Local Scouts Have The Best Summer Vacation

Troop 276, also known as the “Mountain Men”, trekked through the Sierra Nevada Mountains on a nine-day backpacking trip, July 31 to August 8.

The annual trip was a chance for the Scouts to unplug, enjoy nature and learn valuable skills while surrounded with friends.

There were 13 Scouts on in the trip, ages 13 to17, and each one of them was successful in reaching the 14,505 foot summit of Mt. Whitney.

This was no small feat, and their journey on that particular day began at 3 a.m. and lasted until about 4 p.m.

During this time, they traveled 8.75 miles both up and down the Going Up . . . Members of Scout Troop mountain. Along with the 13 Scouts, 276 spent the summer hiking to the eight adults made it to the top along- summit of Mt. Whitney - 14,505 feet side them, one being the troop’s above RAT beach.

Peninsula Not Big Enough For Local Scouts . . . Continued from Page 2 Scoutmaster, Dan Kerker.

Though there were adults there, the Scouts were incredibly independent, taking charge and mainly interacting with the adults to figure out times to begin their hikes each day.

Other than timing that, the boys were on their own, their campsites were separate and their success depended on their skills alone. Kerker hopes the boys gained confidence from this trip, as the excursion was more challenging than the shorter backpacking trips taken by the troop.

“We did some hard things on this trip and they did them very well,” Kerker said. “A couple of adults struggled, but the kids were able to see them persevere as well. [I hope a big takeaway from the experience was] realizing the skills they learned could be put to work in a challenging environment to [help them] prosper.”

As the trip was nine days in total, there was much more land to cover other than the miles on the day they peaked Mt. Whitney.

During the first few days, the boys split up into two groups, divided largely based on experience. Group A, which consisted of more experienced, and, by default, older hikers, traveled off-trail, which took them cross-country over the boulder fields of the Miter Basin and Crabtree Pass and along many unnamed cerulean lakes.

They hiked on what is called a “used trail”, the name due to the fact that it is used by rangers and other backpackers but is not well-traveled. Because of this, they had to find their way through the passes on a trail that was not fully marked.

One of the Scouts, 17-year-old Mark Landisman, was part of this group, and he enjoyed going on the path less-traveled.

Backpacking Experience Will Not Be Forgotten . . . Continued from Previous Page “On days three and four, we were backpacking off-trail, so we had a destination but no official trail,” Landisman said. “We had to use our knowledge of what path would be the best and easiest path to follow, hoping we chose [correctly]. We ended up bouldering and having to backtrack a few times, but it was a ton of fun.”

The other group was Group B, and they took the more well-traveled trail, often on parts of the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail.

This was challenging in its own right, with crossings at New Army Pass, 12,350 feet high, and up across the switchbacks of Forgotten Canyon.

One Scout, Jacob Hevener, was part of this group, and he found aspects of this route to be especially difficult.

“The altitude was very challenging, and the dry and hot climate added to the challenge,” Hevener said. “The trails were very rocky, gravelly and often sandy, which is not the best hiking soil.”

Still, the trip was incredibly rewarding for the Scouts, as reaching the top of a 14,505 foot summit is quite the accomplishment.

This trip was especially special for Hevener, as it was his first Long Term

trip with the troop. Troop 276 goes on many backpacking excursions throughout the year, a typical year consisting of 10 or 11 shorter trips, but the Long Term trip is an annual event, with peaking Mt. Whitney something that is only done approximately every four to five years.

That being said, this trip is a very special and unique experience for all involved. Hevener expressed his amazement and sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit.

“It was a spiritual experience in a way because I was rising up all the way to the top,” Hevener said. “Once I reached the top, I got to pat myself on the back knowing I did something I would remember for years.”

Following this strenuous day of hiking, the troop took the next day to rest and celebrate before embarking on the three-day journey back as a single group.

By the time they concluded the trip, they had traveled more than 65 miles on foot, with all the food and supplies in their packs. These packs were heavy, each being around 40 pounds. In addition, the boys were placed in groups of three to five, each in charge of carrying a bear canister to protect their food from bears and other animals. Their

Pig Movie As Good As Bacon

Movie Review

• New Nicolas Cage movie about a Portland chef and his pig is worth seeing.

