Message From the Director
Friends and Families,
Thank you for opening our Summer edition of Leisure Magazine—Prince William County’s go-to source for all things recreation, outdoor education, and history immersion. In the words of Oprah Winfrey, “Summer has a flavor like no other; always fresh and simmered in sunshine.” This is a special time of the year when we wake early to explore nature by day and celebrate the joy of life late into the night. Between trips to places unknown or your favorite oasis, remember vacation awaits in your own backyard here in Prince William County. Our vast array of program offerings coupled with 5,000 acres of parkland, 15 historic sites, and 60 miles of trail make it easy to heed nature’s call. Our dedicated staff has been working hard to curate an exciting selection of new recreational and educational opportunities for you.
Spend the night at the 202 year old Brentsville Jail (pg. 25) on July 13th and experience a mock trial, evening tour, and ghost stories around the campfire before settling in for the night in one of the cells. Start your self-care journey at The Healing Workshop (pg. 18) on May 4th at the Chinn Aquatic and Fitness Center where instructors will demonstrate how everything is connected by breath and steps to take in healing our emotional energy with awareness. On August 17th take a flashlight hike along the Neabsco Creek Boardwalk at Campfire and Critters (pg. 26) and learn about the amazing nocturnal animals that call the wetlands home, then discuss these critters around a glowing campfire with smores. Nurture your young chef’s skills at Mam Mia Pizzeria (pg. 13) on July 16th at the Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center where each child will craft their own 8-inch pizza from start to finish and enjoy preparing their own soft drink. Take a self-guided tour of the African-American History Trail which features 15 stops that tell the stories of early African American pioneers and sites and their lasting impact on modern Prince William County (visit pwcva.gov/history for more information).
We are proud to offer programs for participants of all ages and abilities, including adaptive programs such as Adapted Aquatics, Adapted Flatwater Kayaking, Art Expressions and Adapted Dance. (pg. 11) Please contact accessibility coordinator Veronica Laughman, vlaughman@pwcgov.org to discuss your accommodation needs.
Our park system is growing and the summer is a perfect time to experience new developments such as

Forest Valley 18-hole disc golf course at Forest Greens Golf Course—the first stand-alone public disc golf course in the county and Rollins Ford Park a new 70acre regional park near lake Manassas, which features two rectangular fields, a destination playground, picnic pavilions, basketball courts, a dog park, and a comfort station surrounded by walking trails and wildflower meadows. For pickleball lovers, we opened up 13 new dedicated courts in 2023 at Ben Lomond, Brittany Park, Anne Moncure Park, and Braemar Parks.
You can also explore our vintage parks such as Anne Moncure Wall and Marumsco Acre Lake Parks which were recently rededicated after much needed improvements using federal COVID-19 relief funds.
Visit the Dale City Farmer’s Market Sundays from 8am-1pm at the corner of Minnieville Road and Gemini Way. Visit pwcparks.info/farmersmarket for more information.
When the days get hot, come cool off at one of our four community pools or two waterparks. We are still hiring lifeguards. We provide flexible hours and great pay, all while creating lifelong friendships and lasting memories. Please visit www.pwcparksjobs.com to learn more and apply.
No matter your style of adventure, a pass for one of our Aquatics and Fitness Centers will give you the fitness edge to be ready for whichever challenge you pursue! Our low membership rates are all-inclusive of land and water classes in addition to full use of gyms and pools (pwcparks.info/aquaticandfitness). Come experience a personal touch not found anywhere else.
Thank you for taking glance at Leisure Magazine. Our wonderful staff is committed to ensuring you have an exceptional experience at every turn and ensuring we achieve our vision to transform our community. Please don’t hesitate to let us know (helloparks@pwcgov.org) if we are not meeting your expectations or if you need help finding the right recreation opportunity.

Working to strengthen their bodies can increase self-esteem, stamina, abdominal strength, improve sports performance, prevent injuries and enhance good sleep. That, combined with the focused breathing techniques essential to this exercise method , can help teenagers attain a much more serene and less stressful outlook. ”In adolescence age, habits are easily formed - good and bad.
