Bailey is. 3 1/2 year old Shih-Tzu (pronounced Shee - TZOO) who’s reason for being is to keep her humans moving. She is a St. John’s certified (although retired) therapy dog who loves people of all ages and believes people of all ages should love her. Bailey loves routine and will argue when her routine is altered. She loves opening presents and will eat her “dog” food only after all other sources are not forthcoming. Watching deer, playing with the neighbour’s Great Dane, and going for long (for her) walks are some of her favourite things to do. Barbara Ann Derksen, Author of Christian Fiction and Non-Fiction

Hello March! Words from the Editor Hello Paradise Village Residents Association (PVRA) Members.

Hello Paradise Village residents, friends and neighbours.

There is only two and a half months to go until we elect a new PVRA Executive. It is time to get serious about this.

Have you all given some thought to how that’s going to look? Have any of you been considering running for any of the positions? Have any of you spoken to others who you may think would be a good representative of the PVRA Executive? I know that there has been a lot of conversation and all opinions and suggestions matter.

The PVRA Executive and Members are a very important group just as we are a very important community. These positions are work; and no doubt, this is one reason why many are apprehensive to become involved.

It takes time, effort, and dedication to perform the duties of each position.

Each position is for a 2 year term with the hopes that 1st and 2nd VicePresidents moves up the ladder replacing the current President when the terms are up. This gives continuity to the goals of the PVRA.

The primary goal of the PVRA Executive is to provide a quality of life for the residents in Paradise Village that involves friendship, camaraderie, personal support, entertainment/social events,and financial support towards health and activities. The secondary goal is to build a workable and respectful relationship with Management.

It is very easy to fall into a negative pattern and in the last two years there has been a divide amongst the residents.

Management does not treat all residents fairly and believes the PVRA to be a useless entity causing a divide among us. Residents having to hire a lawyer to achieve small growths in individual treatments and use of our common room, the Recreation Centre, seems to me should not have been deemed necessary but how else can we get our issues dealt with?

We need someone in the new executive who can see eye to eye with Management with the priority of putting the residents first. Are you that person?

We want someone else to fix what is wrong or expect someone else to pick up the ball and run

with it. The truth is that for any group, association, or community there are many who volunteer their time and effort, their talents and gifts, their love and respect so that others can have a better quality of life. Unfortunately and too often, it is always the same people.

We need new people. Unlike a trailer park, we are unique and share the same values, wants and needs.

We take care of our properties and improve as often as possible. We are people who have many talents and gifts to give to each other and it shows everyday. This is why we need to stand together and become one with new residents stepping up to take on the responsibilities of the PVRA Executive.

We need to stand together and build a unified community focusing on how changing how Management treats us, the rights we have as seniors, and bringing together all residents as one. We need to discuss what the priorities of the PVRA are.

Is it creating a good rapport with Management?

Is it full access to the Recreation Centre? Is it buying furniture for the pool area? Is it putting up baffles for sound issues?

Beautifying the Recre-

ation Centre? Storage space? Buying new exercise equipment? Holding more activities? Raising money for local charities? I think it is all of the above and then some.

Tact is what is lacking between residents and management these days.

Taken from Day by Day by Chuck Swindoll: “Wisely labeled “the saving virtue,” tact graces life like fragrance graces a rose. One whiff erases any memory of the thorns. It’s remarkable how peaceful and pleasant tact can make us. Its major goal is avoiding unnecessary offense, and that alone ought to make us crave it. Its basic function is a keen sense of what to say or do in order to maintain the truth and good relationships, and that alone ought to make us cultivate it. Tact is incessantly appropriate, invariably attractive, incurably appealing, but rare oh, is it rare! Remember the teacher who lacked tact? Each morning you wondered if that was the day you’d be singled out and embarrassed by some public put-down. Remember the boss who lacked tact? You never knew if he ever understood you or considered you to be a valuable person. And who

Continued... could forget that tactless physician? You weren’t a human being; you were Case Number thirty-six.”

Let’s observe TACT when conversing with each other and not boasting about who can do better or rudely commenting on how bad something was done. Let’s work together towards a common goal of sharing with each other in a respectful way that builds community.

My experience with the residents (members or not) of Paradise Village

has been a positive one.

We have received cookies & apple crisp, words of encouragement and support, help with snow removal, coupons for free car washes, a ride when you lock your keys in the garage and need to pick up a set from your daughter, gifts of wine, help with the newsletter, an ear to bend when concerned about something, and the knowledge, that we for the most part, are good people willing to look out for one another even when things get

hard or difficult. I hope that they know they can count on me too!