By Joaquin Lugo “Pig” is a 2021 movie drama that follows Rob, played by Nicolas Cage, a famous chef in Portland, Ore. who has been off the scene for 15 years.

Rob has been living a peaceful life in the wilderness, just him and his pig.

One night a group of people break into his cabin to steal his pig with the idea that the pig is special and can find them truffles.

With the help of his friend Amir, played by Alex Wolff, who he trades his truffles with, they go in search of Rob’s pig. Cage’s performance as Rob was breathtaking, to say the least. With the

character going through mental and physical pain throughout the movie, the actor did an excellent job expressing his emotions.

During the movie, Rob’s goal never changes as all he wants is his pig back.

Even coming face-to-face with the culprits that stole his pig, he doesn’t get violent and only asks where his pig is.

Pig is a movie that you never knew you had to see.

The Recall Election Is Only A Few Weeks Away - If You Didn’t Know Aware Of Things

• Upcoming recall election something to think about now and for the future of California.

By Timothy Niemann California, typically a heavily Democratic state, has turned into a battleground state as it prepares for a rare gubernatorial recall election. For just the second time in state history, the governor, Democrat Gavin Newsom, will face a recall, which will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 14.

A recall election is when a governor or other elected official has to face an election during his or her term. Gov. Newsom’s term began in January 2019, meaning that his four-year term runs until January 2023. However, by gathering 1,719,000 signatures from California voters, recall organizers forced the September election.

The recall process is a complicated

process in the state of California. Just 19 states allow their citizens to recall, or remove, elected state officials mid-term.

California’s recall ballot looks different than many states. Instead of the incumbent governor going head-to-head with the other candidates (like he would in a regular election year), voters are simply asked whether or not they wish to remove the governor. If more than 50 percent vote yes, for his removal, Gov. Newsom will lose his job. Then, at the bottom of the ballot, voters are asked which candidate they wish would replace Gov. Newsom if he is removed from office. All voters can vote on this section of the ballot, even if they do not wish to recall the governor.

Because of the unorthodox election style, 46 candidates appear on the bottom half of the ballot this September.

However, a candidate does not need 50 percent of the votes to win the governorship.

If Gov. Newsom is removed, his re-

placement will likely receive only about 20 percent of the votes and serve the rest of his term, meaning he would face reelection in November 2022.

Every Californian has been sent a vote by mail ballot for this election. Voters can also choose to vote at a polling site on or before Sept. 14. Los Angeles County polling places can be found at the county’s website, lavote.net.

Polls show that the September election will likely be very close. As of August 25, the Real Clear Politics average of polls shows Gov. Newsom being recalled by 0.5 percent, obviously very close and well within the margin of error. If the governor is recalled, Republican talk show host Larry Elder leads the Real Clear Politics average to replace Newsom by 10.8 percent.

On Sept. 14, California will get its first competitive statewide election in many years as Gov. Newsom fights to prevent the deep blue state of California from flipping red in 2021.

We’re Back And So Is The Fall Action Publisher’s Note (crazy talk)

• The old Panorama cameraman is fully vaccinated and masked up for the fall sports season.

Summer on the Peninsula was back to normal with baseball taking over most of the action. PV Little League had two AllStar teams in the District 36 finals facing two other All-Star teams from the Peninsula - Lunada Bay and Rolling Hills.

Not matter how it turned out, the Hill was going to have two District 36 All-Star

banners flying this season.

It has not always been the case, but baseball and soccer are now tied for who rules the Hill for youth sports.

The traditional opening day of the fall sports season begins today with AYSO Picture Day at the Peninsula High baseball field.

Youth football and soccer will begin their fall seasons after Labor Day. High school sports are in full fall swing, with football, cross country leading the way.

With Labor Day sort of pushing the start of the youth season back a week, we

decided to taking a little longer between issues. The next edition of Panorama will be out Sept. 25, full of local sports and events.

As is tradition at Panorama, after our short summer break, we are beginning our fall publishing schedule totally unprepared and out of sorts. But we’ll get it together. We wanted to get this “summer edition” published and out the door so we can get on with fall sports and hopefully the return of community events on the Peninsula.

We’re hoping the Rolling Hills Estates

City Celebration is back in September along with all the horse shows. We need to have everyone back doing their thing, keeping safe and staying healthy.

