Another great find is the Bateman Arms at Shobdon. At the heart of this ‘blink-and-you’ll-miss-it’ north Herefordshire village, the Bateman has as much space outside as in, allowing the adults to chill while the kids have a run around in the enclosed gardens and play area.

Call it Mortimer Country, the Marches, or simply beautiful north Herefordshire, The Riverside Inn at Aymestry has one of the prettiest beer garden spots you could wish for. As its name suggests, it is right on the water of the River Lugg and the traditional benches line up on the grass along the gentle flow of this little waterway. While the timbered pub and restaurant is a destination for foodies, walkers adore this quenching stop and so will your dog with the cooling shallows low enough for a splash about.

KEEPING ACTIVE Start / Finish: This circular walk is around Caldicot just south of the confluence of the River Wye with the River Severn (at Chepstow). It starts and ends at Caldicot’s lovely modern slate cross in the centre.

Public Transport: The nearest railway station is at Caldicot. There are buses to Caldicot centre from Newport and Chepstow. Please check Traveline and timetables before you embark on your journey.

Parking: There is a car park in Caldicot and some street parking.

O/S Map: Explorer 154. | Distance: 7 miles. Shorter 5 mile ‘loop’.

Time: Allow all day and spend some time beside this huge River Estuary or visit The Tunnel Centre and Caldicot Castle en route.

Refreshments: Stock up on food in the Caldicot Centre. There are a few handy shops at Portskewett too. Maybe take a picnic to enjoy on the way or have a coffee in Caldicot on your return.

Edward Elgar - Part of Hereford History

Pearson from Shropshire won the competition with a bronze statue of Elgar leaning against his beloved Sunbeam bicycle, which he called 'Mr Phoebus'. The statue was duly erected, and now stands in the grass outside Hereford Cathedral.

Elgar died on 23rd February 1934. He is still fondly remembered in Hereford by the statues of himself and of Dan the dog, and of course by his wonderful legacy of musical works, many of which are played today at the Three Choirs Festival.
