Peninsula Hosts Annual Coffee House Show Time

• Peninsula High School held its annual Coffee House show.

By Chiara Grimes House Tuesday, Dec. 12. This tradition has gone on for years and consists of a plethora of the student body performing in the amphitheatre for a night of holiday cheer, music and delectable treats.

This year 24 performances were integrated into this archaic style gathering.

Not only were the students’ talented voices demonstrated but also their instrumental skills.

The vibe of this event is a thing within itself. Peninsula does not fully embrace the holiday season until Coffee House.

Cozy blankets, hot cocoa, friendly conversations, starry skies and breathtaking tunes come together at this event. ASB, which also hosts the event, holds auditions for students wishing to perform.

For the performers who were rookies of the event, they described it with excitement and nervousness.

“I was really scared because I have never just sung on a stage with people like that before but, in the end, it was worth it,” said Charlize Boushehri, a Peninsula High junior.

Many of the first-timers said their fear of performing in front of a large crowd was trumped by the strong support of the audience.

Maxine Bennett, another performer, added, “It was really nerve-wracking thinking about performing in front of all my friends and classmates, but once I got up there it was a lot easier for I was greeted with tons of smiling and cheering faces.”

The event was quite a success for Peninsula students who did a great job bringing together the high school and the community in a much-celebrated form of art: music.

PEN Host Willenberg Students Nothing seems more like Christmas then welcoming Willenberg students onto the Peninsula High School campus. For nearly 50 years, Peninsula has joined with the Willenberg School for Special Education students to ring-in the holidays.

On Dec. 6, Willenberg students were paired with Peninsula’s volunteer students and participated in various activities throughout the day. At lunchtime, the Willenberg students entertained Peninsula with a group

performance.

On Dec. 13, various Peninsula groups, included leadership classes, performing groups and the school band, went to Willenberg to perform for the Willenberg students. The event even included a special visit from Santa. The Willenberg tradition continues to be a thriving event during the holiday season and continues to integrate the two groups.

PEN Wrestling Grapples With New Season, Athletes Wrestling

• The Peninsula High wrestling program looking to build on past success.

By Sarah Liu The wrestling season at Peninsula High School is underway, and the Panthers are prepared to put in the effort to remain on top.

The season kicked off with the Orange Lutheran Tournament at Orange Lutheran High School on Dec. 6. The team prevailed in its matches, with Diego Sheng, Zach Denney and Steven Erickson taking first places. Daniel Ahn won second place, and Isaac Aguirre got third place.

The Panthers later competed in the Six-Way Tournament on its own court, where the team went 1-2 in matches.

Most recently, at the Irvine Tournament, Peninsula’s Sheng came in sec-

ond place; Ahn won third place, and Aguirre and Muhannad Hassan came in fifth place.

The team has been committed to preparing for success, and have stepped up their workouts to reflect their competitiveness.

“Now that the season is [upon] us, we have been wrestling every day and have been increasing the intensity and seriousness of our workouts,” Jessica Ho said. “We’ve also just been working on technique and fundamentals as well.”

The team is aiming high and hoping to win a league championship and compete in CIF. Even though the team must adapt to the loss of several seniors, they feel like they have great team chemistry.

“We are a pretty small team, but we really stand out because we do some pretty gnarly damage for how many people we have,” Ahn said.

Heritage Students Come Through . . .

Students at Peninsula Heritage School donate new toys to the “Spark of Love” Toy Drive for underserved children in Los Angeles County. Firefighters from L.A. County Fire Department Station 6, Lomita, were on campus to collect the toys on the 25th Anniversary of this annual firefighters project, of which Peninsula Heritage students have been participating each year.

Peninsula Basketball Begins Season Basketball • Palos Verdes Peninsula High basketball is back and ready to follow up their CIF run from last season.

The Panthers made a deep run in the playoffs after finishing the Bay League with a remarkable 7-3 record.

Head coach Ryan Quinlan is determined to get his young team ready for league play later this season. Peninsula graduated 10 seniors last year, leaving younger players to take on bigger roles this season.

The Panthers may be young, but have talented upperclassmen on the court, such as junior point guard Won’ya Singleton and senior forward George Babek.

Babek is one of only three seniors on the roster and has taken on a leadership role this season. He knows practice is the key to winning games. ‘’In practice, when we are not playing well, I always try to motivate all of my teammates to go harder.”

Peninsula has began the season

2-4 in non-conference play, but is coming off a big home win over Price High school in front of a loud Panther crowd.

The Peninsula student body, also known as ‘’The Zoo’’, is always sure to provide a boost for the home team.

Said sharpshooter John Skoblar, ‘’It was really cool to play in front of the Zoo, and I feel like it brought energy to the team to go out and get the win.’’

One of the stars of the game was sophomore forward J.D. Plough.

Plough had his way with Price, dropping 28 points. This was Plough’s first varsity game, and he said the biggest differences between JV and Varsity basketball was ‘’definitely the size and talent of the players and the game is a lot faster.’’

The Panthers face a tough Bay league schedule this year that begins with Mira Costa on Jan. 9.

The Panthers have two big matchups against crosstown rival Palos Verdes on Jan. 23 and Feb. 8 that may be must wins for a chance at the CIF playoffs.

The Panthers may be young and inexperienced, but they are loaded with talent and are taking on this new season with a fearless attitude.

Panthers Begin New Water Polo Season Water Polo

• The Peninsula High girls’ water polo team is ready for a new season.

