landscape experience. 建筑中央的户外庭院包含行政走廊和室外休憩功 能。方形庭院有顶棚覆盖，西侧为室内酒廊，南北 两侧各有独立包间，东侧为开放客厅。庭院中心布 置圆形雕塑水景，木质格栅划分酒廊内部空间，提 供安静通透的公共景观体验。

BRIEF Starting with the natural context in Conghua, Guangzhou, the project takes on an ecological approach where water, landscape, architecture and urban development unite into a cohensive scheme. The combination between land and water is a strong fundament in the eco design project.

We started with the river. working with the flow of water which formulates a strong element in the design (see water flow design).

There are four essential elements to the Eco Design in context: the Landscape, the Water, the Architecture, and the people. Eco design comes from the connection and integration between all the elements in the ecosystem.

Therefore, we design a living landscape, where visitors can experience the landscape as an open air museum and interact with the environment.

LANDSCAPE: WATER NETWORK AND ISLANDS The landscape design varies among the islands, giving each of them a unique character. Using different plants, colors and atmospheres, the islands lead visitors through a sequence of landscape experience in the Eco Village.

Within the masterplan. we designed 8 projects including boutique hotels, SPA facilities, and public spaces. Blurring the inside and outside spaces, each architectural schemes proposes in-between zones that brings nature into the inhabitable space.

Old School Hotel: Landscape on the Rooftop Working with land and water is the strong fundament of our Eco Design project.

The Old School building formulates a dynamic natural system: it embraces water and landscape design with the water cascade on the roof.

The steping sequence in combination with nature provide opportunities for leisure and social experience.

SPA Complex: Collective Hot Spring Bath The design of the SPA Complex aligns with the“falling water”composition.

Intersecting indoor and outdoor rooms, the SPA Complex offers a complete experience of hot spring rituals. The wooden and hempcrete material enhances the warmth and serenity of the SPA, creating a bathing area with strong natural character.

SPA COURTYARD HOUSES Connecting a seqeunce of courtyards, the hotel rooms are covered with squre canopies seen in traditional Chinese architecture. Inhabitated by plants and natuer, the courtyards provide comfortable environment for relaxation and lodging. 03 RICHMOND POWER STATION REVITALIZATION OF INDUSTRIAL SITE Office Complex| Rennovation Concept Design | Melbourne, Australia OMA | Architecture Intern | July 2017

BRIEF Aiming to provide contemporary office space and new urban identity for the historical power plant located on the banks of the Yarra River in Richmond, Victoria, the design proposal connects a 4-storey podium and a office tower through an art alley. Inviting the public from main urban axis, the art alley is an activated exterior extention of the old power station building, which is transformed into an art gallery.

The main volume of the complex faces the Yarra River. With ground floor lifted, it opens up to the waterfront and merges the building to the streets. Inside, a work space loop flows through the main volume, providing amenity programs as well as flexible office rooms. Serving as the main circulation path, the 3-dimensional loop creates opportunities for encountor and interactions, blurring the hard boundary set by conventional office spaces.

SITE DESIGN To better connect with the city, each facade of the main building has an entrance that opens to the streets. The art alley in between facing the urban promennade draws the public towards the office podium as well as the art gallery. Public and private access is differenciated through elevator cores, while the loop - the main circulation feature, is reachable to both users.

THE WORK SPACE LOOP At the heart of the complex, the work space loop connects the offices to the ammenities by stimulating circulation and mobility of the inhabitants. Starting on the ground floor, it first appears and a grand stair, leading up to fitness, presentation, rehearsal, and broadcasting spaces along its path on the upper levels.

Working together with green atriums distributed on each floor, the form of the loop varies to create special experience such as the spiral pocket, the hanging graden, and the viewing platform. Extending into the original power plant building, it connects the office space to the art gallery with neccessary compartment.

MULTILEVEL MOSAIC OF OUTDOOR SPACES

POROUS VOLUME FROM OUTDOOR SPACES The plan is organized by a grid system where floor plates occasionally opens up to create green atriums and outdoor spaces. Integrated with the loop, these gardens provide special experiences such as a spiral pocket and a hanging garden looking to the river.

THE ART ALLEY: CONNECTING OFFICES, POWER STATION, AND THE CITY The gap between the main building and the power station is vitalized as an outdoor art alley that hosts sculptures and installations. Aligned to the linear plaza next to the site, it invites the public to visit the complex and becomes a creative space for people to interact, bringing life to the rennovated power station.

BLURRED BOUNDARY While differentiating the loop ammenity space from the office space, the space in between formulates a buffer zone that reduces the segragation of people and their activities.

ALONG THE LOOP The loop flows through the office space to make the circulation an experience of the entire building.

It leads the visitor through informal meetings, green atriums, and ammenity spaces to reach different sectors of offices.

FACADE DESIGN Facing the water, the main facade maintains the sihouette of the building with a unified materiality, and reveals the internal collection of programs by being translucent visually.

Pulled steel strings lay over all surfaces of the facade, creating a holistic yet dedicate and soft appearance for the elevation.

