Autumn colour AT WITLEY COURT As summer turns to autumn, Witley Court’s gardens are a fascinating place to spend the day. Once one of England’s grandest party houses, English Heritage’s Witley Court is now a romantic ruin thanks to a devastating fire in 1937.

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION We’ve all been there. You arrive at a social event and, too late... you realise that your clothes are all wrong. It’s mortifying. So here’s an easy guide to event dressing for late summer.

Check the etiquette Most events will put the dress code on the invitation.

Do follow it. Even at relatively informal events, an inappropriate outfit makes you feel uncomfortable. At worst, you may be refused entry. The Royal Enclosure at Ascot, for example, has a notoriously strict dress code. Hats are compulsory for women - but not just any old hat. It must have a solid base of 4 inches or more –

A quick word about weddings Always check how formal the wedding is going to be. A country wedding, for example, will call for a different dress code to a city wedding. Fortunately, block heels are bang on trend at the moment and flats will be everywhere this autumn, so you have plenty of choice. These days, hats are optional. But do be careful about the perils of “social kissing” in a wide brimmed hat. It can be tricky!

Remember the skin rule This one’s especially important for work parties but it applies to any event. Show off legs or décolletage - but not both, otherwise you’re in danger of losing authority.

Public Transport: The nearest railway station is at Hereford. There are Sargeants buses to Titley (Memorial near Church) from Hereford via Kington. Please check Traveline and local timetables.

Parking: You will need to find suitable parking spots in country lanes. Please do not block gateways and allow room for agricultural machinery to pass.

O/S Map: Explorer 201. Distance: 7.5 miles. Shorter 5 mile option.

Time: Allow all day and watch out for clues to the ‘railway’ past.

Special thanks to the residents of Titley who cleared stiles, railway embankments and a half-mile length of restricted by-way that was choked with bracken.

10: Just before you reach the main road, the footpath on the left cuts across the corner to exit over a stile near the Parish Church at Titley where the walk ends.

4. Don’t skimp on shoes There is no point buying flashy shoes for school, but children’s shoes are worn every day (and during kick-around playtimes in the case of active children), so it’s worth investing in something durable.

5. Label every item of school uniform Sew a nametag into your kid’s clothing and bags, and chase up any item that doesn’t make it home on the day it was taken to school – rooting through the lost property promptly should help avoid losing clothes forever. Still, reading all of these cost-cutting measures makes me wonder why we’re buying them at all. I love the idea of a uniform – fosters community spirit, efficient in the morning - but those worn by the majority of children don’t actually look good.

So what’s the answer?

This custom is now seen as an authoritarian anachronism in France, and its revival is tabled only occasionally by far-Right candidates. But still…

Comfortable. Practical. One-size-fits-all. Perhaps we should give up on the notion of pre-professional dressing and follow the French. It may not be such a bad idea.