Lady Panthers Begin New Season . . . The Peninsula High girls’ varsity water polo team is looking forward to having another great season.

The Panthers played in the El Dorado Tournament on the weekend of Dec. 2, competing against 10 other teams.

The Panthers won three games and lost two, which gave them a third place finish in the tournament. The girls agreed that the tournament was a fun way to start the season.

The team also competed in a scrimmage against Long Beach Poly recently. Said senior Lucie Abele, “We didn’t keep score during the scrimmage, but I am going to go with - we won!”

The first official game was on Thursday, Dec. 14 at El Segundo.

The Peninsula team is relatively young, with only two seniors and two juniors on the team, but the players are excited for the season and are ready to play.

“We are looking forward to a good season,” Abele said, “We have a lot of young players on our team this year but everyone is very enthusiastic and ready to work hard in order to perform well and win a lot of games.”

Sea Kings Set For A Great Season

Basketball

• Senior players lead the Palos Verdes High girls’ varsity basketball team this season.

By Jenna McFarland The girls’ basketball program at Palos Verdes High School has always been solid, but it looks like this season is going to be one for the books.

The Sea Kings have come out strong in their preseason and, so far, have a track record of 6-1. Most notably, they played in the Corona Del Mar Tournament and came out champions.

Additionally, they beat El Segundo in their winning streak.

When comparing this season to other years, senior captain Claire Malone said, “In past seasons we have always done all right, but this year we are doing really well and off to a much stronger start.”

With this newfound success, the basketball team has higher goals than ever before and the potential to achieve them.

From beating Mira Costa, Peninsula and Redondo and making it to CIF, this season is full of hopes, dreams and predictions that are bound to bring about new experiences and triumphs for the Sea Kings.

Ariana Sunjara, another senior captain, said, “We are expected to be much better than last year, it even looks like we have a good chance at

Holiday Boutique Offers Shopping Surprises

• Peninsula High’s annual Holiday Boutique offers a great shopping experience with support for Peninsula High athletics.

By Nina Li The holiday season brings cheer, joy and the frantic rush of shopping for presents.

Peninsula High School’s Athletic Booster Club (ABC) helps people get their holiday shopping done in a day.

The annual Holiday Boutique features many small stores such as Antica Olive Oils, Gus Vintage, Sweet Sugar Bath, Classy Chargers, Life and Lemonade and more.

Set up in the Peninsula gym, the Boutique was held on Dec. 8 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Many students trickled in and out as the day went on to get hot chocolate or buy presents for their friends and family.

The ABC is an organization that helps raise funds for anything that the athletic program needs and that the school does not have money for.

The Booster Club has annual fixed costs that it pays for every year, averaging about $100,000. Some of the big items the Club pays for includes maintenance of the fields, resurfacing of the tennis courts, the new track and pool, and the scoreboards for many sports.

The Holiday Boutique is one of the several events the ABC puts on.

“The ABC raises about $250,000 a year through membership, the Holiday Boutique and the big Black and Gold event during March,” said co-president of the Athletic Booster Club Julia Parton Rosas.

“I have been on the board for six years and I know the ABC has been hosting the Holiday Boutique for the entire time I have been there, which is wonderful,” she said.

All of the vendors at the boutique are contacted by Drina Semenjuk who goes out and gets contracts with them.

One of the stores personally connected to Peninsula is Gus Vintage, which is run by head cheer coach Kim Stoneman.

“The holiday boutique is a great way to get everyone in the holiday spirit,” said Stoneman. “It sells goods and invites local makers and sellers, which is vital in any community to support local business and shop small. It is so encouraging what people do that keeps our community unique and strong. It lets everyone know that you can start your own business and depend on the

local love of your community.”

The boutique sells a variety of appliances, which targets a wide range of customers. There was green tea, necklaces, phone chargers, purses and more. There is something for everyone and no one could leave without buying a present.

“I loved starting the month with a great holiday boutique,” said Ari Cho. “It brought great holiday vibes to our school and the stores that were selling had festive and unique items. I really think that the boutique is a wonderful event where the community comes together to gradually start celebrating the holidays!”

The Boutique is a way for businesses to convene and display their products at a place where there are many people eager to purchase a gift for their loved ones especially during this time of year.

“We are thankful for those who participate and those who shop for the Athletic Booster Club with all their support for our cheer program and all the other sports programs as well,” Stoneman said.

Both Malone and Sunjara attribute much of their success to the incredible chemistry that the team shares.

Malone describes it like this: “Each of my teammates is a close friend of mine, which makes playing together so much better, because we know, love and trust each other, which is essential to team chemistry on the court.”

She went on to say, “Our coach doesn’t even have to make us spend quality time together doing team bonding because he knows that we do that already on our own, and that we love to hang out with each other outside of basketball.”

Sunjara reiterated this message when she described her teammates, making sure to mention that she sees “every player as one of my closest friends.”

PV girl’s basketball is off to a strong start, and seems to be getting better due to the hard work, talent, and the unmatched chemistry of the players.

Soccer Stays Hot To The Very End AYSO • The largest youth league on the Peninsula finished its 2017 fall soccer season with championship matches at Ladera Linda Park last week.

Blades Of Grass and the Pink Unicorns won the coveted 14U Division championship matches and are officially King and Queen of the Hill champions.

Other winners included the boys’ 9U Red Bulls, girls’ 9U Teal Tornados, boys’ 12U Real Madrid, girls’ 10U Shooting Stars and girls’ 11U Pop Tarts.