I wish to end my editorial words with a huge thank you to the many people I have personally worked with in the PVRA and the Executive. These folks have put in many hours and have always put Paradise Village residents first. Even when times got difficult they put on a friendly face and kept on going even continuing with the positions held just to keep the Executive and the PVRA

running. I have gained some really good friends and will always be there for any of them. I am very willing to support anyone who wants to run for one of the Executive positions as long as the residents come first. Let’s grow together and create a community to be proud of encouraging anyone to come live here because it is the best place on earth.

Valentine’s Dance February 2019

The Valentine’s Dance was a great time for those who attended. Just going to see the way the Social Committee decorates is worth the effort in itself.

Many if not most danced the night away and enjoyed a good lunch provided by Linda and her team. A funny thing occurred towards the end of the evening when one member was leaving to go home and found the local RCMP from Steinbach sitting in the parking lot. A noise complaint had been called in.

Fortunately for us there was no noise to be heard of in the words of the RCMP officers. Good news!

A Board Games Night, last minute organized, was a great time. Around 18 people arrived with various games from Monopoly to Balderdash to Dominoes to Scrabble game that uses numbers, etc. Many laughs and strategies were made.

The evening ended with a frustrating game of Shuffleboard (by the Pool Table). One terrific and memorable shot was made by a member and will not soon be forgotten or probably ever repeated. Good thing it was witnessed. LOL. WE should get together more often for these games nights. The next Games night may be on

March 30th beginning at 7:00 pm. Look for postings on Facebook.

Linda will be stepping down as the Social Committee Chair in May and though times were tough and Management was not very accommodating she soldiered on proving that her dedication was genuine, caring and loyal. Thank you Linda and Brian for all that you have contributed to the

PVRA, Paradise Village and its Residents. We are blessed to have you living here.

By the way, Linda’s Key Card has become broken (no wonder with all the use it got) and the office wants to charge her $50 to replace it.

I think that we should fight against this charge.

A cost can be warranted but not $50 maybe $10 is a much more appropriate charge don’t you think?

The Funny Bone I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his DDS diploma on the wall, which bore his full name suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 40-odd years ago. Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on, way back then?

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate.

After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan park high school. “Yes. Yes, I did ...

I’m a mustang,” he gleamed with pride. “When did you graduate?” I asked. He answered, “In 1975. Why do you ask?” “You were in my class!” I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely.

Then, that ugly, old, bald, wrinkled faced, fat-assed, gray-haired, decrepit, son-ofa-bitch asked me, “What did you teach???”

Oatmeal Jam Sandwich Cookies ¾ Cup 1 Cup ½ Cup 1 2 tbsp.

2 tsp.

2/3 Cup ¾ tsp. ½ tsp.

3 Cups 1-1/2 cups

Butter, Softened Lightly Packed Brown Sugar Granulated Sugar Egg Water Vanilla Flour, All Purpose or Whole Wheat Flour Baking Soda Cinnamon Old Fashioned Oats Jam of any flavour

Preparation: 25 minutes Baking time: 13 minutes Makes: About 32 cookies Freezing: Excellent filled or unfilled

CREAM butter, sugar, egg, water, and vanilla together on medium speed of electric mixer until light and fluffy.

COMBINE flour, baking soda, and cinnamon. ADD to creamed mixture, beating on low speed until blended.

Stir in oats. DROP dough by small spoonful onto greased baking sheets. BAKE at 350 degrees (180C) for 10-13 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool completely. SPREAD jam on flat side of half the cookies. Put another cookie on top to form a sandwich.

HELPFUL HINT: Filled cookies become soft and chewy with standing.

Laugh Du Jour A man is dining in a fancy restaurant and there is a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He has been checking her out since he sat down, but lacks the nerve to talk with her. Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket towards the man. He reflexively reaches out, grabs it out of the air, and hands it back.

“Oh my, I am so sorry, “ the woman says as she pops her eye back in place. “Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you, “ she says.

They enjoy a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they go to the theater followed by drinks. They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams and he shares his. She listens.

After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a wonderful, wonderful time.

The next morning, she cooks a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy is amazed! Everything had been SO incredible!! “You know, “ he said, “you are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to every guy you meet? “ “No,” she replies “You just happened to catch my eye.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool… After catching his breath, he ordered a banana split.

The waitress asked kindly, ‘Crushed nuts?’

‘No,’ he replied, ‘Arthritis.’
