Bayonne teachers attend reading summit
Marge Boyer and Susan Rusnak, who conduct Parent University workshops for families throughout the school year, recently attended the Scholastic Reading Summit for Educational Leaders in Park Ridge, N.J., where Henry Winkler (“The Fonz” from “Happy Days”) was one of the guest speakers. Winkler is not only an accomplished actor and producer, but also a “New York Times” bestselling author. During the summit he spoke of his inability to excel in school, his constant struggle to be better and to be accepted, and his successes. Mrs. Boyer, academic support coach for literacy, and Mrs. Rusnak, technology teacher, participated in breakout sessions that provided strategies for empowering today’s students. Throughout the summit, 21st century skills were illustrated and discussed along with the Power of Book Talks, the use of series books to develop literacy, the importance of family engagement, and student-led book clubs. It was a day of professional development that will benefit Bayonne’s children. Along with paperback novels, the summit provided each participant with a USB drive to install Storia, an E-reading application, which includes five free books. The application is only available for PC computers and iPads, but there are plans for it to be accessible on Macs soon, according to a Scholastic representative. St. Peter’s students achieve Dean’s List honors Several students from Bayonne achieved Dean’s List honors at Saint Peter’s College for the spring 2012 semester. Diana Malinowski was also awarded the Wassman Medal at the 2012 commencement ceremony. This award is granted to the graduate with the highest average in the biology program. HONOR – Bayonne High School student Jan-Alfred Aquino was recently granted the AP Scholar with Honor Award. This award is given to students who received an average of 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams.
SCHOLARS – Bayonne High School student Matthew Chiaravalloti was recently awarded the distinction of AP Scholar. This award is granted to students who received a grade of 3 or higher on at least three AP exams.
SCHOLAR – Bayonne High School student David Elias was recently recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction. This award is granted to students who received an average of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of those exams.
SCHOLASTIC – Henry E. Harris School’s grade seven students, coached by Ms. Nardone, Mr. McCauley, and Ms. Raslowski, competed in the 2011-2012 Marist Scholastic Olympics.