BRIEF

Focusing on the materialistic quality and character of Yerevan, the analysis decodes and re-contextualizes the city’s geographical and architectural composition by collecting physical materials on the site of Komitas Pantheon, a partially abandoned park.The design proposes a complex of public pools and parks along the city’s river valley. The intervention responds to the geographical and social landscape through spatial gestures, cultivating public activeness in conjunction with natural terrain.

The field study begins with a territorial investigation, mapping the valley of Hrazdan River over the geographical region of Yerevan.The mapping delineates the topographical conditions of the river in relation to adjacent towns and villages, while addressing the plateau landscape.

The sectional study reveals the geological composition and soil layers beneath the river valley.

YEREVAN URBAN ANALYSIS POLITICAL AXIS AND URBAN INSTITUTIONS

Designed and implemented as part of Yerevan’s urban master plans, the main axis crossing the city is a heritage of early utopian planning schemes.

Isolation various landmarks and intersections along the axis, the analysis reimagines the axis’ relation to the city’s public spaces and institutions.

DESIGN RESEARCH THE LANDSCAPE AND MATERIALITY OF PUBLIC SPACE

Departing from the thick layers of spatial characteristics in Yerevan, the analysis decodes and re-contextualizes the architectural specificities by extracting literal information from physical sites and translate them into representational drawings and models.

From divisions of landscape to positioning of objects, the specific conditions of Komitas Pantheon formulate its own materiality and physicality as a place.

The specific matters that compose each division of the public zone create a holistic materialistic reading of space.

The goal of the research process is to dissect the specific elements and layers of the park. Analyzing various zones and points within the area, the research reveals the internal logic of its material composition.

FROM CONTOURS TO SPACE

By projecting the contours of the city sections on to one plane, the drawings seek to create a virtual field whose characteristics and materiality can be further developed.

The following models are based on the line drawings of contours, materializing the abstract implications of curves, meshes, shades, etc. In common, they produce a materialistic translation of (the act of) contouring into landscape and architectural constructs.

COURTYARD FACADES SPATIAL SEQUENCE

BRIEF

As one of the guiding theme of the design, the definition and relation between interior and exterior prevails the buildings and courts in Oxford. Entering the colleges from streets, one passes through alternations of indoor and outdoor space. While there may be linear and direct transitions from enclosure to openness, the space within the college complex often contains exterior elements in indoor spaces and organizes various building blocks with unified indoor programs.

Positioning residence and working space for a guest in two wings of the college complex, the proposal explores the dialogue between internal and external, domestic and public, and private and public.

The draws reorganize the composition of interior and exterior elements through tilted perspective projects. The analysis is essential to understanding how elements interact and contrast to compose intricate indoor and outdoor spaces.

Located in the second courtyard of Oriel College, the proposal divides the public and private uses of the guest’s residence into a living wing on the east and an office wing on the west.

Facing each other across the courtyard, the architectural elements reflect the position and function of respective spaces.

On each level, the space and rooms are organized around the central division wall. Presented with arcade and bricks, it functions as an exterior element for the indoor programs.

The oval staircase and the elevated floor plate and steps contribute to the public and outdoor atmosphere in the space.

EAST WING RUIN MODEL

The physical model takes on a “ruin” appearance to expose the collision between indoor and outdoor elements.

The domestic wing, which hosts social space, bedroom, and study space for the guest, also includes a division wall as external element, responding to its twin.

Reception space on west wing celebrates the openness and public character of the college through arched columns made of bricks. The steps to the left slightly elevate the floor to create a separate co-working space.

The external materiality introduced by the structural walls brings outdoor elements into the indoor programs, while the arch and niches in the wall emphasize the spatial quality of a public building.

To the right, the bedroom in the east wing connects to an atrium with an oval staircase. With much softer materiality and lighting, the space is delicate and private. The visual connection to the atrium with curved stairs maintains a level of public and open atmosphere to the space.

BRIEF

Urban fabric and density analysis shows a characteristic gradual change of building height, population density, and metropolitan function.

The gradient runs from southeast of the site to northwest, conforming with the radiating influence of d owntown Chicago.

The public library performs as an interface where all the exchanges, convections and diffusions take place.

Overlapping two building volumes of distinct character and creating a core space dedicated to conferences, multi-media use and interactive events, the library facilitate the communication of different metropolitan cultures and the interaction of social values.

With such a communicative space, the library facilitates cultural INTERLOCUTION in the city of Chicago.

Double height reading space overlaps in the middle and forms a series of flexible multi-purpose rooms that promote the interaction of visitors.

At each level, the double height area is dedicated to book collection and reading, whereas the single height space accommodates events and meetings, overlooking the level below.

SPATIAL SEQUENCE

Entering the building, the visitors pass a variety of public programs: exhibitions space, library, terrace, and multi-purpose rooms.

The sequential programs address the building’s relation to the streets and the city, while maintaining a complex interior that interlocks public and private programs.

Facade and material reinforce the differentiation of space as one moves through the building; material choice of metal screening, translucent envelop and vertical wooden sheathing resonates with the history and culture of the neighborhood.