And the Panorama Podcast is back in action with another set of talkers. Latest edition online now is about the expectations of going back on campus. We have another The Second Cut” golf podcast we’re recording this weekend.

So keep your eyes and ears on Panorama, we’re back and hopefully you are too.

Local Scouts Reach Summit With Friends

packs contained the necessities, which included items like sleeping bags and tarps.

The troop did not pitch tents to sleep in, only putting up tarps for cover in case of rain. On this trip in particular, there was one night of rain, in which the boys were prepared to create cover with the tarps.

Otherwise, they were able to simply put out their sleeping bags and sleep under the stars, becoming even more in touch with the nature around them.

“Being out in nature and enjoying all the beauty around them without devices is such a valuable experience,” Baldomero Fernandez, another adult that accompanied the Scouts on the trip, said. “They were able to have

good fun without having to depend on anything other than their wits and their friends,” and, Fernandez said, they took away from the experience how to watch out for each other.

The boys in the troop agree with Fernandez’s sentiments, grateful for the opportunity to form bonds with each other and appreciate nature in the most raw and unfiltered way.

Both the skills and memories gained from this experience are incredibly valuable, creating an incredibly fulfilling experience for everyone involved.

“I loved getting to spend time with my friends on this trip,” Landisman said. I built such amazing connections through scouting. “Being able to [reach the top] and share the experience with friends was just awesome,” he said

National Charity League Honors Best Ticktockers

• National Charity League, Inc., Palos Verdes Chapter, honored the Ticktocker Class of 2021 at its annual Senior Recognition at Terranea Resort.

Each year this event recognizes the cumulative efforts and accomplishments of graduating Ticktockers as Chapter and community leaders. This year’s event was even more meaningful after enduring the pandemic, finding extraordinary ways to safely serve the community and then finally being able to come together and celebrate.

This year’s theme, Attraversiamo, an Italian word loosely translates to “let’s crossover,” representing the bond these young women have created over the past six years and the transition they

Graduating Ticktockers With Their Fathers . . .

are about to make together. A new world and new adventures await them as they graduate high school and move into the next chapter of life.

The theme was reflected in every detail of the evening, reminiscent of an Italian vineyard garden overlooking the sea. Sage green, sheer white and golds were featured, along with accents of lemons and natural elements. Wine barrels, bottles and corks all played into the decor along with willow arches, lanterns and hanging glass terrariums.

The entire event space was lit with candles and twinkling fairy lights.

The girls made their entrance to “The Prayer,’” by Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion, a duet in both Italian and English, again, tying into the European theme.

“Each Ticktocker has spent considerable time volunteering in our community - contributing to thousands of philanthropy hours over the past six years,” notes 2021 NCL President Sara Robinson.

“They have developed leadership skills that will help them as they move forward in life, and they have expanded their world views through participation in many cultural outings. All of these experiences have contributed to them blossoming into the exceptional individuals they are today.”

Cindy & Peyton Eberhard were awarded the Mother/Daughter Award for completing 279 hours of philanthropy service together while in PVNCL. They enjoyed volunteering together at the Harbor Animal Shelter and were honored to help place these animals with new loving families.

Kelsey Hatamiya was awarded the Senior Service Award for 689.5 philanthropy service hours during her 6 years in PVNCL. She spent much of her time with the seniors at The Belmont Assisted Living Community, playing count-

less games of Bingo, making jewelry and being a friendly face and companion to the residents.

As part of a time-honored NCL tradition, graduating Ticktockers wore white dresses as a symbol of new beginnings and fresh opportunities. Each carried a nosegay as a symbol of natural beauty and in recognition of the beauty, heart, mind and soul the young ladies possess. They were escorted by their families, representing a lifetime of

Palos Verdes Chapter members enthusiastically offer their time and compassion throughout the community.

The Chapter currently works with 32 local and national philanthropy partners serving families, children and youth, health, environmental, community, and education.

Ticktockers, ages 12-18, appreciate the opportunity to serve their community through hands-on work with organizations such as Peace4Kids, Friendship Foundation, Toberman Neighborhood Center, Boys and Girls Club of the Los Angeles Harbor, Peninsula Education Foundation, Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, Heal the Bay, Valmonte Early Learning Academy, and more.

While the pandemic made it challenging to safely serve the community, this past year the Chapter provided an astonishing 15,797 volunteer hours.
